I love older movies and comedies, bit I've never saw this before. Absolutely hilarious. I was laughing out loud and my kids thought I lost my mind. Thank you for this!❤
Oh my god! How I love this sketch! I've been watching "The 90th Birthday" several times every New Year's Eve for over 50 years now - and I laugh my ass off every time... I know every gesture, every stumble, every "don't stumble" and every single word by heart ^^ I laughed the hardest when my then 4 year old son started acting out the whole sketch with his little table and chair and a teddy as Miss Sophie and the kids' crockery while it was on TV! The cutest thing I've ever seen ^^ (thank goodness I have it on video; now watching THIS version is also a firm tradition in our family...) I'm in tears every New Year's Eve: first from laughter, then from sheer emotion ^^ I love it!
New Year's Eve without Dinner for One is unimaginable for a large part of German people, it is just as much a part of it as the Christmas tree is part of Christmas
This classic runs on german television on december 31st the whole day on several channels ... you litterly can't miss it! It's repeated on the 1st of january! Fells like it runs on 10 channels at least once an hour! I read somewhere (not sure if it's true), that it's aired like 42 times in 20 hours! But yeah: every german knows this play for sure! Me even had this play in school in english class, when I was young.
The sketch features Miss Sophie, an elderly upper-class Englishwoman, who hosts a birthday dinner for her 90th birthday. However, Miss Sophie's friends - Sir Toby, Admiral von Schneider, Mr. Pommeroy, and Mr. Winterbottom - have all passed away, leaving her the last surviving member of her social circle. Her butler, James, assumes the roles of each of her deceased friends, with Miss Sophie playing along as if they were still alive...
Did you miss the punchline? James will do his very best, four times, as he has to act instead of those four best friends of Miss Sophie's , AFTER she has gone to bed.
This is not the German version, but the Swiss version. The German version lasts 18 minutes and contains more style, humour and also more gags than the Swiss version. This is also one of the reasons why critics consider the Swiss version to be loveless and styleless.

Interesting. I’m now a German cause i will be doing that next year 😁😊
It's unimaginable to not show it in Sweden either at New Years Eve.
It's a tradition I have watched all since I was a kid, being 51 and a half now.

Noo i didn’t. Thank you 😊
None of the reactors so far seems to get the "i will do my very best" at the end.
FOUR TIMES, one after another, or even five times, as Sir Toby always wants more than the other three.
