Ok so Sade is actually the name of the Band. It's derived from her middle name, Folasade. Her full name is Helen Folasade Adu , Sade sounds better 😉. She is born in Nigeria but raised in London. This is her style music, & she's probably responsible for about half of the children conceived in the 80s and 90s (baby making music) This video is actually part of a 3 story arc (the word Temor ,on the window is in 2 other videos, with the same man) shes now in her 60s but looks exactly like she does here , its insane. This is off her 1st album Diamond Life (if not mistaken)

Sade is my favorite (and possibly the best) active band today. And the fact that they've been at it since the early 80s just blows me away. Without Sade, the world would not know the genre of "sophistipop." Paul Spencer Denman (bassist) is a wizard at making the simplest basslines engulfingly rich.
Her songs are always so amazing, it always does my heart good to know that there are such BEAUTIFUL musical notes inside people. I think this kind of track could EASILY be released today.. to a hungry audience that wants something real. Music today is so overly produced and mechanical. It's also amazing that a woman as petite as Sade can have such a strong, powerful voice with such range. Love it.
100% you should do "like a tattoo", first time I heard it I thought it was another beautiful love song, but then I was pretty shocked to learn it was actually a song about PTSD written by Sade Adu herself, she's amazing.

Side note: Sade is Nigerian/British and briefly moved to Jamaica and stayed in the U.S. for a while but is British and lives in England now, I think. Always a vibe, always distinctly SADE, always a groove. She is just in her own lane, timeless, quality music. My favourite Sade song. It's touching and heartbreaking. Impossible not to be moved by the depth of the emotion. She is fabulous and the band is top notch too.
I still remember the first time I heard a Sade song. It was 1984, and it was so different than all the new wave and synthpop prevalent at the time. Don't get me wrong, I was a teenager and loved synthpop the same all my other friends but Sade was a classy breath of fresh air. These days her style is referred to as Sophisti-Pop. But no matter the genre, the 80s was an amazing era for music, and bands like Sade helped make it so.
Sade is in a class all their own. They have no competition because nobody else can do what they do. They've taken 10 year breaks between their last few albums. You're simply not going to find a bad Sade song. I'd suggest "Your Love is King", "Sweetest Taboo", or "No Ordinary Love" for your next reaction. I loved your reaction, and so loved your surprise at how this musical piece would sound,..yes the 80's had a lot of innovation, with techno, electronic, New Wave, yeah 80's is the home of Flock of Seagulls, Devo, The Buggles, Ultravox..but the innovation wasn't always like brand, brand new, some groups went back to basics, big band of the 1940's, just using it in a new way, with reggae too, Madness, Spandau Ballet, Dexy's Midnight Runners, UB40, Culture Club, and they also incorporated elements of jazz, Simply Red, Bryan Ferry, Sade`, or very, very close to jazz,..jazz was still king, some groups had their own, some used artists established jazz players like David Sanborn, the Yellow Jackets(huh, do check out Four Corners alnum, Indigo is my fav, they have a fantastic saxophonist), when Sade` hit the scene, first impressions of I guess critics was torch song singer, you know like, Lady Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughn(who was still alive when I came along, as a kid on Ed Sullivan Show, Johnny Csrson, incredible singer, and I read in her bio, a voice few humans, if not no human on the planet, at the time could reach I think the octaves she could, do check her out, she was extraordinary), and don't get me started on Lady Ella Fitzgerald, so glad you checked Sade` out, do keep going, Punch Drunk(instrumental, superb, quintessential jazz, straight up), Maureen(so love that song, reminds me of me and my friend Rip), ...enjoy, do enjoy,..Godspeed, Peace ✌
What a great analysis. And I agree. This song could not come out today without brutal criticism of romanticizing abuse. Lana Del Rey has a song called ultra violence that came out around 2014-2015, also delving into toxic love and she was highly criticized for “romanticizing abuse” rather than just taking the song for what it is… a reality for many people.
Is it a crime? Yes indeed it is a crime that this song wasn't a bigger success. I think probably because the song was too mature for American and British pop songs at the time. The lead single Sweetest Taboo was a top 5 single in the US, and deservedly so. If Adele were to do a cover of "Crime" I bet it would do exceptionally well. The song suggestions from other commenters for Sade are great. But my favorite of Sade's that I recommend is "I Never Thought I'd See The Day". It wasn't a released song. Though to my surprise (and I flipped out when I heard it) it was used as background mood music in the movie True Lies. During the scene that Jamie Lee Curtis' character did a seductive strip-tease dance in the dark for Arnold Schwarzenegger's character. It was sexy and brilliantly comedic. I recommend the movie too.

As a pop/soul/jazz music fan who grew up in the 80s and 90s who loves real singers and bands, two UK artistes standout for me and hold their own with the best America had to offer: Sade and Amy Winehouse. Unfortunately, in my opinion, the industry has been on a steady decline since the mid 2000s.
Skip that one. It was lip synced. Just how things were done at those big events back then. I'm partial to the Lovers Live performance. The 2011 and Live from San Diego shows are great too.
