- I got laid off at the beginning of this year and it's been honestly a challenging season. I've been really procrastinating pushing out this video because I've been super focused on the job search, but I wanted to share my experience so far and I want to keep on sharing my experience with the interview process, the behavioral rounds, the technical rounds and everything in between.

This guy's words and mullet are so encouraging to watch.
Pwahahahaa I’m pinning this
I got a msg for a 1 on 1 with my mgr on my birthday. Didnt see it coming and my mgr advised my role was made redundant. Took the redundancy package and enrolled myself in a Master degree. never looked back and am much happier where i am now. So, one door closes another will open. stay strong!
what's your income while doing a Master degree?
@@GameFuMaster Decided to study full time so no income. I used part of my severance package to do the Master degree.
what was the role? was it made redundant industry-wide? kudos on you for bouncing back so strong and enrolling for a masters
I got laid off from a non-data job last year, I used my severance as a source of confidence to focus solely on study and portfolio projects for next 2 months (although Ived been dabbling on data tools before the lay off). I got so many rejections when I began applying as a career shifter. Heartbreaking. Eventually I got an offer and now Im a data analyst.
Keep pushing. For everyone who is trying to shift, keep learning but most importantly apply your learning to a personal project with shareable link from your resume. And also, improve the structure of your resume put Skills section on top of 1st page and maintain maximum of 2 pages.
Great advice.
You sound like a robot. Maybe that's a good thing!
never give up lol I was a data analyst with 5 YoE and job hunting from July 2023-Dec
Sent over 4k apps, did over 74 interviews but got 2 offers
Its def doable
"never give up" = never question the rat race, just accept it. By all means if you think its not a rat race then thats fine, but how many can question it when people mindlessly cram their throats with "never give up". That's equivalent to saying don't question it. There are a ton of videos like this of people suffering, and if they at least questioned whether it was worth it or not, maybe they could find another way of making a livelihood. There are other ways if you are prepared to think outside the box. At such a young age, few have the courage to do anything other than what their felllow suffering friends are doing. Pity.
@@user-ml2xh1jg1s a man got to it, hard to fight the rat race when if you don't run you get crushed under
Thank you, Justin. This is helping a lot. Stay encouraged, man. We are in this job search season together. It's really hard and it takes a toll on my mental health. Being rejected again and again is hard, especially when you think you've been doing great at the university and also in your job. But for a reason, it seems there are only rejections for now... Be blessed, Justin.
So sorry to hear it's been a tough season. Rooting for you-excited to see where you land next!
I stumbled upon your channel recently and found it really interesting, both in terms of its cinematic quality and the knowledge it provides. Keep up the good work, bro. I recently got laid off from a position that was not relevant to data, but I wanted to send you a virtual hug.
Great video Justin. Very eye opening to what's happening with people affected by the mass tech layoffs. I really hope you find a great job soon
great video. this layoff cycle was vicious, but new & better opportunities await! thanks for sharing
Its all good brother! I wish you the best of luck and will pray for you! I just recently left my job too and am in the inbetween state.
For those sharing a similar journey, stay strong and stay positive. Nothing is forever. This advice is priceless: resume, network, alumni, interview prepping, positivity.
I have been working in a government job for the past 15 years, we have a generous pension, a matching 401k with over half a million dollars invested and we get great Benefits medical dental vision etc etc. The best part is the STABILITY it provides me and my family I never have to worry about getting laid off I have about 10 more years for a total of 25 years of service! Very blessed.
Also, very smart of you to seize the opportunity working in government. A lot of people shun government jobs, but it’s clear now that they provide decent salaries, pensions and medical benefits. Now people try to get a government job and it’s much harder now.
Thank you for sharing about your journey! I agree the best thing to do is not panic. It’s great that they provided you with severance and unemployment options. Your advice is really solid! Networking as well as cold applying works depending on the role. Referrals definitely make the process move faster. Hang in there!
Solid advice on leveraging your network and taking time to recharge during a tough job market. Navigating through these cycles with patience and persistence can make all the difference. 🌟
Cold apply really works!! Referral got me 1 interview but I heard back from a few firms through cold apply! (applied for hundreds tho
After watching your video for the first time, I must say that you have an exceptional talent for film making and content creation, alongside your impressive tech skills. Great job!
Thank you for sharing your journey & keep your head up! This season in the valley is preparing you for an upcoming WIN! ;-)
Sending love your way man. Really have loved your videos about data and enjoyed seeing your life through the process (and will continue to do so). Stay strong, you'll shake back!
Thanks Taka!
Being aware that your job is a part (more or less important) of your personal identity... that alone is a very important step backwards... well done!
Courage for this complicated moment, but one that will make you stronger! Your videos are top quality, I'm sure you're going to find a great job!
"Il n'est pas nécessaire d'espérer pour entreprendre, ni de réussir pour persévérer." Guillaume d'Orange.
Keep going brother. Dont give up.
Thank you for opening up and talking about such a commonly "issue" these days especially in our generation. Rooting for you!
Thanks Syd! Thanks for watching my videos!
Im glad this came up on the algorithm! Been deciding if I wanted to be a Data Analyst.. how do you like the career? Pros/cons? GL on the job hunt bro!!
Sorry to hear that you got laid off, but I'm glad you're pulling through it. Getting laid off is a terrible feeling. Good luck my man.
Such a brave behavior. It is not easy to share an unemployment. Congrats on your bravery. Hope you will get another good job
welcome to the club brohter
I have been unemployed for 1 year :V with excellent bachelor certificate.
Don't be embarrassed bro. I know it's easier said than done, but keep your head up
All the best, one day this phase will just be a distant memory!! Your trip with friends footage looked so dope. Where did you guys go?
Oahu, Hawaii!
Thanks for the sharing. It's important to show the reality. It's kind of funny because that data jobs are describe as having more demands than applications and need more people (at least in France) but the true market is definitely different. And even for qualify and experimented worker as you. Good luck, I have no doubt you will find an opportunity.
First of all... Thankyou just Thankyou for sharing man.
I have just recently completed a year working as a Business Analyst(WFH) and I now want to switch to a better company and I am really nervous abt it...This video really helped me👍
Just retired 40 years as an IT BA. The first thing I did at a new job/client was get an org chart and study it. Also read all I could on the company. Also did information interviews to meet people, show initiative. I've worked in 17 industries and many companies. One favourite opener was "how did you get here? Tell me about your career". People love to talk about themselves and I enjoyed their stories. Always stay curious, treat everyone with respect and always assume you have more to learn. Be humble! I loved my work and (most of) my clients.
@@njcanuck Thankyou for sharing your Legacy sir. Hope to retire someday like you at the same time loving what I do.👍
So many people in data getting laid off
Man I feel this, getting laid off is hard on anyone
I got laid off from my first degree related job after 3 months, my former employer wanted to hire someone who did more work for the same amount of pay
Tech companies are relentless, but that's just how it is?
For me, I applied for 15-25 jobs nearly everyday. Lots of non responses, rejection emails, in person interviews with no good. I am happy to say I finally got into a fairly better position with another tech company last month. It was a direct call from a past interview, they just straight up said, "we have an opening, wanna come work for us."
It's okay to rest, and the best thing we can do for ourselves to continue to apply
Hope the job market over there is getting better.
Justin, stay strong, I was laid off a few times too, it's always tough, you are young and clever and well qualified, continue searching for work, you will find 1 that suits you
Aww this is so kind. Thank you Joe!
Thank you
Don’t give up! I am going through the same …but in worse conditions .. so there are more of us going through the same !
nice to see 80's mullet is back in style.
Good job. I've been working since 1997. I went through 4 layoffs and never give up. My advice to young people, make sure you save save and save. Do not go into more debt especially more schooling unless you plan to switch your career.
Just retired as an IT business analyst 40 years (let go, ironically). Also have accounting designation. Been there MANY times. In last 6 years I was out of work for 2 years! Retrained as security guard and took in a roommate to keep the money coming in with flexible daytime schedule for interviews/networking. Found perm job just before C*vd. Have you reached out to IT placement companies? Also, your network is key! Honestly, I think AI will take over alot of data analysis and accounting. Keep looking in your field but think also about related work so you can leverage your education/ experience. Get outside every day. Find cheap things to do. Don't stop living! Spend 1/2 day doing targeted work search then go do something else. For your sanity!!
In job search period, try to learn new job related skills to make your toolkit bigger.
You are right that things go in cycles, but the future is changing faster and faster, many computer related jobs will disappear with automation/AI.
So it is important that everyone who works in this industry constantly develops and learns new things that move them up on the list to the employers.
Or even better, give you the skills to start your own business.
Your jobs are coming to banana republics like Costa Rica and similar. I just had a meeting for a role at Amazon AWS and the hiring manager told me that they were opening the roles that they closed in New York.
When i was trying to pivot into data analytics last year, it was actually your channel that kept me going when I wanted to give up. I want to thank you for the videos you make because even though you don't know me, they've helped changed my life around. Sorry about the lay off! I know it sucks but God's timing is perfect, and i have faith you are exactly where you need to be in life. Praying for many blessings to come your way brother 🙏🏿
Ayy Gods timing is perfect! Thanks for sharing this 🙌
Everyday I regret more and more teaching myself data analytics. I'm not getting hired at all 💀💀. Months wasted.
Hard times create strong men
One day you will look back and see how this made you stronger.
Take care brother!
Totally agree!
Hi , do you think that I can become a data analyst with my MBA in data analytics? Or even become a data scientist with that ?
Sorry to hear that you got laid off. I am a data analyst in CAli working for small company. I see lots of tech companies lay off. Why not try working for small company, thats what I do. I am the only one data analyst and there is no one to lay off. Some time working for big fancy company is very risky.
Hey Justin, really touching video, feel free to reach out if I can help in anyway, I work for a large US company and have quite a few connections. Hope you find a new role very soon. Take care
Layoffs are one thing but some Companies are playing dirty… looking at any reason to fire a person to try to save on Unemployment Insurance.
Hello! I've been studying and taking courses to get into data science. Is it still worth it to get into data field despite the massive tech layoffs? All of this news is discouraging me.
It’s going to be very hard to find a job right now but if you have the patience and resources to wait through it I don’t discourage it.
Either don’t be embarrassed. I had the same happen in 2022. Keep your head up and keep grinding!!
Thank you for sharing and wish you a miracleous start over. I didn't get the reason for this laying off situation. You didn't mention it or i didn't notice?
Business restructuring!
@@justinshin 🥺 is it hard to find new job positions in data analytics? I'm considering getting a master in business data analytics and immigrate at the same time. I'll appreciate any valueable advice from you🙏🏻
This too shall pass, insha'allah, Justin!
What camera and editing software do you use? Love the quality of your work.
Fx3 and Davinci resolve
Nothing to be ashamed off man.. This happens to all of us at some point in time.. I'm just really concerned about Tech jobs from now on.. With automation increasing, I only see getting worse from here.. Where is tech jobs 5 years from now? 10 years?
We should be aware that we are simply cells with names in Excel for employers. Went this times when we can got 1 education and work on 1 job until pension. Now we should learn all of life. Live and learn forever.
was confident I would easily find another job, but probably not in this economy
BRO i just finished your "a day as a data analyst" and then this video 🤣🤣😥😥😥😥
Gbu & Amitofu ---- Over population and over supply. Some may not agreed but that is a fact. Be resilient, don't give up, it's a temporary.
Funny thing is I see engineers getting fired but Business Analysts, and other paper pushers are surviving this. 😂
Help me I wanna be data analyst too, I have Bachalors in economics
Everyone should be happy with more layoffs. It reduces the carbon footprint
I was also laid off last week
Oh man, sorry to hear that. Hang in there bro!
Best of luck. What I will say outside of this is these type of videos are becoming rampant (e.g. “I quit X salary tech jobs weirdflex, laid off tech job, can’t find tech job as a new grad, tech is dying doomerism gatekeeping”). The first and last are pretty annoying.
Hey. I remember your RUclips videos. Didn’t you get hired during the Pandemic? You were fresh out of school or something. I think you’re in Chicago.
I feel it. Laid off as Data Engineer in Jan. Still hunting, interviewing. When I finally get interviews, I miss by small margins.
Sucks but we WILL come back hard.
Enlist
So the whole "learn to code" phrase has become obsolete guess we can't rely on that now!
Take a look at the parts of IT that have been stable and in fact, are understaffed like Cyber Security. Your still might fit in.
layoffs and tough market job fck it
2:19 got laid off... went to Hawaii. LOL dude you're living the dream
😂😂😂
You can't blame what's happening because of how easy it was to get a tech job. All you need is a bootcamp cert.
yes! you will have soon
At least you got some sort of laid
AI is going to take the data analyst job, even data scientists that are not programmers are going to lose their jobs. Dont stay looking for data roles, AI is coming for it, have a plan B dude.
Ai is a tool that will help data analyst, unless your a data analyst you don’t understand how Ai would help analyst. Ai is coming for everyone especially the repetitive tasks
@@EVILUNITEZ Which means if the heavy lifting is done by AI there wont be need to keep data scientists full time or at least with their salary.
not ur fault ofc, but surely AI will be the number 1 DA of the near future?.
Seek a government job, federal, state and local. They’re usually more stable with benefits. Getting laid off sucks. Private sector is not good for a career longevity.
Hey man I am gay too. You should come out.
Hahaha I’m happily married to my loving wife 😎
I am noticing that all the people who are making these laid off videos are young and Asian. Is there anything there?
No. It’s all kinds of people going through similar situations.
These tech jobs are saturated by Asians, it's hard for any other demographic to get in this field unless you know people of the same race.
Thank Joe Biden, this job market is atrocious
