I played for 50 yrs or more, really impressed with this guitar, the USA a one is awesome, I got the se stone blue really liking it. Subscribed.
Thanks for the sub, Rick! I love that perspective of someone who’s seen and probably played many Strats from different eras. I agree. Love the guitar.
I love how in tune it stays for the most part
The tuning stability is really something on this guitar. I don’t know if it’s the locking tuners and nut combination or what, but it works.
I have an Eric Johnson Stat and a 2018 Silver Sky. The PRS is the one I reach for most often now. There is a distinct difference in tone but and the Sky has a little more punch.
The overall quality is excellent.
You know this intuitively as you look it over and feel it when playing. If I had to choose I’d keep the Silver Sky. It really grew on me over time.
I feel the same way about my SS vs my MIJ 50s reissue. I’ve got some guilt for how little I play the Fender now lol
How does it look now with your preferences? EJ and Silver Sky are exactly the 2 guitars I am considering to buy as my one and only strat.
I haven’t played an EJ, but I do really enjoy my SS.
Fun fact: All three pickups of the Silver Sky are identical!
There are no special pickup versions for neck, middle or bridge.
Paul himself said this in an interview.
True! It's just those different physical positions. Somehow, they managed to create a pickup that was infinitely better in the middle and bridge, while still being great in the other three positions. Kudos to them! SE pickups are different, but still awesome in their own way. Much hotter and snappier output.
I played a Silver Sky in the store and was surprised that it has plastic tuning keys. Great sounding guitar!
I’ve seen some complaints on that around the internet. Honestly, it’s an aesthetic thing/choice and I think it looks awesome. Certainly, there are better and more substantial feeling materials they could have used.
Silver Sky tends to be significantly lighter compared to an average Fender. Lightweight tuners could be one of many details that add up to that result. Mine is under 7 lb, which is practically unheard of in production Stratocasters. To get there with Fender you have to go Custom Shop and pay extra for the “sort wood by weight” option, and even then the guitars usually end up slightly over 7 lb.
@victorm758 I agree with you. I was told Paul Reed Smith wanted the headstock to be light so this is why they choose these light and easy to grab tuners.
They sound fantastic.
When this guitar released I didn’t care for it, on paper the specs were not for me, I decided to play one in my local store and fell in love! On top of that they had 2 and they played identical! Consistency surprised me, so I bought one. Later the store started bringing the SE models, they feel and sound great! I really want to buy an SE and route the bridge pickup to have a humbucker.
Ooo you might break the internet with a HSS Silver Sky SE!
@@TomButwin I’ve herd they’re crucifying people for that!
I like thinner, lower frets as they seem to promote more accurate intonation across the entire neck. Higher frets tend to make us push the string down and out of tune, and fatter frets can make you touch the string in a less-than-optimal place.
My '62 Strat needed new frets and I chose the original 6230 fret wire, which is on the thinner side and not too high.. That's what a proper Strat (or Tele) feels like to me. On a Gibson SG or Les Paull, anything goes, but I think the frets tend to lean towards the larger ones on these as they do on a '59 LP. However, I had a '61 ES-335 that had rather thin, low frets, and it was no bother a'tall.
I think that as fret size goes, "It's no hanging matter". We quickly get use to them, whatever their size.
I have always fancied the sound of the Strat's middle pickup. I once read that Leo thought of the middle pickup as the default position and sound of the guitar and designed it with that in mind, or rather, in ear. :D
Tuning stability is a big reason I’m looking at PRS in general. I play Epiphones and Gibsons, and haven’t heard an in-tune fretted G string in years… 😂 I adore their feel but it’s a real bummer when you want to switch from lead to chords.
I have to say, my Silver Sky is very stable when it comes to tuning.
Sire guitars beat everything all to hell. Sire is the real deal strat and tele and 335 and jazzmaster and les paul. They are all leaps and bounds ahead of anything I've played in a long time. Been a guitar tech for over 47 yrs and I fell in love with Sire guitars. I think you will too!
I have 2 of them (USA model) and it's awesome guitar. Its an HD Stratocaster. Easy to play, easy to tune, easy to sound great and easy to acces to the high frets
I'm SO tempted to get another one. What colors/years do you have?
Mhm. HD strat. You're right.
I have the Ultra Luxe Strat, so I don't have to work about neck radius or neck heel shape. Both excellent.
I am sorry, but the Silver Sky core model is just a bunch of hocus pocus. So glad that PRS corrected all these design flaws and critical mistakes you mentioned as well in the video with the SE version, the Second Edition or Special Edition. It`s a significantly better guitar now but I think I am still going hold out for the TE model. Third Edition would be only for pros like me, no radius at all, completely inflatable, 100 % stringless but shipped in hard shell case. My favorite thing about this channel is that doesn’t matter what opinion we have you always find something nice to say about it. Both the core and the SE are amazing guitars.
😂😂 no radius and stringless. This sounds like something from that Chibson Instagram account. I love it.
When it comes down to it, I’m not an expert in anything and everyone’s opinion has something of value in it…unless it’s about coffee and they think drip is better than espresso. Then we have a problem.
😂
I have a PRS 594 CORE AND I LOVE IT, I'M THINKING ABOUT A SILVER SKY AND I HAVENT MADE UP MY MIND.
Ahhh love those 594’s. If you are looking for that three single coil thing, there are few better than the Silver Sky, in my opinion.
What a great video, thanks for sharing.
I just bought the SE model I think they are not much different. I am very excited about my purchase
I have used both the core US and SE model and find that I actually like the neck profile on the SE more than the US model. If they release a maple board version of the SE I just might have to grab one :)
As Ray says below, the biggest difference between the SE and Core is the neck finish/profile. When I played them back to back, that’s what really stuck out. I felt most comfortable on the Core neck, but if I had owned an Se first, I could easily see feeling through opposite. Here’s my video where I talk about that: ruclips.net/video/MWqUcadp0nY/видео.html
I know they said it’s not in the plans (yet), but I’m sure they will eventually. Their sales are so hot and at capacity, I think they’d be smart to wait until they need to reenergize internet down the line. Here’s a video where I look at the neck differences ruclips.net/video/MWqUcadp0nY/видео.html
I have 3 years with my horizon Silver Sky. I agree with you on your five surprises. I have to add a few.
1. Floating the tremolo, it’s a great feeling tremolo, very smooth and you can feel how it returns to position.
2. I did not like the plastic tuner knobs, but it’s a lot easier and smoother than the traditional or vintage representations.
Bought a killer custom shop fender and fell in love with it… I still use the silver sky a lot, I kind of see the silver sky as an HD version of a Strat with the right amount on modern features. A week thought guitar, feels vintage with modern appointments.
HD Strat is a perfect description. I’ve wondered about floating the trem too. I don’t usually do it, but it sounds like the SS handles it well! Appreciate the comment.
I have a Silver Sky SE I bought the first day they were avaiable. I love it, it plays great and the pickups are all the same output so they sound perfect. The neck is a bit bigger which is ok but I prefer the 7 1/4 I have a set of 63 1/2 pickups in a Strat and they have a simular tone. I have a 7 1/4 V neck on it to go full on Clapton!
Love the Clapton V! Took me a min to get use to the Silver Sky neck since I’ve mostly had various deep V’s, but I love it and prefer it now.
I absolutely love my Silver Sky SE! I can’t put it down and it’s my #1 when it’s time to play a show and make money
The frets on the newer ones are taller and are improved in my opinion. The original ones did have small frets and I prefer the newer ones.
Do you know about what year they made that change?
@@TomButwin 2021...ruclips.net/video/-FNVbE1XluY/видео.html
My man @justinjeske !
@@TomButwin The maple fretboard ones were larger from the first year they came out. The rosewood board one started to have bigger frets on 2022 year models. I have a 22 maple and a '18 rosewood - very different feels. Thinking of selling the '18 and buying a new rosewood board
Do you know if all 2022 models have these bigger frets? Even early 2022 models.
I played a maple fretboard 2021 model and the neck was extremely comfortable for me and easy to play. I have large hands and long fingers.
A friend of mine tried the same guitar after me and he didn’t like the neck as much.
Typically I like jumbo frets. However I’ve played guitars with smaller frets that have felt good as well.
People always make a big deal about the soft case issue with PRS. I see it as a bonus. It's way more practical than a Gibson hard case and I would never fly with one of those either. As for the knobs, I just can't get used to the buttery smooth potentiometers on a PRS. It would seem like a good thing but its not. Some resistance gives you better feel and control. Btw, I bought an S2 594. Didn't like the neck, playing position, or pickups so I took it back. But I tried an SE 24 that I loved except for the pickups.
Totally agree on the soft case. As long as you can get the guitar in the coat closet or safely in an overhead, a soft case is fine. I've flown with hard cases and literally watched them fall off of the luggage belt...in the rain...at Laguardia.
Agree on the S2 also. They are GREAT guitars for the money, but it's no accident there's usually one or two things you wish were different (ahem...to make you get that Core eventually lol). I will say, the S2 594 I reviewed for PRS blew me away. I loved it (wish it had the Core pickups, like you said). Look out for that video coming up in a few weeks.
If people spent as much time practicing guitar as they did whining about the fretboard radius, they would not need to whine about the fretboard radius.
QED
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I love LOVE LOVE my Silver Sky!
Me too! What color?
@@TomButwin Frost white like yours. I just love it. It always inspires to play.
I’ve tried it and thought the tone was nice but did not like the radius. I got the Schecter Nick Johnston USA instead, it smokes this guitar. I’m a huge John Mayer fan btw.
I always use on the strat the middle pickup as the middle voice, and switch to neck and bridge depending on what you want. The middle voice is however the main departure point for me.
Great video Tom, thanks!
Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much for this video. I have been looking at these pretty hard and this will help me to decide to pull the trigger or not. I am going to try one before buying and then go used.
You’re welcome. Definitely go play a couple. There are slight changes over the years, but I think they’re all pretty great guitars. I bought mine used as well!
I have a Core PRS Custom 22 and the knobs are fairly smooth with low resistance. I like them a lot actually!
Must be a thing for PRS then! It’s definitely noticeable (to me) on the Core SS.
I justed purchased this guitar. I love it.
Congrats!
@@TomButwin Thanks
I play mostly PRS S2 satin standards and single cuts because they are just a solid all around quality and playability guitar. But I purchased a SE Silver Sky to review and compare to my mim Stratocaster. The Silver Sky quality fit and finish is better in every way . It sounds like a stratocaster but smoother and elegant. More evenly volume in every position. But for some reason I keep levitating back to the fender. I don’t know why. I don’t know if I’m just a traditionalist or just want to work harder at playing lol. I don’t have the same problem with Gibson. I haven’t touched my Les Paul since I bought my PRS single cut. I wonder if other players have this same thing going on? That may make a good Video for you. 👍✌️
I'm a HUGE fan of the S2 line, but I totally get what you're saying here. Tough to say. It's so situation and application driven with these things. They're all great instruments and can be inspiring. One thing I will say, is that the PRS's just feel more effortless than the Gibsons, in general. I'm sure there are examples where that wouldn't be true, but in my personal experience I've found that. Would be a good video! Adding it to the list.
I’m pleasantly surprised by tuning stability and the lack of harshness on the bridge pickup. On those fronts, my core SS is much better than my Strat
Tuning stability is second to none. I totally agree.
The Silver Sky is my dream guitar so this was really good to hear! I'm even more excited to save up for one now! Thank you! 💙
(P.S. I always love the John Mayer related content!)
Both the Core and SE are great guitars! You wouldn’t be disappointed with either, in my opinion. Thank you for watching!
I didn't like the neck radius on it, but maybe I'd get used to it over time. Do you know if it comes with hard nickel or regular nickel frets? Can't seem to get an answer online, and I know PRS uses hard nickel (almost as hard as stainless steel) on some of their higher end guitars.
Great question on the fret material. I can check into it and see what they say!
@@TomButwin oh, and I misspoke about the neck radius. I meant neck width. Felt like a Gibson.
To be earnest, the radius does not bother me one bit. It doesn’t hinder me and I haven’t choked out on bends. The fret size is no issue, the pickups sound good. I don’t think I had an issue with the knobs. I thought I wanted a shredders cut heel, I don’t lol. Thought I wanted a compound radius on it, I don’t. I thought I needs a higher output pickup in the bridge, I don’t Lol. At least not on this guitar. To have those things, I’ll just have a different guitars for those purposes.
Isn’t it crazy how what you think beforehand can compare to your actual experience? True enough you can find all of those things in other instruments.
Yep, I never bought the SS for the vintage vibe. I’ve been a PRS fan since 2003 and when they released the 503 I had tacken a break from playing so I missed out. I played one originally in 2019 and was more dumbfounded because of what it was. When I finally got my own understood everything that people were raving abourb
It works for everything I do as I play a lot clean and I “try” to have an Eric Johnson tone. If I need his I just use another guitar. 85 % of my sound is with single coils
I love single coils too! Definitely my go to.
Gig bag also has a hidden hook that slides out to hang it up.
Very clever.
I'm convinced the concern over fretboard radius lives only in their heads. I like 7.25 or 9.50, both are great and not THAT different to play.
Agreed. I thought I’d notice way more than I do!
As with anything in life,it's a personal preference,
I played a silver sky at Sweetwater's gear fest when they first came out, and I wasn't in love with it either. Opted for an Ernie ball music man. I could revisit a silver sky though.
I'd revisit it. I was very underwhelmed that first time, but admittedly, in a different place musically. So, that might have had something to do with it. When I got the one I have now, it was night and day to me. Absolute magic from when I took it out of the case. That Music Man is probably sweet, though! Hey, do you still have that Gibson Ranger?
@@TomButwin nah, I sold it. Love everything about it but the dealbreaker was the acoustic strings felt too tight, making it almost difficult to play/press down the strings. I even had 11's on it.
Totally agree on the string tension with that guitar. It’s SO odd.
Great video dude. Subbed.
Thanks, Dan!
Lol all the things you pointed out I actually really like.
I do too!
I went after every major guitar style other than strats for years. had MANY strats but sold them all. Bought the Silver Sky USA and never looking back. Just bought my second one too. Thinking of selling all my other guitars right now because these are all I want to pick up anymore.
I, too, share your love of the Silver Sky...and I swear it's not just my JM fanboy syndrome taking over! haha
@@TomButwin John who? I just love the guitar. Playing a Les Paul doesn't mean you ever listen to his music from the 50ies :)
To be fair, seems like a lot of higher end makers are switching to gig bags. Ernie ball looks to be transsitioning and I believe suhr gives gig bags
I think the reality is that the large majority of electric guitar owners don’t really use their guitars (or transport them) in environments where a hard case would add benefit. Now, acoustic guitars? Totally different animal. Helps stability temp and humidity.
Thank you so much! Rounded!
Does anyone know if the neck and middle pickups are the same on the Silver Sky and the Fiore? I've owned Fender Strats, Teles and bases since 1957 and to my ear, Fender Strat has lost the tone competition to PRS. I now own a '23 Fiore and the tone is everything that Fender should be (and once was, IMHO).
As far as I know, they are wound/voiced differently. What color is your Fiore? Love those guitars!
Hey Tom, I’m wondering if the finish on the back of the neck came off from playing or did you sand it down? I like the matte finish in the SE so I’m debating on doing that to my US model. Thoughts?
So far, the finish is still very much how it was from the factory with a nice gloss to it. No sign of wear yet for me! I have a Martin acoustic that I’ve really work the neck finish on, but that’s been over the course of 21 years…so, I’ve got a ways to go on my Silver Sky! I didn’t find the different finishes between the SE and Core too distracting, but the neck shapes are wildly different. That’s what I noticed.
So interesting how it’s the saying vs. gloss finish I notice more than the radius. Amazing guitar either way!!
It’s less the fretboard radius and more the shape of the back of the neck!
My guitar teacher shit all over my SS core. Said schechter or Ibanez make better S types and that I overpayed (i got a $1k discount on mine). Eh at the end of the day it's preference
I agree. A Squier CV Strat is more than enough to learn and get insanely good on…but we’d all rather search for and argue about gear than practice 😂 your teacher included, I guess. Lol
@@TomButwin dropped my teacher today.
does the neck and the fretboard feel like a vintage instrument? like a vintage strat? thats what im looking for, id be happy if anyone could help.
As far as shape/radius, it aims to emulate a ‘64 Strat (I think). So, in that way it does. However, the finish and new production aspects are impossibly to ignore, so in my opinion, it definitely leans toward being a more modern feel than anything. Comfortable and fast either way, though.
That soft case does not work in more dry climates. Therefore, if you buy a SS in a state like Colorado, you'll need to buy a real case and toss that gig bag into a closet to collect dust.
Great point. As a midwesterner, something I don’t have to worry about as much with my electrics.
Why they dont make guitars with full sz jumbos and stainless steel fretts
I’m not sure, but despite being way more durable, a lot of people don’t like the influence on tone stainless frets can have. So, I assume it’s that. As far as size, your guess is as good as mine.
Japanese made FGN
They're the budget Kings below 1000 bucks, tired of fenders dominance, glad FGN is getting traction and they're suhr specs
Just personally I can't do vintage spec guitars, the SS just doesn't work for me
Have they made the frets larger in 2023?
The frets got slightly larger in 2021. They went from 6230 to 6105.
err ..so much talk of the radius but you don't mention what it is
I’ll make a separate video on that topic! Great idea.
The fretboard radius is the curvature of the fretboard.
7.25" is the traditional radius of vintage Fender guitars. Modern Fender guitars have a 9.5" radius, some are even flatter.
On the other hand the traditional radius of Gibson guitars is 12".
Perfectly and simply laid out! I’ve got a video coming to explain just this.
Why not show the gigbag ?????
I didn’t have enough coffee to go get it and move the camera. It’s sweet though!
Does the gigbag is safe for checkin baggage in the plane?
In the cabin, absolutely. Definitely NOT for checking a bag to the cargo hold. That goes for most gig bags though. The SS in the gig bag is super compact and would fit in most overhead bins or closets on planes.
I have a 2018 and I love it
Nice! What color?
Tungsten
The Silver Sky is an excellent well made guitar , sad everyone makes a Fender better than fender , so consistent ! Once again Fender needs to study PRS and Suhr and take notes ,
There are some great things Fender is doing still, but for me there are SO many options when it comes to a Strat from them, that it's overwhelming. I love the fact that there's just the Silver Sky (either Core or SE, but still one model/config). Keeps it simple and let's you get to making music faster, rather than wading through the 9,000 different options and lines they have for Strats...not to mention the fact I just like the SS better. Suhr hasn't really spoken to me, but I've only played 2-3.
Hardtail?
It’s got a trem, but it’s flush against the body.
Two min in and I'm out. Small frets and an extreme radius...not for me. I don't even want the strings touching the board
Hey, I just made the video…not the guitar 😂
Lol..meant I was out of being interested in the guitar. Ur just being honest. Personally I love ss jumbo frets and nothing else.
Lol fair enough! Those tiny frets are definitely different. I have a Martin acoustic that has similar sized wire, so it wasn’t as jarring.
@@TomButwin personally I'm an 75% acoustic player and love my martins. But comparing any solid body electric to an acoustic is too much apples and oranges. First our martins have a very shallow radius, comparatively. Second I wouldn't think it would be hugely jarring just preference. When I got my first Parker fly in the 90s I found I could never go back to nickel frets in my electrics. Huge fan of John mayer, and I do like PRS, just not for me. But personally I'd take this over a fender all day long and twice in Sunday. Simply better QC, and more bang for ur buck
You’re probably right. That comparison is a stretch lol. Appreciate the comments and watching. Hope you’ll subscribe if you haven’t yet.
This sounds more like an ad to be honest
I wish they had paid me! Hasn’t happened yet. Paid for the guitar and these are my thoughts. I am a PRS/Mayer fan, so take that for what it’s worth.
A guitar so expensive, wich doesn't come with a hardcase.... Yeah, I know, many PRS lover will hate me, but... The idea isn't to build a better guitar than Fender, ok, they did it, but the idea is that Fender is and will always be an icon. It's the ''must have'' , besides its issues.
Yep boomer gonna boomer. This is exactly the attitude that keeps them profitable without actually having to innovate or make better product.
I can't get over the ugly headstock and cheapo plastic tuners. It looks aweful IMO
Have you played one?
I haven't, but would love to try one. Maybe it can change my mind. I'm a massive Mayer fan so it must be good to play his style...
Baloney...that guitar is not all that great..it's just a sales pitch...a Stratocaster wanna be 🤦♂️
Have you played one?
@@TomButwin...yes..I wasn't impressed at all
@middleton97 I felt that way the first time I played one and wrote it off. Then I picked up the one I ended up buying and it was a much different experience. To each their own, though!
Stop moving so much..relax....
I drink a lot of coffee. Sorry.
Stop being so critical. Relax.
biggest guitar disappointment of my career.Unless you give Paul 5 grand or more you get junk.period.
What specifically did you not like about it? Just curious.
Hahahahaha you cannot be serious.
It's my least favorite guitar. Sadly, I just don't like it even though it plays great and sounds great. I just don't like it. So I've got a new 2019 Silver Sky that has all of 15 minutes playing on it.
It happens. You either connect or you don’t with an instrument. Nothing wrong with that. What color?
@@TomButwin Golden Mesa. It's beautiful. My still go-to guitar is a 1988 PRS CE24 that I bought new and was my first great guitar. PRS definitely knows how to make quality.
Ordered an SE model from Amazon...18 in stock...yet Amazon says 1 month out! So much for 2 day shipping.
One month is pretty good these days! SEs are popular.
I've been playing Strats for exactly 50 years. Was going to get a 70th Anniversary AV Strat but found I was unimpressed. What happened to light weight ash? Have we used it all up? Found a Silver Sky online and bought it instead. 6.8 lbs. Moc Sand finish w/maple neck. I've been thinking about spending some time with one of these since they came out and finally pulled the trigger. Should be here by the weekend. I'm excited.
Keep me posted! Would love to know what you think when it arrives. Moc Sand is still the best color, in my opinion.
@@TomButwin Received guitar Friday. First thing I notice was the satin neck (maple fretboard) and the ultra thin finish on the body. No flaws in the build whatsoever. Plays and sounds fantastic. I have three Strats that I have kept over the years. So glad I bought this instead of the Anniversary. It's a Strat but then it's not. Something different. This is my second PRS purchase. Got a DGT Core model a couple of years ago which I absolutely love to play.
One more thing I would add. After playing this guitar plugged in for a while I would suggest experimenting with the volume and tone controls. Everything on "10" is a bit trebly. Nice to be able to go there, though, If desired.
