    Good to hear from you! :) I would approach programming the SR18 with an external sequencer if I could help it. Programming the unit becomes less and less of a challenge the more you use it of course. It has been many years since I programmed my SR-16.

      Hi Jack North here again thanks for the advice. I don’t quite understand what you are saying. I am not very technical. I have found a way round it. I took a lead from the drum machine into the auxiliary import and that seems to work. Thank you for you help I think that fixes it now, Best witches thanks again

    Hi Stephen, thanks for your videos - they've been really informative. I'm a long time SR16 user moving to the SR18 and am curious about using bass patterns in the context of a song. I think you may have hinted at the answer to my question at the end of this video. Assuming my song has a chord progression requiring different bass lines or the same baseline starting on a different root note - will I need to save each bass transposition in a separate pattern in order to use them in a song. I didn't see any way in the manual to specify a new transposition for the same pattern within the song step..

    • @StephenMendes
      @StephenMendes  2 года назад +2

      you are absolutely right ... you have to save a different "pattern" for every single change in Bass Line..... which is why I would never use this SR18 for anything other than drumming...... I play a "proper" bass on a bass guitar and record it in a DAW or use a keyboard (and record a MIDI track).... the Bass "layer" as it's called in the useless manual is really USELESS unless you are satisfied with a repetitive .... monotonous .... "thump"..... and if you are concerned with "pitch" of the "thump" .... well .... good luck with that one .... just being brutally honest ... so our readers/viewers will understand that this "bass layer" is nothing more than a "demo" gimmick and not get too excited about it

      @@StephenMendes l was looking for the same thing, i think once you get the hang of it transposing bass lines into different section of the songs it wont be that bad, bit of mucking around o well l run mine through a mixer irons out all the thumps and bumps of it.l like using it for composing new ideas you can get a good groove out of it.
      Your Videos have been really helpful thanks.

      @@StephenMendes thanks for your thoughts Stephen. I have come to the conclusion that the bass can be used effectively only when I compose a pattern for a particular song. Unlike drum / percussion patterns, the bass patterns are not ‘reusable’ across multiple songs - well at least not to the same extent.. In all fairness though, the range of bass sounds available in the machine, and the expression possible via MIDI in, you can get some great accompaniments. Thanks again for the tutorial..

      @@billyb2489 of course you are correct..... it just doesn't suit ME 🙂 and the way I make my bass track.... but I only bought SR18 for the drums anyway. so all my former statements were in response to viewer comments ..... thanks for letting us know you were able to use it 👍

    Hi, thanks a lot!! I want to buy an alesis. And I have a question: do you know the MIDI NOTE RANGE for the bass? (I mean "from A3 to C5", for example) or can you tell me what is your midi controller in the video, and I can figure it out... thanks!!

    • @StephenMendes
      @StephenMendes  Год назад +1

      I believe you can get 3 octaves out of it ..... in any case, my MIDI controller is a Roland A800-PRO ..... I will make another video about ADDITIONAL facts about the Bass layer ..... the various bass tones available ..... and the "percussion" gated synth "chords" that you can have playing in the background (and the synth tones for that).... I will try to make this video before next week

    Thanks for your video. Do you know if it's possible to send midi CC messages from the SR18 to an external device?

    • @StephenMendes
      @StephenMendes  Год назад

      NO...... the SR18 does not support CC messaging

    When I plug my guitar into the drum machine, it makes an electrical buzzing sound how do I get rid of it?

    • @StephenMendes
      @StephenMendes  6 месяцев назад

      This is (usually) a grounding issue ..... most amplifiers have a "grounding" switch and use a 3-pin mains plug ..... unfortunately the Alesis SR18 is "floating ground" when on batteries ..... possibly even when using the power brick, but if you ARE using the power brick you could try plug it in the opposite way (to reverse the power pins) ..... other than that you could connect a ground wire to the guitar and connect that to a cold water pipe in your house (but that is kind of NOT too cool) and would not be practical if you are playing gigs ..... have you tried using a different cord (cable ) with your guitar because a faulty cord could cause this also ?

    Could it be configured to use a keyboard controlled by midi to ch 10 for the drums and another to ch 2 for the bass? Thank you

    How do you turn the bass off and play drums only with a controller?

    • @StephenMendes
      @StephenMendes  Год назад

      while pressing the MUTE button ...... you also press the BASS button..... repeat again to turn it back on....... you set the incoming MIDI channel and the NOTES to trigger the drums in SYSTEM SETTINGS .... plug in your MIDI controller and away you go..... I will make a video to show you how shortly 👍

    WHY Did Alesis Bother Putting MIDI Into the Sr18 Drum Machine If The Bass notes Can't Recognize Keyboard " CHORDS To CONTROL SINGLE BASS NOTES!!?? HOPLESS!!!! .

    • @StephenMendes
      @StephenMendes  5 месяцев назад

      The MIDI is only good for backing up and restoring the internal memory ...... during "performance mode" the ONLY thing that works is the TIMING signals ...... MIDI clock .... it's a pathetic excuse for a drum machine but Alesis is known for cheap gear .... I bought it to replace a Yamaha RX11 but I have never really used it for any purpose besides making a couple RUclips videos (which have proved to be immensely popular because the printed User Manual has no index and is the worst written piece of garbage) ..... sorry to be so blunt about it.

    le problème avec ces présentateurs c'est qu'ils parlent trop et ne jouent pas assez. un musicien à surtout besoin d'écouter pour se rendre compte. dommage. je zappe après quelques minutes.
