    I just met Doug Williams at a bar here in Ashburn, Virginia, last night. I asked him if I could get a picture with him and offered to buy him a beer if he agreed. He declined the beer because he doesn't drink (which I didn't know), but he agreed to let me get a picture with him anyway.
    I was flattered that he took his time to talk with me a bit, even asking a bit about me and what I do, etc. We talked for probably 10 minutes or so. Since he declined the beer, I offered to pay for his food, but he declined that too, insisting that he will pay for himself.
    He's a really really good guy, a very sincere person.
    I'm glad that I could say that I met Doug Williams. I will remember those 10 minutes or so for the rest of my life.

    Doug's a good, good guy. I remember once driving he and two other players to the cafeteria after football practice, when it was pouring rain and they didn't want to get soaked. I also had a math class with him at GSU. I wouldn't trade my undergrad years at Grambling for the world.

    Somehow, I think that hyperextension was a blessing. Doug Williams threw one of the hardest, longest balls any QB ever threw. He spent that magical second quarter of the Super Bowl throwing off his back foot. I think it took a little off his passes, gave him a softer touch, and made them an easier catch for the receivers, especially Rickie Saunders!

      Also the racists in the media as well as the NFL used to say "hit a black player in the knee and he's worthless after that." U don't hear that nowadays 😄

      I found the Eagles v. Bucs 1979 playoff game recently. Doug Williams had a laser for an arm-not a rocket. He and John Elway probably the 2 hardest throwing QBs I have seen. The 1979 playoff great is also great for its short features on the Bucs’ Leroy Selmon, and Jane Kennedy and Irv Cross doing interviews. especially Irv CXross getting post-game interviews from Williams, Selmon, and Rickey Bell. During the game they comment on Williams’ low passing percentage, which was true, but I think hank Stram, or maybe Williams’ comment, noted that the McKay offense was run the ball and throw deep. Williams had faults as a QB, but what a great game and early vindication of his stellar talent. If you want to see that game it’s on a channel by Dave Volsky, and the video quality is the best, totally remastered.

    It’s unbelievable the way the Buccaneers treated Doug Williams. Doug took the losing Buccaneers a game away from the Super Bowl and the owner wouldn’t extend his contract. So happy for Doug’s success in Washington. His beautiful spirals are some of the best Super Bowl highlights.

    Life long Redskins fan and I never knew Gibbs had his hand in drafting Williams nor did I know he was a coach with the Bucs. I always thought he came to the Redskins straight from the chargers.
    Dungy is 100% correct, Gibbs did set things in motion for blacks to get those opportunities as QB and coaches. That is incredible. He has a bigger place in history than I ever knew.

    Joe Gibbs, who came from Air Coryell and Sid Gillman, was also OC for the stone-age offense of John McKay and the Bucs? I don’t know which story is more astounding? How on earth did Gibbs matriculate in mcKay’s near brain-dead offense? Kudos for Gibbs to reognize talent regardless of any other issues.
    also, incredibly powerful ending with Dungy.

      Thomm Xiong I don't know if you know about this but BLACK MEN were removed the NFL for 12 yrs '33-45 to allow White players to flourish. In '46 Black men were allowed back into the NFL before Jackie Robinson made his entry into MLB.

    Little bit dishonest here, Tampa wouldn't have drafted him in the first round if nobody else was interested.

      Idk. I remember in another documentary Doug said he told coach Robinson he wouldn't play in the NFL if he wasn't drafted high. Eddie Robinson knew all the NFL scouts and might have made a phone call to Tampa

    • @JAWrightonline
      @JAWrightonline Год назад

      Dishonest? Really? Williams was the 17th pick in the First Round of the 1978 Draft. Therefore, 16 teams passed him up. Guy Benjamin was the next QB taken with the 51st pick in the Second Round. The Pac-8 Player of the Year and Rose Bowl Winning QB (AND Game MVP) wasn't even drafted. A cat named Warren Moon.
      The NFL just wasn't drafting Black QBs back then. Definitely not in the First Round.
      The next Black QB to ever be drafted into the NFL came SEVEN years later. In the Second Round, Randall Cunningham.

    • @JAWrightonline
      @JAWrightonline Год назад

      @@ericmcgowan1993 Eddie Robinson didn't make a call to Tampa. John McKay was a progressive-minded head coach. He sent his assistant coach at the time, Joe Gibbs, down to Grambling to meet with Doug Williams.
      When Doug told Coach Robinson he would not play in the NFL if he wasn't drafted by Round Four, Robinson said, "Hell, cat. You go WHATEVER round they call you."
      About a decade earlier, James Harris was Grambling's All-American QB and promptly dropped to the EIGHTH ROUND. Depressed, he decided not to go to the Buffalo Bills. Robinson told Harris, "I know you can play in the NFL but the decision is yours. But remember, if you don't go, it's gonna be so much tougher on the next Black quarterback that gets drafted."
      James Harris was an eighth round draft pick. Three years later, Joe Gilliam was taken in the 11th round. Warren Moon was not drafted AT ALL. All these guys were First Round caliber talents: Harris led his team to division championships, led his conference in passer rating, and was a Pro Bowl MVP (back when the Pro Bowl was a legitimate game); Gilliam beat out Terry Bradshaw for the starting spot in 1974; Moon is in the Hall of Fame.
      The NFL wasn't stupid or blind. It was purely racism.

      @@JAWrightonline why would Tampa use a first round pick on a player nobody else wanted unless they knew they couldn't sign him otherwise? How do you know Eddie never called Tampa? I didn't say when Eddie made the call if he actually did. It could've been after McKay sent Gibbs to grambling. That would make more sense...
