- Having done a couple of videos highlighting the image transfer technique using glossy magazine images, I am often asked if you can use home printed images. Today I show you how to use the same technique using laser prints or photocopies (please note: this does NOT work with inkjet prints).

Great video! a few other artist have always said that only coloured laser prints work - I was having trouble getting alot of my home print to transfer, I found that with a laser printer if I ran the same print through the machine twice this builds up a thicker layer of toner which helps to transfer the image. I have a HP LaserJet M110we (black and white) and just use supermarket own paper (morrison 80GSM 500 page pack) and cass art own acrylic paint. If you cannot get your home laser prints to work, try running them through the printer again, tis could help get that thicker layer of toner for the transfer.
I am so glad I stumbled across your tutorials...I am a beginner! You are so easy to follow...thank you!
You are so welcome!
Do you use regular copy paper or cardstock for the laser printer
tutorials in this field in scrapbooking in general, hype that there is someone else excellent in the field.
Thank you, that looks great. I do mine different , but I will try your way for a change. I just use my gelli plate and design art , let dry then pick a black image out of my photos and just laser print it right on to my art work.
This sounds interesting but the image would look a bit crisper ?

I do this as well, but I laser print the image on first, them print over it.
finally ! someone explains the science of toner .. why this works 👍🙏😍
This is amazing. My husband rolled his eyes when I went on a mad dash to the recycling bin 😂
Hi Teresa. Could you mention what type of 'Normal' photocopying paper you have used? I'm using geli plate with Amsterdam acrylic and a Samsung laser printer but so far no images even when using a thin layer of acrylic. I'm starting to think it's the paper that's important, I've tried lots of different types of paper and can get the usual image transfer from magazines but not from a laser print. Any ideas.
I use printer paper I pick up in the supermarket, under their own brand. Nothing special.
I think it's the density of toner left behind by your copier that matters more than paper. Have you tried printing a test pattern, something that's just bold black and white?
Hi Teresa!! Please, I've a question: do you always use acrylic paints? Which kind of paint do you usually use? Thank you very much! ❤️
I really enjoyed your video Theresa. However, I can’t find out were to get prints like you used. Can you please fell me?
Link is in the video description.
My regular copy paper is not working. I’m wondering if a glossy paper would work as the toner would actually be sitting on top of the paper and not absorbed into the fibers??? I’m frustrated. Some magazines work but no success with my photo copies. 😢😢😢
Thank you! So wonderful, and I'm new to printing. Might take the leap. Great music as well.
Hi Teresa! I know you can also pull the transfer up immediately (while it's still wet). Have you tried it that way? Just curious. :-) But I think I'd be happy if I could just ever get my image to transfer to the plate at all - let alone worry about how I pull it up!
Great tip!
Question; Can you please tell me what kind of black paint you're using?I had old black paint that worked beautifully but that ran out ...now i cant find a black paint that works. please help. Thank you
I probably used DecoArt Americana acrylic.
So I printed images on the printer from work which I'm assuming is laser but the transfers don't work AT ALL and I'm soooo very sad aboutit. Any idea what laser printer is best to use for successful transfers????
Hey :) if I do this, but instead of using a gelli plate I would use a glass plate, does still work?
I am not sure. You have to let the paint dry on the plate and I don't know if it would release from a glass plate in the same way.
Hi Teresa, thank you for this video. I'm wondering what printer you were using for this technique?
I have a Samsung M2020.
Thank you so much Teresa, I really think 🤔 those prints came out really really well.....I haven’t tried this yet, and as I’ve got an inkjet printer, I’ll have to stick to glossy magazine prints. Stay safe and well too xxx Mags
Thank you!
Thank you for sharing this technique it looks amazing! Do you need a high end laser printer for this process or will any simple home laser printer work? Any special paper? Thanks again!
Teresa I am new here but this video was perfect for me! I came to rewatch the one with the magazine transfers and wondering if it would work on photos from the printer. A friend of mine did me a huge huge favor and I had no idea how to thank him. Then I thought geewiz I could make him a piece of art. And, after thinking about it I thought: Could I take a photo of him fishing (that I already have) and work it like a magazine photo. Thank you!!
Glad it was helpful!
The first layer (black one) how thick do you put it on? I have tried both thick and thin and two kinds of paints. but none of them work. Yours came out perfectly. I can barely get any part of the image, or nothing at all. I do appreciate your video and explanation, but it didn't work for me. Don't know what I am doing wrong.
Really good video what paint can u use,I tried couple different paints but none works for me,my printer is Samsung laser ,dont know what I'm doing wrong 😢
I made sure the black layer was quite thick, and the second layer very thin. The first couple I tried were a bit patchy, then they seemed to work just fine - I think sometimes the plate gets better the more you use it. Have you tried conditioning your plate with baby oil between uses? I apply a few drops and rub it over with a paper towel before storing the plate.
I tried using xerox bold paper which is pretty glossy designed to make colors pop. I couldn’t get it to work well until I used that paper. And then I found I needed to press more lightly when laying on the laser print. Once image transferred, I needed to let the print set a little longer before pulling__
Thank you! Could you share what kind of ink you are using?
My printer is a Samsung M2020.
I'm going to try this for the first time... wish me luck!
Can you tell me why none of my image transfers? The paper just sucks up all the paint and leaves nothing behind to transfer. I’m laser printing my own images on regular printer paper and using Liquitex Basics acrylic.
I have no idea why, sorry. I see a lot of discussion on FB regarding differences in printers/paper/paint and can not figure out why it works for some and not others.
Great tutorial! I would love to get the images, however the link you have provided takes one to a questionable site but at any rate, definitely not Andy Skinners.
Can you pull the image right away without letting it dry on the gelli plate & adding new colors on top?
Is it better to set the printer to best quality, or will draft do?
High quality
@@TeresaMorgan brilliant. Thank you.
Best to use non copyrighted pics and acknowledge song by Candelion. Artists should value the work of all artists.
Well the photos used in these magazines are copyrighted aren’t they? That’s why I don’t understand why these artists can use these photos and gel plates
Hello Tressa could I do this using images of my art works and family photos.
If they are printed on a laser printer, of course.
Yes, as long as they a high contrast black and white. If there is a lot of grey/mid tones then the image will not be clear.
As usual learned a lot. Thanks. Marion
My pleasure!
I’ve got a brother laser printer and none of my prints transfer. Regardless of contrast, regardless of paint dryness, regardless of bind time- the image never sticks to the plate. Can you help me figure out why?
Sorry, I do not know why you are having problems. The technique can be hit and miss.
@@TeresaMorgan I and my friend both have Brother printers and cannot get a print off them
Do You have to adjust the black density level of the laser printer?
I didn't - this is just on the standard setting. If you make it higher quality you should get even better results.
Teresa Morgan ok thanks 😺
Very nice. Thank you.
I’m surprised that the baby oil doesn’t make the plate resistant🎨
העבודות שלך מקסימות! גם אני מעבירה הדרכות בתחום הזה בסקראפ בכלל, הייף שיש עוד מישהו מעולה בתחום.
good video - thanks.
Very well explained! Thank you.
You are welcome!
You can use inkjet images too but you need to press it on a clean gel without any paint then paint over with the colours for the background.
Ottimo video, chiaro.....ma pur avendo seguito le istruzioni, non rimane nemmeno un segno dell'immagine (fresca di stampa). provato più volte, niente! sono disperata.,,,:(((

Thanks for the video, looks great. Sad, but I can't transfer the images. The paper absorbs all the color from the tile. I use Amsterdam acrylic paints. Maybe you should try another brand of color. I was also thinking of trying glossy paper on a laser printer.
Same here, I've tried three types of acrylic and different papers and there is zero resist. All the paint is uniformly absorbed. Some people have tried reprinting the image several times or increasing the toner density in the printer driver (if available).
I have printed the image twice, then I will succeed. At times, it can be tricky
@@Mekchanoid Yeah, not working here. So their must be a hack. It must be a material issue
@@TheDudeway I've moved on to transferring laser print with silica-backed paper onto a layer of acrylic medium. Much more reliable and you get much more detailed transfers.
@@Mekchanoid hmm...Ibillustrate a lot digital. Having some fine line works which I wanted to transfer on the gelli to achieve a more natural aesthetic.
Hi Teresa! Thank you for this! I've also seen people pull the print off immediately (while it's still wet). Have you tried it that way?
I prefer to pull the print in one go. But there's no reason why you can't pull the background colour first, then the image second without waiting for it to dry.
I love it !!!! 🤪😍🤩👍 thank you for sharing 👍😃😘
Thank you and very informative! One question how do you go about conditioning with baby oil? How much and how do you wipe it on? Don’t want to oversaturate I guess?
I apply a few drops and wipe it over with a paper towel, then store my plate between two sheets of printer paper.
If you do it the other way, the background first and then the transfer you get a better result. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for the tip!
I can’t wrap my mind around this- can one of you elaborate? You’d put down the background color on the plate and pull that print, then put more paint on the plate and lay the laser copy on and let it dry. Then ??
@@LarkOnWheels then remove the laser print from the plate, your plate now has the transferred image that the laser print resisted. now you can add paint to the plate, over the (usually black) transferred image (so you haven’t pulled the transfer, you need more wet paint to pull). so add your paint layer on the plate over the transfer, then pull that onto your paper that you pulled a normal mono background on. just helps the transfer show up better.
Thanks for the baby oil tip!
You are so welcome!
cool look!
Wow these are amazing,,,,,xxxx 🎨🌈👏💕😊
Thanks so much 😊
Have you ever tried it with a color laser print?
It's not working for me somehow. I used a laser and tried the inkjet. All failed. Just some ghosting which is not very satisfying 😕
Wonderful thank you 🙏💖🌷
Cool, thanks for sharing :)
Thanks for watching!
Do you have a webpage Theresa? Judging by your accent I don't live far from you and wonder if you do workshops.
I don't have a web page as such. I have a blog that I tend to now only use for uploading templates and patterns for my YT projects.Sorry, but I don't teach workshops. I used to run workshops at the craft shop where I work but all that stopped with Covid, and it looks unlikely that they will start up again as there have been several staff cuts in the last year. I live in Newcastle under Lyme, Staffs - where are you?
