What a genuine conversation this was with the snooker legend Stephen Hendry!
Stephen dominated the game of snooker in his prime winning seven World titles, six Masters titles and five UK Championships.
Dubbed the 'King of the Crucible', Stephen changed the game of snooker and won like no one else before him or since. Many would argue that Stephen is the greatest snooker player of all time.
As with other sporting heroes who dominated their sport, there are priorities that you have to make and characteristics you need to operate at the very top of elite sport.

For me the greatest.
An absolute gentleman and proper player.
No fucking around or antics.
I remember Stephen practicing relentlessly on table 1 at Miller’s Snooker Club in Broxburn in the early 80s, when he would have been 14/15. I was a member at the club and played maybe three times a week then and Stephen was there virtually every time I went. Even at that age, what a talent and what drive and determination.

A born winner at 90s snooker which was woefully poor compared with now.
@@matthewphilip1977 that is utter pish imo. I don't think it's better now at all. There is a serious lack of talent right now in the game, worst maybe ever as no-one is playing the sport
For me, Hendry was the Tiger Woods of snooker. He was so mentally strong when he dominated, his belief and will to win dragged him over the line when things didn't go his way. He could perform at extraordinary levels when the pressure was highest, just like Woods, Federer, Michael Johnson. Nobody dominated like Hendry did when he was at his peak in the 90s.
Steven hendry took snooker to another level, he started one visit snooker which was once your at the table with a chance of a pot ( clear up with a 100 break) also he opened the reds as soon as possible, instead of picking off the loose ones as they did in the 1980s ,that is why the players are so good now
In his early career, a semi professional snooker player said "I keep hearing people say he smashes the pack as soon as possible. I'd say he carves the pack up". Now go back and watch his early matches. What you'll see is him running off the pack to maintain position on the black, loosening the pack so he can choose whether to keep carving or go into the pack a few shots later. He smashed the pack at the right time & from the right place to give maximum chance of being on a red not "as soon as possible'.

That was the best interview I've heard with Stephen Hendry. Two intelligent blokes (Jake and Damian) with very well thought of questions that never get asked to Stephen to address his new comeback and himself as person. I will probably listen to this a few times.
Stephen was fearless,focussed and had a will to win all at the same time it clicked
I never appreciated how good Hendry was until he retired. For 10 years he was an absolute machine.

That was probably the best and interesting interview I've ever seen. To have a 7×word champion sit and be so honest and inciteful was so refreshing to see. Most people don't open up and show their inner demons like that, they usually sit their and blow their own trumpet 🎺. Fascinating stuff to listen to, but also shows the real behind the scenes stuff and what truly goes through the mind of the person who is not only at the top of their sport, but the best in the world at said sport. Hendry mentioned Tiger Woods and he's mentioned Michael Schumacher in the past,and both of them guys were the dominant force in their sport and all 3 of them had that unrelenting drive to be the best, but to hear Hendry say that he loved having the target on his back was something not many people can handle. 5 of Hendry's world titles came against Jimmy White in the finals and I remember watching them live on TV, and because Hendry is Scottish and Jimmy White was English and the final being played in England, the sound of all the booing and shouting when Hendry walked out was really bad. Especially when snooker is renowned for being a quiet respectful game, but Jimmy White was the people's champion and the relationship between Scots and English in sports is far more than just a rivalry, so to be Scottish playing in England against the English fan favourite and beat him time and time again must of been truly exceptional and have ice running through his veins to play against Jimmy White, who was a truly exceptional player himself but Jimmy had 99% of the crowd for him, while Hendry knew that almost every single person in the crowd wanted him to lose and many of them hated him too. So to me that shows just what High Performance truly is.
Kudos to the interviewers here. Extremely accomplished performance to extract some great insights from this legendary player.

As a kid I hated Hendry as I always wanted to see Jimmy White win a championship, as I grew older I realised how much of a bad ass stepehen was and how lucky I was to see him play as I grew up whilst snooker was in it prime. Good Times.
im the same, i never really liked him, but when looking back now you see how good he was.
Him, Sampras, waqar, Wasim, Prince Naseem, R9 and Lomu defined the 90s for me.
Chuckling here at the idea of Hendry being a 'badass'. Mug of Horlicks before bed at 9pm, unless he was allowed up late to play at snooker in formal evening wear.

Winning machine. I remember him once saying his game plan was to get his foot on the opponent's neck and to keep it there. Most consistently ruthless player snooker has ever known.

I never really liked Hendry when was I younger because he always won. Now, I look back and I’m totally in awe of him and realise how great he was.
Stephen always comes across very open and honest. This is a very personal interview attempting to analyse the rise and fall of an exceptional individual. We will never truly know all the answers but one thing remains: Stephen is and always will be one of the greatest natural players ever to lift a cue.

Superb watch by interviewers who ask insightful questions and are genuinally interested in the answers. I was lucky enough to watch a 17 year old Stephen Hendry at the qualifiers for the World Championships in Preston in 1987. You could see he was destined for greatness even then.

I think that's just about the best interview of a high level sportsman I've seen in years. They asked all the right questions and Stephen answered them opening and honestly giving us some true insight.

Some really brilliant advice. The hotel, practice, talent alone is not enough, ability to play under pressure, no magic secret. We got so tantalisingly close to the invisible powers or forces, which I think these brilliant snooker players have, yet cannot say what it is. Like everything in life, they have it for a while, then it fades away.
Very enjoyable interview. I hated that he kept Jimmy at bay in those finals but he was a fantastic attacking player. Deserved all his victories.

Great interview and no ego aboard despite his greatness in snooker. I believe what he,s telling you without finding the words. The human body & brain is drying out and the senses are wearing down. 7 hours practise at 50+ is exhausting.The best alm

This is a brilliant interview, and finally the question was asked that i thought would never happen. When you mentioned Anders Erriccson and deliberate practice. the conclusion i came to was you need to do a lot of hard work but there is also a raw talent. you either have it or you dont. Thanks

It’s interesting hearing him talk about the years when he was in decline. I remember two famous victories by Steve Davis when he was past his best (Ronnie O’Sullivan) and way past his best (John Higgins). From the smile on his face after those matches, it seemed to mean more than the world titles in the ‘80s. I wonder if there were any matches that Stephen won after his peak that were particularly significant for him.

@@jhewitthunt There was zero robotic about Hendry a genius on the table. Took every shot on, straight into the pack no messing. Master break builder. Never bothered about safety play. Would still dominate today in his pomp with the open style of play around today. Lots more tournaments nowadays.
@@michaelmulhall5007 I wouldn't disagree. Still not as entertaining as Ronnie though. Let's bet honest, Ronnie is like a more talented Jimmy White. Everyone loved Jimmy too, but he didn't have the pure talent or killer instinct Ronnie has. Ronnie at his best would beat Hendry at his best. I think most people would agree with that. Hendry had better matchplay, and that is a Ronnie's biggest weakness. He gets bored too easily. If he had Hendrys focus, he would have definitely won more world titles by now....

Stephen Hendry. The most brutal snooker player I've ever seen. He dominated the sport for a decade. Ice cold killer instincts. I remember that gaze. Total focus all the time. Ronnie has more natural talent. More than even Jimmy White and Alex Higgins at their best. More than Judd Trupp and Neil Robertson today. Ronnie is the greatest natural talent of all time. But Stephen Hendry like Steve Davis before him, dominated the game. Now, Stephen Hendry is a great commentator. Back then I was a huge Jimmy White fan, still am to this day. Hendry was to Jimmy, what Steve was to Alex. They were so consistently strong. We were lucky to see the Davis - Hendry years. And one player I'll never forget. Tony Drago. From Malta. He played with way too much emotion. Wonderful talent. He may have been even faster than Ronnie at his fastest. Tony was very emotional. I swear there were times he was on the verge of crying in his chair. Anyway, my pick for the world champion this year. Mark Selby. He's been going through tough times recently, suffering from depression. I wish him all the best. I think he'll come back strong and win the world title again.

Hendry was the King of the 90 and what a player he was.Only O'Sullivan and Higgins I rate as the best I've ever seen and the tournaments they won despite playing all the best players in snooker and Williams who has won about 40 tournaments himself.
As far as I'm concerned hendry is still king of snooker cause no player as beat his record of the world titles in a row .Ronnie as won it 5 times now but not in a row so I think hendry is king of snooker till some one beats his record ....and I think he will win again once he is back up to standard it will be hard but he as the talent to do it again

Hendry and Davis two best ever - White and O’Sullivan best natural talents, most exciting and skilful a joy to watch, artists on a table.
i can't tell whether jimmy wasted his talent or just didnt have it up top, but he is not in the same league as the others. davis was great, but there wasn't the same level of competition back in his era. ronnie's 6 world titles are worth more than davis' six. if ronnie gets a 7th, then i think he even pushes hendry into 2nd place, as he will then own or part-own Every major record in snooker.
if you asked hendry and davis they would both unequivocally say that ron was the greatest
@@danjackson7758 well, he did get his 7th, but what really pushes Hendry into second place is the fact that Ronnie is 46 years old and still at the top of his game.
Hard to pick anyone over the Rocket at this point. Gotta give the goat to Ronnie because of how long he’s been at the top. Heck, he’s world No. 1 again. Only Phil Taylor comes to mind to be as great for so long.

I'm running out of superlatives for this pod. You 2 are simply superb at these interviews. I have to stop myself being too gushy with you! What I love about these Pods is how totally authentic the guests come across ss. Either they are very good actors, or you both manage to put them at total ease. I think it's the latter. I find myself rewinding 30/60 seconds more and more on these Pods to relisten to something I found so interesting. Brilliant brilliant pod AGAIN! Well done fellas. BTW, I love snooker, but used to hate Stephen when he was at the top, because he was a boring robot. But I really like him as a pundit. So will be interesting to see if his playing return comes with his personality 👍

Hendry is by far the greatest snooker player to ever live. Nobody has ever had complete control of a cue ball like Hendry or complete dominance of even the best players like O'sullivan and John Higgins. Hendry at his very best beats O'Sullivan at his very best or anyone for that matter. We'll never see another player play as well as Hendry at his best ever again. He was truly a rare breed of talent.

Mentally prime Hendry is superior to Ronnie/more dominant in 90's, but talent wise, I don't think so. Class of 92 all outlasted Hendry, and are still relevant today all nearly 50, against younger high-level competition, they fell off the top/ lost form for periods and bounced back.
They didn't fall off hard like Steven did after 30-35.
That's what some of you guys don't want to acknowledge, plus how Ronnie's personal issues held his career back until he resolved them. Judd does not have the same issues, a major reason why he wins a lot.
Hendry had a strict mentor/manager around to make sure he maximised his potential and stay focused.
Not to mention Ronnie's stature in the modern game in UK and abroad, the last great personality left in the game.
I think Hendry is still the greatest ever player. I used to hate him so much when he was constantly beating Jimmy White in the world finals. Now I realise that it was respect not hate. He was formidable.
Amazing interview by a snooker great, even now I still watch snooker because of Stephen even his commentry is so insightful.
If you can get Ronnie on this show, i would definitely pay top dollar to watch that, the guy has been through a lot yet still at the top of the game. Putting High-performance in his everyday life to still remain at the top!

There was never a doubt during this time. There's always a doubt with the rest of the field.
Never won first five in a row. No first time winner has ever defended it.

The word you were stumbling to find Stephen was 'Dedication'. Put it in big bold sharpie on your fridge. You will still need it. But in saying that, you can never be considered shit because you have the achievements to point to. You can always say to detractors that "I've done this, what have you done?".

I don't think anyone would consider Hendry shit, especially when he was in his prime, there was a 3-4 year spell it didn't look like he could miss a ball, he struggled later in his career but that was mainly due to not being as motivated and not putting in as many hours into practice, I suppose after I've won 7 World Championships and become a millionaire I wouldn't be thinking much about grinding out at the practice table every day.
It's an issue a lot of top sportspeople have It's easier to focus when you are still hungry but after he broke the 6 world championships record he lost his motivation he didn't really have anything else to aim for he'd more than fulfilled his ambitions.

Interested listening to Hendry. Like his honesty about how selfish he was. The interviewers were rubbish. Why did they spend so long on his lack of commitment on his comeback - he just loves the sport and wants to play a bit as a hobby
He wants to win again but not confident enough to say it .. I believe he still has it
Self worth I think is the biggest thing you can get out of your work yes it's obviously better if your really good at your job but it's the old adage of you love what you do for work then it's never feel like it's work
Its amazing how you can leave school with no qualifications and still turn into super rich by being good at what you do!
Love Hendry's brutal honesty here. First time I've seen him talk about his decline in such depth. Hendry has and always will be ( along with Stefi Graph ) my favourite professional sports players of all time. For the entire decade of the 90's they utterly and ruthlessly dominated their sports! Ronnie may now be regarded as the greatest for snooker and Serena for tennis after eventually surpassing most of their records however nobody has ranked No.1 longer than either of them still and nobody has ruled their respective sports like they did. Stefi's Goldern Slam ( 4 grand slams and Olympic gold in the same season ) will likely be equalled and Hendry's achievement of 7 World titles in 9 year period ( 5 consecutive World titles ) will ever be matched.
