I greatly admire Eric’s patience during the Milton call. Milton was floundering so hard, and then he ignored Eric when he did try to ask a (great) question. Milton clearly has no idea what he’s going to face in the real world on his “mission.

There are a couple reasons he would go back, and for sure meeting a romantic interest would be one. The other would be just loneliness and isolation that young people experience when they go away for the first time. Especially if they have had a tight family relationship and community.
It could be just drifted right towards the local Mormon community only out of desire for the comfort of home.

I enjoyed the call with Milton. He was respectful and honest (at least he believed what he said was correct). The team was respectful too. It showed it is possible to have opposing views and not get upset and angry. No one felt the need for slurs and curses, demonstrating that calls can go well.
I also enjoyed it because it gave a deeper understanding of how religion pins people down and keeps their brain on track to learn the doctoring thoroughly so even with a suspicion you are not correct, you can't leave. So on a whim this morning I looked up the phrase 'Skin of Evil' in the Bible; I remembered the phrase from a Star Trek episode title (the one where Tasha Yar gets murked by an inky sludge monster that embodied the evil of a whole world?) and thought maybe that's what Milton was referring to?
Anyway, closest the internet could help me find was in Micah 3, which refers to those who hate good and love evil tearing the skins off of people and butchering and cannibalizing them. It says nothing about skin color or the skin itself being evil, it is talking about evil people slaughtering God's people for food and God leaving the prophets who lead people astray in night/darkness/silence, refusing to answer them because of their abuses. He denies them visions and prophecy, reducing them to false prophets because they used their God-granted gifts to lead people into brutal sin. The phrase 'Skin of Evil' or 'Skin of Blackness' or 'Skin of Darkness' is not found, at least in any of the translations I looked through.
The darkness is referred to here metaphorically but again, nowhere in the verse is anyone described as having a skin of darkness or blackness; It's God leaving those who abuse the faith of the people to lead them astray, denying them the 'light' of his attention and wisdom, leaving them blind. The only 'skin' that is referred to is that which is being torn from people by those led into sin by abusive prophets, and the only darkness is that resulting from the 'sun' 'going down' on them and leaving those prophets in silence and shadow without God's insight.
I'd hazard to guess this is what Milton was referring to, it just doesn't really line up or meaningfully support his assertion that the term in the Book of Mormon was also metaphorical; Though it does provide a handy literary excuse for anyone trying to duck out of the whole skin of blackness thing, provided no-one looks too close at the contents of the verses in question to see how the language differs.
Let alone how the Book of Mormon's reference was historically used to support racial discrimination and abuse until it became so untenable a position that they had to find a way to weasel out of it through apologia without having to admit that the text was just wrong to begin with.

Just like the two stone tablets that Yahweh was supposed to have engraved with his commandments, the golden plates have somehow never appeared in reality. People lie and tell tall stories in order to deceive others.

1:55:50 "You're describing how fragile she is and how dishonest she has to be and how she hasn't recovered from- So what kind of comfort religion has it been? It's not been a healing type of comfort, it's been a drug kind of comfort, it's been a masking of the symptoms, it's been an innoculation without a genuine immunity. She hasn't been healed, she's been covered. Religion uh- the comfort of religion isn't comfort it's denial. It's uh uh it's putting things off, it's compartmentalization, and it's tribalism. That's what comfort- that's the comfort of religion. That's where it comes from. When you're sitting there asking, 'What if I take her comfort away?' it's like you're asking, 'What if I take her oxycontin away?'"

In 1976 I attended the Hill Cumorah Pageant. It was America’s bicentennial. It rained in torrents. My sister, the Mormon convert told us that the rain would subside for the show. It did just drizzle during the show. Wow, I’m so glad that she got away from this shit.
