- Exploring in Withlacoochee State Forest near the Withlacoochee River and taking in the nature and history along the way. So many places to roam throughout the forest and lots of scenery with some interesting layers of history as well. In this area of the forest was once an old town, several of them actually and a nearby railroad linked the communities together during the 1800's and early 1900's. Today some of the railroad is part of the hiking trails here and you can get a sense of the past by exploring out here. The railroad was built up above the surrounding swamps where much of the old growth Cypress trees were logged out during the old days. The railroad was utilized for industry and transportation. Logging, turpentine and various phosphate mining are some of the industries in the area and the towns boomed during those days. Once the resources were used up in these places many of the communities were abandoned and only traces from the past remain today. Before the railroad came through here people crossed the river by Ferry. Some of the towns here were known as Croom and Oriole. You can hike parts of the Florida National Scenic Trail here along with forest roads and multi-use trails as well. The area has camping and is popular for boating and fishing near as well. The area is located within the Croom Tract of the forest and is just one of the many sections you can explore. I enjoy exploring throughout the forest here it's nice to look at some of the old Cypress trees that still remain and experience the views of the river. So let's take a journey into the wilds of Florida and take a step back into the past as we journey into old Florida. Thank you and enjoy the adventures!

Always a great trip with you Thank you
Used to ride my dirt bike in Croom and across the river where Pemberton used to be back in the early 70’s. The railroad and the wooden trestle across the river were still intact at that time although not in use. The north-south ACL line between Owensboro junction and Dunnellon that ran alongside the Croom motorcycle area was still quite active though.
Yeah man I enjoy your videos. They’re very relaxing I always like to go and do the same thing myself but I’m a little older now.
Another great video! Really appreciate that you find and include the old historical photographs!
