- This really hits home. Much of this talk covers some of the most stressful moments of my early adult life, and my mom discusses how she was able to wrestle with her own feelings about me coming out. Working through these emotions isn’t easy and sometimes the best medicine is time.
Talking about this tumultuous time in my life has me thinking of just how far we’ve come as a family. I feel incredibly blessed to have the best mother in the world.

I came out at 30. Dad didn’t speak to me for 12 years…..
We were fortunate to have him back in our lives for his last 16 years….
His last words to me was to give my handsome husband a big hug from him….

What a beautiful relationship you have with each other. Age is a number not a problem for whoever you choose to love, only you can decide that. In my day we gad too much stigma to be that open, I was 25 when I officially got told I was by my mother. Lol. It was reversed, she asked me. My dad's first words were do you need to see a doctor . That gave me so much support from my mother and within an hour he apologised. To this day I don't know what my mother said. But he came running.
Your mama is so sweet and honest. I love that you two have found this space of trust and love. May it continue to help you both grow and flourish.

my mom didn’t take me serious when i said i was bisexual. she said being bisexual was disgusting and that made me feel really upset and shitty. you’re very lucky to have such an amazing and understanding mother. i wished my mom would understand me the same way.

You're very blessed to have such a loving Mom. My Mother completely disowned me and wouldnt let me come and at least say goodbye to her when she was in hospice. She knew I had been diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer at the time. It's been almost 3 years now since she passed. I spent my entire life hiding it from her to keep her happy. Then I just had to tell her. Sure wished it turned out better. So, you are really blessed for sure to have such a loving mom.🙂

You have a really wonderful mom. For me, my parents had ideas and expectations for my life which they had to put aside when we had "the conversation." I didn't come out to them per se; my dad asked me. My mom told me she was uncomfortable with it, and later told me she blamed herself in some ways. I told her that "kids often turn out in ways other than their parents expect or want, but they have to understand it's not the parents' fault." My mom in particular has always turned a critical eye on anyone I've been involved with for my entire life; the two girlfriends I had in high school said she made them feel uncomfortable. Ha ha! It's always great when your parents have your back, which your mom obviously does in spades, and I'm so glad she loves Brian so much. Great video!
38 and still haven't come out. I admire your courage and your mom for loving you first above all else. She really is a cryer, as she started to 4× here lol

My husband and I love to travel and are starting to travel again now that Covid seems to be under control (I think!). I loved your travel videos. Then discovered your athlete video (I also was a competitive NCAA athlete.)This video was so different. You are usually so much fun. This one was raw, real, and very honest. Thank you for sharing such a poignant conversation between you and you mom. It was very vulnerable and you both are very brave to put this out there. My old school father wouldn't talk about it. Mymum she had no clue, but had no problem with acceptance. That was the day she held my hand and told me she loved me for the first time (long story). We were best of friends since.

Awesome! So glad you and your mom are close! My mom is my biggest ally and I love her immensely. She cried for a long time after I came out because she was worried about all the bad people in the world that would want to hurt me. It broke my heart when she told me why she was so sad. I thought it was because she didn't really accept me. Fast-forward and man, don't let her hear you talk shit about the LGBTQ community! Hellfire will rain down on you! And I love her for her acceptance and fierce support!
Beautiful relationship between mother and son. This mother loves her son SO much, thats obvious. And this son will forgive his mother anything, as we can see here. I'm envious. Lovely family. Proud of momma for coming around, proud of son for being so understanding and patient with her. 💕💕
A mother knows the difference in their children. I never had to say anything. Wasn’t afraid over the years because of the similar love and support my family has. The one’s that are the closest have unconditional love and support. Heartfelt to see the love.
The age thing is is worrisome until you see the love your son sees. I was judged because I’m older at one time but it took learning who I am was the leveling factor.

So emotional. It’s similar to my coming out-with my mother. She blamed my father for not being there for me and sent me to a psychiatrist the next day. My mother never really understood me even until her death really. We’re both very emotional so there was a lot of crying, even till the very end of life. I thought she had excepted it many times… in reality she never could. She didn’t have anything against gay people she had gay friends. However, she didn’t see me that way. She’s always pointing out somebody effeminate; and say:”that’s a gay person.” She cared too much about what the outside world thought. In the end, I had to except her for who/what she was. Thank you for doing this, it was very powerful for me.
I just started watching your videos. My husband and I are 15 years apart in age.Luckily we had great parents. I am 63 now and he is 78.In the fall we celebrate 45 years together.Married in 2008.. Goes to show differences in age do not matter when it comes to longevity. Good luck yo you both
Omg! Watching you and your Mom talk about your story reminded me of when I did the same (in my 20's🤭)...just made me tear up a little. I can see the unconditional love! My mom was the same and gave me the " I knew, I was just waiting for you to tell me " line! This just made me happy to watch! That's a wonderful relationship there. I came out when I was 40. Unfortunately, it meant the end of my marriage and my mother was very fond of my wife. My father too. So, all the concern was for her and I really didn't get much of a look in, but even after that, there wasn't the opportunity of going over the past. They were completely accepting. No bible was going to get in the way, but other than my mother saying, 'well there was a time when I said to your father that I thought you might be gay ...' (a conversation that was interrupted, goddammit!) we never got back to the subject an she passed away six years later.
The age thing is interesting, but with time it has become much less relevant. People don't talk about age differences now, compared to a time when a difference of just three or four years was considered a mismatch. I reach 58 in two days time and I have my young admirers and I know that the attraction is real and not, as too often perceived, some kind of fetish. You know, they call it things like 'a daddy complex' and it is such a clueless expression. The last thing that goes on in a good relationship is guys seeking substitutes. I happen to have a solid preference for asian guys and that's something that's been there since my school days. You could theory this, theory that, but it's just what it is.
One thing I do know, Jonathan, for sure, is you're darned attractive, young man!

I never even had this conversation with my mother. We both knew and it was just treated as normal. My mother was very supportive. The only thing I had problems with was the bullying in school and mom was like the mean Mama Bear 🐻. She's the one who got me through those days and made me know there's nothing wrong with me...it was the insecurities of those who were bullying.
@@dtwolfe63 Yes Dan, the bullying was terrible. The daily fear wore me down. Day after day. I hope that the young lads of today don’t have to face that.

This amazing discussion proves how remarkable the mum is. She clearly had to process the issues which concerned her. But her acceptance of her sons gayness was with out question. What a contrast to the coming out stories where one or both parents have a meltdown and the kid gets thrown out of the house. It is extraordinary that the sexual preferences of kids are still such an issue for parents. As if life wasn’t complicated enough.

Your mother is very loving. I never told my mother, but she knew. Mothers always know. My first lover was twice my age and soooo good to me. Sadly, my mother died and I never told her.
Live your life to be a good example of what you believe. Someday you will look back and know exactly why it had to happen. Appreciate where you are in your journey. Even if it's not where you want to be. Every season serves a purpose. You can't change your situation. the only thing you can change is how you chose to deal with it. And you did! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🎯
In the end, you'll realize the best thing in life is not something you can touch, but something you can feel 💕

Awww! I'm envious of you two. My mother passed away when I was only 20, before I came out. I was just getting to know her as an adult. I feel cheated that I did not get to share my true self with her before she passed. I sometimes have nightmares that she is still alive but, living with an entirely different family and will have nothing to do with me. I hate those dreams.
To that, my mom would say something like, “Mothers always know. They just know.”
Regardless, verbally sharing that is something special and I am sorry you didn’t have that opportunity. Best wishes to you and your family❤️

Thanks for your story. I lost my partner in a car accident and he was everything to me. I could only see darkness and everyone seemed too busy to care as I could no longer manage my life. I hopped on a plane to visit old friends in Colombia and have been here for years.

I’ll be honest though, the genuineness of the moment is a bit under minded by the fact it’s being recorded.
Like, it’s not that I don’t believe your mom is being truthful, it’s just when things are recorded with everyone’s awareness, the feeling of it being performative doesn’t go away.
Like, really happy for you that you can have such an accepting mother with unconditional love, but I wish there was a way to extract the genuineness of the moment out of the feeling of cameras on you.

Very happy that you and your Mum have such a great relationship and thank you for sharing this video. A genuine question - why do so many Americans not use seatbelts when driving? Does the law not require everyone to wear seatbelts? Even if the law doesn't require seatbelt use, why not use it anyway, to reduce the seriousness of injuries in a crash?
Here in Australia the law requires mandatory use of seatbelts. People routinely use seatbelts, and compared to the rest of the world we have a low death rate from car crashes. Thanks again.

Great question. Honestly this vehicle was so old and the seatbelt latches didn’t work. It has since been replaced with a new vehicle!
Truth be told, when I was first editing this video, I felt terrible about knowing that seatbelts weren’t used! 99.9999% of the time, we definitely use seatbelts! Cheers my friend, thanks again!

As a former paramedic and someone who has never been to America, I'm curious to know what your law is regarding seatbelts (I see lots of US videos showing people driving in cars with nobody wearing seatbelts). Is there no law in America requiring people to wear seatbelts? Maybe it's optional to wear them? Also, do US police not carry portable "breathalyser" units to immediately get a roadside breath alcohol reading from suspected drunk drivers? All Australian police cars carry breathalysers so police can tell who is driving while drunk. Any further info is appreciated. Out of interest, according to these Australian govt figures the US death toll in road crashes is nearly two and a half times higher than in Australia (per 100,000 of population) www.bitre.gov.au/publications/ongoing/international_road_safety_comparisons Thanks and have a good day.
@@mspalmboy there are indeed laws about wearing seatbelts, the common tag line being “click it or ticket”
I think this may vary from state to state though.
Breathalyzers, I believe most cruisers do have them.
Apparently turn signals are optional in certain states, too! Lol Driving in Rhode Island or Boston - nobody seems to know how to use them. It’s infuriating!

Mom deserves credit for the way she's adjusted and seemingly arrived at a positive relationship with her son. That said, parents watching this need to know a few things. First, you child's sexuality and/or coming out IS NOT ABOUT YOU. Nothing about you or related to you - not your parenting, not an absent father, nothing - has influenced or caused his/her sexuality. So the good news is: you don't need to beat yourself up. But that also means you don't get to make it about you. If you want to examine your parenting, question the life choices you've imposed on your children or whatever, do it on your own time; don't burden your child with your hang-ups, out-dated prejudices and dumb misconceptions. The things you say in response to your kid coming out, especially the hurtful things (from vicious religious judgements through to lack of acceptance) will stay with them forever. You can't take them back, they will be a permanent shadow on your relationship. Which leads me to one more observation. It's 2021 and not being prepared for one of your children being possibly gay (or bi, or trans or whatever) can now be regarded as simply poor parenting. It's not a hugely unlikely event; it's something that you should have thought about well before your child hits puberty. In fact, before you actually commit to having children. Then at least you stand a better chance of not reacting badly, saying hurtful things you can't take back, and either damaging your parent-child relationship or losing your child forever.

I got a little bit confused about your mother's logic (missing father figure) when she initially tried to understand why you picked an older man as a companion. I mean, if I understand correctly - your father was still alive when you came out and you were dating an older man at that time, so there was no missing father figure. And if I may suggest another topic for discussion, I would like to see a video of how religion affected you and your family in dealing with your sexuality (if there was any impact at all). Hey Jonas! So my biological father died when I was 2 years old, but my mom remarried and I was legally adopted my step-dad when I was 13. My step-dad and I have always been close, but my mom’s point was that she didn’t think that was enough. Really appreciate the comment! Religion didn’t really play a role in my situation, as it was mostly having everyone get over the shock of me being into older guys rather than a religious concern of me being gay.

I came out when I was 38 and took my parents a while to accept, questioning themselves.
I was ostracised for a couple of weeks, but the love my parents have for me, they managed to accept it and move on.
I know I am lucky in this respect as some people don’t have that support and are thrown out.
Despite the hurt at the time, I always look on the positive side of things.
Okay, but the hay all over the back of the car? Looks like my family's car 24/7. Also your mom is basically my mom, all the way down to the comfy hoodie and bandana. They should get together and start a club for rancher moms who love and stan their kids no matter what.

I remember when I came out. I was seeing someone (currently my husband). He had been out long before me. He told me that I had to come out if I wanted our relationship to continue. I was very determined that I wanted to be with him. I came out to my Mom that night. I asked her to come to my bedroom. I started bawling and she asked what was wrong. I told her. She just held me and told me that she already knew. Mine and my Mom's relationship became stronger. I was able to be with the person I wanted to be with as well. We have been together for 17 years now.
Im shocked because if you truly care about someone you shouldnt try to force them to do something like that but glad it turned out okay for you!

If parents just could understand that being gay is not a choice maybe it would be easier. Only a mother's pure love can accept it without judging. This woman is a real good mom. My respects to her.

Just my 3¢...... First I think it was a really great that you and your mom made this video and shared it on your channel ..... BUT.... Secondly the thought or statement in regards to the "people that love you most will come around in time. " And that it simply just is not a true fact for alot of LGBTQ+ people ! As for many the people they think would or should love them the most and unconditionally don't. And they turn their back on them kick them out or disown them etc ..And NO amount of time makes them think or fell any differently. It's just true and sad reality that should not be kinda glazed over or sugar coated in a way that it will be totally fine and ok like they will come around in their own time as though anyone watching this now or in the future would believe that is what will happen if they decide to or do come out to their friends and family.
Yes, you're right. I took his point to be that some people need time & space to process and that an initial bad reaction might not be indicative of the final oucome. As an aside, some people might 'accept' that you're gay and may have a same-sex partner at some point, but your 'gayness' will always be a burden (in THEIR minds) they have to carry/manage/deal with.
However, you are correct in that often people NEVER come around. There's nothing you can do to change that and you're wasting your time & energy trying. Aside from reminding them that you're the same person you were when they thought you were straight and answering any questions they might have, you don't have any input into how they respond. Remember, if the accepted you before they knew you were gay and reject you afterward, it is 100% on them and ZERO% on you. You are completely blameless no matter what word they might put into your ears.
