Thread is manufactured in a way that gives it a smooth finish only when you pull it through fabric in one particular direction. It's like hair. If you run your fingers down a hair, it will feel smooth in one direction but it catches when you run it through your fingers in the other direction. Because thread is smooth in only one direction, it will eventually fuzz up if you pull it through fabric in the wrong direction. So, if you use the loop method to begin a two-strand length, one of the threads will be pulling through smoothly and the other thread will be pulling through in the direction that gradually frays it. If you have an uncut skein, thread your needle from the starting point and then the length of thread that follows will be smooth as it is pulled through fabric. For thread that is already cut into lengths, test it with your fingers to see which way feels smooth before you begin to use it. Your fingers will quickly develop sensitivity to the different feelings.
This system would suit me but in here in UK these are very expensive. I only have about 240 DMC colours and at present there’s about 700 including special colours. To buy all threads and then bobbins I think is too costly. At present I’m using DMC stitchbows in-plastic folders in binders and these have been fairly reasonably priced. It’s a bit of a pain selecting threads for projects but I’ve recently catalogued all my threads and it should be easier in future. Thanks for this info
I store my floss in snack sized ziplock bags. I used to keep them on rings but now I put an index card in the bag with the dmc number in the corner. They are then stored in photo boxes. Yes, they take up a bit more room but it allows for more than one skein of a color of floss. I’ve been stitching probably longer than you’ve been alive so I have a lot of floss!! I have pretty boxes that I put them in and they sit in a bookshelf and look nice. I pull the precut threads and put them in homemade card stick floss drops. I remember learning how to cut a full skein of floss at once. It was like magic!! I do like the atom heart bobbins/drops a lot but I like the system I have now. I’ve tried several other ways to store dmc but I’ve settled in this about a decade ago.
Hi again! I watched you 10 days ago and immediately ordered Atom Heart thread bobbins. I am now watching again since I received them. I am excited to get my floss organized and even more excited to NOT try several ways before finding you 😂
@@TheMuseumStitcher yes, I absolutely love them! They are easy to use and easy to organize. They are versatile, the best of both worlds. I am so glad I found you!! 😊
I've seen Atom Heart products before and forgot about them so thank you for the reminder! For my stash - I cut mine the same exact way in to 8 equal lengths, then I torture myself with motonous work (I really quite enjoy it) by separating each of the eight lengths, folding them in half, and winding them on a bobbin. I keep the loop ends of the folded pieces out so that when I need the color, I just grab the loop, unwind that cut piece, and pull a strand to work with. I store my bobbins in two of the Creative Options 14" Clear Plastic Thread Organizer (it's like a bigger version of the regular cheap bobbin boxes but double sided and has a handle!). I also have extra skeins beyond my master collection for larger projects that require multiple of one color. Until I need them, I keep those in a 15" x 12" Teal Photo & Craft Plastic Storage Bin by Top Notch. It has 16 smaller photo boxes in it so I labeled them in chunks of DMC numbers. Except 310. It gets its own 😂 I got all the storage containers from Joanns and I use regular cardboard bobbins with also colored sticky number labels. I might have to consider these bobbins as a slow upgrade although I might have to buy a third double sided box to account for the extra space these would take up 😂😂 Edited for spelling*
Searching for flight arrangements to bring you to AZ to finish organizing my floss. Lol! Very well done. Thx for the video! And very much eye candy for me! Yours are beautiful!
Thank you SO much!! I’ve struggled to find an organisation for my threads that works for me, as I also love the storage aspect of bobbins, but prefer the functionality of floss drops. These are perfect and a real game changer. Thank you for such a helpful video!! ❤️
I’m new to embroidery, just finished my first sampler kit. I am so glad I found you!!! This speaks to my heart. Thank you so much for doing this video and sharing the links to the products. I will definitely be supporting Aton Heart! 😊❤️
Stored on bobbins for over 40 years. Take your skein cut it as if to put on a drop. Now take 2 of those drops and wrap around a bobbin- repeat till all loaded on a bobbin. You only need to take one pre-cut piece for a project- store that pre-cut piece on a “working” bobbin/drop.
Hi Brijin! I just found your channel recently and I love everything that you are doing! I didn't know there was such a big Cross stitch community and I love it so much! Loved this video, I just ordered by Pip and Chip labels, Atom Heart Floss Bobbins and got a bin from Michaels!! Woooohooo! I'm anxious for everything to come so I can organize. My current organization is shameful so thank you for all the tips!
Your set is beautiful. I also am obsessed with Atom Heart Cross Stitch. I have so many colors and different kinds from her. Not sure which style I love the best though. I actually just scored some of her Valentines Special Edition ones. So excited. I have the pip and chip labels too!
Fantastic video, AS ALWAYS!! 👏 I'm so happy my products work for you and can't thank you enough for all of the wonderful support you've shown my little shop 🥰
I have watched soo may videos looking for the organization method that makes sense for me. This method is so amazing!! Thanks for sharing! I would love to see how you organize all of your specialty and hand dyed flosses.
Thank you! I'm glad you like it! I'm still working out how I want to long term deal with my fancy flosses, but I'll definitely share when I figure it out!
Found this to be a great way to start storing my floss. I am not so much of a floss dropper as I am a bobbinate r but willing to try this hybrid too. Thank you! Liked and subscribed. Now to go back and catch up on prior videos.
I've been doing paper drops diy and I've really liked it! I love how light it is and that the thin paper keeps the rings pretty well packed. I usually just leave my extra floss hanging and have a plan to diy a little case so I can hang the ones I'm not currently using. The one issue I have faced is that paper is that when I snap a thread out of the bunch, if it's a colour I'm really going at the paper can weaken and break. I've avoided using chips because I like being able to snip off a tiny bit of one colour if I need just a few more stitches, and unwinding and rewinding would drive me bananas 😂 but this may solve that issue! I probably won't put them in boxes (maybe, the rules done exist, I can change my mind!) I also cut my floss the same way you do! I like my floss to sit the same way too and my boyfriend laughs at how particular I can get about things being in order and uniform
Thank you! I have been searching thread organization. I did not like the Bobbins and I love the Floss Drops but storage was the big issue! I knew there had to be an answer! You solved my dilemma - I just ordered my drops! =)
I’m a new subscriber and I found your floss organization quite interesting and I’m definitely going to buy myself some Atom Heart bobbins. Thanks for your great advice.

One of the most informative videos I have ever watched. I have ordered my bobbins! Please provide a link for the storage cases. Your videos are great! I am definitely a fan.
After ordering atom floss bobbins I found you when trying to figure out how to organize my floss. Loved this video. Excited to watch your other videos. Just curious…. How do you organize your fancy floss? Thanks so much Julie
I’m new so I gobble all the information, I started with floss drops but was too messy for me. I now use bobbins but I kept the cutting that I learned with the floss drop and I just wrap each Bobbin with individual lenghths.
Good job! Love the multi-purpose bobbins. I'm looking to change mine from the bobbin to the drop floss but where to store the floss drop? Don't want to use a bag and I don't want to wind my cut floss onto a bobbin.
This is great! I’m new to cross stitch and trying to decide how I want to store my floss. What do you do when you need the same color for more than one project?
Thank you! I have several extra bobbins without stickers on them that I actually just use a sharpie to write the number on (it comes off super easy with rubbing alcohol), and pull some off of the master bobbin and stick it on the temp one! That is working really well for me right now! The sticker set also comes with extra stickers for Blanc and 310, so I've got a couple bobbins of those prepped since those are called for a lot!
OMG, I have been looking for a combination of a floss drop and a bobbin for storage. I immediately ordered them from AtomHeart. I had a question about my order and she replied in about 5 minutes, amazing 😲. What kind of bobbin boxes are you using? Are they the standard sizes from DMC or did you have to buy other ones that fit the bobbins? Thank you for finding me the perfect storage!
She has the best customer service and the best products! I've linked my boxes in the description now, they're the basic ones from Michaels! I'm so glad the video was helpful!
I’m currently transferring my floss to the Atom Heart bobbins, based on your video. I’m using DMC stickers, which don’t want to stick well. Any thoughts on how to keep them from falling off? I considered some kind of coating such as clear nail polish.
Unfortunately I don't have any thoughts, I bought the Pip and Chip stickers because I had such bad luck with the DMC ones! The nail polish sounds like a pretty sound plan though!
I love the floss drop/ bobbin combination! Definitely want to try and switch my bobbin over to these. Also, do you put your floss in number order, or do you organize by color schemes? Thanks for the great informative floss tube!
Did you lose a lot of space with those 3mm thick bobbins? I'm looking for translucent plastic that's < 2mm thick. Since I want the bobbin shape modified a smidge, I may finally have to check out my public library's laser cutter and I'll need to source the plastic.
If I may suggest a method of winding your floss onto the winder for cutting, gently pull out the end of the skein from the number end, just like you showed. Continue holding the whole skein gently in your other hand, and place the end of the floss you just pulled out onto the cut-line mark on your winder, and hold it there with your thumb. Then with your other hand holding the floss skein, just gently start pulling the skein down and around the bottom of the winder, and up over the top of it, and continue loosely holding the skein as you keep on pulling it down and up over the top of the winder again, until the skein is almost done. The opposite end of the skein should come to about the cut-line of the winder. Hold the end of the floss you just wound, and cut the whole skein at the cut-line. I cannot take credit for this…I saw it on a tutorial by Vicki on FlossTube at StitchNButton! She’s great, go check out her channel. Thanks! Meline 🤓
I love floss drops but I have to use bobbins because of my cats and the cat hair. I once had a gecko rouge project where I keep the floss like it get delivered, but the cat hair build up over times is just horrible.
I had the same issue with the dmc stickers! I’ve had the Pip and Chip stickers on my bobbins for a year now and I haven’t had any issues with them coming off! So I’d say they’re pretty sticky!
I have the same storage like you. But instead of plastic card I have DMC cardboard. I would like to have plastic card but I am afraid that sticker which has DMC number, could remove. It would be catastrophic if I lost number DMC of thread. And if I change my DMC cardboard to plastic card, maybe I will need more place because plastic card is more thick. What do you think about it ?
I've actually never used the DMC bobbins, so I'm not sure space wise, but I did try the DMC stickers and they flaked off really easily! That's why I went with the Pip and Chip ones!
Unless you're a monogamous stitcher, if you take the bobbin out of the box for one project, you won't be able to use that color for another project (because you only have one bobbin per color). And even worse, what if you have multiple skeins for a color? You can only fit one skein on a bobbin, so where would the extra skeins for that color be stored?? I'm a bobbin hater clearly.
Actually, this system has solutions for all of those issues! I only keep my DMC in the projects that I'm actively working on, which means they go back in the boxes when that project is out of rotation. I note when I pull them to go in certain projects on a spreadsheet, so if I'm looking for a particular color I know where to find it. Also, if I'm concurrently working on two projects with the same color I use some extra bobbins without stickers and a sharpie to create a second temporary bobbin drop. Once I'm done I can transfer the remaining threads I split off the master bobbin drop back to the master bobbin and erase the sharpie with rubbing alcohol. I also keep multiple bobbins of commonly used colors like 310 for that purpose. Also, I have multiple skeins of a lot of colors, and I keep the extras in a separate box, also noted on the spreadsheet, so that when I run out on the master I can refill from my stash first. The whole point of this system is to cut down on double buying and having a ton of extra skeins to keep track of, so I'm looking forward to clearing out my stash as I use it. I hope that helps, though it already seems like you have a system that works for you. Everyone has a different way of doing things, and it doesn't make one way "worse" or better.
Thread is manufactured in a way that gives it a smooth finish only when you pull it through fabric in one particular direction. It's like hair. If you run your fingers down a hair, it will feel smooth in one direction but it catches when you run it through your fingers in the other direction.
You are a breath of fresh air. Thank you for staying on topic and to the point. Some people get very windy. Thank you

Thank you! I actually just keep my fancy floss on big binder rings by brand and color, I haven't found my ideal permanent system for those yet!
I am anxious to try the Atom Heart bobbins! Thanks for your suggestions! I have struggled with the same dilemmas as you have!

Good job! Love the multi-purpose bobbins. I'm looking to change mine from the bobbin to the drop floss but where to store the floss drop? Don't want to use a bag and I don't want to wind my cut floss onto a bobbin.
That was my issue too! The floss drop bobbins were the perfect solution though, easy storage but still a floss drop!

I love the floss drop/ bobbin combination! Definitely want to try and switch my bobbin over to these. Also, do you put your floss in number order, or do you organize by color schemes? Thanks for the great informative floss tube!
I organize in number order! It just makes it a bit easier for me to find specific colors when I’m kitting things up!
Did you lose a lot of space with those 3mm thick bobbins? I'm looking for translucent plastic that's < 2mm thick. Since I want the bobbin shape modified a smidge, I may finally have to check out my public library's laser cutter and I'll need to source the plastic.
I don't find that I lose much space with the 3mm! But it's all personal preference in the end!
Good information. Thanks
Did you ever resell the bobbin collection? I’d be interested!
I actually haven't! If you're still interested please shoot me an email at themuseumstitcher@gmail.com and we can talk more!
What is the name of the storage boxes in the video?
Added to the description box!😉
Thanks! Meline 🤓
This is exactly what I do! Thanks for sharing it Meline!
@@TheMuseumStitcherOh, that’s so awesome!!! 😇🩷
I love floss drops but I have to use bobbins because of my cats and the cat hair. I once had a gecko rouge project where I keep the floss like it get delivered, but the cat hair build up over times is just horrible.
How long do the stickers stay on the bobbin? I had the DMC bobbin stickers and they never stayed on
I had the same issue with the dmc stickers! I’ve had the Pip and Chip stickers on my bobbins for a year now and I haven’t had any issues with them coming off! So I’d say they’re pretty sticky!
How would you label "fancy floss" using the Atom Heart? I feel like fancy floss labels are too big for these?
I actually just use a fine tip sharpie to write on the center of the floss drop! The sharpie comes right off with rubbing alcohol!
These look great! Does anyone know of an option like this sold in the UK? International shipping is pricey😬
I'm not sure! Pip and Chip is the only UK storage company I know, but I'm not sure if they have a combo bobbin/floss drop!
I use them to make friendships bracelets
Thanks!!!🎉❤

Please link the storage boxes that are in your video. Atom Heart floss bobbins are amazing!
They're linked in the description box! Aren't they the best??
Thank you so much. Great video.
Yuck anyone’s yum 😂
