Plus, it won't be the first time that they've re-reacted to the same music video (ex: We Are the World). They even talk about Amber not having seen November Rain yet. Chill enough for you?

This and the next verse always stood out to me. Blue collar machinist who became pretty successful. got married , bought a house, 2yrs later in 2010 the bubble burst. We all went into debt keeping the doors open. The plan was for myself and the #2 guy to buy the shop. after 2 long years we came to the conclusion we couldn't. Now 8yrs later I'm still successful compared to many people I know. But I don't have that spark, my head isn't held high, i'm not really proud of of being a cog in someone else wheel...This second verse hits me hard.....

Estranged is my favorite narrative epic from GNR. It is so underrated and I am grateful you reacted to it. There is no resolution. Time and time again even the song structure focuses on the struggle and that is what being estranged is all about. Never getting an closer, never getting any resolution. It is just such a perfectly articulate song about the subject matter.

@@123Tarl They do have countless great songs, but Don't Cry, November Rain and Estranged are part of an intentional trilogy of music produced by GnR based on the short story "Without You" by Del James (which also has loose ties to Axl's only real life). These songs are meant to be taken in that context. They have the same director and have musical tie in such as drum fills and certain chord progressions.
      Summary:
Don't Cry talks about the problems in their relationship (and others in the band).
November Rain moves back in time and shows the wedding which takes place before Don't Cry. Then it flashed forward and shows his wife's death.

They were the greatest band on earth. Part of me is happy they didn’t continue with that dominance. I liken them to The Doors. In very short time, they made such a massive impact. They will always be one of the all time greats to me.

Was my first band T-shirt I ever bought and wore that thing almost every day with lots of pride! Yeah, massively important for me as an evolving teenager. And still fantastic today! So much better than today's mainstream "music". Although my absolute favourite song is not this, but Civil War. But this is also a masterpiece.

For those that don't know what this artistic trilogy means, let me try my best to explain (read until the end):
Don't Cry, November Rain & Estranged are part of an intentional trilogy of music produced by GnR. They are based on a short story called "Without You" by Del James (which also has loose ties to Axl's own real life). At the very end of Estranged, the lyrics "Without You" are actually specifically mentioned.
These songs are meant to be taken in that specific context. They have the same director for the videos and have musical tie ins such as drum fill ins and certain chord progression culminations.
    Summary:
Don't Cry talks about the problems in their relationship (and others in the band). Think of it as starting like Star Wars Episode IV A New Hope... Lucas started in the middle of the story instead of with Episode 1.
November Rain moves back in time and shows the wedding which takes place before Don't Cry. Then it flashed forward and shows his wife's death. So this is akin to the Star Wars Prequels and then flashes forward to the beginning of last Star Wars trilogy.
Estranged is how he deals with all of the emotions. Either you let life bring you down and succumb to the sorrow or you fight back and take control of your own life. This would be akin Star Wars Episode 9.
It's a masterpiece and Axl is a musical genius. Axl has a higher octave range than virtually every singer you've ever heard of from Mariah Carey to Freddie Mercury. Super talented individual.
    Cheers!

The Use Your Illusion albums (and the videos from them) were freakin' masterpieces from start to finish and this is one of the shining examples of why. I listened to this song about a million times when I was 13, way too young to understand the lyrics. Now that I'm an adult it hits so much harder and is still relatable.

I think this is Slash's most accomplished song technically. If you were to isolate his playing in the first section you'd hear that when the music goes quieter Slash is using controlled feedback from between his guitar and amp to create long undulating notes. It's a highly effective way to still have the guitar present in the quiet moments but without it overwhelming the vocals.
Later in the song, when the dolphins turn up on the video, Slash uses volume swells to create sounds like whale song on his guitar. Slash's guitar parts on this song range from very intricate solos to these very delicate playing techniques and they prove he's more than a brash riff peddler. In fact, Axl specifically thanks Slash for his contributions on this song in the album's sleeve notes.

I consider this more of a masterpiece than November Rain as it's a heavy piano based song for which Slash had to write a guitar track to go with it which was absolute killer and Axl gave Slash huge credit for doing so. For an even better song of theirs which is in my opinion their best and very underrated is a song called Coma which is their longest ever at over ten minutes. There is no video for this song but there are ones with lyrics which are deep as the song is based on a true event from Axl's life. It is EPIC.

If you want another really unique story song from GNR *please* listen to Coma! It's a masterpiece.
Civil War is also a great pick (epic), or Yesterdays (soft), or Live and Let Die (cover of McCartney's song)
Or a few more banging hard-rock songs from their debut album are Nightrain, Mr Brownstone, and My Michelle.

Estranged is the finale of the the whole GNR triology and a pristine masterpiece in rock'n roll history, up there with Stairways to Heaven, Like a Rolling Stone, Sultans of Swing, Another brink in the wall etc. Thats the league we talkin about here.

I knew the song long before I watched the video. That video is cool and has a ton of cool footage, but I feel the cry and emotion in that song, and will always love it. It's also a fantastic piece of music, beautifully arranged.

What a stunning song from the Illusions twin album set with 30 tracks between the 2 double album sets …. This is from the second half in blue. It’s a killer pair of albums but you will see there are a few tracks that could be missed or released on the B-sides…. Pretty Tied Up, You Could Be Mine which is used in the Terminator2 movie. Excellent album and powerful too !!!!

You guys should do their debut album, Appetite for Destruction, the follow-up EP Lies, and of course, everything from both Use Your Illusion albums.
I got to see them live with Metallica back in '92, and it was an incredible experience! I mean, it was more than just a "concert", it was an experience. I still have my t-shirts from that show. Come to think of it, I still have my ticket from it.

I will always remember that tour. I was just back after spending my first enlistment jumping on Panama, being in the Persian Gulf for almost a year eating sand and wondering if I would ever see home again. I had just finished my first tour after I reenlisted. I got back home just when they were to play the biggest stadium in the area to a sold out 60K plus crowd not counting who was outside just listening. I went there even though there was no chance of getting a ticket just to stand outside and listen to GNR and Metallica. A guy we ended up talking to noticed my ultra short military haircut and when he found out I had been back home less than two days after all of that he handed his ticket to me and told me that I needed this more than he did. I don't remember his name but I'll never forget his kindness. It is woven into the tapestry of that incredible show.

This song, "Don't Cry" and November Rain make up an unofficial trilogy from their double-album release in 1991. The videos were all three directed by the same guy. "Estranged" was the last of the three that was released as a single, but I like to put it in the middle so that "November" is the big finish. Would love to see Amber react to that one. Also, please check out "You Lost Me" by Christina Aguilera, especially her live performance on Late Night With David Letterman. Devastating!
