  • To celebrate reaching the 1,000 subscriber milestone, my mom and I took a 2 hour drive to visit B & B Cactus Farm in Tucson, AZ. The last time I was here was nearly two years ago when I was on the cusp of a full blown cactus and succulent obsession. Now re-visiting the nursery with eyes that have been obsessing over these plants for two years, I am absolutely amazed and impressed all over again by the vast variety of plants that B & B has to offer and many at very affordable prices.
    B & B has a greenhouse dedicated to cactus, two greenhouses dedicated to succulents and caudiciforms, a large outdoor space with landscape plants, and a retail shop. I will attempt to walk as much of it as I can.
    BTW, all the plants that I purchased from B & B two years ago are still alive. I picked up a few more plants this trip which I plan to feature in a plant haul video in the near future.
    I kept losing track of time while I was recording and I tried to film a little slower, but as time went on and I felt rushed, the old moving-too-fast habit returned. I tried! At least I gave it a good shot in the beginning. I mean this did end up being my longest video to date.... I hope you enjoy this shopping trip with me!

    I appreciate that you took us along with you on this shopping trip to B & B. I will probably never get to experience seeing many of these plants in person. The large specimens in the greenhouse were spectacular. In order to purchase cacti here in central Florida we have to attend the yearly sales by the several cactus growers and their collections are nowhere near as extensive as those in Arizona and the plant are usually smaller. Thank you and congratulations.

      You have to come visit Arizona, Carolyn! (And bring a truck lol). B&B is such a lovely nursery. I would go more often if it were closer but it's probably better that it's just slightly too far away... otherwise...

      I agree! There are so many beautiful Notocactus/Parodia and they're very affordable and low maintenance - just lovely plants. I guess that's a good thing that they're underrated so that they can still be enjoyed without costing an arm and a leg!

    Wish they would have had nurseries like this when I lived there in the 70s! I'm bot sure if any cactus nurseries were around back then. Great place!!! Nice Euphorbias!!! Yes, I just learned recently that echinofossulocactus has Been put in with stenocactus. So yes they are the same, a synonym if you will. Thanks for sharing the tour!!! I would lose a lot of money there!! Hahaha!!! 🤣👍🌵 Great place!!! From Morris Park in the Ozarks, out to Arizona, have a great evening!!! Peace, Love, Plants!!!!✌️💖🌵🥀🌳🏵🌿🌸🌱🌷🌲🌹🌴🌾🌻🪴💐🍀😃👍

      Hello Clyde! I'm a huge fan! I've been watching your videos since I was new to cactus, back when Cookie's Cacti didn't exist. Gosh, I get so confused with the changing genus names, but as long as you know what I'm talking about then we're all good! These places tempt me so much, oh my gosh.... as I edit my videos and watch back I notice plants that I missed while I was there... I guess that means I'll just have to go back lol!

    Watching this on 724-24. Thinking how unfair life is that we don't have a cactus greenhouse like this in Virginia. On the other hand, i probably would be in the poorhouse if we did have one nearby. Instead of going to the nighclubs every weekend, i would be going to the greenhouse, if we had some with this marvelous selection. 😂

    Thank you Jenny for a lovely video, I really enjoyed this one. As you said it, B&B has much better selection of plants on offer than Bach's nursery - I could be persuaded to acquire some of the specimens 😄. One thing I find interesting is that there are no Astrophytum offered for sale (there is a possibility I overlooked them), especially since they appear to be extremely popular among collectors these days.
    Congratulations on your 1000th subscriber and best regards,

      I'm so glad you enjoyed this one, Nino! I'm very curious, which specimens caught your eye? You know, it also caught my attention that they have very few Astrophytum to offer. Bach's and Arizona Cactus Sales definitely had more Astros. I guess each nursery has a different emphasis, as we're seeing with these various nursery videos. There are two more nurseries in Tucson that I'd like to record at some point, each also offering their own flavor of plant inventory. It's fun to see how different each nursery is from each other.

I really like the pan shots showing the long greenhouse landscapes full of plants, the silhouettes of the mature plants in the back corners are just beautiful. It makes me want to go fuss over my small collection and get some more this spring. One of these days it's a goal to take a shopping trip to Arizona as the cactus nurseries seem like a cut above the norm in other states. It's also nice to see so many spiny cacti, succulents have pushed some of the availability off the benches in CA from what I've seen.

      @@cookiescacti HI! thanks I'm so enjoying the videos. I actually left the dumb comment about the succulents before I got halfway through the video, lol. I didn't mean to put succulents down as I like them too. These days I live in damp coastal OR but spent most of my life in central CA and remember during the 80's-90's cactus were a huge collector's thing and succulents were around to a lesser degree, now it seems like things have flipped. I still have a few spiny cactus, but other than one Mamm they don't get enough light to bloom. My succulent collection is doing much better and I must have about 40 outdoor, semi-outdoor, and houseplant types which I'm looking to expand on. I'd love nothing more than to take a long trip through the SW US someday and see a real cactus nursery again and pick up a few things that aren't in a 2" pot, esp in winter! -

      I grew up in Oregon! I still have family in the Portland area. It's funny, I sent my brother home with a Saguaro that grew from seed. It's really interesting to see how that seedling grows compared to the ones I have here. He's kept it alive though!

      In Phoenix the soft leaf succulents do terrible... unless they're kept indoors during the hottest part of summer. I learned the hard way. As soon as those overnight lows stay above 80-85F they just keel over and die (the other plants hate it too). I get jealous when I see folks in cooler parts of the country have those beautiful, colorful, soft leaf succulents thriving!

    • @cookiescacti
      @cookiescacti  10 месяцев назад

      A cephalium is the hairy/wooly/bristly growth on some cactus that flowers grow out of when plants are mature enough. The most identifiable one would be that "cap" that grows out of the top of mature Melocactus where flowers grow from.
