- Pervez Hoodbhoy is a Pakistani nuclear physicist and activist in particular concerned with promotion of freedom of speech, secularism and education in Pakistan. He visited Canada. He was engaged in talk on the role of Religion in the evaluation of human civilization. What religion says about science and the creation of universe.
Undoubtedly Dr Hodbhoy is a free thinker and a social scientists beside his scientific knowledge and credentials. Thanks for sharing g this video with us. You have also raised good questions dear Junaid sahib.

Pakistan is wasting its money on terrorism, military nuclear weapons and anti India propaganda. They do not have the time or the money for positive development.

Anchor way of framing his questions was mind blowing. Hoodbhoy looked very confused.
Science is passing through its period of infancy, it will cover billions n billions miles of journey ahead. The answer which science cannot answer today' will answer tomorrow. But it doesn't mean that a diety is needed to answer.
The subsidiaries/outlets of many religions like Protestants, Mirzaai, Siks and Jain have gained their grounds in the human society due to their knowledge based on the scientific values. The Universe is based/formed on The Universal Mathematical Logic set by The Creator once for all and the human future too obviously depends upon it.
Will you live up to that day answer what science has to over. Science is wonderful but the struggle to defy the existence of God it has made it little awkward. Please check my comment in main thread.
Science can only explain the How, it does not deal with the Why.
Please understand what science can and cannot do.
Diety is the only answer to how it all began.

Dr. Pervez Hoodbhoy is a great physicist and social activist. He is also a brave person as it's not easy to live among flesh eating hounds. However the problem is that this discussion is conducted in Urdu. Urdu language does not qualify for this kind of discussion. I recommend to listen Neil Degrasse Tyson. He explained such questions superbly.

How do you say that urdu does not qualify for this kind of discussion. In India all the great movies are made in urdu. Deewan e Ghalib, a masterpiece is written in urdu. One can express all kinds of thought in urdu.

For me, the basic premise of this argument "do we need God or not" is flawed. Its not about do we need God or not, its about whether God exists or not. Logically speaking, denying the existence of God is hard. Therefore, its a smart move by Dr. hoodbhoy to twist the basic question of "whether God exists or not" to "whether we need God to understand the universe".

After reading comments, it is obvious that Pakistan is neither ready for asking questions nor prepared for rational discussion. I really feel for Dr. Hoodbhoy for banging his head against a wall but also hats off for him to be persistent in his effort to help Pakistan society evolve into a progressive culture.
Even organized religions have not found the answers to all the questions. If that was the case, world would not be this ignorant and violent.

All religions should be respected. But all religions are not same.
Many people need to get a grip and realise that science, as we know it today, has no business in spirituality, whilst religion does. Islam, as a way of life, has genuinely pushed it's adherents to reason and observe the world for what is; and those that actually practiced these ideals in the golden period of Islam did indeed produce some of the greatest works in human history. However, religion now has been cultivated into a form that is devoid of anything interesting. The curiosity and that encouragement of free thought in the Islamic faith, has sadly now turned into a monotonous and a very materialist religion, instead (but it is changing!). Atheists, or free thinkers shouldn't bother people of spirituality, or take them out of their comfort zone; as often an atheist/agnostic ponders deeply over philosophical ideas and spirituality than the average religious person does, indeed. It amazes me that people often have to try and scrutinise Professor Hoodbhoy on his religious beliefs and ideas, as he clearly isn't religious and neither does he claim to be. He is an excellent scientist, not a philosopher! We admire him and are proud of his amazing works. As a muslim, with an extremely strong conviction of my faith, I realise that the world we're living in today, at such an exciting yet testing times for humanity as a whole, that has come after the advent of deen e Muhammad (saw), rahmatul lil alameen, cannot just be a mere coincidence. I'm sure people of all religions can try to connect the dots and learn their history to make sense of the present, but the great sacrifices our Prophet Muhammad (saw) and his holy family (asws) bore to advance the ideals of humanity, to live without oppression and injustice, to be humble to things we do not know yet is a fantastic fellowship to be part of, and we need to understand how their great deeds continue to play a positive role to this day. People who like to bash muslims, need to realise there has been a sustained media onslaught against Muslims for many years now, who have, as a result, had their nations invaded on sheer lies. Over a million muslims have been killed in the past decade alone by non-muslims. The extremist wahabbi ideology that has been spreading this wanton image of Islam has frankly been supported by the freedom loving western states, which shows the extreme hypocrisy and disregard of human rights, despite being host to societies the rest of world likes to follow.

Concept of God is a man made concept. That’s why there are more than 4000 religions and thousands of gods. Every religion claims to be the right one, but don’t provide any evidence. Therefore, if one religion says that they are right and other 4000+ religions are wrong, then with the same logic their religion is wrong too.
Religion has no relevance in the modern world. It’s just a tool created by rich and powerful to control and manipulate people.

Except that there is no such thing as an ideal form or good, this is an abstraction that has no bearing on reality. The dead hand of Plato prevented, arguably, the discovery of self evident scientific realities, such as evolution, due to his espousal of essentialism.
Take a concept as simple as a straight line, that which has length and no width, yet in practise, it is impossible to demonstrate and doesn’t exist. No amount of essentialism can change this observed fact.
That contradicts what we realise was only ever our own implicit assumption that we assumed to be the truth. Any line we can draw or envision would of necessity HAVE to contain width, as it’s corollary. This point is important, since much of our thought and the phenomenon we deem absolute, are actually just approximations devised by ourselves for our own convenience. They are NOT an accurate representation of truth.

Dear Prakash, Hindu is not any Religion. Hindu is supposed to call all who lives in Hind, as area from River Indus till Mayanmar roughly. Dear you believe and I also believe, and generally almost all believe there is one God, in Hind it is known as Bhagwan, Eshwar, in Arab area is used to call Elohim, Elei, and in Arabic it is known as Allah. Since there is only One God, who is The Creator of every thing, He gave only one Region. Religion to worship Him only, and follow His commands. All humans supposed to follow One God, worship one God, and follow His teachings and practice in our lives. Who ever will follow His Commands, and teachings will go in Swarg, who ever disobey God will go to nark. Very simple isn't it ?

Science is a process of discovering what already exists and it may be an indefinite process. Creationism is total fiction and not consistent even philosophically. It's like a comedian said that 2000years from now simple minded folks could start reading Harry Potter as scriptures but the proved rules of Science will still be the same. Religion was only humanity's 1st attempt to understand morality but unlike science it doesn't allow for more attempts or any evolutionary process because that would be blasphehemy.

Person like This Hood bhoy, never understand, because Allah (swt) said in very beginning, in Quran, This is The Book, which is Guidance for God Fearing ( Muttaqi), and those who look for guidance, other wise they will just waste there time.
