I may be 100% wrong, but I think that he is showing that even though the comments and all the negativity although they may effect him he still uses it to make the beat of the song. He uses his art to deal with the negativity. Music from pain and chaos, art from suffering, and depression.
I think you’re right! He uses the negativity and anxiety and puts it into his music and it helps him feel in control (the way he controls the voices with his hands.) Genius.
This was my interpretation as well. Maybe not just the beat specifically, but the fact that he took a lot from the negativity and trauma in his life and built his creativity on top of it. I think this song is a look into his process
I love that he DID write a "silly song about Facebook" WHILST challenging the norm. Also he said that he was surprised to see how the audience that came up to him to tell him they most related to his work were teenage girls, even more than his peers. He's also talked about how cringey it is to pander to teens in a patronising way. Also is it just me who gets chills when the "we think we know you" line first happens?
Teens are smart, they dont need to be pandered to. Looking back at my 16 year old self, I understood the world almost just as well as i do now at 21. (Im still young and have a lot to learn, but lets not underestimate the younger ones.)
My interpretation of this show is that bo is being offended by these 3 people and then he turns all his problems into music. That's exactly what he did on his last shows and on the inside. In "we think we know you" he also increases the music until he can't hear the insults.
It's so meta that this piece IS him working the critics into his work, AND showing the process and journey of getting there. That's what he did with inside too in a way.
At the end, when it said Bo Burnham again, he was pointing at the audience - telling them they are changing him too. He was drowning out the voices and turning them into his creativity and comedy Great video
Bro. You get it. I feel very good in saying you're the best reactor I've ever seen. You''re very thoughtful and analytical, so many kudos to you. Your Bo reactions are the best, keep up the good work!
Side note is that he went to an all boys catholic high school (I lived a town over), so no girl said "hey we knew each other freshman year" But I assume he needed a different pitched voice for the song, so that's why it's a feminine voice.
He was a non-masculine theatre kid that went to a catholic high school, in Boston. He also went from like 5 ‘6” to 6’4” in like 1 year. So he was definitely picked on, unfortunately.
You should totally react to the whole of inside or even just 'how the world works' 'comedy' and 'funny feeling.' Excited to see you dive down this rabbit hole !!
It would’ve been so cool to see this live. Not knowing the title of the song probably makes such a difference. When halfway the “we think we know you” hits.
It really does. I didn’t see this show live, but I watched right after it came out on Netflix, I think. I knew Bo Burnham but I didn’t know any of the songs from this special. The goosebumps I got, it’s a feeling I won’t ever forget. And I definitely teared up at the very end, it hit very hard
I love watching your reactions, man. You're really good at analyzing for deeper meaning and catching symbolism and explaining your interpretations of things. Keep going, you're doing a great job!
I reckon you nailed this one dude! Regarding Tim Minchin: Bo is a lot more introspective and clever with things like his staging, symbolism and production. Tim just uses music (he’s an amazing pianist) and comedy to say things like they are. He deals with stuff like religion, child abuse in the Catholic Church, evolution, race, love, etc, but it’s a lot more silly and light-hearted (mostly) than Bo’s inner-turmoil. Here are some recommendations (not in any order): - Prejudice - Pope Song (a lot of f-bombs) [best with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra] - Confessions - Darkside - Storm (9-minute beat poem)
13:16 ... when he's adjusting the levels his hands are flat🤚 for single chords. When he's pulling a harmony from the same side, his hands switch from 🤚to ✌. Not taking away from the piano(and all the other air instruments), which are on point as well... just saying.. the level of detail he put into EVERY aspect of this performance is incredible.
Did you notice how on the remix part of it, where he included the voices into his song, he could only take the girl and the dude selling weed into it, but the show ended with "Mr. Burnham" still there, unaffected by the song? Because while he can drown out the people wanting to be friends with him or looking down on him he was still unable to escape the industry trying to make money out of him.
I loved your insight on this. I had never noticed before how he drowned out the voices with the music. And after you mentioned it I know that that was exactly his intent. To expand on what you said about him taking their bullying and turning it into his show, I kinda felt like he was literally taking control back from them. Up till then their voices hadn’t changed. But not only did he control their voice, he changed their tune. He used autotune to make their voices into something different, something better. It’s been years since I first saw this special and I’m still getting blown away by his genius.
Cool thing about this song that most reactors don't realize but I'm so glad you did: By the end, the music is very literally drowning out the negative voices surrounding Bo. He powers through them with music.
9:30 that's an interesting interpretation. i think that kind of hand-wave gesture we see him do is his way of looping the last four bars in this impromptu fantasy music software he's introduced to us. it doesn't seem like the most intuitive gesture, as we can see given how you misinterpreted it. but he wasn't exactly going to interrupt the performance to explain a new mechanic of this fantasy scenario we're all playing along with, so i think we can give him some slack in that regard.
You've honestly become my favourite person to react to Bo Burnham, the way you try to analyse all the details and really understand the meaning is great. I really hope you continue reacting to his songs, there isn't any wrong choices when it comes to Bo imo. Some of my personal favourites are "Lower your expectations", "Rant" (not the Kanye one, there is another), "Kill yourself", "Words, words, words" (such amazing wordplay, it's a must in my books) and "This funny feeling" from Inside. Hope you enjoy any of his songs you decide to listen to!
He practices and memorizes every single second of his entire show every little thing is scripted, but this performance in particular really shows it off
I just want to see a full two hour reaction to Inside. I don’t even care who it is, I just want someone who understands it to the full extent reacting to that masterpiece.
Honestly the memorization must have been torture, I just imagine him sitting there trying to memorize the hand movements for the song while the lyrics remind him of everything he’s been told or had gone through throughout the peak of his popularity. I don’t know how someone could do that, and to me it shows how strong of a person he is, or at least was (I haven’t seen his new album yet). In a way, I envy his strength and perseverance.
I love how when he points to the ground you get “I am satan, lord of darkness” out of no where lol. But when he points to the sky (where god should be/ have something to say), its just crickets 😂
I heard that Tim Minchin was actually one of Bo’s comedic inspirations. And I can understand why. Tim in incredibly clever, his comedic timing is impeccable. And no shade to Bo’s cause his piano playing is amazing, but Tim is on another level. Like Tim has actually composed musicals. I would definitely start with Prejudice. It’s one of his best known and for good reason.
Thanks man this is one of the most detailed reactions to my favorite Bo Burnham skit. I appreciate the way you delve into his content with your head on a swivel
Greet reaction vid! This song is one of the most terrifying things Bo has ever made, in my opinion. Everything before the piano starts is just this... panicked anxious dread? I love it, but it simultaneously scares the shit out me.
Keep coming back to this reaction. You nail themes of what he's going for without belabouring the point and also acknowledging there's room for other interpretation. Mate you keep crushing these.
I appreciate your insights on Bo's material. I see a lot of reactors gloss over, misinterpret, or outright disrespect him and his art. Thanks for paying attention.
Thank you so much for pausing on "you could come play some songs for us". Every reaction I've ever seen somehow misses that this hypothetical former classmate came in and not only tried to use Bo for status, they somehow expected him to *work* for them for free.
Another Bo Burnham bit you should really react to is his country song "Pandering" I'm sure based on its title that you can guess what it's about lol it's from Make Happy
You're so freacking accurate on your assumption with the song oh my god i love you, pretty much every other reactors don't even get close to the level of comprehension you have of him and the meanings he puts in his shows
Please do Prejudice by Tim Minchin, it’s one of my absolute favs! Also, Not Perfect by Tim Minchin makes me cry every time but it’s absolutely beautiful! Love you reacts!
If you watch all three of his specials back to back it all begins to make sense and you can slowly watch his decent into depression and his cries for help become more and more apparent, its really sad. Reminds me of other comedians struggles with depression, like Robin Williams.
As a big Bo fan, I have been watching a ton of react videos from small channels as an excuse to live vicariously through people's first experience with his content and you're one of the few that actually seems to add to the videos and get the deeper meanings on the first try. Good on you. Have my sub.
Sorry to comment on an old video, but this is the most insightful reaction to this song I've seen! Well done. Also I have a recurring fear that one day I'll run into Bo in public and the only thing I'll be able to say is "Bo! Oh my god!"
I admire that you always seem to get what is trying to be portrayed by the artist. You are quite intelligent yourself & your reactions are definitely a fave of mine. Please keep doing more Bo Burnham songs sir. 🥰☺️✌🏻
you‘re a BRILLIANT analyst. I look at other reaction videos, and then I come back to yours and it‘s just amazing. You see behind the surface, you notice the essence and the details. It‘s a pleasure watching you react and analyse :))
I love how deep you read into it. Bo is truly an artist and you help me have a deeper understanding of music I've listened to for years. You got me subbed with bell on bro
i saw We Think We Know You soon after it came out. i was absolutely blown away. my ghast was flabbered. i had never seen anything like it. is it a song? performance art? i don't think it could be categorized. i was in absolute awe of the talent.
This is prob the best reaction I've seen to this song. I love this song so much and I feel like every reaction vid I watched for it didn't like give that same feeling to me. You made great points and didn't pause too much or anything. I feel like when Bo made this song, he was hoping to have people like you watch him, bc you actually got the message.
I love when you share your thoughts on all the meanings of everything because although there are some that I took to mean different things, it’s so interesting to hear another that I never thought of, but ALSO there are some things you said that I never even thought had meaning in the first place and it was so cool to see that!! Keep it up
I randomly saw a thumbnail to your video in my suggestions about 40 minutes ago, I'm now 3 videos in and I f'ing love your channel dude.. Instant subscribe from me, you're the first I've watched where I actually felt you were sincere and honest! And you understand and listen to what you are reacting to! Big fan already!
Art is Dead came out before this, in his first special Words, Words, Words. That whole subject does really stay a evolving theme that you've definitely noticed right away
Words, Words, Words was his first hour special. He had a half hour special on Comedy Central a week after he graduated high school, if I remember correctly.
This miming segment, and the ones he did at the start and in the middle of this special, are inspired by Tim Minchin's "So Fucking Rock", which was the opening skit of his second special, and a standalone short film version exists too. That was in turn inspired by a Rowan Atkinson sketch about playing invisible drums. There are a million reactions on RUclips to Tim Minchin songs like "Prejudice", "Inflatable You", and "Confessions", but if you ask me, his real gems are songs like "Beauty", "Not Perfect", "The Fence", "Thank You God", "You Grew On Me", "The Good Book", "Cont", or his poems like "Storm" and "Angry (Feet)" Bo Burnham seems to quote Minchin's "Beauty" in his song "#Deep"
As a creative type person, he’s one of the few people that when I see them perform, I’m genuinely jealous. This little tiff he’s had the last five years, will only make him better, as evident by his latest. There have been a lot of musical comics, and Bo is just on another level, especially musically. All this shit is original. And its not just simple chord progressions with a poppy melody over the top. This is high level stuff, with really impactful chord and key changes. And he does these things musically to support his lyric/comedy, and it all just synergizes. He knows what he’s doing, is what I’m saying......and his content is on fuckin Netflix for a reason.
I think the bits with everything continuing after he stopped doing them can be representing how everything he does is never ending, and it just continues to happen, no matter whether he wants it or not
You have a keen eye on stuff, nice reaction man. I enjoyed the part where bo did the "ok enough" gesture but the voices still continued because i thought the same aswell but no one seemed to notice because it was kind of subtle you know.
I remember when i was barely in highschool and this special came out. I heard this song and it felt like it completed me at that time. I spent hours for a few nights memorizing those hand movements, listening to the song on loop till i got it down perfectly. I never recorded it or anything, but it's a bittersweet memory
You're impressed by his performance. Now imagine doing all that while having panic attacks before, during and after performing live. Welcome to Bo's life.
Your reactions to Bo never disappoint, thanks for doing them. I would love to see you react to Tim Minchin as well, I'd suggest Prejudice (most accessible/obviously funny), Storm (a 9 minute beat poem masterpiece), The Good Book (IMO the best place to start for his more theological material).
I have watched "We Think We Know You" like I don't know how many times, its supper impressive, however, you offer some interesting ideas and thoughts on this that I had not thought of, Bo IMHO is an incredible artist who is absolutely masterful in telling a story, your take on this was interesting as well, he really did use all the criticism from people and turned it against itself and proving they do not know him. Really interesting stuff here. this performance is simply a masterpiece of craftmanship, as far as I know and I could be wrong with timing But I think Bo mentioned one time that he spent 3 years on this show "What" which this is part of in the end.
U deserve much more subs bro, your interpretation of his work so interesting and like no one's elses. Thank u and good luck! (Also: check out Wilbur soot's songs, really good stuff)
This was an exercise we were taught to do in school. It was supposed to be a tool to transform the critic voice- your own and things others have said. When it works it can be cathartic & transformative. Making friends with the monsters inside your head so to speak. The drawback was that not every kid was equipped with the fortitude to have that negativity loop. I had the breakthrough that this was like a boot camp when going through it. Break you completely down to rebuild you. It was a really good school that really tried to give us tools for coping with life. However, I don't think a lot of the ways it would be done would be approved of today.
I love Tim Minchin! Prejudice for sure, but also If I Didn't Have You, Darkside, and Rock and Roll Nerd are some of his best :) Edit: Just wanted to also say that your consistently astute analysis of what you react to is what makes you a cut above most other reaction channels. Please keep up the excellent work.
YES. I've been waiting for this one. I LOVE your Bo reactions. Thank you for doing this!! I recommend Left Brain, Right Brain next. :) Also I would love you hear you'd opinions on his song Rant.
I've watched an unhealthy number of reaction videos to Bo's art and your perspective is always spot-on and insightful. Cheers

Can we all just appreciate how this dude just put on an entire performance, LIVE, and didn't speak a word? It's just so incredible.
Teenage girl here,,,, yeah I relate to Bo's stuff more than I should.

@@TuffMelon yeah lmao a very short look
The manager part was sort of the reason why Bo dropped “what” on RUclips on his own. Refusing to be owned and his content rights ripped from him
That is fantastic
My interpretation of this show is that bo is being offended by these 3 people and then he turns all his problems into music. That's exactly what he did on his last shows and on the inside. In "we think we know you" he also increases the music until he can't hear the insults.
Ohhhhh! That's really smart!
This is exactly it, he's taking all the negativity and focusing it towards his art and using it to his advantage

Your takes on Bo Burnham are so spot on. You made me think in this video about a few things too, nodding in agreement. Great channel!
Seriously the best analysis I've seen of this song - thank you!
Art is Dead came out before this, in his first special Words, Words, Words. That whole subject does really stay a evolving theme that you've definitely noticed right away
Words, Words, Words was his first hour special. He had a half hour special on Comedy Central a week after he graduated high school, if I remember correctly.
@@BryceLK Right, it was an episode of Comedy Central Presents. That for sure came first I just don't fully consider that a special.
You are literally god tier
I watched this and I’m like damn there is a lot of symbolism
This miming segment, and the ones he did at the start and in the middle of this special, are inspired by Tim Minchin's "So Fucking Rock", which was the opening skit of his second special, and a standalone short film version exists too. That was in turn inspired by a Rowan Atkinson sketch about playing invisible drums.
There are a million reactions on RUclips to Tim Minchin songs like "Prejudice", "Inflatable You", and "Confessions", but if you ask me, his real gems are songs like "Beauty", "Not Perfect", "The Fence", "Thank You God", "You Grew On Me", "The Good Book", "Cont", or his poems like "Storm" and "Angry (Feet)"
Bo Burnham seems to quote Minchin's "Beauty" in his song "#Deep"
Whoa never made the connection between those 3 videos, good observation!
I second ‘The Fence’ ‘Thank You God’ ‘You Grew on Me’ and ‘Cont’
@@HeartMindConnection Basically the advice is "Watch the whole Heritage Orchestra special"
@@PenneySounds Totally, that whole performance is incredible!
One of the first reactors i've ever watched who can actually think about the subtext of actions on stage. Props to you sir, subbed.
I like the way you interpret things, you're really insightful unlike many people that just make videos laughing because they feel they need to
I think the bits with everything continuing after he stopped doing them can be representing how everything he does is never ending, and it just continues to happen, no matter whether he wants it or not
You have a keen eye on stuff, nice reaction man. I enjoyed the part where bo did the "ok enough" gesture but the voices still continued because i thought the same aswell but no one seemed to notice because it was kind of subtle you know.
When I was watching this reaction, I was gonna put something of my opinion of the song down here, but you took the words out of my mouth.
This actually might be the best bo burnham analysis I’ve seen yet for real
I remember when i was barely in highschool and this special came out. I heard this song and it felt like it completed me at that time. I spent hours for a few nights memorizing those hand movements, listening to the song on loop till i got it down perfectly. I never recorded it or anything, but it's a bittersweet memory
IVE BEEN WAITING FOR YOU TO REACT TO THIS IM SO EXCITED!!!
Haven’t heard any other channels talk about instigation and continuing even when he stops. Very interesting, super clever.
You're impressed by his performance. Now imagine doing all that while having panic attacks before, during and after performing live. Welcome to Bo's life.
I really liked the way you analyze this! And other Burnham songs! Interesting to watch!
Love your Bo analysis!!! Best Ive ever seen.
Suffi- he must be really good at the pattern and memorization with three.
Little did you know it’s the whole song 💕 great analogy 😊👏🏽👏🏽
This is the best reaction to this song I have seen so far!
Excellent, thank you for the direction
I really enjoy your Bo reactions and would love to see more, thank you for another great video
Really interesting stuff here. this performance is simply a masterpiece of craftmanship, as far as I know and I could be wrong with timing But I think Bo mentioned one time that he spent 3 years on this show "What" which this is part of in the end.
your Bo reactions are my absolute favorite please do more!!
Been waiting for this one for so long!! My next recommendation would be “Sad” by Bo Burnham
U deserve much more subs bro, your interpretation of his work so interesting and like no one's elses. Thank u and good luck! (Also: check out Wilbur soot's songs, really good stuff)
I really like your style of reactions and your thought process is really insightful. Thank you.
Great insight bud! You really have a talent for seeing the meaning behind the metaphors.
I feel like he could do the pointing thing with lots of hard work but also because he’s so amazing at piano.
Tim Minchen - Storm is definitely worth a watch.
Great reaction, best analysis of this song I've seen
I love Tim Minchin! Prejudice for sure, but also If I Didn't Have You, Darkside, and Rock and Roll Nerd are some of his best :)
Edit: Just wanted to also say that your consistently astute analysis of what you react to is what makes you a cut above most other reaction channels. Please keep up the excellent work.
Agreed on all song suggestions & also agree that reactions are next level from Suffi!
Thank you :) I really appreciate that
I can now see him as an infant tapping his head while rubbing his belly, while switching rotation and changing hands ☺
YES. I've been waiting for this one. I LOVE your Bo reactions. Thank you for doing this!! I recommend Left Brain, Right Brain next. :) Also I would love you hear you'd opinions on his song Rant.
