I had a Ranger that ran great but after the engine was warm it wouldn't idle and stalled at every stop. Replaced many parts ( loaded the parts cannon), finally discovered that the steel EGR tube was cracked under the insulation creating a huge vacuum leak.
I had a 90 something one,,used OBD1 could not tell what flashes were. Counted and counted.nothing matched and books.threw a lot of sensers at.parted it out.
My 89 Ford 2.3 mustang does this
Murder Hornets
I suggest to turn the mirror option off in your camera settings. That way all the writing will not show backwards
I guess you could say you worked the bugs out...
Sounds like this 1961 ford van/pickup clunker l bought for $200 bucks from my county roads dept. In the late 60's. It looked like crap, sounded like crap ' but that old clunker was able to take me everywhere l needed to go. Oh yeah '
the good old day's of growing up as a teenager 😎👍🇺🇲
Them days are long gone
I would recommend changing the fuel filter as well. Judging by the bad gas it wouldn't be a bad idea.
Changing fuel filter is usually the first thing I do to a vehicle that I don't know the history of
I'd change the oil, too.
and clean whole fuel system with injectors
First I agree that it's not a bad idea to do however rarely is it ever the fuel filter these days. When cars were carbureted they ran average fuel pressure of 7PSI. Take a air hose and regulate it to 7psi and it's easy to stop the flow with your finger..... Now days average is 40psi.... Now do the same.
@@commonsenseisdeadin2024 Yeah, a lot of vehicles don't even have a fuel filter accessible, most cases it's on the pump in the tank and it's just a screen.
My first guess after finding you had no back pressure was that there was an air intake problem. At the time you hadn't mentioned that the vehicle was sitting for 3 years.
That could be part of the problem!
Reminded me of living down in Hot Springs, AR. If there was an opening, the dirt dauber wasps would make a nest. Great find!
Mice probably was the culprit of the pasta. Years ago after storing my motorcycle for the winter I started it in the spring and it sounded constricted and powerless. Good thing my garage door was open because when I cranked it up Dog Food flew 100 feet down the driveway. Damn Mice.
Vintage bikes are my thing. Dog food is the 2nd most common Spring problem in Michigan. Mouse nest in the airbox is first.
Another great video. Wow mud dobbers in the engine. That's another crazy find. Great job !
There's nothing like logical thinking, good research, and well over 40 years of experience! You are about as important in today's world, as having a great doctor, and a great lawyer! We all need knowledgeable Auto Technicians, to keep us moving, SAFELY! Thanks, KENNY! 👏👏👏
So they must have had the intake hose off for that to happen. Unless they didn’t have a filter in the box.
Nothing like having BUGS carry a ton of dirt right into your motor.
@@michaelszczys8316 My aunt had something similar in her car. She had been in the hospital. I went to the house to check on things. Car was looking pretty sad. So I took it for a ride. Before doing so. I checked everything. There were mud dauber nests all over and under car. Gas cap door and in the air intake before the filter. Few others under the hood as well.
So just like the first giant tube computer that had a moth short out a contact, "its got a bug in it"!
The best discovery to date! Dirt dobbers are a thing in Texas too. 👍
I hope you took a still picture of that blockage to put on your shop wall and another one to give to the owner. That was unbelievable! Dirt daubers are notorious for finding every opening everywhere. I learned about them when I lived down south in Arkansas. Great story for you and Mo... lol.
great video and diagnosis. sometimes it's the simplest things. great alternative options to checking and testing. good job I liked and subscribed
Hi Moe …! This is one for the record books .. I like the test road …my girlfriends Ford had a fresh air door stuck on heat in the air cleaner box … and was running hot air .. it would stumble and spit … I’m impressed you went through all the various possibilities to find the problem
This happened to me I tried everything , new motor mounts , fuel cleaner , new alternator, new o2 sensor. Finally it was my ignition coils were bad. Cars having power again & not shaking when idling hope I can help someone
Hi I have a problem I have a 2020 ford ranger and just bought it, and the problem is there is no acceleration the rpm doesn't go to 2 even tho I'm pressing the gas panel to the maximum what should I do, everything working fine
@@garallahali3204 go to AutoZone get a diagnosis w that problem it could be many things causin it. Check ignition coils & spark plugs
@@garallahali3204 check the catalytic converter. I wouldn’t think it would be bad on such a new car but it’s possible depending upon mileage….and dirt dobbers.
@@garallahali3204 Did you ever get it figured out?
My 2014 charger shakes when idling and loses power and when I turn it off and back on it works fine for a little while and does it again what do u think?
I’ve seem mufflers full of dog food before. Rattle and the most awful smell.
Is the mud dauber oem or after market part? I’m having trouble finding the part online
A rodent probably filled that muffler with oasta
Had mice fill up the mufler on a 74 crew cab with wheat. It idled but touch the gas and it would die. Started it up and got out and noticed steam coming out of exhaust , cut pipe, perfect
Old mechanic show me a muffle. He was in his 70s and said only seen it twice in his life. A plate inside muffle broke off. And from time to time the plate blow up and block the exhaust. Car would die and would not start. After a whole the plate would fall down and car would run fine, could b weeks in-between in happening. He said he heard the noise on it falling. I faith sound. He cut open the muffle and show me. Unbelievable. Mate purchase car cheap because it had the same problem. He would not believe wot problem was. Anyway it was so annoying that he sold it cheap to other friend. I told him to chage muffle and he b ad sweet car. Other mate was piss off.
One of the most ' hair pulling ' exotic troubleshooting times I had was I put a new engine in sister's car , hooked everything up, and it would start but only do very slow idle. Any more throttle and it would just quit. I finally came to realization the previous motor blew a lot of oil which plugged converter with crud, then it sat a few months and crud turned to cement. I disconnected exhaust and it ran like hell.
Catalytic converters were still rather young in my world so I didn't think of it.
Another head scratcher was a 100hp engine running about 10 - 20 hp and absolutely no codes. I checked everything, fuel pressure, air sensors, exhaust, everything.
It turned out the engine went backward a couple turns which made the cam belt jump over three teeth.
The cam was like three teeth advanced and car did not have cam position sensor. I think if it went one more it would have been damaging.
It really messes with your head when it runs so bad but doesn't say a single thing in codes.
All this emissions crap is going to be the death of the ICE. But that's what the enviro-nazis want
I like your videos. Informative with no BS.
You didn't show the air filter...?
Mud-wasps, or other critters have to go through the air filter first.
Air filter is the quickest, easiest thing to check.
As for the clutch pedal sticking,,, could be the slave/master cylinder, but,,,, it's the pressure plate springs, that force those back...
Sitting 3yrs,,, could be rust, or ???, that is keeping the T/O bearing, from sliding back into position....check bellhousing for mud wasp nest...lol😁☕
I have seen them make a nest on top of a piston. I had a 4 cyclinder motorcycle that I thought had dropped a valve. I pulled the head off, and they had made a nest on the piston in the intake valve relief. I was shocked to see dirt, dead spiders, and eggs on top of the piston when I pulled the head off.
Heh. Once me and my brother driving on a same highway on a hot day coming back from a 5 day camping. He called me while driving that he experiences a very bad smell while air conditioning working. So I told him shut that air conditioning off, open the windows and put the heater on for a moment in case there’s a serious thing that I don’t want him loose his engine till we get somewhere and watch for thermostat on dash for over heating. Make it short, we got home and did a quick inspection and couldn’t figure out a thing. I did an hour search looking for a thread with similar experience, and I found one person had the same thing happened before and posted it with a picture. He had a dead mouse stuck in a blower motor. I told him I found the problem 😂. I said go take it to a garage so they open up the blower motor as I had to go to work. Sure enough he sent me a picture with a mouse stuck dead inside that motor 😂. Apparently we were camping and the mouse made it there and got stuck & died there . Hope I help someone who will read this and will experience it in the future
I always check intake first when lack of power, the number of times I have seen squirrels/mice pack things into aircleaners/etc. is way higher than the number of times it was obstructed exhaust/other. I also check it first whenever it's {stalls at lights}.
Different story but I was setting up a old thunder bird for a demolition derby at first it was gutless and would not get out of its own way but I drove it in the first heat and it got all of the power back after the first hit person watching said a lot of dirt came out of the exhaust and then the engine came to life and I was out running the competition and won that heat I looked at the exhaust pipe and It was bent at the muffler and that broke off on that first hit freeing up the exhaust pipe I would be cutting off the exhaust on the next one I was preparing
Had a Sentra suddenly develope poor power and slow acceleration. Opened the airfilter and found a plastic grocery bag had gotten sucked in k sqeezed through the filter and was blocking the mass air inlet!
Is it weird that I recognize the area you did the test drive? Been in central PA for over a decade
Mud wasps get into any open hole . I left my tool box open and just about every socket was plugged with mud . Needed. To clean them out a lube . Mud rusts metal fast .
so you dumped a 100 dollars worth of gas for nothing.
Throttle body should have been one of the first things you check.
Very clever mechanic, honest and straightforward, wished I used his shop.
the pasta noodles in muffler sounds like the work of a mouse.
In 2022, for 1st time in my life I went ahead & bought a 16 years old car.
Was allowed to use it for 3 months before buying it. Transfer over from my Honda the dashboard mounted OBD2 and record by handphone all the displayed parameters.
idling RPM va MAF vs MAP vs throttle valve position vs ignition timing vs O2 sensor reading vs few other parameters.
On the highway set for 60mph and leave it on auto cruise and repeat recording by handphone.
Before you intend to get a specific model of car you should try to loan a good condition & well maintained same model car. Use a dashboard mounted OBD2 and do a recording while the owner drive it. Use the parameters as your base line.
If you have a 2 litre car MAF should be around 5.5g/second if air manifold intake pressure is -7.35psi or 1/2 atmospheric air pressure and rpm at 750. All these few parameters are inter related. Change one of these values then the others also change.
A engine will pull air thru anywhere it can get it, even thru the valve guides which will definitely make it pull oil with it... Lol. Man that thing was smokin.
Mice most likely filled the muffler with the pasta.
I bought a car that sat in storage 10 years could not get it to start. After finally getting it to start and rev up it shot dog food and dead mice out of the tail pipe. Muffler was packed full of dog food.
Air intake is good, but the clutch is still wonky! 😵💫
Still no Power after declogging .. but that is normal for a Ranger.
Nice seeing you fellows enjoying a laugh
First time I've ever seen someone say goodbye during the middle of the video..lol
Heard about an old model T that nobody could get running. Finally someone figured out that the exhaust system was full of water. They drive cars on the ice in the winter around here. It must have broke through.
Showing no code because they don't have a code for dirt dauber nest in intake. 🤣
Dirtdobber are a type of wasp that will build their mud nest anywhere.
Umm a back pressure gauge is the tool for this....
I had a similar situation with a Honda, lady went on vacation for 3 weeks and came home to her car without any power. When I pulled the air cleaner lid off it was like some had poured a 5 pound bag of bird seed around the air filer and leveled it off. It was crammed full. Shop vac and a new filter and she was on her way. Mice had a heyday for a couple of weeks
Common problem in the transport industry. Mud daubers, leaf daubers, mason bees, etc nest inside the air lines. Blockage of the air line is bad enough but if the debris gets into the brake control valves you can have real problems. 😢🤓🍻
I love you channel, very concise no longer then they have to be videos that are full on information. I am a retired tech of almost 50 years, and I even learn something sometimes. When I suspect a plugged exhaust, along with an exhaust pressure test I always hook up a vacuum gauge, WOT and still having 20" on vacuum would have had me checking the air cleaner and ducting.
while i own a back pressure gauge, reading vacuum is a lost art, 2k rpms should be equal or greater than idle vac for cat health. but i'll admit i'll use the map sensor numbers more often now if it has one. appreciate the wot significance.
Yep I was thinking the whole time put a vacuum gauge on it or read map data. Then again everything I own is made before 1990
Always enjoy watching your videos. You are so thorough with your work, carefully diagnosing the symptoms and problems before blindly jumping in and fixing any possible issues. Refreshing to know that there are still qualified and caring auto technicians out there! Thanx and keep ‘em coming!! 👏😎👍🏼
What are you talking about?!
He blindly jumped in concluding the exhaust system was plugged, then he blindly concluded the fuel was contaminated, then he blindly concluded there was something wrong under the valve cover that caused the oil smoke out the tailpipe. Moe only stumbled across the clogged intake when he went to take it off before the valve cover work. Absolutely no careful diagnosis on this one!
Nice story about the pasta that was hilarious I never heard nothing like that before
Bill Shatswell used to take a sparkplug out to check that
I could tell it was really "bugging" you. (ok, now that I got that out of my system, like the mud dobbers) 😉 Where do you dispose of the bad gas?
Must have been sitting for a while for that to happen that much. I remember sometimes coming back to machinery over a weekend and find wasps trying to build nests in the ac drain tube.
The were mud dobbers. Now that we have been here for a while I realize those little buggers are everywhere. Thanks for commenting & watching the channel. Keep wrenching 🔧
# 6:31 Had a friend that was building a hot rod. It was running o.k. but sputtered and backfired a lot. Numerous things could do this. Fuel, electrical, timing, god knows. After some lengthly questioning he mentioned a fuel line problem. I axed him what he used for a fuel line, GARDEN HOSE. That much hose from the pump to the carbonater wuz nuff to screw up the gasoline power.
The spiral pasta out of the exhaust story is always funny!!!
A friend of mine couldn't start her datsun 240z and we found the air cleaner full of nuts, the edible kind. lol.
That would definitely create a problem! Thanks for sharing & watching the channel. Keep wrenching 🔧
The mileage on the truck is 122597 MIles and it's a 2001 GMC Sierra SLE extended cab short bed 2-wheel drive 5.3 l V8 to 285 horsepower stock. But I'm cranking 387 with upgrades I just put a lot of money into this truck Kenny so I'm just curious is this going to kill my rear differential quicker with this gray fluid in there or no?
How did they get in there? Missing air filter?
As good as you are why didn't you hook up a scan tool and watch trim and map data? High vacuum with wot would have pointed to the inlet restriction. Not to mention low on power and didn't check the air filter. Mean no disrespect and am just as guilty going straight to the in depth checking, but KIS exist for a reason ;) Keep up the vids...
A plain old vacuum gauge. Nobody seems to use 'em anymore. It can tell you what's going on with intake and exhaust.
Just put a gauge on the bung hole to see if it’s clogged
Like horse racing business, they jam sponge in to the horse nose to win bet . This is looks like some mechanics on cracks while working on this car before, sometimes they jam craps down the check engine oil level tube
😳 good grief! I haven't heard of the horse racing/sponge thing. That's horrible!
Yeah, those are dirt dobber nests alright 😂 can't say I've ever seen one stuck in a TB. Funny find, not what anyone would expect trying to fix a 4 cylinder ranger
I hate to laugh about the issue, but that was hilarious
Had a an Astro with a 4.3L one day my business partner tells he took it to the dealership and they said the transmission was shot and he needed a new one for $2500. He tells me the symptoms and I said something is not right, I take it and ask the trans shop guy to drive it around the block, within 60 seconds he says your CAT is plugged go across the street to the speedy exhaust place, I said uh-huh, I figured GM dealership was lying AGAIN. Bottom line was $138 to weld in a 2' piece of pipe and all the power is back.
What exacly was those things in the intake manifold ?? (From the Uk )
The nest of a mud-dauber/dirt-dauber, a type of wasp that builds a mud construction and lays eggs in it and places prey it has killed to feed the hatchlings. Mainly a southern US type.
DANG! Something I haven't ran across yet. Interesting 😎🤘🤘🤘
It’s a 2012 ford escape. Every time my battery gets disconnected it will idle low and turn itself off repeatedly until the computer re learns itself. The key has been broken but I had taped it but it got harder and harder to start. The Machanic I use put a switch to the ac compressor bc it wasn’t getting power and turning on without it but after he did that I would have to switch it off when I slowed down at a light or stopped bc it would idle low and turn the car off. Fast forward to now since the keys broke the Machanic used the ignition switch to start it up but the min I put it in gear it will turn off not allowing me time to drive it so the computer can re learn itself. I hear these escapes are notoriously doing things like that is that true? I do Uber/Lyft/DoorDash and favor for work so I NEED my truck to make a living. It’s been sitting here for 2 months already and I can’t get the Machanic to come fix it and get it going for me again. He says he will come but doesn’t show up and Im drowning here I have got to work. What do u think?
Ive had several Escapes and the Mazda version called the Tribute with PCM issues causing all sorts of strange issues . The A/C cant be wired like he did because the system needs to be able to "cycle" . The PCM controls all the things you mentioned. I would honestly find a new mechanic. He sounds like he can do basic repairs , but isnt what we would call a Technician .
Your life seems about as weird as mine. Cuz damn. The muffler pasta cooker and the mud dauber injection special. Damn😂
Where are you located?
Mud wasp...wonderful little critters?
Yup! They get into everything
So whatxabout damadge to engine from sucking LITERAL DIRT into the engine??
Well done this is the best example of diagnosis rather than assume.
What are you talking about?!
Kenny started off assuming the exhaust system was plugged, then he assumed the fuel was contaminated, and then he assumed something was wrong under the valve cover and Moe stumbled across the clogged air intake system while they were going to take the valve cover off to investigate the oil smoke out the tail pipe. There wasn't one ounce of diagnosis on this one!
Snake camera IS A MUST ...
NOTHING EVER REPLACES A REAL EYE BALL INSPECTION ...
NOTHING ..
!!
Wow. K. Air filter. ???? How can. Those get in omg😮
It was crazy! Those dang mud daubbers could get in some small spaces. Thankfully, I don't see them as much where we are now. Thanks for your comment and for watching the channel. Keep wrenching 🔧
YOU ARE NO MECHANIC !
I had a "limping" Jag XJ6 come in for a blown exhaust manifold gasket, I repaired it, sounded great on the floor, tried to drive it, very poor power. It had plugged cats, which caused the exhaust gasket to blow which in turn allowed it limp into my shop... oh the joy!
Word to the wise: Never store a vehicle with anything left open. Bolt down the air cleaner and make sure there is a dang filter in there. And the first thing you check? Make sure there isn't a mouse hole through the air filter. And if there is, get the nest out before you crank.
Love your video's , however a long forgotten tool you did not use , vacuum gauge , would have told you engine condition immediately, at idle 18-20 reading , when accelerating gauge reading would drop , plugged exhaust the reading would rise . Hook it up to the engine intake vacuum line tells you everything about the engine
Good point
@@WrenchingWithKenny Thanks your an old time mechanic like me 40 years having fun with simple mechanic engines love your shows , sometimes new mechanics of today rely on readings other than the old school tools that are a start in diagnosing problems , keep them coming, loving them .
Hi Kenny, thanks for the great video ❤
Thanks for watching the channel & commenting 🔧
Clutch ain't wonky, it's a Ford Ranger. Hydraulic clutch, 100% of the release is 5% of the pedal travel, somewhere in the travel, every one's different.
Why does everything in the video seem reversed? Your name tag reads backward. You sit behind the wheel as if the Ranger has Right Hand Drive?
When filming with my phone in selfie mode , it comes up reversed. Once I get going with a GoPro, that shouldn't happen anymore
Nothing here to see, just aged fuel, and bugs building a nest in the Ventura! How do these things happen? I've had my car for 20 years now and the hood blanket was in perfect condition. Last week I went to check fluids and it looks like something dragged claws all over the passenger side of the hood blanket! WTF 😊
Keep these old horses on the road. Everything since about 2010 is over computerized impossible to fix disposable trash.
I changed a muffler on a 2014 ford f150 , ran perfectly, a month later wouldn’t start, looked like a wig was jammed in the exhaust but it kept coming out, later found out the insulation came out of the muffler, locked up the engine , couldn’t even get the engine to turn by hand
Running a Fuel Pump dry is never a Good Idea. They generally will not last very long after they are run dry. The same goes for ANY Pump. Winshield Washer, Power Steering, etc., as they are NOT designed to run dry, and thay will overheat and cause irreparable damage. Just sayin' . . .
Mud dobbers are a fact of the south. Seen them in places you could've never imagined.
Yeah, that was crazy. Those dang bugs are into everything here! Thanks for watching
@@WrenchingWithKenny alway bud. Good tips and info. Thank you.
Must have parked it for 3 years without an air filter installed.
Can't imagine how mud daubers could have gotten through an air filter.
that’s crazy im having the same problem on mine right now i just took out the tank and cleaned it next going to replace fuel pump and might be checking inside the engine for anything . thanks
best my video Well, that escalated quickly.. No power, no acceleration, no codes. What's wrong ?
Sadly the mufflers along with everything else being sold in America is made so poorly things fall apart before the factory warranty expires 😂😂
I've seen the air duct inside the body get clogged up with debris but never insect obstruction
There was an airplane crash once due to mud daubers like that. Airplane had been parked for 3 weeks, the cover for the air speed sensor was left uncovered. EDIT - basically a vent tube, facing forward.
Your name tag is backwards, but the gauge was fine. Kind of jarring when someone does that to a video.
Good troubleshooting, fuel, spark ,compression and oh yea air is always helpful, knuckle busters are an elite group!!!
yep, bloody mud wasps, fill every hole with mud and within 20 minutes of it being parked, or what ever it is. when those guys get into nest making mode.
You have a license to exterminate?
Im a beekeeper and am constantly telling ppl that "I am not licensed for that" and you just posted evidence. 😂
working near wash dc we had a car come in the owners kids hid "weed", in the air box
We had something similar when I was at the dealer . Kid hid his meth and paraphernalia in the air box . The mom , who brought the car in , was in complete denial saying we put it there
back in the day folks would remove or the hose going from quadrajet 4bbl to the emissions box would rot/fall off, dirt dauber would make a nest in the hose nipple blocking the carburator bowl vent, it would go from no fuel to flooding, bowl vent hose nipple be full of dirt!😢
A friend of mine got a FREE ATV from a guy that could not get it to run, the original owner said it wont run he thinks its not getting gas even after replacing a bunch of parts so he put it out to the curb and gave it away with a huge box of extra parts. There was in this box 3 brand new fuel tanks with petcock valves and 2 brand new carburetors. So my friend asked me to look at it and see if i could get it to run and everything seemed checked out, the tank was spotless the carburetors looked amazing like they never had fuel in them(foreshadowing) but it would only run on starter fluid, well after some investigation i found a dirt wasp nest in the fuel line that was plugged solid, this atv used a very special odd sized molded fuel line that was not easy to find or easy to replace and it was the ONLY original part left in the whole fuel system and once i cleaned out the line it ran perfectly. It's sad to think that the original owner wasted soo much time and money all to give up over a plugged fuel line. Moral of the story is check the simple stuff first or it could cost you big time.
Squirrels are really bad for plugging things up….a squirrel loaded peanuts into every available opening….air intake, muffler etc.
