Concubine Wen's family blackmailed the Xu family into taking her as a concubine. As for Lianfang his mother guilted him into marrying her because she knew it was the only way he would marry her. His mother did a lot of questionable things in the name of protecting the Xu family.

@@alwiyaqudsi520 it created a whirlwind of problems in that family. lol His late wife was obsessed with gaining power and influence for her son/maiden family. Every concubine had issues. Shiyi was the only wife that wasn't scheming or trying to gain his favor. She was selfless. When his concubines started dropping like flies and he refused having more concubines...his household was finally at peace.

@@user-zz6ov2dr7d 其實侯爺有說過，十一娘才是當家主母，言外之意，似乎也在指責十一娘並未用心在自己應盡的本分之上，不過十一娘回他說：誰來管不重要，重要的是有沒有管好！這句話也等於反擊侯爺，只要喬姨娘能管好，她不介意！十一娘並不是不爭，而是有原則的！只是喬姨娘當家不僅不公正，還自己犯錯擅自拿了主母的蜀錦份例，加上霉米事件，在在顯示喬姨娘管不好，十一娘接下當家職責，不僅能夠做好份內工作，還能處處幫著侯爺，甚至大大改善了侯爺和五爺以及諄哥的關係，甚至兩人有時候一個眼神就知道對方的心意，對十一娘來說，除了剛入侯府的漫不經心，之後則是處處以侯爺的立場為考量，以徐家的利益為優先，才慢慢進了侯爺的心裡！其實夫妻之間相處也差不多都是這樣，很多妻子都能似十一娘一般辛苦操持家務，只是侯爺多情不濫情、處事公正精明、能夠看到妻子的付出而且心懷感激，對於妻子更是多方支持、用命來保護，但這樣的丈夫好像只有書上或是戲劇裡才有！所以侯爺才會迷倒這麼多女子！

In this drama, I see the son first as a victim of his mother's politics, then as a hero for his wife.
I knew that he was going to start standing up to his mother when he finally fell in love with Shiyi. She left an impression on him earlier on even before his wife died. I think that was his mother's biggest fear is that she was going to lose control of him especially once he started defending Shiyi. When he started objecting to her arbitrary for her it signaled the beginning of the end for her. She overplayed her hand when she used Dongqing life as a bargaining chip to control Shiyi. He was done with her foolishness from then on. I would've cancelled her a long time ago especially after she tried hard to clear Lianfang of any wrongdoing in the case involving his son. She proved that she wasn't fit to lead the family.

She doesn't try to gain favor or power. She isn't interested in using his status to enrich her family's interests. It's everything that he's always wanted.
