    By the way if you have rear disc brakes there's no way the axle can fall out even if the bearing fails because the caliper holds the disc and the disc is bolted to the axle

      grate now what i restoration ( pre-yah-hoots 2019~ so hopefully it's still okay without damage ect ) my 1967-71 8-3/4 742 3.2 rear with the carbon-rotors/17in-rim-kit ( 0miles under power sofar sadly as my 383-trubo'd car/charger got chopped/stolen and haven't got it back together yet 😡😢 ) but the instructions were clear that greens were the only ones that fit and dana/dodge in the 90's or 2000's used the same part numbers for the back of suv's/truck's and yes i remember one/customers that came into the boss's gm/dsm/race shop for repairs in 2008-13 and me at 17-21yo
      chris didn't mention were to get parts or how to get it to work with my saved bit's, next choice for a rear was dropout/used C6 or C7 ( ended up with the transmission TR6070 ( wanted.42OD for hyway drivability ect and 1st's 3:1 lower gear ect ) but passed on the IRS for now ) completely assembly but im like chirs and daily and drag* ( wheel-hop and a extra 200lb's or so = pass 👎 ) and occasionally load my trunk-up/airport-run 😉 but not towing as i have a k1500 single-cab-8ft-bed for that task

    There is an engineering formula that calculates how long a ball bearing will last. Chinesium used that formula to cut down on the amount of balls to make them last just long enough to take your money. I hate the ball bearings in the 2014 Ford explorer, here in the snow country the salt permanently fuses the bearings into the aluminum knuckle.

    I love all your videos Chris but this "tech tip" is udder bullshit. If your V2 green bearings are failing that quick you have a setup issue. You probably have some pre-load on the bearing. V2 green bearings cannot have pre-load or they will fail. They are designed to free float ever so slightly in the housings. This is a setup issue on your end and not the bearings fault. The green bearings are the same design as the mopar 7 1/4 and ford 9 inch rear axles. Those bearings go for tens of thousands of trouble free miles even under abuse. Just because they failed for you and your setup doesn't mean that applies to everyone.

    • @mickangio16
      @mickangio16 6 месяцев назад

      I guess if you drive your car like HE does it's an issue😁 You wouldn't have a license for long here. I used Green Bearings in two cars that I remember. Both were everyday cars. One of the cars was my son's Charger that a failed tapered bearing had damaged the housing, so the Green Bearing was a fix for it. That was about thirty years ago and my friend owns the car now and it's still fine although it's not an everyday driver anymore and doesn't get driven the way Luke Duke would. The other car that I remember putting them in was an everyday 340 Duster that I put a B-body 8-3/4 in and caused me no trouble for years. That rear end wound up in my brother's Duster later with no problems. I think it depends on what you're gonna do with the car.

    Those are a high angle roller bearing designed for radial and axial loads, but they are too small for the axle, because what you need is a dual row high angle bearing which has far more load capability. However a dual row bearing will not fit in your axle housing. Those single row bearings are probably fine for Mom going to and from the store, but for Chris Birdsong- no way.

And steering colum. I don't know if it was a R/T or not. But was told it was a 440 magnum that came out of it. No rust what so ever and all in gray primer. He wanted 500.00 dollars for it and at the time my wife said no because no place to keep it. I kick my self every time I see what they sell for now. I have one question for you though, do you have any videos of you building the general. I have looked on your channel and didn't see any. Chris, taper bearings are far from ideal with rear disc brakes. Which are supposed NOT to have sideways movement. They dont when you fit them but after 25 or 30 road race laps they defenitly do. And this with premium brand bearings. As soon as the bearing allows movement away goes the brake pedal with pad knock off. And that with a single piston floating head calliper. With 4 pots very bad news, the reason I use single piston
    As for the bearing cage, hit it with a hammer, they shatter. Just watch out for flying shards as they are sharp. 50 y/o 9" axle bearing bit me for 3 stitches in my leg! First time in 50 years but always a first time.
    GM often used single row ball bearing axles in the 60s, the 'premium' 9" axle is double row ball bearing. So far from new. However probably double the number of balls

  • @SE-me2pt

    I agree, but I actually had a original factory tapered bearing failure way back in the 90's. Was doing about 110 down the highway in my 440 Charger when POW ! Was able to limp off the highway and get a tow. I won't blame the bearing but it turned out to be a lubrication issue. I would love to see a O.E.M. replacement video. I had a Dodge dealer do the repair (Vin Devers) but the tech ruined the axle when cutting the old bearing off. Fortunately Tom Devers found me a low mileage axle assembly with a good bearing etc. It was an expensive repair (over 700 bucks total). Has been fine for 30 years now. Had I used the "green" bearing I'm sure it would have failed long ago.

    • @SE-me2pt
      @SE-me2pt 7 месяцев назад

      Another part of that big expense was because I had the dealer go through the differential due to the severity of the event. Also the inner seal would not seat properly so some extra labor was involved to get if perfect.

Then they went to tapered bearings with larger but fewer bearings. All cost driven. So, when you cut open this bearing......I was amused. I guess the next big change will be bubble gum bearings. Gee aftermarket parts that aren't as good as factory parts......who would have thunk??????

    I love the opener!! Thanks for the heads up on this. I've long been saying "car shows" and museums are the death camps for real cars. Drive em!! and keep the demand up for OE quality parts. Mopar spent lots of money and great engineering minds making the systems to endure. Upgrade with OE parts not aftermarket sales pitch.

    Since you have no frame rails for leafs, are you going to use coils to support the super shit box? Lol

    I'm sticking with drum brakes on the rear of my 68 belvedere 4door. The drums need replaced. So I'm thinking of finding the 11×2.5 rear drum brake set up off of a Cbody. Maybe they'll work Maybe not. I'm thinking clearance issues with the leafsprings.

    Roller bearings are better as the load is spread over a greater area.
