  • Riders, welcome back to Sam's Bikes where we only talk ebikes. Sam's Bikes is conducting the largest electric mountain bike motor test on RUclips for the next six weeks.
We will be conducting a comprehensive test on seven of the best e-bike motors that will be available in 2024. These motors include the Specialized Turbo System that uses the Brose S-MAG motor, which produces 90 Nm of torque, the Bosch CX Race Motor with 85 Nm of torque, Shimano EP801, which also produces 85 Nm of torque, the Giant Syncdrive Pro System that uses the Yamaha PW-X3 producing 85 Nm of torque, the Bafang M510 that produces 95 Nm of torque, and finally, the Rocky Mountain Dyname 4.0 which has a torque of 108 Nm.

Well done trying to do this test.....noise levels (db) and pitch/frequency are complex things to measure subjectively but I think what you demonstrated was that none of these motors create enough noise to discount them for any bike purchase. The frame material and design certainly makes a big difference ( as you pointed out) and in my experience the kinematic of the rear triangle/shock tune also make a big difference when freewheeling downhill.

Tests should have been recorded in a laboratory on an artificially decelerating test stand. Maybe do a coop with some speaker test guy from the Hifi community. they can also show you the differences in noise frequencies! Cheers

Hi bro, I think the motor sound issue is very exaggerated, before I bought my top of the line Pivot AM I watched a lot of videos including your channel, I was very worried that I would be annoyed by any sound, but in fact when slowly rolling down a forest track or trail I never once noticed it. Thanks for your work, likes and respect. (and yes I bought the Quadlock it's just a blessing not having to take my phone out of my pocket to find the trail, thank you). Tell me what kind of glasses you have? :)

Excellent video I wish I saw before buying a new bike with the Bosch SX. Grizl:ON from Canyon bought without a test ride.
I have several generations of Brose motors on 3 specialized bikes. Vado and 2016 Levo Fat are near silent in all modes and cadence.
The 2019 Levo Carbon comp is rather whiney on the uphill but only when it is really quiet. Now for the biggest disappointment - my new Canyon Grizl:ON with the Bosch SX motor. Like the power but the whine at higher cadence while climbing is obnoxious. Thinking it was a deal breaker but could not find another bike with the power and torque that the SX delivers.
    And the clunking is real.
Also when cadence is not putting lots of pressure on the pedals then the engagement of the SX motor is sloppy and "clunky".

I have a Canyon Grail:ON gravel bike w the Bosch PerformanceLine Speed motor and have a similar experience. Not sure I would have bought it if I knew how noisy, whiny it is, especially on hills at higher cadences. I love the bike and feel itself but the noise is just so distracting, I thought maybe there was something wrong with it at first. My wife has a Ride1Up Prodigy V2 with a Brose motor. Literally cannot tell when she has it on in any mode when riding next to her, (with mine turned off), unless we are on a hill when it makes a very quiet hum. I would love a Canyon Strive:ON but may be looking at a Specialized Turbo Levo equivalent just bc of the motor noise.

I've had in my hands :
    - Bafang M620 (1st generation with large sprocket)
    - Bafang M620 (2nd generation with small sprocket)
    - Bafang M510
    - Bosch CX performance
    - Yamaha Syncdrive pro
Taking into account the emitted sound volume + frequencies (high or low), I rank these motors as follows:
    1st - Bosch CX performance
    2nd - Bafang M510
    3rd - Yamaha Syncdrive pro
    4th - Bafang M620 (2nd generation with small sprocket)
    5th - Bafang M620 (1st generation with large sprocket)
I'm really torn between putting the Bafang M510 in the 1st position and the Bosch CX in the 2nd position... they are very similar.
I find that noises with low and non-constant frequencies (which fluctuate in frequencies and volume) are the most unbearable. The M620 1st gen is horrible, never buy it! The M620 2nd gen will always be at the bottom of the ranking, but it can be tolerable if you're not looking for silent rides.

For those of us for whom noise really matters on a bike this was a really interesting video and I'll definitely bookmark it for when i choose my next EMTB.
I have a Bosch CX (non race) bike and a Brose Levo and i have to say i couldn't agree more. The CX is a fantastic motor, but the Levo beats it hands down on noise uphill and down, to the point where the CX bugs me if I'm riding it straight after the Levo. After a while i tune it out a bit.

    • @cadriver2570

Most people want a quiet motor, and the motor noise is one of the biggest turn offs for these mid drive e-bikes. The manufacturers know this and have been attempting to prioritize quietness in the engineering process. CX was an absolute no-go for me on noise, especially when the Brose exists and is so quiet. Bosch has some quiet motors, but their Speed and CX are too noisy.

Shame that the Giant Reign was the 2022 model frame and motor. Slight changes in frame and motor postiioning now could have an effect on sound results. Have a 2023 Reign now as your Giant Reign video that you did using the lowest spec and doing the upgrades. Couldnt be happier. Love the Vids Sam!!! Keep them coming.

I would have mentioned if the bikes were alloy or carbon, as that makes a big difference with acoustics.
Also, an actual tool for measurement, like a db meter, or something that measures pitch/tone, there is a scientific name for it that I can't recall atm.

Another great video Sam. The Specialized is definitely the quiet one. We have a group of five ebikes, 2 Rocky Mountains, 2 Specialized Levos and a Devinci Shimano EP8 Spartan. The Devinci is by far the noisiest when we are riding up a steep trail. That Shimano motor has a higher pitch whine than the other 4. Looking forward to your range test.

I rode the Yamaha Moro 07 in Sweden a few months ago and found it to be way too punchy\jumpy for lack of a better description. I played around with the settings a lot and the auto-mode setting...forgot what they call it, but my experience on hills was it was too sluggish to start assisting in the lower power modes and too eager to launch on me from the start unexpectedly with just barely moving the pedals. It had a lot of power on the higher modes but felt like I was just being shuttled up the hills with minimal assistance as opposed to a more natural assist more as I pedal harder feel I have on my Bosch CX. That may be a plus for some people who want to basically be pushed up hard hills for downhill runs though but I prefer the feel of matching the power I put in so I still get a workout and this motor just did not give me that feel.
