I am so thankful to see a rescue that realizes the reality...we can not " fix" all of them, but allowing some to move on to greener pastures is the humane gift to give them...let their spirits run free just not here on earth.
😭 For Topper, the beautiful paint. We all have to remember to take care of our and others health as soon as possible Please don't just let "things" go. The future prognosis is not always good. Money at times is tough to come by, but there has to be a way for our furbabies and ourselves. 🙏😔
Love horses, and especially love the people compassionate enough to give them the best life possible. Y'all are wonderful. ❤ I was a farm kid and loved working with the horses, cattle and pigs. I now do equine therapy, for service related PTSD, and it makes me love and respect horses even more. Thankfully my psychologist is a horse person, has been her entire life, and seems to have a good eye for rescues that might need help and are open to helping others. Watching her interact with the horses is amazing. Very sad about the Toppers leg. I still can't comprehend why anyone would allow that to happen. Thank you all for showing Topper he was loved, even if only for a short time. 🤗
But you did help Topper! You gave him a chance you gave him love and kindness he did not know the horror of the slaughter house you did alot for this horse God Bless you all.
They put him down so as not to waste money on him. Sucks. He probably could have lived for years like that it's not like he was going down and unable to get up.
I must say something about your vet. What a kind ,gentle, soft toned man when he speaks to the horses. He reminds me so much of the vet l had in my horse days. He was aways ready to teach me in my early days. He is your very best friend ❤❤
No judging here, it's never easy working around an injured horse, especially one who is scared and doesn't know you. But, speaking from experience...a life long equestrian, personally, I would never try to wrap a leg by going underneath the belly to the opposite leg. I would always work on the side where the injury is and not close to a wall where you can get trapped if the poop hits the fan. I think by the end that's how it got done. I had a lump in my throat watching you guys. I've worked around kickers and it's stressful. I hope she feels better soon and it gets easier when she's in less pain because she seems sweet otherwise. Popper made me cry, I was praying for a solution, he's so sweet. I don't understand why people have horses but refuse to get them the care they need. They should have surrendered him the moment he got hurt so he had a fighting chance. RIP. Good luck and keep up the great work. You guys rock!
When we had to stitch up my horse's stifle after a dog bite, we held up the opposite foreleg. Worked beautifully, he was a bit iffy about having his stifle touched but with the forefoot up in the air he couldn't get his hind foot off the ground.
Furacin wrap: 1. Slather Furacin on leg 2. Wrap it with saran wrap 3. Use a quilted wrap, or cotton batting wrap over the saran wrap 4. Standing wrap, or vet wrap Duct tape will pull at the hair, and can irritate the skin. It'll hurt when it's pulled off because it'll pull the hair out. And you will have a horse who starts to hate the process even more.
What I would suggest is picking up and holding a forefoot so she's already three-legged, she cant strike out then when applying the ointment and wrapping it
@@PonyTalesRefuge well something to think about for the future I've done it before which is why I suggested it this is just to get her over the hump of working on her leg once she gets used to it you don't have to do it anymore
Thanx Ladies! And I do not envy you having to get that leg wrapped, but good job! 👍 Bravo tothe owners that send you their horses instead of adding to the pipeline. 🏆💗
Picking up her front foot will help but in time she will cooperate with you as she gains more confidence in her surroundings she WILL TURN around. Nice horse I see that she will be a much better horse for training when she realize that she is safe
Great job with your rescues. Sorry you had to put one down. I also appreciate the vet and the Farrier having microphones so I can hear their expertise. It was so long ago that I had horses, that all five horse areas I frequented are now housing developments, businesses, and one middle eastern shrine where a beautiful ranch home with Stardust and Fireball used to pasture. I had horses 🐎 from 1976-1979. Then I got my license and cars were the next horse to master. I didn't have enough money when I was 18 to go to a professional horsemanship school so I gave up on pursuing a career in horses. I will never be able to ride a horse again but I would love to have some horsey place to go to pet them and I miss the smell of a clean barn.
Just a suggestion try picking up her front leg next time you have to wrap it. Horses can’t stand on two legs. She’ll have to keep the bad leg down for balance. 🐴♥️
Paulie leaning on her does a similar thing - she needs to weight shift and cant do it fast. At least you know exactly when. You need to do the same thing with cows.
We could have tried that if she hadn't been sedated. Also though, we have had horses kick with their hind leg when a front leg was lifted. Some horses can stand on two legs! Lol
Personally if she picks her feet up good the best thing I've ever found is picking up the opposite leg , or puking the tail to the side ofnthe effected side, but you kniw her better ❤ Pauly did a great job , she actually being a doll she's just in pain ❤
Someone needs to 3D print a pad on a long stick for reaching across to put ointment on. Also, instead of a stick would it work better yo use two long grabbers like for getting things that are up high down to get it started?
Hi all, appreciate your dedication. Someone else might already have said this, but try holding up her good leg while a second person works on the bad leg. Or offer her a bucket of grain to distract her. Good luck!
Its always hard to put an animal down. The things with horses, is that it is really difficult to take care of an animal that big with a broken leg. Has it been done before? Yes, but in my opinion when something like that happens, it is just easier to put them down.
Next time you have to wrap it put him up next to a fence like you did with the big draft horses and wrap it. Incase he kicks, he won't kick anything but the fence and give something in between you.
Pauly is a champion ..no you're all champions you've just do your best for the horses that come to your rescue. We can see it is hard and thank you for caring.
I think you did amazing with wrapping emily's leg tbh. You took patience and didn't try to continuously force her (within reason you had to do if -of course- for medical reasons) but you handled that amazing.
I don’t know much about horses but I wondered why you didn’t turn the horse around so the sore leg would be on the outside to be wrapped rather than trying to reach under her?
Everytime you say "it's finally SPRING" you literally jinx it and it starts snowing again! :D I'm kinda sad about topper, he looked so so cute with his little black ears :( BUT I'm happy that you let him and Raider run freely without pain over greener grass. Sometimes it's just the best decision to let them go. ♥ Thank you for your brave desicions and that you always think about what's best for the horses!
Love love love the new beginning you guys totally rock!! So glad your back I missed you all. Can’t wait to see what you have in store for us. Did Dr Jim get new boots what a fashionista!🤩🤩🤩🤩👏👏🐴🐴🇦🇺🇦🇺
What if you secure the saran roll to the wall. Then attach a long ribbon to the loose end and leave it on the floor. Horse walks in and over it. Then use ribbon to pull / start the wrap. You can put the roll on a metal rod and use clamp or bolts to raise or lower it to the correct height . Rod is vertical.
Pauly is one very brave farrier. I was holding my breath for that entire segment of the show and praying that no one got hurt. Your weather in Wisconsin is very changeable and extreme. Great show.
Amazing first episode, great job everyone! All of you are true heroes! I am always happy to see Dr. Jim - and Pauly. And boy Pauly do you have lots of courage to go underneath a horse that has been kicking!
I love your striped riding boots! Very much enjoyed the show! I'm not sure why you didn't move the horse with the leg wound to the other side to begin with so that you could treat her without dangerously reaching underneath?
Oh my goodness I just got angry looking at this poor poor horse, walking around on the lake like that he should’ve already been given the last act of kindness that sent on his way to peace. He has to be in so much pain or she thank you so much for all y’all day that way up north I’m in Florida.

First of all, get the horse out of the stall, away from other horses. Next position her so the limb you need to work on is facing away from the wall and have someone holding her halter. Always stand close to the horse's barrel when working on the hind legs until she learns to trust you.
Good job both with the camera and everything else you're doing! I love that Tales from The Tundra is a real reality show with all the struggles. Also thank you for going through the situations after. ❤👏

With the long end of the rope threaded through the loop around the neck allow a large loop on the floor, move the horse back and forth until she places a foot in the loop on the floor. Pull the end of the rope through the neck loop until the hoof is off the floor. Now she is standing on three legs, one of which you want to work on she will not be able to move it. Always best to pad the neck loop so as not to leave browsing. It was possible to buy a leather harness for this work in Australia 60 years ago when I worked for a saddler, in your business it would be good to have one although expensive.

I kept saying to myself - Why didn't they turn her around so they could reach the sore part without crawling under her?

why didn't you just move her to the other side? so it was the side you needed?
I couldn't make sense of that. The other horse so close made me nervous too.
That's what they had tried the day earlier, so we wanted to try reaching from the other side. The bad leg is the one she kept kicking with as she doesn't like it touched. Being on the other side made it a bit safer for us.
We kept Maya in the stall near her because she is very attached to her and gets upset when Maya is away from her. It was to keep her as calm as possible. :-)
Why not move the other horse out of the way and then move the horse so you can work on both sides ?
😭😭😭
I want to know how long that lasted on emilys leg??
It stayed on until it needed to be changed again :)
Damn snizzle 😡. And yes, moving Emily away from the wall was key there. Next time, start there! 😏
You will want to x ray that in case of a chip. I had surgeries and leg wrapping for 5 years on a cut like that. Staph and proud flesh was the enemy.
One thing I would have done would have been to tie up the tail so the hair was not just one more factor in the way.
I don’t understand why you didn’t turn her around so the injured leg was next to the humans instead of the wall. It is always awkward to reach under a horse to try to wrap a leg or do something similar.
