when football was still an art form sadly a little after this era. it started to go downhill. now its just big money and players that don't work hard enough for huge salaries who are basically just greyhounds with a few fancy flicks here and there
WELLBRAN It still is an art form, what about Barcelona 2006-2011, they played some beautiful football or even teams like Bayern who played expressive counterattack football when they won the treble. I heavily disagree with this argument, football is on a higher technical level now than any time before due to better coaching and better access to skills from previous players. Are players overpaid sure, but most of that money isn't based around their performance and more so their marketing value.
I agree that there is too much money in football today but saying that its gone downhill is such bullshit. Football got way more entertaining and talented players dont rot away on the bench today like they used to.
i agree 100% with you. I used enjoy watching back then not anymore and I was lucky enough to live in Holand my teenage years and saw live all these players. it was my golden age and this is the reason I am watching this video 2020.

He could play all: defense, midfield, forward! Also, great head punch he had! Most complete player ever !
Watched him play sweeper, centre-half, anchor midfield, centre-mid, winger, attacking mid, and forward, and be the best in each position on his team (and often in the game). Sometimes he would play all those positions in one match. Throw in the fact he could cross, pass, dribble, and control the ball about as well with both feet as a lot of players could with their best one and you had a unique player of phenomenal potential.
Indeed, probably the most versatile player ever to grace the game.
What is funny is that he said in an interview that his technique wasn't that great and his asset was mostly speed. He could dribble amazingly but here he also takes some incredibly difficult volley shots etc.

Such a passionate player. You can see the pure joy in his face when he scored! My girlfriend lived in the Netherlands as a child and remembers encountering Ruud Gullit in a restaurant there once. Because their tables were joined (presumably diner style), she said that every time he laughed, it was so hearty that the vibrations would bounce her up and down! Im very jealous that she inadvertantly met the great man, to say the least!

I do not know why Gullit was so underrated. He was a complete footballer (you will find it difficult to find these days) and scored some incredible goals at both club and country. There are many other players who are more acclaimed than Gullit and this video shows it is not fair.

There aren’t many players throughout history who you could label as being ‘unique’, but Gullit definitely falls into that category. What an animal. He started his career in midfield but spent most of his prime at striker when his teams realised he was just so unstoppable. Surely the most dominant player ever. You can always see who the best players were at specific moments throughout football history when you see trends for club and national teams, e.g Barcelona and Spain late 00s/early 10s with Xavi, Iniesta, Puyol etc - Gullit, Van Basten, Rijkaard dominated with Milan and also won in 88 with Holland. Incredible legacy.

What is so special about Gullit is how devastating he was in his finishing with both of his feet and his head! I have never seen anybody so powerful on the ball - once you gave him even a nanosecond on the ball to release a shot, you could be sure that he would score! The immense power with which he stroke the ball left the goalkeepers paralysed - they simply didn't have the time to react and block his shots! His height and his long legs made his shots so devastating! Another thing worth to mention was his infectious, childlike celebration - I must say that the best goal scorers in the history of football (Pele, Maradona, Ronaldo Nazario da Lima, Romario, etc.) have all been like Gullit in this sense. I truly believe that this immense, uncontrollable joy inspired him to score even more goals - he lived for that feeling - you can absolutely tell that!
