How UK honours list system has become 'politicised'

  • Leading names from the arts, from sport, from science to charity will be honoured at the end of this month at Buckingham Palace in an awards process that's always been shrouded in secrecy, decided by members of ten Government committees - all perfectly fair and independent, say ministers.
    (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News...)
But a number of committee members have come forward, claiming pressure was put on them to approve honours for Conservative Party supporters and donors, and that the whole system has become politicised.

Honours for long public service is a great idea. But it never seems to really extend to those people who give life long service at the lower end of the pay scale. And usually in much less glamorous occupations.
I'd be much more impressed if the honours system included a few more nurses, posties, refuse collectors, teachers, paramedics, care workers, railway workers, bus drivers etc.
Instead we get Lady Mone of Mayfair.
(Drag Queen name if ever there was.)

Just a friendly reminder that David Beckham openly stated that he only does charity work to get honours, and I wouldn't be surprised if that is more prevalent. There should be some clear boundaries. For instance, you shouldn't get one for just doing your job, that includes singers, sports people etc. You shouldn't get one if you invite the media to photograph you as you do charity work as that just proved the intent behind it. There are genuinely good people out there that deserve honours much more than celebrities.

"You shouldnt get one for doing your job" - I'd disagree with you on that there...for a lot of people the only way they can afford to do good work is by getting the right kind of job that helps them achieve that end.
Without that qualifying factor then the only people who could really afford to be so entitled are those rich enough to already have a few inherited from day one.

I don't see Beckham's honours as a bad thing. I don't care if he does it only for the Honours - he does it and that's the whole point. That's what honours are for: to motivate people to do stuff they wouldn't otherwise do. Do you see?

It’s not hard to understand the underlying purpose of the honours system today regardless of who are ultimately responsible for awarding them.
Honours are only awarded to those people whether professional (particularly in mainstream politics, media, armed services, acting etc) or, seemingly to provide balance, genuinely commendable laypeople (like voluntary workers, long term care workers or helpful foot postmen/women etc.,) whose actions or attitudes however do not in any way challenge or threaten the underlying economic social neoliberal political system. This inevitably discourages many lay people to believe that the current political status quo cannot be challenged or radically overhauled by political means.
This indirectly reflects and addresses the question as to why the mass political media always seem to ask every time a new political story or revelation occurs whether it’s another chance for Boris Johnson to make a political comeback (as if he’s actually left!)
Obviously there are some who wish he’d return as Prime Minister however anyone would think by this fawning media coverage there was a mass desperation amongst the UK population at large that he does which of course is debatable.

It's open to corruption and those who are corrupt make use of it.
Dont think sports people should get a "gong". They get money via the lottery money to help them when they are professionals. They get honours via their sport and money from companies brands. Many of the professional sports people spend their days concentrating and training in their sports, not holding down a job!
Nor should party donors be given honours for any Party support, even if they do good work, it should be if you are a donor you cannot get an honour.
Politicians should not be part of the decision making and should be independently decided by a committee. Honours should no longer be given titles of, "The British Empire" etc. Retitle them as 'Honourable Citizen of the United Kingdom', or 'Good Citizen Award' etc. They should be given to people deserving such as Teachers, Nurses, Doctors, Scientists, Enginerrs, for doing a good job all your life in whatever job you do, even ordinary people in Charities example those starting and running Food Banks, Go out to the homeless and help them. Britain! Once renowned for its intelligent society, today with, by far, the least educated members of our society we've ever seen, or ever experienced before. It's shocking! In 1986, you'll find there was a major change in the British education system. It saw the very good O'Level and CSE standard just done away with, (for a reason nobody even knows, still today), and replaced with this "excuse of an education" they call GCSE's. Has anyone actually bothered to look at, not only how they're being taught, but exactly what they're being taught, today?
Today, it's not an education. It's only a memory test. Today, they're not taught who worked something out, or how that person came to figure that something out, and not even what led that person to work that something out? Nope, today, they're merely told, this is how we do something... (X + y - Z = ?)… Etc. So write it down, so you remember it, and then they just move on? And my goodness, we have to say, doesn't it show?

Typical behaviour from the Conservative and Unionist Party. In the highly unlikely event that I was offered an honour, I wouldn't accept anything that had 'British Empire' on it anyway. Just makes you wonder whether the Supreme Court decision on the Scottish independence referendum and the more recent High Court decision on deportations to Rwanda weren't also manipulated by the Tories.
