  • The doctrine of justification by faith alone is essential to our understanding of the gospel itself. In this message, R.C. Sproul explains the eternal consequences of this biblical truth and demonstrates how this doctrine is as important today as it was at the time of the Protestant Reformation.

What a great reminder of the covenant of grace we all are offered to stand under in the spirit realm through Christ! Also, its almost impossible not to observe Gods hand in redemptive history (aka history) with Luther. Its difficult to underestimate the level of impact Holy Spirit chose to have through the Reformation and Luther. Amazing to think about. Praise God for it!

    1. According to the Reformers justification is once for all and is by faith alone - sanctification is separated from justification but these two are inseparable. According to the Catholic Church justification is a process that includes faith and sanctification. Which one is scriptural?
The phrase "justified by faith" appears four times in New Testament (Rom. 3:28, 5:1, Gal. 2:16, 3:24). New Testament was written in Greek and the one in Rom. 3:28 is in Greek passive present tense while the rest are in Greek passive aorist tense. Both tenses do not indicate once for all justification. If Scripture teaches faith-alone justification, then the Holy Spirit would inspire Paul to write the phrase "justified by faith" in Greek passive perfect tense. According to Scripture God saves us (or we are saved by grace) through faith (Eph. 2:8) and through sanctification (2 Th. 2:13). Salvation is therefore a process and is not by faith alone - and so is justification.
    2. According to the Reformers through (once for all) justification we are counted as righteous based on alien/external righteousness of Christ but we remain unrighteous. According to the Catholic Church through (on-going) justification we are made righteous. Which one is scriptural?
According to Rom. 5:19 through Christ we are made righteous. Why being made righteous is essential for salvation? Scripture says death is the wages of sin (Rom. 6:23) and the soul that sins shall die (Eze. 18:4). It is righteousness that delivers from death (Pro. 10:2, 11:4). “Whoever is steadfast in righteousness will live” (Pro. 11:19). “In the path of righteousness is life, and in its pathway there is no death” (Pro. 12:28). Jesus said in Mat. 25:46 that the righteous shall go to eternal life. Catholics do not believe we can become righteous by ourselves - our righteousness comes from God through Christ.
    3. According to the Reformers justification implies double imputation: Christ' righteousness is imputed on us while ALL our sins (past, present, and future) are imputed on Christ who was punished for those sins on the cross. We are righteous and sinner at the same time (in Latin simul iustus et peccator). According to the Catholic Church in justification the righteousness of God is infused in us while our sins must be washed or forgiven. Which one is scriptural?
Scripture denies double imputation in Eze. 18:20: “The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself.” According to Scripture we cannot be righteous and sinner at the same time. Eze. 33:12-13 says: “the righteous shall not be able to live by his righteousness when he sins. Though I say to the righteous that he shall surely live, yet if he trusts in his righteousness and does injustice, none of his righteous deeds shall be remembered, but in his injustice that he has done he shall die.”
    4. According to the Reformers God punished the sinless and righteous Christ because ALL sins of believers imputed on Him as He were the one who commit those sins. We enter heaven solely based on what Christ did on the cross and not on anything we do. According to the Catholic Church Christ willingly offered Himself to die for our sins, God did not punish Him for our sins. Which one is scriptural?
Pro. 17:15 says: “He who justifies the wicked and he who condemns the righteous are both alike an abomination to the LORD.” Your belief makes God condemn the righteous Christ for our sins or you made Him do abomination as stated in Pro. 21:15. Catholics believe woe enter heaven based on what Christ did on the cross AND what He does in us - He transforms us from our unrighteous state to righteous one. Who is preaching the true Gospel?

Are Catholic beliefs and practices biblical?
The question that concerns every church and its practices should be, "Is this biblical?" If a teaching is biblical (taken in context), it should be accepted. If it is not, it should be rejected. God is more interested in whether a church does His will and obeys His Word than whether it can trace its lineage back to Jesus' apostles. Jesus was very concerned about the Word of God being rejected to follow traditions of men (Mark 7:7). Traditions are not inherently wrong...there are some good and valuable traditions. To reiterate, the concern should be whether a doctrine, practice or tradition is biblical. How then does the Catholic Church compare to the Word of God?
Salvation: The Roman Catholic Church teaches that salvation is regenerated through baptism and maintained through the Catholic sacraments, except through a willful act of sin that destroys the sanctified state of grace. The Bible teaches that we are saved by grace, which we receive through simple faith (Ephesians 2:8-9), and that good works are the result of a changed heart worked out in salvation (Ephesians 2:10; I Corinthians 5:17) and through the fruit of new life in Christ (John 15).
Assurance of salvation: The Roman Catholic Church teaches that
Assurance of salvation: The Roman Catholic Church teaches that salvation is not guaranteed or certain. 1 John 5:13 says that the reason for writing 1 John was so that believers could be ASSURED of their salvation.
Good works: The Roman Catholic Church teaches that Christians are saved by meritorious works (beginning with baptism), and that salvation is maintained by good works (receiving the sacraments, confessing sins to a priest, etc.). The Bible teaches that Christians are saved by grace through faith, completely apart from works (Titus 3:5; Ephesians 2:8-9, Galatians 3:10-11; Romans 3:19-24).
Baptism: In the New Testament, baptism ALWAYS comes AFTER saving faith in Christ. Baptism is not the reason for salvation; it is faith in the gospel that saves (1 Corinthians 1:14-18; Romans 10:13-17). The Roman Catholic Church teaches the regeneration of infants through baptism, a practice never found in Scripture. The only possible reference to the baptism of infants that the Roman Catholic Church can point to is that the entire household of the jailer in Philippi was baptized, as recorded in Acts 16:33. However, the context never mentions infants. Acts 16:31 explains that salvation comes by faith. Paul addressed the whole household in verse 31, and the whole household believed (verse 34). This passage only supports the baptism of those who have already believed, not that of infants.
Prayer: The Roman Catholic Church teaches Catholics not only to pray to God, but also to petition Mary and the saints for their prayers. Contrary to this, Scripture teaches us to pray to God alone (Matthew 6:9; Luke 18:1-7).
Priesthood: The Roman Catholic Church teaches that there is a difference between priests and "commoners," where the New Testament teaches that all believers hold the priesthood (1 Peter 2:9).
Sacraments: The Roman Catholic Church teaches that a believer is filled with grace by receiving the sacraments. This teaching is nowhere to be found in Scripture.
Confession: The Roman Catholic Church teaches that, unless the believer is incapacitated, the only way to be forgiven of sins is through confession to a priest. In contrast, Scripture teaches that confession of sins is made to God alone (1 John 1:9).
Mary: The Roman Catholic Church teaches, among other things, that Mary is the Queen of Heaven, everlasting Virgin and with redeemer who ascended to heaven. In the Holy Scriptures she is portrayed as an obedient, faithful servant of God who became the mother of Jesus. None of the other attributes mentioned by the Roman Catholic Church have their basis in the Bible. The view that Mary was the co-redemptrix and is another mediator between God and man is not only extra-biblical (found only outside of Scripture), but is also unbiblical (contrary to Scripture). Acts 4:12 declares that Jesus is the only Savior. 1 Timothy 2:5 proclaims that Jesus is the only mediator between God and man.
Many other examples could be listed here. These points alone clearly identify the Catholic Church as unbiblical. Every Christian denomination has traditions and practices that are not explicitly based on the Bible. This is the reason why Scripture must be the standard for Christian belief and practice. The Word of God is always true and trustworthy. The same cannot be said about church traditions. Our guideline should be: "What does the Bible say?" (Romans 4:3; Galatians 4:30; Acts 17:10). 2 Timothy 3:16-17 proclaims, "All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly prepared for every good work.

Too many lies and misconceptions to deal with. Let's put it simply. There is a good case for the Epistle of St. James being the first N.T. scripture that was written. His main point was, "You say you have faith without works, but I through my works will show you my faith." He expounds on this and then asks, "Therefore is a man saved by faith alone?' The answer is clearly no. Think about this. The very first problem the very first Christians got wrong --- and so wrong an Apostle had to write a correction to it --- was Sola Fide - justified by faith alone. This is why Luther hated the epistle of St. James and wanted it ripped out of the bible... "the epistle of straw" Luther called it; fit to be burned.
Don't you find it ironic that the Protestants who stand against the Catholic church have sided with the errant philosophy of an apostate Catholic monk rather than with the Apostle James? I'll stick with St. James.
