This one has grown on me over the years. At the time, I thought it was slow and tame compared to Goldeneye and TND, but now I appreciate its depth - and it's Brosnan's best performance in the role.

This was the first Bond movie I saw. My dad took me to the theater's to see this movie. Instantly hooked and been a Bond fan since. Even though he played Bond for 4 movies and two of them weren't the greatest, Brosnan is still my favorite Bond and TWINE is my favorite to this day. Great review Joe!
I believe mine was Tomorrow Never Dies at age 10. so exciting! I obviously watched the Bond Movies before, I was a huge Bond fan and I havent missed a single movie in theatres since then.
I saw a video once discussing the height of each Bond actor. Sean Connery was the tallest and each actor through the years has been shorter than the one before them.
This is the wimpiest portrayal of Bond, ever. The way he falls for Elektra is pathetic. I have known suburban school girls who have more grit than Brosnan in The World is Not Enough.
@@ricardocantoral7672 Every portrayal of Bond by Brosnan is the wimpiest portrayal of Bond ever. As a 13 year old growing up in 1999 this was my first Bond film. It’s admittedly not the greatest Bond film (certainly better than what came next) but I absolutely love it and consider it Brosnan’s best.
My strongest memory of seeing this in the theater back in 1999, is that the entire audience burst out laughing as soon as Denise Richards showed up. And I just can't bring myself to believe that that was the filmmakers' intention...
Wonderful opening sequence. Many reviewers and even fans savaged Brosnan after this was released for trying to make Bond more human. Ironic in the age of Craig. He wanted the next movie to be a serious retooling of "Casino Royale." The producers wanted the overblown 40th anniversary tribute that became Die Another Day. "Casino Royale" was originally written for Brosnan.
Sophie Marceau takes this movie up a whole level or two. She’s just perfect as Electra, I cannot imagine anyone doing this role better. Maybe that’s why everyone notice Denise Richards to be such a failure in this movie because in comparison to Sophie no one stands a chance
Your right - one of the first tv shows in the UK to feature what we would now call "Reality TV", at least they skipped the cameo by Maureen from Driving School!
I wasn't sure that Americans would get that bit of schadenfreude (traffic wardens are called something else in the US and dress more like policemen, and I'm not sure if they are disliked as much as they are here - this part was actually cheered in the cinema when I watched it) but it was good to see the guys got it!
I actually found the moment where Q lowers back into his lab to be a sweet, poetic ending for Desmond’s run as Q. He gives Bond advice (acknowledging that he’s told him this in the past), and then has an “escape plan” himself by lowering into the ground. It’s sort of a surprising choice considering they had no idea he’d die in a car crash in the following months. RIP Desmond.
TWINE is fine, really! Much better than TND, I think. But... I don't know why I don't wanna watch this film too often either... Last time was ca. 7 years ago? Same thing with FYEO. That is fine film too... The films like TSWLM, TLD and of course GE I watch every month at least! *** You guys did great review as always! I agree with most of your arguments. Denise Richards is a little weak, but her character is badly written too. The finale in the submarine is OK., better than Carver's ship stuff in previous film. What I really like is the boat chase in the beginning, Q scene and his final words/disappearing, Elektra King as the only female main villain of the franchise, Valentin Zukovsky saves Bond, Bond kills Elektra. So, plenty of good stuff. I wanna watch it now!!!
you guys nailed my thoughts exactly on this film. It's good, it could have been great. Halfway through the film it kind of veers off. They wanted to have Bond fall in love with Elektra, but they really revealed her as the villain too early. Too many video-game style action sequences, Richards terribly miscast. Bond killing Elektra should have been the climax of the film, but then there's another boring 10 minutes in the submarine. And then after a film that should have had some emotional impact there's Bond romancing Christmas in the last scene.
It's like most Bond movies. The films could be really good with some interesting ideas and really good set pieces and villains. Then they sabotage their own movie normally in the second half with bad comedy ideas or the script trying to stick to the formula too much and the movie's become patchy between really good memorable scenes and then let down badly in others. That's the frustrating thing about them. They could be really good movies with more care.
It's the best opening to any Bond film in my opinion. Hits a lot of high notes and it's obviously really exciting. The film overall is a return to form after TND too. Glad I got to watch it in the cinema at the time, a good way to close out the century.
I just want to give a shout out to Scott for his always keen insight but also for the head's up on the re-released expanded TWINE score. My copy arrived a couple of days ago. It truly re-frames the score and is reminder of its significance.
@@thedarkknightman6150 I wanted to like it. I love pierce brosnan, I don't think it's bad by any stretch, but I'd rather watch goldeneye or the world is not enough instead. Like these guys say Bond is like pizza and sex, even when its bad its good
Cigar Girl was outside the MI6 building because she was running the transmitter which activated King's lapel pin, which in turn activiated the uranium ore which caused the explosion. It's in the novelization, as Tanner explains. Those first few lines were cut, so his next lines were played over an establishing shot of the castle.
I'm glad to see a lot of fans are coming around to this one as this is my personal favorite. I was kind of surprised at the amount of hate it's gotten over the years, with people essentially saying Richards completely sinks the film. Thanks for reviewing!
I always took it that the Cigar Girl was outside the building just to see if the attack was a success. Some attacks have an observer and I took it that was the reason she was there.
I really enjoy this Bond adventure. I always noticed in the boat chase in the pre-titles that when Bond fires the torpedoes towards the end of the chase that the there is a weird continuity error. He fires the first torpedo and the film cuts into a close up before the second torpedo fires and the wrong torpedo fires, its backwards. Bond fires the top one and when it cuts in close and the bottom one has been fired and he fires the top one again. Little detail noticed only because I have watched this one so much, doesn't take away from the enjoyment one little bit.
Brosnans best performance as 007 for sure with one of the absolute best pre titles of the series! Weak action in the film overall though-agree with you Joe-that skiing scene is definitely the blandest skiing sequence of the series with Brosnan clearly nowhere in sight! The story is great,however-rich and deep-I especially love Elektra, who is a fantastic Bond girl/villian and easily the best character in the movie. And Scott-I love Cigar girl/Tony Sopranos imaginary neighbor too!!👌🏻
Niels Christiansen It is-it’s mostly that ski chase and the ending that seems to lack punch to me somehow. Joe and Scott were right-the script built up Renard so well as this powerhouse villian who feels no pain that I guess I was hoping for this big epic challenge for Bond and a real classic showdown at the finale... But instead got a pretty standard 007/Bad guy fight....
Regarding Brosnan "nailing it" it TWINE, I'd say that this holds true for the actors who played Bond in multiple films (more than two). Goldfinger, TSWLM, TWINE, & Skyfall are all examples of these actors coming to a comfort level in defining the role as their own.
I really loved this film. Other than Denise I can’t really hate it that much. I think they do a lot right and took some different turns. I think it’s very underrated.
What a day, I have a new video from my favourite Bond reviewers and the latest issue from Empire was waiting for me when I got home from work, with a free Bond special magazine enclosed! I really must give TWINE another go, as I really dont care for it, I think it's less than the sum of its parts.
Brosnans second Best Bondmovie. Great performance by Brosnans, David Arnolds Best score, a great plot by Wade and Purvis, great casting, great song, original action Scenes, memorable villains. Denise Richards is good and she does well with what little Wade and Purvis gave her. The climax ombord the submarine is a tad too long but in everything other aspekt this movie succeeds very well. A major improvement over Tomorrow Never Dies and there are no invisible cars anywhere.
People used to say The World Is Not Enough is not good and then when I watched it I was like they did some interesting things with the movie which they could have built upon with Brosnan. First of all there is an element raw anger and viciousness to Brosnan which automatically makes it his best performance, Sophie Marceau was amazing as Elecktra and as the only female villain to date, loved the score and the action setpieces for most part. Denise Richards was outlandish and hard to believe but to me she did not have a significant role which I am glad with
41:21 the difference between american and british humour. Q referring to the speedboat as his future fishing boat is irony and british humour that most people in the uk would get that its not meant literally
> Another solid review. Thanks. Cheers & see you at the NTTD premiere ! 😉 ( I hope not kicking and screaming when it doesn't match our high expectations. Something tells me they are going to seriously "blow up" some Fleming-constructed Mythologies in order to hint to future buyers of the 007 Franchise that this storyline is "malleable" or "flexable" to meet the Victimhood Cult of the 2020s. )
Good review of a decent Bond film. Brosnan's best performance and a truly lovely Sophie Marceau within a solid film. But James Bond should be more thrilling than this, that's why he is James Bond.
Great review, gentlemen. If not for a few errors and Denise Richards unfortunate casting, this could have been one of the greats - or at least Brosnan's best. I agree with the misuse of Renard (what a wasted opportunity) and especially Scott's apropos praise of Maria Grazia Cucinotta (I loved his pronunciation of her name). Definitely one of the most umm, dynamic? Bond ladies of all time. Oh, and Sophie Marceau is pretty fabulous too. Sorry, Americans tend to mess things up when it comes to Bond. Appreciate the review and can't wait for the next one on a certain stinker we all know and loathe.
I agree the start of this movie is freaking awesome, up until the opening credits I am totally immersed and loving it. Its over the top in some parts yes but boy, it is so bloody entertaining. The score by David Arnold in the early parts of this film are superb, perfect in fact. Ps I had a good laugh at the recreation you guys did at the end, poor Scott haha. Keep them coming guys.
I actually like this one the best of the Brosnan films. For some reason every time I revisit goldeneye it becomes more average. Most millennials i talk to only regard goldeneye so highly because of nostalgia for the video game.
THANK YOU ! Goldeneye is overrated and despite it's self aware commentary regarding the franchise and the world changing after the end of the cold war, it ultimately stuck to the conventions established by the previous films. Tomorrow Never Dies truly brought Bond into a new age by recognizing the destructive nature of corporate media.
8:21 to me this is David Arnold at his peak in terms of classical James Bond, he would have a different peak with Casino Royale but this one was his peak
Finally catching up to these. Just read Purvis & Wade’s original script which opens in Havana instead of Bilbao, which is Bond gives Moneypenny a cigar. He chases Cigar Girl with a jet pack. Christmas in French Polynesian with short black hair in her 30’s. No M abduction. The rest is pretty close to the final product.
I like this movie for what it meant to be. The plot is nice, Elektra wants to be the queen of an oil monopoly. The stockholm syndrome brings the right dose of "dark and gritty". And Bond gets his feelings really messed with Elektra. Or at least it should be. But the execution is away over the top. It seems like there's a need to write big action scenes, when things could've been taken in a smaller and intimate scale.
To start, I've loved this series. Haven't had time to comment. I've agreed and disagreed with both of you over time. I know that this film gets bashed, largely due to Denise Richards, but it's one of my go-to Bond films. Pierce is great, Electra is a great villain. The pre-credits is one of the best. They really tried to do something different here, but fell short. I don't like the ski scene or the helicopter bit. Take those out, focus even more on character development and this would be a gem. (And no Denise Richards)
*VIDEO IDEA* Hey Hos and Scott! Been listening since 2006/2007!! (I tied with 'BlackBond' in the Being James Bond Contest back in 2008 - remember skiing in the Lazenby tux? Haha) So here's a video idea: I love how you guys review the films (going back to the start) and when you review the theme songs (love to hear Scott's reaction to NDTD). Always perk up when Scott mentions the soundtracks. Maybe do an episode(s) where you both talk about the film scores and review them! The highs and lows and Scott's knowledge of the album releases to cap each film. Live Like Bond! MM
Good review!! I actually agree with some of Joe's complaints for once, hahaha. I'm shocked he rated this movie so high considering his rationale for ranking other Bond movies but... it's Joe, Captain Inconsistent ::shoulder shrug:: ha ;-) ... I will go against his suggestion of casting Carrie-Ann Moss though!! That would have been a terrible idea!!! The Matrix had JUST come out earlier that year and THE WORLD was too focused on her being "Trinity from the Matrix" to believe she was now this super sexy Bond Girl level sex symbol. Yea she's attractive but that would have been a disastrous move and EON would have been crucified for it. TWINE would have probably been rated lower that it already is had that happened. Denise Richards was a great choice! As mentioned she was on fire at the time and she looks like a typical Bond Girl (reminds me of Barbra Bach from TSWLM.. not in acting quality but in looks, lol). The main problem with Denise was she was a VERY poorly written character but that's not her fault. I don't know why people keep forgetting how the 90s actually was and what all was going on, lol. It seems that's why Brosnan's films get so much hate because people forgot the social climate of the 90s (or weren't even alive at the time) and compare them to what's going on currently as though these movies aren't 18-25 years old, lol .... Anyway, haha, I agree with Scott though 8/10 and still one of my top level Bond movies.
Boy am I relieved! I thought I was walking into Lockerbie but that was much kinder than expected. I love this film and it's a shame Joe can't get into the spirit of it. (Of course Q has an OP as fuck death machine fishing boat - that's the joke!) The ambiguity of how much Renard tortured Elektra and who turned whom and when they turned, is part of the depth of the film, in my view. I'm glad Scott - with whom I usually disagree - pulled up all those lazy Denise Richards-oriented reviews. Truth be told, I think Oscar-winner Halle Berry gives a much more grating performance. I actually liked Richards' nonchalant delivery of " _Yeah but they're usually standing still._ " Berry would have forced so much attitude on the line, she would've stood up in the middle of the greenscreen composite, put her hands on her hips, and made her eyebrow jump 10 feet off her head. Sophie Marceau is my Ursula Andress. Seeing a woman with those motivations projected on the screen was a real landmark in my teen years! I rank this film 3rd out of 24.
6:55 yes that look that Brosnan's Bond gives to the camera, it just makes you believe that he is James Bond and he is going to be less tongue and cheek and more gritty and raw
Me being me I gotta comment on the firearm in the movie. I absolutely think the modern James Bond needs a modern gun and I'm glad they carried the P99 over from Tomorrow Never Dies. This movie is my favorite Brosnan Bond movie (Thomas Crown Affair is the best Brosnan movie) but the one scene that grates on me, as a firearm enthusiast is the scene where Bond confronts Zukofsky in the Casino holding Bull at gunpoint. When he holsters that gun, it's like he has an obvious tumor under his arm and it looks so awkward. There are much better ways to conceal a full size gun like that. (Casino Royale handled this in a very realistic manner) that scene bothers me so much that I cant help to think that Brosnan probably never wore a gun unless the scene called for it. David Zarinsky cameo at the end for the win.
1999...the year my best mate and I finished secondary education and started A Levels, the year my favourite film of all time The Matrix came out...probably also the year I wound up watching every Bond film I hadn't watched up till that point...building up to the UK TV premiere of TND...and...this... ...this...was solid...the Brosnan era is like the Connery era...there are no bad films in it...the opening chase on the Thames was awesome from a '99 perspective(the clampers getting scooshed was perfecto at that moment in time)...the helicopter assault was fun...the twist with Electra was original...and yet... ...Garbage have done better tunes...you guys were on the money regarding Reynard...there was a reference to OHMSS/Tracey which...well it's tough enough to buy Dalton as the same guy who's appeared in previous films...for Brosnan to have referenced an event that happened 30 years earlier...er...no... This is not a Bond I bothered to rewatch much if at all...generally my least favourite of the Brosnan era From a 2020 perspective...The '99-'01 era is my favourite to look back on overall...but a climax at the Millenium dome(to use it's contemporary title) now dates the film significantly. The Electra stuff I appreciate a lot more however. Overall...I'll stick with 7/10 here.
The world is not enough I would describe in one word, HEAVY. This is a heavy bond film, heavy on narrative, heavy on action, so heavy that it just has no time to breathe and no time to really incorporate any sense of real direction. Coupled with poor female characters with, I must say, bad acting - it's a narrative mess and it is not a great bond movie. However, I do believe this is Brosnan's best individual performance, but damn his supporting cast/team were amateurs.
I'm glad you're both enjoy this film! I want to say, Scott, while I agree that the submarine fight itself is a little tame compared to some of the excellent fights in the series (Bond vs Alec, Bond vs Grant), I think the ending absolutely serves and delivers on Renard's inability to feel pain. Elektra's plan hinges on Renard's quirk, since the sub going down means he's killing himself in a nuclear blast to service her goal. He is literally dying for her and the fascinating scene you reference- 'remember pleasure' - between him and her shows that. It's the only thing he can do for me. We've never had a main villain so readily willing to die to achieve the goal and I find the Renard/Elektra dynamic endlessly fascinating. Also, ramming the phallic sub into the sea floor/the uranium rod into the hole is an excellent/humorous visual metaphor for Renard. On another note, I hope there is a 'don't look too deep into the story' disclaimer for your CR06 review. The contrived nature of that film is made worse by the oh-so-serious tone. With a lighter tone here, it can be forgiven. There, it demands to be taken seriously so it should be treated as such. The erratic Bond/Vesper romance, Bond's emotional arc/journey, Mathis' senseless torture, clinical music and feminist overtones really make for the antithesis of James Bond. Why does James Bond behave like a rookie agent when he is in the elite section of MI6? It doesn't make any sense and the film relies on that.
Girl being outside in the boat at the beginning. I thought she was there to make sure their target was actually dead. Once she realizes Bond caught her, she tries to shoot him too. The laser scope was unnecessary. Why she chose to kill herself... ugh.. Yeah, we could have got more detail on that.
Of the 25 films, I rank TWINE right in the middle. Joe, did you catch the references to Majestys? The moment Elektra reveals she cut off her own earlobe is a brilliant link to Blofeld.
Given Bond falls in love, and it's a huge element of the movie, feel like all the references are subtly more intentional. Bond's reaction after Elektra asks if he lost a loved one serves a great purpose and feels very Fleming.
I used to choreograph fights professionally. It's tough to imagine a fight against a foe who can't feel the damage you are causing him. He'd need to protect his fists and stick with head-butts, maybe?
@@leitercia challenge accepted.. 1. Opportunity for a cleavage joke in the Bilbao scene. 2. She clearly fits into the outfit for the boat chase scene.. something I'm sure the casting director noticed. ;) 3. She follows in a long tradition of sexy, mysterious and deadly Bond Girls going all the way back to Dr No. 4. "When in Egypt.."
Broadly agree, good start but then fizzles out from about thirty mins in. -Renard is a disappointing character. -The plot ends up just being about oil rights, which is a let down considering the build up -Action slow and clunky. -Way too much exposition -Snooze fest finale Good parts -Brosnan is always good -Boat chase Found this difficult to stay interested in, 5.5/10.
@@jambler15 agreed. Also Renard should have gone full on Terminator at the end. He can't get pain and should have been walking through fire and brushing off bullets and knife wounds like they were nothing.
@jambler15 One producer even said they hired her for the starpower alone. Casting like that gets you awkward miscast performances, like her. They considered Monica Belluci for her at one point, would've been perfect.
I can't help but feel maybe this film would have been better if Elektra King was still evil but not the main mastermind behind it all. Twists like that should never take the teeth out of any villain and that is what happened to Renard (it's a repeat of the twist reveal of Talia al Ghul in The Dark Knight Rises). It would have elevated Renard as a bad guy if he manipulated Elektra into being his pawn which is what the film eludes to when Bond first encounters Renard face to face.
I always saw Brosnan, even more so than Lazenby, as a model who looks like what people think Bond should look like but bearing zero resemblance to the Fleming novels, unfortunately. Does anyone really believe Brosnan could be a lethal super spy? Ladies man, yes. But put a gun in his hand and he looks so out of place. It takes me out of his movies. Thank God for Craig.
Chris Thornycroft, Craig is dreadful, If I want to watch a guy with no charisma crying falling in love and resigning every other movie I'll watch a soap opera
I like this movie but I think this was the point that started calling the Brosnan years as 'Inspector Gadgit' Bond. Go-Go Gadgit self-driving car! BUT, I will say in hindsight that media manipulation was a little ahead of its time to today's world.
She's aiming with her gun at the hole in the wall already when the explosion happens. Why? She could have just sit in her boat and watch the explosion happening.
The World is Not Enough has two problems that hold it back for me: The direction and Denise Richards. Of all the Brosnan era Bond films this is the worst directed. The fact they passed on Peter Jackson for this just baffles me. I feel like Michael Apted picked the least interesting way to tell what could have been Pierce Brosnan's best Bond film. To add insult to injury this film features an actress who can't act playing a nuclear physicist. Sigh. All the other performers are giving their best and Denise Richards is just standing there being so flat and monotone.
Looking back today, the Brosnan era was weak overall. The 90's was not a good decade for Bond movies. For me, World is Not Enough is the weakest of Bronsan's Bond movies. This is an entirely forgettable movie. The terrorist Renard is wasted here. Electra King is kinda' cool in that we get a female villain for once, but she should have been the sole and only stand-alone villain. This is the movie that made me love Judi Dench as M. (whereas I wasn't keen on a female M. in the two previous films). The climax on the submarine is lackluster and dull. Denise Richards is hilarious, but should a Bond girl be unintentionally funny? But overall, World is Not Enough is a bummer and a letdown. Even Die Another Day is an improvement in my mind, because at least that movie stands out, whereas World is totally boring and forgettable.
Funny, I found Dench in this film to be the least effective in her tenure by placing too much of an emphasis on her motherly emotions. Die Another Day on the other hand is when she really proved herself in my book by treating Bond like a tool instead of a human like the proper head of a spy organization.
Probably my favourite Bond film, and I think the boat chase is visually and musically the best chase of any Bond film, HOWEVER. WHERE IS THE CAR CHASE? He gets a brand new BMW and it's just cut in half. Such a disappointment. Hadn't thought before about how the bad guy was undermined. I think Reynard should have had more depth and screen time. We know nothing about him, and he has this superpower that is never used.
Great review especially that you noticed how odd and stupid it was that the girl on boat is there to fire at bond through the hole in blown up building. unnecessary as it was the boat Chase is one of the best things ever.
And you could see with Brosnan he is way more rougher in this movie, he is way more dark and more moody right from the get go. He gets pissed off easily as well.
100% agree with you, Scott! 46.05: Father(Pierce Brosnan) & Mother(Sophie Marceau) & Daughter(Denise Richards).

And then after a film that should have had some emotional impact there's Bond romancing Christmas in the last scene.
Very well said.
51:16 'I never miss" which is such a Bond movie thing to say and I loved how cold and professional Brosnan portrayed it as well
It's the best opening to any Bond film in my opinion. Hits a lot of high notes and it's obviously really exciting. The film overall is a return to form after TND too. Glad I got to watch it in the cinema at the time, a good way to close out the century.
A great Bond film and David Arnold's score knocks it out of the park.
I just want to give a shout out to Scott for his always keen insight but also for the head's up on the re-released expanded TWINE score. My copy arrived a couple of days ago. It truly re-frames the score and is reminder of its significance.
My explanation for Cigar Girl:
She was there to confirm the plan went down, had the gun incase anyway looked outside.
Definately agree with you guys. Goldeneye and The World Is Not Enough best Brosnan films
lookigotanewusername I agree with you agreeing with them. For sure they are!
For me, TND and GE are my best bond films
@@thedarkknightman6150 TND never sat well with me. But hey, at least we can both agree on GoldenEye!
@@lookigotanewusername yep, but pity you don't like Tomorrow Never Dies
@@thedarkknightman6150 I wanted to like it. I love pierce brosnan, I don't think it's bad by any stretch, but I'd rather watch goldeneye or the world is not enough instead. Like these guys say Bond is like pizza and sex, even when its bad its good
Brilliant! I've been waiting for this!!
Cigar Girl was outside the MI6 building because she was running the transmitter which activated King's lapel pin, which in turn activiated the uranium ore which caused the explosion.
It's in the novelization, as Tanner explains. Those first few lines were cut, so his next lines were played over an establishing shot of the castle.
if uranium is involved no one in the city will survive
You’re right Scott, you are crazy about GoldenEye and Tomorrow Never Dies.
I'm glad to see a lot of fans are coming around to this one as this is my personal favorite. I was kind of surprised at the amount of hate it's gotten over the years, with people essentially saying Richards completely sinks the film. Thanks for reviewing!
It's funny when so many past Bonds had pretty awful talent go overlooked. She is awful but doesn't hurt the rest of the film
And Scott-I love Cigar girl/Tony Sopranos imaginary neighbor too!!👌🏻
The action overall is great.
Niels Christiansen
It is-it’s mostly that ski chase and the ending that seems to lack punch to me somehow.
"Electra's pipeline is under attack" sounds quite dodge.
I really loved this film. Other than Denise I can’t really hate it that much. I think they do a lot right and took some different turns. I think it’s very underrated.
Lots of action scenes, one that wasn’t mention was Bond swinging on the chains while the Russian base was exploding
That surprise ending to this video, loved it!
What a day, I have a new video from my favourite Bond reviewers and the latest issue from Empire was waiting for me when I got home from work, with a free Bond special magazine enclosed! I really must give TWINE another go, as I really dont care for it, I think it's less than the sum of its parts.
TWINE(1999) is actually the last good James Bond film....................
16:42 Reminds me of the chase scene in Live And Let Die when one of the speedboats goes through a wedding cake.👍
The introduction of Wade and Purvis,
The beginning of the end for Bond movie's
People used to say The World Is Not Enough is not good and then when I watched it I was like they did some interesting things with the movie which they could have built upon with Brosnan. First of all there is an element raw anger and viciousness to Brosnan which automatically makes it his best performance, Sophie Marceau was amazing as Elecktra and as the only female villain to date, loved the score and the action setpieces for most part. Denise Richards was outlandish and hard to believe but to me she did not have a significant role which I am glad with
I never really gave this film a chance, when I did I throughly enjoy it
41:21 the difference between american and british humour. Q referring to the speedboat as his future fishing boat is irony and british humour that most people in the uk would get that its not meant literally
"But she's not terrible in it ..." OMG, the horrible damage excessive masturbation can do to a man's brain ... 😟
Agreed - underrated. Brosnan’s best. Thanks guys, great video.

Another solid review. Thanks. Cheers & see you at the NTTD premiere ! 😉
( I hope not kicking and screaming when it doesn't match our high expectations.
First Bond film I ever saw at the Cinema.
Daxton Mounger Exactly, and although it’s still good, The World is Not Enough gives us probably the best and only female villain of the series!
Yeah, I don't get the undying love for GoldenEye. I think Casino Royale is another factor that has helped its legacy (Martin Campbell connection).
Another great analysis! Thanks! My show partner Keith and I love your channel.
pierce Brosnan's Best Bond movie moments 8 out of ten
To start, I've loved this series. Haven't had time to comment. I've agreed and disagreed with both of you over time. I know that this film gets bashed, largely due to Denise Richards, but it's one of my go-to Bond films. Pierce is great, Electra is a great villain. The pre-credits is one of the best. They really tried to do something different here, but fell short. I don't like the ski scene or the helicopter bit. Take those out, focus even more on character development and this would be a gem. (And no Denise Richards)
*VIDEO IDEA*
Hey Hos and Scott! Been listening since 2006/2007!! (I tied with 'BlackBond' in the Being James Bond Contest back in 2008 - remember skiing in the Lazenby tux? Haha) So here's a video idea:
I love how you guys review the films (going back to the start) and when you review the theme songs (love to hear Scott's reaction to NDTD). Always perk up when Scott mentions the soundtracks. Maybe do an episode(s) where you both talk about the film scores and review them! The highs and lows and Scott's knowledge of the album releases to cap each film.
Live Like Bond!
MM
My favourite Bond film. Sure, Casino Royale is the better Bond film but TWINE ticks all the boxes. Dat soundtrack too.
"Electra's pipeline is under attack". I bet it is. James, you naughty thing.
One of my favorites
I am pretty sure Tanner mentions something about "The Cigar Girl turning the pin on" or something like that.
6:55 yes that look that Brosnan's Bond gives to the camera, it just makes you believe that he is James Bond and he is going to be less tongue and cheek and more gritty and raw
The ending though haha I love these
I think this is Brosnan's best one.. The plot is reasonably believable and he does have some decent emotional scenes
I can’t wait for the DAD review lol this will be interesting!!
This is not a Bond I bothered to rewatch much if at all...generally my least favourite of the Brosnan era
From a 2020 perspective...The '99-'01 era is my favourite to look back on overall...but a climax at the Millenium dome(to use it's contemporary title) now dates the film significantly.
At the end of the day, actors are at the mercy of a script but in the case of Denise Richards she was a shit actress.
Joe, I love ya, but “winged dove” is not a real expression.
Dad-"Go upstairs and put some clothes on!"😂
Girl being outside in the boat at the beginning. I thought she was there to make sure their target was actually dead. Once she realizes Bond caught her, she tries to shoot him too. The laser scope was unnecessary. Why she chose to kill herself... ugh.. Yeah, we could have got more detail on that.
Very nice
Sophie Marceau as Catwoman would be interesting
Of the 25 films, I rank TWINE right in the middle. Joe, did you catch the references to Majestys? The moment Elektra reveals she cut off her own earlobe is a brilliant link to Blofeld.
Given Bond falls in love, and it's a huge element of the movie, feel like all the references are subtly more intentional. Bond's reaction after Elektra asks if he lost a loved one serves a great purpose and feels very Fleming.
@@TheT3rr0rMask Agreed. This movie has more depth than its reputation suggests. It also has one of the series' most grim storylines.
I used to choreograph fights professionally. It's tough to imagine a fight against a foe who can't feel the damage you are causing him. He'd need to protect his fists and stick with head-butts, maybe?
"she's got that.."
"she's really convincing.."
"what she brings to the table.."
We all know what she brings to the table guys!
Nick Newman so.... what does she bring?
@@leitercia challenge accepted..
1. Opportunity for a cleavage joke in the Bilbao scene.
2. She clearly fits into the outfit for the boat chase scene.. something I'm sure the casting director noticed. ;)
3. She follows in a long tradition of sexy, mysterious and deadly Bond Girls going all the way back to Dr No.
4. "When in Egypt.."
Broadly agree, good start but then fizzles out from about thirty mins in.
-Renard is a disappointing character.
-The plot ends up just being about oil rights, which is a let down considering the build up
-Action slow and clunky.
-Way too much exposition
-Snooze fest finale
Good parts
-Brosnan is always good
-Boat chase
Found this difficult to stay interested in, 5.5/10.
I think Denise Richards isn't bad. The dialogue she has to give, especially in the sub is just impossibly clunky to deliver.
Unforgivably bad decision by the filmmakers to keep her around for the final 10 minutes. In the end, it's their fault. Not Denise's.
@@TheT3rr0rMaskYes. Something similar happened with the Paris Carver character in Tomorrow Never Dies lol.
'I thought Christmas only came once a year'. Surely Brosnan had enough clout to refuse to say that line.
I'm sure he did but he always has a touch of Roger Moore quipping on occasion so he probably fancied getting a laugh from the audience.
At the end of the day he didn't have much clout. He was branded as being difficult if he didn't like the script.
Bond movies are filled with silly lines like that.
Having the PTS finish at the bank would be different. The audience would be recovering from a low key PTS. Then 10 minutes later, the boat chase.
You guys know that “mano a mano” means hand-to-hand, not man-to-man, right?
I can't help but feel maybe this film would have been better if Elektra King was still evil but not the main mastermind behind it all. Twists like that should never take the teeth out of any villain and that is what happened to Renard (it's a repeat of the twist reveal of Talia al Ghul in The Dark Knight Rises). It would have elevated Renard as a bad guy if he manipulated Elektra into being his pawn which is what the film eludes to when Bond first encounters Renard face to face.
Fair at best, the villain is so underwhelming, it’s as if they shaved Elijah Woods head and sent him to fight Bond. A 7? More like a 6.
Craig can only get a girl 'cus it's in the script
Chris Thornycroft, Craig is dreadful, If I want to watch a guy with no charisma crying falling in love and resigning every other movie I'll watch a soap opera
I like this movie but I think this was the point that started calling the Brosnan years as 'Inspector Gadgit' Bond. Go-Go Gadgit self-driving car! BUT, I will say in hindsight that media manipulation was a little ahead of its time to today's world.
I liked Goldie in the film. 'I must have bumped my head'.
Not sure Christmas would have been wearing those clothes. Working with all those men.
Everyone is different. This is a fine movie, but Tomorrow Never Dies is much better.
Dudes, the Cigar Girl is there to make sure the explosion happens, the lapel pin worked
She's aiming with her gun at the hole in the wall already when the explosion happens. Why? She could have just sit in her boat and watch the explosion happening.
I actually prefer TWINE over GoldenEye and Tomorrow Never Dies.
I don't think it's just Apted's direction, the cinematography is pretty bland as well
@@mikepretty7768 And at the end of the day Michael Apted gave the thumbs up and said "Yeah. That's good. Moving on."
I love this film.
Probably my favourite Bond film, and I think the boat chase is visually and musically the best chase of any Bond film,
HOWEVER.
Bloody great film
And you could see with Brosnan he is way more rougher in this movie, he is way more dark and more moody right from the get go. He gets pissed off easily as well.
Poor Scott..... :(
He is so right!🤣 46:05
