HOW TO DETHATCH YOUR LAWN JOHN DEERE DE THATCHER RAKE FOR GRASS

  • Watch how to dethatch your grass in your yard to make sure it becomes healthy and green in the springtime. De thatching your lawn is a great way to pull out all the dead grass, clippings, debris and other junk that has accumulated in your lawn throughout the mowing season. This is also a very good grass and soil conditioner and lawn aerator.
    This is a John Deere Dethatcher rake that I am using on my 1987 John Deere 185 Hydro. it has a 17 HP Kawasaki engine in it. So this lawnmower has plenty of power to push this rake around. You need to have a riding lawn mower that has enough power to be able to push tines through your lawn and not get stuck or hung up on the roots. Otherwise it will take all day to do.
    After using this John Deere De thatcher, you will want to Fertilize, seed, or throw out some lime to keep the grass healthy and grow stronger. This is something you need to do every year or every other year if your lawn is in good condition.
    There are other dethatchers out there that pull out the thatch in your lawn and some work better than others. This specific one just happens to work for my lawnmower. You might even have a better one than this. Let me know what kind you have.

    Have you considered an electric push dethatcher? They appear to pull a higher amount of thatch per pass from the videos I have seen. Might take longer but I think it would be more thorough. Would be nice to see someone do a side by side comparison.

    Nice video, I like the idea of the unit being out front on the tires.
    What is your opinion on pull behind plug aerators?
    Is it too much stress on the hydros?
    Is a power walk plugger more efficient?
    Doing a lot of research, and it seems that aerating your lawn is huge!
    I plugged my lawn last year for the first time and what a major difference in the lawn.
    I have an older 16 hp hydro Toro tractor and it pulled it fine. You could hear the hydro working a little
    harder than usual.

    • @TheRykerDane
      @TheRykerDane  7 лет назад

      push or pull I think either way you are going to put some strain on the hydro. But if the stress is on the front end, then you don't have the weight on the rear axle plus the driving force going on at the same time. I have pulled a plugger before and it definitely is working hard.

    • @algorel4763
      @algorel4763 7 лет назад

      TheRykerDane I think I will stick to the older toro rear engine rider I also have with gear selection.
      I am staring the think the Hydros are over rated! I have no problem pulling the aerator with the Toro
      gear tranny. I was told by a dealer the manufacturers went over to hydros because they are cheaper
      to manufacturer than the gear tranny with a clutch.

    • @mommabee3793
      @mommabee3793 5 лет назад

      We have a spike aerator that we tow around with our John Deers X300, LX173 and JD180. I prefer using the LX173 or JD180 as they are manual 5 speed transmissions and not hydrostatic trannies that might create internal heat. I believe the plug aerator does a better job ... the ground has to be water sodden and soft for either to perform properly ... and don't drive too fast! If the ground is too dry you will not get any penetration. Howard

  • @ChandraSGanne
    @ChandraSGanne 10 лет назад

    Thanks for the video man! After running de-tacher, do you manually rake and bag all the junk or bag it using mower...look like a big lot and raking manually may take lot of time.

    • @TheRykerDane
      @TheRykerDane  10 лет назад

      Well if you have a bagger system to put on your mower then use that route. But I don't have a bagger so raking it is no big deal. Plus it is usually really dry grass thatch so you can just pile it up behind your house and burn it. Otherwise you have to stuff it into some trash bags for the garbage man. If you have a good rake, it will get most of it up and out of your lawn too.

  • @chriswonsmos1007

    I'm curious about one thing.... There is actually a handle on the left side of the tractor for raising and lowering 'implements'. Why the arrangement on the right side?

    • @TheRykerDane
      @TheRykerDane  5 лет назад +1

      I am not sure about that one

    • @mommabee3793
      @mommabee3793 5 лет назад

      @@TheRykerDane The left side handle raises and lowers the deck on my LX173 and JD180. My X300 is via a left hand foot pedal. When I use the de-thatcher on the JD180 I also bag what is broken free from the lawn with my 48 inch mower deck. You will be emptying the bags frequently, they fill fast! Great suggestion in the video ... criss cross your lawn to remove more thatch. When all thatch is cleaned up I use my aerator in a criss cross pattern also. GREAT VIDEO! WELL DONE! Howard.

    I have 3 acres of old cow pasture that is terribly bumpy and uneven. Can one of these be used to level out my lawn? I tried a roller and they don't work worth a darn. I am killing my back. Is there some attachment that will make my lawn even? I do not care if it tears the lawn up. Would this work or should I just till the whole acreage under and re-plant seed. Got to be a easier way

    • @ousamaabdu794

      Randy Hauck
      A dethatcher won't do anything at all to fix bumpy/uneven ground.
      Three acres is a good sized lot
      You can rent a tractor with a tiller attachment then after it it tilled up, throw a roller with some water in the roller and that will level out the dirt that has been tilled.
      Another option:
      There are plenty of excavation companies that dump dirt for free by the dump truck load. A dump truck is any where from 15 to 20 yards. That amount of acreage would require at least 30 to 70 loads to even it out. With that many loads, not only would you get the dirt for free, they would probably level it out for free as well, as it costs a pretty penny to dump dirt. It would be a win win.

      I found mine on Craigs list ... $80 is a decent price to pay ... which is what I found my 48 inch lawn roller for. The roller fills with water and its only used when the ground is water sodden. I paid $100 for the John Deere spike aerator, again the ground has to be water sodden for it to get a decent depth with the spikes. Howard
