  • It's not about the size of the hamster, it's about how much enrichment they need in order to be kept stimulated to stop boredom and create a happy thriving hamster. Having only a wheel, hideout, food & water is not properly caring for your hamster.

@donner9154 i used to work at pet store and we had those cages. I explicitly said to people that those cages are only for emergency if the animal is sick and needs to be in different cage from other animals for short period of time but people still bought those as "proper cages" even tho they were not even cheaper. I even witnessed someone buying this small transport plastic box for a gerbil. Then I refused to sell the animal to them but they went to another pet store and bought it there saying the box is only for transport...

Same with birds. I have two parakeets and they have a massive cage. They need big cages to be able to fly around when they are not out to get exercise. My birds are constantly chasing each other around my cage and having fun bc THEY HAVE ROOM! A tiny bird cage cannot sustain the lifestyle a bird needs. And before I chose birds as my pet. I was gonna get a hamster and I did a bunch of research on them so I know what they need too. I love your cage design. I'm sure your hamster loves it! ❤️ Thank you for being a good pet owner 😁

I would’ve loved to give them more space but as I can’t at the moment I make sure they have all the enrichment I could possibly fit in their cages and that they get new things often. After she had chewed on the bars a lot and escaped a few times, I buckled down and did a lot more research. We got her a 400sq inch cave with two floors, tubes, and multiple stimulating toys, a wheel etc. she was so much happier. no more chewing or trying to escape. If the pet store hadn't misinformed us by encouraging small cages and tubes it never would have begun that way. I hope that they are banned at some point.

I recently rescued a gerbil from a 6 year old that was scared of him. Gerbil was shaking and spasm-y. He moved very jerkingly and was the first gerbil I ever met that was an active biter. I understood why the child was scared of him. He was being kept in a cage like the first one.
I switched him out to a bigger and better enclosure with enrichment elements and let him settle in. Within two days, he had calmed down, didnt seem to be hyperventilating anymore and wasn't jerking around everytime he moved. All I had done at that point was relocate him and it was enough that his entire personality chaged. In leas than a week, he went from greeting me with bites to lighter exploratory nibbles and we were able to actually meet each other finally.
The enclosure you keep your pets in greatly influences who they can be. If they never feel safe, they will be in a constant state of fight/flight/freeze and you will never actually get to know the real critter and neither of you will enjoy the experience.

Think of these cages as houses. That is a very small house of anyone that size.
Also those small cages are for transporting them to and from the vets or holding them while you clean stuff out. I prefer something bigger when cleaning but still.

That cage is what I call a sick cage or a end of life cage when they don't move much and need to be monitored hourly.

Remember smaller cages/ carrier/terraniums etc for temporary use for emergencies or transport them to the vet. Never go bare minimum for animals always go for largest home you can create for them.

A few days ago our Hamster (Cookie) passed, I wasn't well educated until a few month ago but we just couldn't get the room for a large cage, so sadly he had to have something similar to this cage in size. He's last Hamster I'll properly ever own until I can get the proper room for one. Thanks for the education!

That small cage is only fit for transporting to the vets or to put hammo in whilst cleaning main cage. The full habitat shown at the end is beautiful ❤

Even tho hamsters are small they need a huge cage with at least 6 inches of bedding to be able to burrow

I hate these cages so much. What i hate even more is children abusing their hamsters cuz they don't know how to properly take care of them, and end up treating them like that one to your annoying cousin found. These cages are barley livable, and im so glad your teaching people the right way to take care of them. In my opinion though, ones bigger than this woukd be good to use as temporary areas when sick or smth and they can't be in their usuall invirement, yet still make sure to make the space comfy

Mine had a whole villa with tunnels connected to different cages. I loved to switch it up sometimes and he loved to discover. My husband has reptiles now. I still love to design their enclosures so it looks like a rainforest❤️

I just got a hamster yesterday and at petsmart they told us none of their enclosures were actually good for hamsters and they recommended we bought a big tote and honestly the best decision ever, we could fit a lot more hiding spots and a bigger wheel, plus with all that extra bedding he has made another room out of tunnels in less than a day
