- Playing as a Fighter in this game, I can get stuck at some moments since it has been a while that ive played this old school game. But this game should got more respect from the newer generation since its one of the first FPS games that feature classes to pick from.

Hexen: Beyond Heretic is a first-person shooter video game developed by Raven Software, published by id Software, and distributed by GT Interactive beginning on March 16, 1996. It is the sequel to 1994's Heretic, and the second game in the Serpent Riders series. The word Hexen is German for "witches".
The game received mostly very positive reviews in computer gaming magazines. There were complaints of the graphics being crude in comparison to the preceding game in the series, Heretic, but vast and well designed levels plus numerous enemies and weapons were seen as advantages.
Following the tale of D'Sparil's defeat in Heretic, Hexen takes place in another realm, Chronos, which is besieged by the second of the Serpent Riders, Korax. Three heroes set out to destroy Korax. The player assumes the role of one such hero.
A new series feature introduced in Hexen is the choice of character class. Players may choose to play as a fighter, cleric, or mage. Each character has unique weapons and physical characteristics, lending an additional degree of variety and replayability to the gameplay. The fighter relies mainly on melee attacks and is tougher and faster than the other characters. The cleric uses specialized weapons, some of which have limited range or healing effects. The mage uses long-range weapons, whose reach is counterbalanced by dealing relatively little damage and the fact that the mage is the most fragile of the classes.
Hexen introduces the concept of "hub" levels to the series, wherein the player travels back and forth between central hub levels and connected side levels. This is done in order to solve larger-scale puzzles that require a series of items or switches to be thrown. The player must traverse through a hub in order to reach a boss and advance to the next hub.

That music for the first level is a masterpiece
Kids these days will never understand how mindblowing these graphics were back then.
...? I owned the original n64 and was never unimpressed or impressed by graphics. The gameplay was what interested me.
Same with halo 1/2/3
Same with Unreal tournament 2004.
Same with doom 1-4

Never played this back then, but now I am just impressed by the atmosphere. Its as if you stumbled i to a weird dimension where you need to know how everything works. New games don't have that feeling. No mystery. They are just games.
I am a Gen-Z kid and I have a TON of respect for old school FPS games, old games in general, not just First-Person Shooters. I even like them more than modern FPS games (because those mostly suck) and I keep telling my friends saying how mindblowing DOOM, Quake and Duke 3D were at the time. They also really respect old games
It is still fucking good. Somehos these games are much more fun than some new Ubisoft stuff...today im buying the original doom and duke nukem for ps4 just because they simply kick ass even today

Finally found this game. It's been deep in my memory for so long. I remember the stress of trying to dodge those crushing pillars in the first level.
Damn. Look how far we've come. I've been binge watching old PC game plays for a while now. Brings back good memories from when I was a kid, playing on my Dad's PC. Doom, Heretic, Mageslayer, Hexen and Hellbender!

well. you've got Brutal Hexen in development, from the same guy(Sgt_Mark_IV) that has made Brutal doom...don't know how long till it's finished or the current state of develpment.

I remember playing this game, and I loved it cause you get pick out one of three characters. I got the mage cause it fits my personality and he resembles me more cause of the red coat and cute boots.

Love how you could change the color of the robes, but he was always blue in game either way LOL
I loved the mage, but the cleric will always be my favorite. He had that candy apple cape with them boots with the fur. Not to mention his sprit weapon was insane!

When I used to play this as a kid (5 and 6) this game would scare the absolute shit out of me haha. Funny to look back at what it really looked like.

Deunel there's a game called "Amid Evil" coming, but it's not exactly the same.
This can be played as part of the Zdoom download which has all the Dooms, Heretic, Hexens and Strife, if you still want to play this great game. It has the Quake GUI built into it with bot support and can be run in 1920x1080, if you so wish. For me, this game has stood the test of time due mainly to its puzzles and difficulty (especially the xpac). Still play it every few years and was lucky enough to first complete the game in late '95 playing in 4 player co-op. Awesome memories. Dat music!
Hexen was the first game i ever played!! Next to counter.. For the n64. I was only 8yd. Im 23 now

He told me that he had been working on a level himself for ages and he went out them room for 10 minutes and when he came back I solved it for him.

No joke - Cleric ultimate BEST ultimate.
Fighter is a tank for sure. IT's been like 15 years since I've played but I *think* its claim to fame is that all of its weapons will work without Mana (just less damage). Its special/ultimate is kinda boring, though - just a sword that slings little magic bullets sort of like a shotgun. I remember it not doing very much damage and being hard to hit anyone at any real range.
20 years later and no game has better FPS melee gameplay than this
No, there are some FPS with better melee combat, like Comdemned for instance.
+fohstick a brutal doom mod has a good melee sistem

It did the same for me...nowadays the only thing that would scare the daylights out of me for this game was that you'd die if you fell from a great distance.
I played Hexen way back in the late 90's - I was using windows 98 I think. I loved this game - it was a FPS and I didnt have to contend with others trying to kill me - just the monsters. That was perfect!!! Oh and yes I am a female too. There are very few FPS these days that are just single player games any more. They are all multiplayer games, and I just prefer single player. Hexen was a fun game. And NO I never played Heretic.

Hexen is a good Game, I own for the Nintendo 64. I heard that the Version for PC and Playstation 1 is much better as the Nintendo 64 version. Is that right? and is there such a huge difference?

Always wanted to play this when I was young but never got round to it... To me it looks like Doom meets Elder Scrolls Daggerfall.
I played that constantly after work, tho Hexen 2 was better. My husband & I argued over who got the computer that night. I still have the disks for Hexen 2!

I still have both heretic and hexen on disc, I kind of wish it was on the game systems like on the playstation network or xbox live.
its on the steam the complete package with all the hexen games for 9,99 dollars...
I already have them on my laptop, but it's no fun playing on a small screen. I'm considering getting the Steam Machine, still doing research on it. I was just saying it would be cool having games like that on the home consoles.

If you mean the new order on PS4, it looks amazing. I don't know what else it is on. I play mostly my ps3, don't have a ps4 yet.

Its sure is fun, but quite hard to find your way around the huge levels :p
what mods did you use? i'm playing it on dosbox and it doesn't look as good.. and there is no glow around the torches, or when you hit someone with the axe..

The graphics and gameplay seem so much crappier than when I first played Hexen. Back then I thought it was an excellent game.
i used to play on ps1 but i remeber being really scared haha and i didnt have a memory card so i never finished it.
Ahh, those were the days when so many online videos hadn't desensitized us and turning this game on in your house felt like it took over your whole room.
i remember playing this on n64....but i never got this far, i never understood how to play it
TheJarhead133 ikr ... Did the same thing in Tomb Raider II. Took me a month to actually start the game and not just the tutorial level. Didnt even complete the game until I tried it again as adult. Good times though.
