Finally I found your lesson. So many people have SR-18 lessons on you-tube and it's a lot of talking and not explaining anything. Thanks for posting this it is very helpful.
Thanks so much! I used to be in a band back in the 90’s. Had the Alesis SR16 & a Boss drum machine I programmed for the band. I totally forgot how to do it. My drum machines broke & I got married, had to forgo my musician lifestyle. Just now getting back to being solo again & I got an Alesis SR16 & the SR18! I am in heaven again! Thx so much I am a happy one man band programming drums & having a lovely time!
I used Zoom 234 drum machines since 98 and wrote hundreds of songs on them. I absolutely adored them, but they have been long discontinued. It became increasing difficult to find a used one that wasn't broken or didn't break within just a few weeks, was frustrating. Since I am not really a fan of building drum tracks using DAWs and software drums, I FINALLY pulled the trigger and decided to try out a different physical drum machine. I decided on the Alesis SR-18. An old dog learning a new trick about almost 25 years isn't always easy! So these videos have been a tremendous help. Great job, and thank you!
Will do. Just moved house and have taken my studio down. Will be a while before we move into our new house. When I eventually rebuild my new studio, I plan to do more videos, as I will have a better set up.
Very helpful. I was trying to figure out how to make tracks for my church. For songs and praise breaks. Now I have them thanks to you! So thank for helping me it really helped/helps a lot.
Finally getting around to seriously deep diving into your series. As a solo singer/songwriter, I invested in this thing to create everything completely. Thank you for being so clear and concise!
Much appreciated indeed !!! I haven't used the Alesis drum machines since I had the HR-16 and MMT-8 back in the day. The SR-18 has really stepped things up. ;-)
Examples like this video should have been at the beginning of all Sr 18 Alesis purchases. Best video to date Great Job. Guess I will take it out of the box now and start over.
My first drum machine was the Alesis HR:16. I later paired it with the HR:16-B. I skipped the SR-16 and have been shopping for an affordable drum machine now. It’s nice to see the control design from the HR:16 was carried over to this, more versatile unit. I think I’ll pick one of these up.
Amen dude much needed as the other comments say. I’ve seen another video with a different way but I like this way! Very simply explained and you went through the menus Thanks a million! Have not had a chance to dig into this machine yet and unlock some creative options but this is brilliant
If you learn any more or have any other good hacks and tips keep us updated! I’m just a guitarist on my own but would love to know more about how things go for making songs and more complex beats and fills etc Appreciated.
It definitely is a piece of equipment, easy does it for me l just got the drum machine pattern book to use with it just started today its going to be along process but it will be good once i get the hang of it, thanks for people like you explaining this stuff.
Thank you! I was given one of these as a gift, and you're right some of us don't pick this stuff up easily. @@80sman80 it's a great machine...but I am still having the "freezing up" problem. I have posted it on the fb users group...appears others have had it too, but no fix yet.
Great tutorial, efficient information and easy approach to each step toward completing a pattern/song , thanks, Mr. 80'sMan, Positive Vibe Curse on your band.

Don't worry not looking for a pen pal . No need to reply . Stay safe . From an old Muso who is struggling with also having to learn to be the engineer too . Stay safe . Big love to you & yours Bye.
Yes, I was born in the 60s and grew up through the 80s developing a love for 80s synths and synth related music. Unfortunately my studio is presently dismantled as we've sold our house and are renting while our new house is being built. So music has had to take a temporary leave of absence until Spring of next year. I do have a couple of synths set up in a bedroom with my computer, so I might be able to work on some simple projects in the meantime. However I have big plans going forward as soon as my new studio is built. Good to touch base and delighted my videos helped you. Live long & play.

Yes, you can write whole songs on the sr18 by writing your own User patterns, then piecing them together in Song Mode. I think I did a video on that....
Hello and thank you for your very informative videos. I'm an old bass player and this is my first foray into drum machines. I'm finding your videos very helpful. In this video, you demonstrate the open HiHat and it sounds like a Tsssip - open HiHat being closed. I've looked through the samples on the machine and not found a similar sound. Please can you tell me how you got that sound? I'd also like grabbed crash if you know what I mean. I hope this makes sense :)
Thanks for your nice comments. You get that open tiss ipp hi hat sound by hitting the open hi hat a fraction before hitting closed hi hat when your recording your patterns.
@@80sman80 Ah yes thank you. Oddly I just read that. It will only work if the Hats are assigned to a Group and not the default Multi. Thank you for responding and thank you again for the very helpful bids. Esp the quantizing fix. Is ite or is it old fashioned to be missing a Swing preset pattern?
I really appreciate your excellent tutorial! One question, maybe I may have missed you saying this but is there an included catalog of pre-recorded (factory installed) drum rhythms and matching fills patterns, or do you need to create everything from scratch? Thanks again!
Hii 80s man. Your videos are excellent for being accurate and understandable. Can I make patterns by mixing drum, percussion and bass sounds simultaneously? Congratulations and a million thanks for your help.
Great video sir! It got me started for sure. Does this machine fix timing issues if I screw up writing a beat. I have seen where it's supposed to but I am wondering how and if you have a video on it.
If you set the quantize setting to its minimum I.e. the note symbol + 1 bar, it should round up your beat despite you tapping the pads slightly off time. But if you want to write more complex patterns, then you will need to increase the quantize setting. Does this help?
I'm getting better with it. Another question I have is can I go back in and fix one note. Such as if my snare is off time on just one beat but my bass drum is on? Instead of recording the whole thing again? I have my quantinize set to +1
@@therichardnogginproject9012 yes you can. You can go back into Step Edit and just delete individual notes/drum sounds. Or just go back into User Pattern mode again and then in record mode, hold down Erase & whatever drum pad sound simultaneously that you wish to delete on that exact time/note. Then just re- tap that pad on the correct timing pattern
Great video!!! Could you go a little further and give an example of how you create drum patterns and fills from an actual song? How do you go about it. What steps do you take. 😊 Thanks
Any chance you will get around to making a another video soon? Anxious to learn how to program patterns, fills and bass lines for actual songs. The way you do for your band.
@@TheKbstrings ok, will get onto making more videos soon. Since making these videos, we've sold our house, rented for a year, bought a new house and now just built a new studio. I have one of these. HF. It's like you have to take a college course to know how to use these freaking things. Why do they make them so difficult to use? So far I only know how to tweak the presets. Which is basically really not knowing how to use it at all. Someone needs to teach us how to use these without a bunch of words just get to the s***. Skip the fluff and give us the f****** power course. Thank you
Hey bud thanks for the videos oh, I know you mentioned a few times in your parts 1,2, and 3 on the drum machine that you would be doing more complicated videos are they coming?
@@80sman80 I found that I can copy a preset pattern to the user pattern and edit it it there. what I would like to do is use the preset pattern I copied with my own written drum patterns, is that possible? The copy preset pattern I want to use is Rock 2 it does not have a number associated to it so I'm wondering how to put it together with my own drum patterns in song mode
Yes you can change individual drum sounds when in "Drum set" if you tap the appropriate pad and you can also change them further in "Record Setup". If you're still struggling, let me know and I'll go through it in more detail
In regards to viewing SR18 tutorials on You Tube, you are the most resourceful. In your tutorial you make reference to choosing your own personal drum track, that confused me. When I make attempt to choose a drum track from the drum set button, I always get the metronome click as in your tutorial, what am I doing wrong?
Thank you so much for your very kind words. Regarding the metronome, you can turn this off or lower volume, in Record Setup. It should be playing when you are in Record mode in User mode. It shouldn't be playing just when you play a pattern.
Great video bud. I’m on the fence about buying it. Can I record a guitar riff and some bass?? Maybe vocals? Or does anybody know what would work for that?? Gonna watch part 2🤘
I've had this little box for a year just using the presets. This video is a game changer for me.

Hey bud thanks for the videos oh, I know you mentioned a few times in your parts 1,2, and 3 on the drum machine that you would be doing more complicated videos are they coming?
Yes, I plan to do more but have no studio at present as we're moving house and waiting for new house to be finished. All my gear is in lockup
@@80sman80 is it OK if I ask you some questions when you get a chance,I'm having some difficulties..
@@monkabrahms7997 absolutely
@@80sman80 cool let me get my thoughts together I'll get back to you much appreciated
I've been wanting to learn how to use it, etc. Thanks
Glad I could help
thanks!
Can make more videos on the Alesis SR18 please
Yes, I plan to.
Great help, a lot easier to see it than read it Thanks! How do I change the sound of the kick and snare anyone out there knows ????
PERFECT TUTORIAL
Thank you, much appreciated
Hi could you do a tutorial on how to do a drum fill to bring another patter in
Hi, regretfully I don't have my sr18 anymore. I like to try different options as time goes on. So I'm now learning the drums on my new Mpc 1.
Great video bud. I’m on the fence about buying it. Can I record a guitar riff and some bass?? Maybe vocals? Or does anybody know what would work for that??
Gonna watch part 2🤘
Not sure what you mean by can you record guitar or vocals?
@@80sman80 well I noticed on the back there's an instrument input. is it just for playing along?
@@Humanumikey yeah, probably. I actually never used that feature.
Thanks again for making this! Love this thing 🤘
