Interesting take on the style of game. I can definitely see the argument that it is not a trick taking game because no one is actually taking tricks. However, it has the feel of a trick taking game where there is a trump suit each bout and someone is going to essentially win the trick - even though they don't collect those cards up and keep them. Much like The Crew, there's the element of deciding how you want to land in that particular "trick" in order to achieve a desired result.
I appreciate this review....I was initially "out" on this game because of the "trick-taking" tag it had been given. This review helped me understand the game better...now I am very intrigued. Seems like a fun, shorter game -- and I really enjoy the Tidal Blades world.
I really liked the first one and I was on the fence with part 2. But I really like this one. The theme and setting of tidal blades with a different gameplay experience. And it is an easier game.
So if there are banners on a dock can other players still place banners on the dock? If so, it seems like necessary info is being covered by the banner tokens? Do you need to constantly look underneath them? Or am I wrong and it's a non issue?
The only time multiple players can place on the same dock space is during the same bout resolution (e.g., if you and an opponent both played a card that was in the middle and both would hit the same dock space, they do. In the future, that dock space is blocked until it clears at the end of the day)
It looks much more interesting than a trick taking game but yes definitely looks more like simultaneously selection…colors high low and middle seems very interesting
That was an interesting discussion about expectations. I'm not sure I understand this trend of branding games in a fictional "universe". Not only does it create expectations, it also creates confusion - rather than call this game "Banner Festival" which is unique, the words you see from a distance are "Tidal Blades" which is not unique. As soon as there are 3 or 4 of these, people will stop remembering what game does what. I'm sure there's a sales bump from such branding, assuming the flagship of the universe was well-liked, but seems like there are plenty of negatives. The art is beautiful and the board looks cool, but I have to say the theme is just plain weird. A festival in a fictitious world with slowly-moving jet skis and colored banners? Yeah, don't care. I also like multi-use cards, but I like some agency over which use I'm putting a card to. Sure it would feel great to activate the power on a high numbered card, but I imagine it also feels pretty lame when your card is put to some use you weren't hoping for. I think this one would be too much of a guessing game for me.
Well if you’ll recall the world of arzium has several different games. That make up the same fantasy world. Islebound Above and below Near and far Now or never City of iron Roam All of these games are different and yet they take place on the same world. Arzium
@@Animal_board_gamer Never played those. They at least don't do the title thing ("Azrium: City of Iron"). Though I do all the time hear reviewers tripping up on the names ("Now and never").
@@StevenStJohn-kj9eb yeah they also tend to forget that Islebound, city of iron and roam are part of arzium too, simply because they don’t have the same name trend the other 2 do. I hope the pre-orders will open soon, can't wait for this game :) Will The Dice Tower also do a playthrough video of this? I'd love that :)
Cant wait to get my copy of this game. Great overview of the game. ♥

When is the preorder?!?! I must know!!!
Preorder is cancelled, they can't get it to people earlier than retail. Just pre-order through your retailer.
This is the first I've heard of this game. I absolutely love tidal blades but I'm not sure about the mechanics for this one so far.
It seems strange to have a scored review without even a preorder date announced

I dunno, the only game so far I like from that company is Wonderland War. Everything else always seems a bit meh to me.
What else have you played.
