I would add a large scarf too, useful for covering up when visiting religious sites, cool evenings and bathing suit cover.
That’s a great suggestion! Scarves aren’t my style (I prefer cardigans and we don’t spend time at the beach), but they can be very handy! Many travelers use them too so that’s a great tip! 😊
Absolutely. Would never travel without a big scarf/sarong. Use as a blanket, skirt, dress, towel, cover up etc. So versatile.
@@kayelle8005 can you recommend a particular brand?
@@liorajacob8094 less about the brand and more about the size and the material. Go for either organic cotton, bamboo, or a silk. Something breathable and natural. Size is important. Go for a large square or rectangle. Have a look at Trinny’s channel and you’ll see her wear a scarf as a sarong in lots of videos. That’s the size you want.
Such a great suggestion!!!
According to Hitch Hiker’s Guide to the Universe, Alison’s large scarf idea is essential. It can double as a towel, shade tarp, extra carry bag, pillow, privacy screen, extra dress or skirt, weapon esp when wet and twisted and so much more.
I love your reference 😂 We traveled for 1.5 years straight in 2016-2017 and I packed a scarf, but I maybe used it 5 times. I'm not a scarf girl, but they really are one of the most versatile items to pack!
@@AplinsintheAlps I don’t do scarves either, but I do carry a cotton bandana or two with me while traveling.
Love my large scarf even acts as a bandage or sling or handbag strap !! You could even cut off strips for a belt or other emergencies
Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (Sorry. My book obsession couldn’t let that pass), but I love the reference. A large scarf is the perfect substitute for a towel. LOL.
A weapon? Genius
We are in our 70's. We've gone on 10 day cruises with just a carry-on each and a small tote bag each. We have meds and other supplies. Never take what you can't
manage. We see people with enough luggage to spend a semester in Europe. I pack extra plastic bags, too. Tina, Al's wife
Way to go! We agree that you should only pack what you can reasonably carry (although we understand that some people have unique needs/special items to bring along). Keep up the carry on packing 😊
I'm 64 years old with experience traveling around the world solo since my teens. Like you, I'm a minimalist using only a photo backpack and rollaway which has my travel tripod plus all the other stuff. The strip laundry soap and collapsible containers are cool. The only things I would add to your well-defined list are a reusable bamboo cutlery kit and a silk "cocoon" sheet. Thanx for a great vid! BTW, I wanted to talk about the "weight limit". People pack wayyyyy too much stuff! I've NEVER EVER been over the weight limit in any country on any airline. Wear the heaviest stuff; layer if you have to. (Country count: 50)
Very cool! I hope you like those laundry sheets and containers too! And your cutlery is a great idea (I usually snag some plastic ones while we travel, but I love the reusable idea!)
Yes!! Silk cocoon! So useful especially when you can't trust the cleanliness of the sheets at stopover areas or train bunks etc.
You mentioned a travel tripod. Do you travel with carry-on only or is the suitcase with tripod checked in? If you have it in carry-on, have you ever had issues? Cause I would love to bring mine (or buy one that isn’t problematic) and travel without checked-in baggage but I am afraid that my tripod won’t be allowed…
would love to know about your experiences :)
I don’t really get why you would waste space with items one can easily buy in Europe… just buy seasoning or those stripes in when you there
@@localabsurdist6661 I don't buy those things. Perhaps your comment should be to the general population instead of directly to me. But even if I did, 1 little can of seasonings or wash strips would weigh only ounces and take up less room than a pair of panties.
Our family of 3 went to Italy a few years ago & stayed in a hotel. Instead of trying to pack enough toiletries we just went to the pharmacia & bought what we needed for 2 wks. We also did laundry in Italy & just bought our soap from the vending machine at the laundry mat.
That's a great tip! We buy full sized bottles of shampoo when we're staying somewhere for a few weeks. And our Airbnbs typically include a washing machine but laundry mats are always a good option too!
My sister taught me how to travel light many years ago when we spent a summer touring Europe (1966 and again in 1968). It is a lesson I've never forgotten!
What fun memories and experiences! 😊
Here's a pro tip, merino wool socks and underwear. You can wear them for like 3 days and they don't stink because they're antimicrobial. I mean, most people probably wouldn't want to wear underwear for 3 days but if you're in a pinch or you're hiking, it's very helpful. Just wash them in a sink, and they air dry super fast. Merino wool is very soft, very breathable, but it also keeps you very warm in the winter.
We used to wear a lot of merino wool clothing in our early travels (2016). Some of our socks are merino wool, and ultra breathable! Like you, we definitely recommend them to other travelers!
Agree so much. I just came home from a travel and 5 out of my 18 pieces of clothing were thin merino wool (of which 4 were underwear, and 3 were thin tights).
I dont have any merino underwear. Hmm, I am going to get me some! I LOVE travelling with cabin luggage only.
The freedom both in terms of not being apart from you luggage, and in not hauling many superfluous things around, is addicting. ❤
Merino shirts are practically the only shirt I wear anymore. They’re great for traveling because you can wear them for several days so you don’t have to pack as many. Also they’re very easy to wash in a sink and will dry quickly on a hanger. Plus they come in different weights (thickness) so you can pack according to anticipated temperatures.
I tend to be an over packer but want to learn how to become more of a minimalist and travel only with a carry-on. This is easily one of the best packing videos I’ve seen! Concise and you get straight to the point. I appreciate it.
We're so glad this video helped you essentialize what you take with you when you travel! Thanks so much for taking the time to let us know it helped you!
Ditto!
Jana, those collapsible storage containers are a LIFE SAFER! 🥳 When I go through airports I like to get salads at the Farmer's Fridge and they are often out of takeout boxes which makes it nearly impossible to eat the salad. I can fit one of the Farmer's Fridge salads in the 40oz containers you recommend perfectly, and it was so much easier to eat out of than the usual cardboard takeout boxes. THANK YOU! 🙏
So fun to hear that you share in my love for the collapsible containers!
For travelling, I have a little "just in case"-pouch. Over the years, I have started to add things that I would have needed at some point. Some of the things it contains: Headtorch, bottle opener, rubber bands, a tiny pair of scissors, a couple of clothespins, a pencil sharpener, sellotape, gluestick, a little lint roller, an emergency tampon, a nightlight (I hate sleeping in rooms that are pitch-black, especially if I don't know them), a multiple plug, a tiny tripod, folded plastic bags, a mini-screwdriver, and also two of the things you mentioned: spices and a sewing kit.
I used to have a lighter, but it got confiscated at one airport. Interestingly, I once had a small Swiss pocket knife in the pouch, because I had forgotten to take it out after a non-flying trip. I flew handluggage only from Spain to Germany, and it remained unnoticed. On the way back, at the German control point, they made me take it out and measured the blade. It was short enough to be allowed on the plane, which I found a bit strange.
About the collapsible containers: I have one of these, and I'm not one hundred percent convinced. Because they are not rigid, they easily get crushed in a bag when containing food. I once used them for "empanadas" which didn't look their best when I finally got to eat them. With liquid food, I'm always worried that the little cap of the microwave hole might pop out and food will spill out.
Very interesting! That sounds like a pretty full pouch, but I love how you add things as you need them! We do keep a bottle opener and headlamp in our tech bag (which Brett carries so it wasn’t featured here in this video).
And the containers have been absolutely wonderful so far! But we don’t put liquids in them (I don’t trust those lids for liquids) and we haven’t had a problem with them getting compressed because the seal actually makes it so they can’t compress easily while the lid is on (so you pretty much have to take the lid off to collapse them, which makes sense).
No! Poor empanadas! How could you! Regards from Argentina :D
I also have a zipper bag like this: it’s my junk drawer. (Every house/suitcase needs one!)
One year I left a tiny roll of transparent tape in a backpack and it ended up being so helpful...for sticking notes up for friends, fixing torn papers/documents....I always keep it in there now.
Ooo what a useful item!!! Now I may need to squeeze in some tape, ha!
To take up less space, consider taking one of the tape refills for those wear-on-your-wrist tape dispensers; it's only about 1/2x1x1/4" and gives you dozens of pieces of tape
Great video! Another tip is to take a photo of what you take, and another when you get back of only the things you found essential , and the clothes you wore all the time. That helps to prune what you take next time. I love traveling with a carry on, especially if you are staying in several different spots, it makes unpacking and packing really quick every time you move to new accommodation
Great tip! Since we've spent more than 3 years traveling, we've done something similar. So glad you also love traveling carry on!
I have just done a 2 week beach vacation Carey on only . It was amazing . I did not have to worry about lost luggage I knew I had everything with me . I even managed to pack a packable beach tent and still had room to spare . I just had to do some washing in the sink every now and then and I actually had lots of space for the shopping I did while traveling . I am never going back to checked in luggage :) thank you for the tips
Fantastic, sounds like you definitely understand the benefits of carry-on only!
I have a good amount of travel experience and love watching "how to pack" videos. Usually I have maaaaany opinions but I have to say this one is by far one of my favorites specially because I find it very real and very on point!!! I usually stay at hostels so I might add on my list a travel towel and flip flop sandals.
Wow, that’s a big compliment, thank you so much! A towel and flip flops would be a perfect addition for hostel stays. We usually stay in Airbnb which is why I don’t include those in my bag. But that’s the beauty of personalizing your packing list!! 😊
It’s not a travel hack but a space safer when packing an extra pair of sneakers you can put some socks in the sneakers to save space.
Yes! Flip-flops or sandals are a must.
Brilliant tips thank you, even though I usually travel for just one week with a carry on. My favourite tip, one I hadn’t considered, was a packable backpack. That will be so useful now I need hands free for a walking stick.
Fantastic! We hope you enjoy that packable day pack as much as we do! 😊
Thank you for normalizing cloth pads. I agree with you. They are so easy to travel with. Cups are as well, for those willing to try them.
Honestly, the cloth pads are just so comfortable and breathable and sustainable!
Agreed! I appreciated this so much!
She shouldn’t give disclaimers for the men they should hear as well
@@roxywyndham My thoughts exactly!
Yes definitely cups too and period underwear
We are planning a vacation overseas and I am such an over packer. I am thankful for this video so I can really try to not take too much clothes and shoes. I am practicing this year on vacation
I love that you’re eager to pack carry on only! We believe you can do it! 😊
Yes!! Cloth pads are so awesome! Lots of people recommend cups, but cloth pads are my jam!
Yes, then you totally relate to how comfortable they are!! (To be fair, I haven’t tried a cup because my flow isn’t heavy enough.)
Many thanks recommending packing cubes. I wasn’t sure they’d be helpful but they are amazing! I love how neat and compact my carry-on is now. Thank you!!
one aspect i think overlooked was the total weight. many airlines now imposed weight limit on carry on luggage which normally 7kg especially for budget airlines and slightly more for full service airlines, and many also literary will weigh your luggage before allowed in. for this video it looks more than 7kg tho..
Wonderful.
I agree with everything except for shopping bags and spices.
Yes, you have to pay for them, but they're very cheap and not worth taking with and then having to worry about not losing or tearing them.
And you can get great spices all over Europe for very good prices.
The only things you can't get are specific blends like Lawrys, Bay seasoning, etc. But countries in Europe have some nice blends of their own.
Thanks! We still find it practical to pack shopping bags and use them until they need to be replaced. And sometimes we buy spices in Europe, but we still carry them with us for convenience too!
@@AplinsintheAlps many places have bags that fold into a wallet size for pocket or purse. I got mine at IKEA >5 years ago and they are great, ripstop and easy to wash in the sink. At Ikea, they are about a dollar. They're easy to make too, if you sew.
I understand that they are traveling many many places and don’t want to constantly buy Spices. Makes since for their extensive travel but for those of us going 1 -3 places only, probably not so much.
I love her positive atmosphere. And the laundry sheets! This is so useful and I didn't even think about it. However, I'm with the other people who said the absorbent part didn't need any disclaimer as guys should totally know much about periods and not consider them something horrific and odd.
Thanks for the videos!
Thank you for your compliments! Those laundry sheets are perfect for travel! (In fact, I just used one this morning!)
Guys should be able to handle it but most can't. Dang, I'm a woman and I get grossed out talking about it! 😂🤮
You don't wash them by themselves? It seemed you washed the used pads with the rest of your clothes. Maybe I misheard? I hope I misheard!
@@almaortega9261 From a health/sanitary standpoint, there is nothing unsafe about washing a reusable fabric pad with the rest of your laundry. I wouldn't necessarily add them to a load of whites, but it's time we got over being squeamish about such things.
Now, if you're talking clothing with feces on it, like your kid had an accident, then you would want to wash those items separately.
I just started using laundry sheets and the idea of using them for travel hadn’t crossed my mind yet but it’s a great idea
GREAT video! So helpful. We are planning a 3 week trip and the insights in this video are on point!
Thank You!!!
Thank you so much! So glad you found it helpful! Where will you be traveling for 3 weeks?
I made a small laundry kit in its own bag with cord, 20 wooden clothes pins, 2 S hooks, soap like yours, and a sink stopper. Easy to wash out a few things as needed. It’s smaller than you think. Cuts down trips to the laundromat. I also use my thermal undies as PJs during multi season travel. And an inflatable pillow for anytime you need it. And now I take 2 Covid tests just in case. Thanks for all this. I’m heading into a 2 month trip and want to pare down even more.
A very well done video! ....and I’ve watched a lot of them .
I also take the laundry sheets, saves a ton of space!
I must have a look for the collapsible containers.
I just got carryon-only down to a fine art when “the plague” came along.☹️
But....off to Italy in the Fall! Yay!
Woot Woot for your trip to Italy! 🥳
Aren’t those laundry sheets amazing! We used to bring powder but these are way better.
There’s a link to those containers in our video description and on our blog!
If you’ve done carry-on before then you can definitely do it again 😊🇮🇹
Besides this video which do you recommend? I will be in a foreign country for two weeks and need all the info I can get.
I just bought the Travelon anti-theft crossbody bag for my upcoming trip. Thanks for the recommendation!
I’m so glad you bought that purse! I hope you love it as much as I do 🙂 We’re so excited for your family’s big trip!!
My sewing kit was taken away due to the scissors but it wasn't an expensive kit so I just bought a little one when I was over there. I really appreciate the tips you have given. I just did 2wks with only a carry on but stayed in one place, so it was easy to get to the laundromat as I only needed to wash once. I say you can always tell a seasoned traveler because their luggage gets smaller and smaller every trip.
Love this!!! So helpful and fun to watch your enthusiasm about your love for travel! Way to be efficient! Safe travels
Aww you are so kind 😊 Thank you so much!!
Wow and I thought I did a great job of packing light but still having everything. I learned something new today.
We love learning new things, and definitely encourage everyone to personalize this packing list to their personal fashion style and travel experiences! :)
Great video! Good tips, not too long, and nice to see your actual items packed and unpacked. Thanks!
Thank you! So glad you found it helpful and practical! After all, that’s literally what’s in my bag right now for the next few months! 👍
@@AplinsintheAlps Happy Travels! : - )
I’m planning a trip to Israel and I have watched a ton of these packing videos. Your video is hands down the best one!!! Thank you so much. I am downloading the packing list, too.
We definitely want to visit Israel one day, so have an awesome trip! So glad we could help you pack and prepare 😊
@@AplinsintheAlps It's called Palestine*
We’d love to visit Palestine too!
Hands down the most helpful video I've ever watched!
Aww you’re so nice!! Thank you!! 😊
Those laundry sheets are amazing! I normally bring powdered detergent but those look even better 🤩
Or a bar of soap from Walmart will do the job without being harsh on your hands
We used to do that too, but these are a lot more convenient!
And we’ve definitely used soap before in a pinch, but these sheets have actually been pretty gentle on my skin when I’ve had to hand wash. Not sure what’s in them though…I should look at the label 🙃
Great list! We always take a sink plug, baby sterilising tablets & disposable cloths too. Dissolve a tablet in some hot water & wipe down *everything others will have touched. The majority of places are super clean but theres always a possibility somewhere has been accidentally missed.
That's an interesting item to pack! We've found that almost all of our Airbnbs have cleaning supplies, so we often use those to clean up. Have you had a similar experience? Otherwise dish soap is usually helpful!
Great stuff I love my Travelon Cross body bag, I have it in a couple of colors. We just did a month in Ireland/UK with just carry ons! We tried the Breeze 'foam' type detergent strips you showed. They only really work with lightly soiled clothes, they won't get stains out unfortunately. Bring a TIde stick with you for stains if you use Breeze and cross your fingers.
Wow! You pack just like me! I do the same thing when I travel anywhere! Carry-on only! Less hassles! Wonderful video! Thank you!
Awesome! It's definitely freeing to pack carry on only, isn't it? 😊
Baggu makes reusable, washable, colorful shopping bags from recycled nylon. Can be used as a shoulder bag or laundry bag too. They also make packing cubes and pouches.
That’s a great idea for a multipurpose bag! I’ll have to look into something like that for our next trip.
Great video. I have traveled to 9 countries, one of which was 14 days in Israel. I took an International carryon. I have two travel vests. One for winter is the ScottVest. The one for the other 3 seasons is the Exofficio. Both have 11 pockets configured specifically for travel. I love both of them. Most days I just wear the vest and then carry a water bottle tote, crossbody. That works well and I can swap shoulders if it gets bothersome. I have never had any problem with customs or TSA. I just tske the vest off, put it in a tote and send it thru the scanner. One very Important tip is to go up a size when buying a vest. Otherwise you won't be able to put much in the pockets and still zip it up.
Sounds like you're an expert packer too! Glad you found that vests work well for you, they are a great idea to store extra items while traveling!
For several years I travelled for work quite often. I went to Europe and Asia on business trips for up to 10 days with just my carry on suitcase. I learned the art of “mix and match” business clothes, avoiding wrinkling fabrics, and relying on hotels for occasional laundry and pressing.
One of the best videos I've ever watched on carry-on suit case tips. Thank you!
That's a huge compliment. Thank you so so much!!
Awesome video!! We travelled 3 weeks on a motorcycle with 2 bags This was back when we had to bring cd’s and a player plus a hairdryer lol. It can be done 🌻
Wow, impressive! Sounds like you’re a packing pro 👍
I agree with your essentials! We bring most of those for our long term travels. 🌺✈️ Heidi
Absolutely! Always bring the essentials and buy the non essentials once you arrive. Where do you all like to visit? Your profile pic shows a beach!
Oh wow! I gotta learn travelling light. The silk cocoon is new to me, now I'm getting one! Thank you All!
You're welcome! Happy packing:)
We travel often and I love watching packing videos. You did a great job with this one. We always travel carry-on only and bring along a small packable backpack. One thing we do bring is an empty water bottle. This came in very handy when we were just hiking in Greece.
So glad to meet another carry-on traveler! It's lifechanging! We do travel with empty water bottles like you, but I just usually carry it in my hand so I didn't even think to add that to the video!
Loved this! I’m taking a carry on for the first time to LA so I’m watching as many videos as I can to see how to pack. Just a little tip: when next you’re filming,I’ll say move a little farther back so we can fully see the suitcase too.
Have fun on your trip! We hope carry on travel is even better than you imagined 🙂 And thanks for the filming tip - it's always a balance between showing the scene and being close enough to the camera that the microphone picks up our voices well.
Have travelled carryon only for decades. I like packing small towels, light sheets and cameras so it comes down to half a carryon/person. We pack the lighter spare shoes and wear the heavier walking shoes.
We have a separate backpack for all of our tech gear, so that frees up some space in my carry on!
Amazing essential 10 products!!!! specially the washing 'foam soap'....great idea!!!!👏
Thanks Carolina! We’re so glad those 10 essentials were so helpful, especially the foam laundry soap! 😊
I have never been good at packing! I am going to Italy for 12 days, and I don't want anything but a carry-on, so it's a crash course in "packing light" for me! Thank you for sharing this!
Traveling carry on is a great/easy way to travel! Hope this video helps you "pack light":)
So cute! I love how you put this video together. I just discovered those foam laundry sheets and tried them out at home before my trip soon, and they work great. I'm with you, the non-clothes items become so much more important the longer you spend on the road. Happy travels! PS I think any person can hear about periods, blood, heavy or light flows and everything! You don't need to give a disclaimer ;)
Thanks Charlotte! That’s a fantastic tip to try them out at home before you travel. Plus, we’re glad to hear you like those laundry sheets as much as we do! 😊
I also think everyone should hear about periods
Right! It's not a secret. Half the world's population has had or will have a monthly period. Everybody should be educated on how they work.
Great video! Firm believer in small carry on luggage. It is so nice not to have to wait for the baggage carousel. People are always amazed that I still have plenty of outfits with such a small amount of clothing. Packing cubes are a lifesaver. I try to leave one side of the suitcase relatively empty for great souvenirs, especially when traveling overseas. Thanks for the great video!
We agree, it's nice to always have our stuff with us when we travel. And packing cubes are life changing! Thanks for watching :)
This is sooooo handy. I’m actually preparing for my first europe trip and I didn’t want to bring a big luggage. So glad I came across your video!
Fantastic! We're so glad to help you feel confident to travel Europe with a carry-on! We hope it's a wonderful trip! :)
BY FAR THE MOST INFORMATIVE PACKING VIDEO EVER!!!!!!!!!!
Best comment ever 🥰 Thank you! 😊
Fantastic tips. Thank you! You guys rock!
You are so welcome! 😊
Thanks for the great video! From my side I can suggest adding a hydration pack to the luggage - it's basically a plastic pouch with a tube that you can fill up with water. I found it way more convenient than bottles as they take no space when they're empty, and tap water is drinkable in most European countries, so you can just fill it up when needed instead of buying the bottled water. Very convenient for hikes too as you can put it in your backpack too, and are able to drink without using your hands or having to take of the backpack :)
Somebody already mentioned solid shampoos and conditioners, another thing I can suggest is to find cosmetics that can have multiple purposes - solid shampoo can double as a soap, a natural oil can be used as body oil, hair conditioner and make up remover.
I second the reusable menstrual products - I've been using a menstrual cup for 4 years now and it's the best purchase I've ever made!
Thanks for your great tips! We haven't tried solid shampoo yet, but it's on our list to try one day!
Thanks for sharing! I love these packing style videos! 💕
Awesome, we're so happy to share with you! 😊
Totally agree with spices - we bring sriracha and pepper flakes. And, as others have said, always a big scarf.
When you are walking and pulling luggage, turn your hand around so that the top of your hand faces the ground. Less stress on your wrist. Thanks for the packing tips.
I sensed that! 👍
Since our Away Carry On suitcases have 4 wheels, we don't even have to pull our bags, they're right by our side, so less wrist stress 🙂
Nice!
This is probably the most usable packing video I have ever watched. Even as a seasoned light traveller, I got new ideas. Thank you. I am going to bring my collapsible container from now on.
(And also, men should totally listen when it comes to pads. It is cool when men understand women's needs 🙂).
We're so glad you found this helpful, even as an experienced traveler! And those collapsible containers have been super helpful for us - we love them! We hope you do too!
I appreciate your tips so much! I have always been a chronic over-packer so I’m excited to try your tips!
Hopefully our tips will help you pack just what you need:) Happy packing!
Great video! Very smart packing!!
Thanks so much! 😊
Excellent video. I use Tru Earth laundry sheets all the time, not just for travel. They have a unscented version that is great for people with allergies like me. Absolutely zero smell or residue on my clothes. It's a great product.
Thank you! Just what I needed
Thanks Sharon! I'm going to look into the Tru Earth laundry sheets, thanks for the recommendation! I like the ones we use, but I always prefer more natural (less scented) versions.
I use Tru Earth too. I will never go back to regular detergent! If the big brands came out with a similar product that could be purchased in stores most people would switch to laundry strips. Soooo easy!
I use them to - save the planet from plastic garbage. They really work.
i never even heard of foam laundry sheet . so glad to hear about them.
Loved the seasoning in the shoe 😂 great video Jana!
Ha, I’m glad you appreciated that! Gotta squeeze stuff wherever it fits in the bag! 🙃
🤣🤣 food tastes better
Thank you so much for the travel packing checklist!! I can’t wait to travel to Europe for the first time ever this October!
How exciting! We hope you have a fantastic trip and that you can customize this list for your travel plans and fashion style!
Thank you so much for the downloadable packing list!
You are so welcome! Having just what you need can make all the difference in a trip:) Happy packing!
After 64 countries I’ll add my one most important travel secret. Do not use a suitcase. Use a clamshell backpack. A 40 liter pack has last me for 12 months on an Africa trip. It’s much easier to get around with a backpack whether traveling Europe, Africa, India, China, wherever.
Thanks for sharing! We used to carry backpacks too, but since we’ve slowed down (staying a few weeks in each place), suitcases are easier for us (and our backs). But if we were going to places/more quickly, a backpack is convenient!
I have a tangle teaser hair brush I take for traveling! It has a lid that snaps shut and protects the bristles. It’s also very compact (it’s a brush with no handle). I highly recommend it.
Oh my goodness, that sounds amazing Gaby! Thanks for the recommendation, I’m going to look it up right now! 😁(This sounds like the perfect brush for travel and I can’t believe I haven’t heard of it before!)
I love them too! it doesn't break your hair when it's wet, I used to use a wide tooth comb and then a brush but this does double duty and it's nice and small :)
What a great and comprehensive video on this topic. Thank you!
Thank you! We're so happy to help 😊 Happy travels!
Thank you for the tips! Very helpful!
So glad they were helpful!
Great video. Very helpful. One thing I bring when I travel with only a carry on is solid shampoo and conditioner bars. One less liquid I need to worry about on flights. Thanks for the great video and packing list!
What brand of shampoo/conditioner bars do you use? We've been wanting to try them out but don't know which brand to try first!
@@AplinsintheAlps The first one I tried was The Shower Bar - but I haven’t been able to find it lately. I’ve also tried superzero, which has been good. I’ve been curious to try Ethique as well.
@@kerithh Thanks for your advice! We may have to try superzero first! I’m so curious if we will like it.
Just buy a big bottle of baby shampoo at your destination. It will wash both your laundry and you. It is so cheap that you can leave it behind for the next person and you do not have the problem with liquids on the flight home.
This video was so well done!!! Really glad I just found you guys' channel - can't wait to follow along on your adventures! 😀
Thanks for your compliments! We’re glad it was helpful and we’re so grateful to have you following along! 😊Do you have any vacations planned for this summer?
@@AplinsintheAlps I sure do!!! I make travel videos on RUclips as well, and I LOVE watching packing videos to give me new ideas to prepare for various trips (and reinforce my own packing strategies). And that's why I was so glad to find your channel! You can tell how much work, expertise, and passion you guys put into this video, and it turned out great!
Well we will have to browse your videos too!
I’m curious, which items reinforced your own packing strategy, and which items do you think we missed (minus tech stuff)?
You are so so so kind, thank you for your sweet compliments! We do put a lot of love and work into our channel because we want others to see Europe and learn how to travel Europe on a budget. As you know, travel is life changing! 🥰
@@AplinsintheAlps the laundry sheets are definitely an alternative I'm gonna try someday. Lately I've been bringing a tiny 2oz bottle of Woolite to use in a sink or a machine, but I hate that it's a liquid. And I totally understand bringing extra spices or buying them there - it really does help. Even if it's just onion and garlic powder. My trips are usually shorter than yours, so I don't want to comment on anything you missed, because if it works for you, then it's perfect and that's what you should bring! :) :)
This was so helpful!! Thank you so much for sharing! 😊
Glad it was helpful!!
Awesome video, one of the best I’ve seen !!! Love the packing list, thank you
Awww you are so kind! Thank you so much Lynn!
Im 60 + this chanel is helpful for my plan to travel to Asia next year.
Wonderful! So glad we can help 😊
A must is a Boom Shanker two way skirt. I have 3 of them but travel with 1. That means I have 2 skirts in one 😊 Different designs on each side - 2 skirts in 1 😉
Sounds super practical!
Wow! You nailed it! I thought I was good at packing light, but I certainly will be using your list for my next trip away. Thank you 🌹
You're so kind, thank you! I've had years of practice, but I bet you're pretty good at it too!
Good tips and very helpful. Thanks!
Thank you! Happy to help!! 🙂
I'm getting ready to go to Italy in a few days and I really wanted to avoid checking any bags. This video was super helpful! I just downloaded your packing list too! :)
Hi Amy! First of all, have a great time in Italy! Where will you be going?
And I’m so glad that our packing list and video are helping you travel carry-on only! We totally believe in you and know it will make your trip so much easier. 😊😊😊Thanks for watching and happy travels!
I'm here now.. :)
Lucky you, Andrew! Enjoy Italy! 😊
Both laundry sheets and bringing your own bag to the grocery store is also awesome in the US! It reduces your plastic waste by a lot!
You're absolutely right! We pretty much pack this way no matter where we visit, US or Europe 😊
As of January 1, 2023 requires you to pay for plastic bags. I don't know why people disagree with it though lol.
great video!!! we often travel with just carry ons, though i usually have a roller bag plus backpack. The backpack is for meds, both prescription and those "just in case" ones that i never travel without.
Wonderful video. Extremely helpful. Many thanks!
Thank you Susan! I'm so glad you found it helpful. Hopefully it will help you pack carry-on for your future trips!
I live out of a 40L Carry on bag fulltime. I live full time travel, no base anymore... Thanks for sharing the video.
That is awesome! Enjoy your life of full-time, carry-on only travel!
@@AplinsintheAlps Thank you!
I have a small plastic box, bag would work just as well, where I included the following: eye glass repair kit, nail clippers, small foldable scissors, nail file, Bobby pins, tweezers, bottle opener and cork screw, medium size clip, etc…. These things come in handy often. Sure makes things easier.
Helpful tips! I didn't show it in the video, but I stash nail clippers and tweezers in my makeup bag too.
I used to travel with my Swiss army knife right on my person! Cork screw, little scissors, etc. Gave haircuts with the scissors. I don't think they are allowed as part of your carry on anymore 😕
Love these ideas! Great advice 🤗
Thank you so much! Glad you found this helpful 😊😊
Add: menstrual cup, a sarong or large scarf and a couple of meters of fishing line or string. The string can be used for a clothes line or with the sarong to make a privacy screen.
I buy a reusable grocery bag on the trip, it is a good souvenir. Got a wonderful bag a Carcassone, with the castle on it, have used it for 10 years at home. Got a cute bag from Emart in S.Korea.
That’s the beauty of packing - you can personalize it! I don’t wear scarves (not my personal fashion style) but many travelers find them perfect. You’re right about the string for a clothes line - we have some in our tech bag. 😊
You have to pay for plastic bags in Canada too (or at least in Ontario), and some provinces have banned them altogether. Brining totes with you is s good idea. The goal is to ban them entirely in the country.
Another suggestion: ladies can also use menstrual cups. Apparently, they make life easier too.
That’s good to know that Canada has encouraged reusable grocery bags too!
I know many friends who use a cup and recommend it as well, so great suggestion!
@@AplinsintheAlps I was just stopping the video to recommend a cup! LOVING your tips so far, Thanks!
Awesome Eliza! A lot of people have recommend the cup in the comments!
I also travel for months at a time with my Away Carry-on (US size)
We were skeptical at first but now we are SOLD on these bags! It’s incredible how much you can fit in that suitcase, right?!?
The laundry sheets is something that never crossed my mind! Thank you for sharing. 🙂
Those are one of our favorite travel hacks because they are so so so handy! Hopefully you enjoy them too :)
Great list! All the stuff I pack, but organized and more compact. I might try just the carry-on next time I travel. I always seem to pack more stuff than I truly need.
It's hard to pack light, but I believe you can do it! It already sounds like you're close :)
Use a disposable shower cap for your shoes. It takes up less space and i can get sneakers and sandles in 1 shower cap.
We've tried those in the past, but after a few months in our suitcase the elastic gives out and doesn't cling to our shoes. Do you have a brand you recommend? (We just used the free ones from hotels)
Saving this video, it has some nice suggestions like the soap! Never knew that existed.
From my travel experience, I've invested a lot in a "travel jacket", which basically is a lightweight jacket with a lot of compartments and rain protection. If I ever have problems with weight or too much stuff. I just start unloading them in my jacket and move through the airport. It even has enough space for a tablet/laptop!
At the gate I put everything back in the bag. Sometimes you just have someone at the desk who wants to make a point :)
Also a thing I did, is invest in quick dry clothes. So I tend to only have 3 pairs / sets of clothing which can be easily hand washed and dried in a single evening. Only thing to be mindful of is 1 formal like set, just in case you want to go somewhere which has stricter dress codes (restaurants or certain venues).
Interesting comment about the travel jacket! We’ve never had a problem with weight (and never had our bags weighed, although they have been measured), but that’s a good solution. And we used to travel with quick dry clothes but most are not our personal fashion styled so we’ve found alternatives that naturally dry efficiently! For example, I have basic tanks from Old Navy and Brett wears basic V necks from H&M, all of which typically dry pretty quickly! So we suggest you find what works for you, and it sounds like you have! 👍
Wonderful video! So helpful! Lots of new tips and tricks for my next trip!
Fantastic! Happy to help!! 😊
I found having a couple of largish ziplock bags super handy too. For things like smelly socks(travelled with a teen boy😂) and damp washing.
Good suggestions. I try to take patterned tops rather than plain so the creases are less obvious. I roll clothes rather than fold, having read seasoned traveller Lucia van der Post's packing advice.
Good tip about patterned tops, as long as they match layers! And we also roll clothes too save more space👍
How to pack are one of my favorites videos on youtube and I loved yours! But it surprised me when u said zip bags are hard to find in Europe ' cause we do have it in my country (Spain) and I know other european countries where you can find the bags at almost every supermarket
So glad you enjoyed our packing video! 😊
When we first started traveling years ago, zip bags were really hard to find and quite expensive. However we have noticed that they are more common in the stores now!
Ooo where do you live in Spain?!?
I was surprised, too. I do extended trips in Spain, Portugal, and France and I just buy laundry detergent, household items and groceries when I get there. I pack personal care and beauty items because I already own them and usually need to use some them before I have a chance to shop. I plan to do an extended trip to the UK and plan to use the same strategy.
This video was amazing! My husband and I are planning our first trip to Italy next year, and I've been going through all of your videos like hotcakes! We're wanting to only pack in carryons, but I'm a chronic over packer, so I was afraid it wouldn't be possible. After watching this video, I feel like it's TOTALLY possible for us! The laundry sheets blew my mind; I had NO idea those existed. Thanks for creating such incredible content! It almost feels like you both have become my friends! 😂
Aww you are so sweet! First of all, have a blast in Italy!! You can totally pack carry on, I believe in you :) Just stick with a few outfits and plan to do laundry. Those laundry sheets may be my best tip ever, haha. Maybe one day we can meet in real life!
@@AplinsintheAlps I’m feeling more confident already! I’m an overly detailed person and couldn’t imagine how I can do a full month in the UK without packing so much.
I’ve never gone anywhere by myself so this is a big deal. I’m going to meet in person my 12 year long penpal and video sharing friend.
Yet traveling alone is scary.
I had determined to take carry-on only and your video has taught me how to do it. Thank you so much.
Great video. Amazing idea about the soap strips. I didn’t know they were a thing.
They have completely changed the way we do laundry on the go!
Period knickers, there a big thing in Europe. I always carry my heavy / bulky / jacket / coat.
I also bring a big canvas tote bag or just a big bag it's usually empty going but full coming back home I really like to shop buy something from other countries that I'm in.
I love my fabric daily pads! They’re so much more comfy. And that big tote bag is a good idea, that’s what I use the packable backpack for!
Great video. I love the laundry sheets. I had been looking for some to take with us on our trip out west this fall. What do you use as your personal item. I was going to take a back pack, but I love the idea of the one you have. Maybe I could actually take my camera bag now and get the back pack you have for when we get there.
Those laundry sheets are pretty incredible, and so convenient!
I only fly with my Away carry-on suitcase and my mini Travelon purse. I don’t have a personal item (although sometimes I carry a few small souvenirs in the packable daypack on our flight home). Since we travel for 4-6 months at a time, we try to pack light!
The packable daypack could be an excellent option for your trip out west! Where will you be visiting?
@@AplinsintheAlps Glacier, Yellowstone and Grand Tetons.
That will be a wonderful trip! Enjoy the west!!😁
I've used a backpack as a personal item and the carry on rolling case as my main suitcase. I packed for 10 days in Germany that way in 2019 during the summer.
Thanks for sharing. Nice video
Super impressive! Chuck in a light wrap, can use as a towel, wrap, top, skirt, scarf, whatever you like!
Thank you!
