Thank you so much , Mr. Letterman, for the honor!!
The Goodbye Hello Deli Fanfare by the Late Show really made us cry!!
Always,
Rupert Jee & May Chin
Hello Deli
Happy retirement!
You and Rupert must be very special people for that group to do that. All the best in the future! ❤
I was there in the booming years and again last February. I spent 10 minutes talking to Rupert about the old days and enjoyed the conversation immensely. I’m sure he’s had the same one with 1000’s of people but it felt genuine and sincere. I will miss seeing what once was. I also was happy to see muchibar and sarajewel (butchered I know) as I wondered what had happened to them! Enjoy your retirement!!
I grew up watching your skits with my dad, and cherish those memories. Happy retirement!!!
Congratulations on your retirement, Rupert and May! What a "deli"-ghtful sendoff from an obviously grateful Late Show family. Wishing you the same joy in retirement that you gave us viewers all those years!😊
Here is a message from Rupert and May they asked we help get out there:
* MANY THANKS! *
( from the Hello Deli )
Dear Late Show Family,
We send our heartfelt thanks to Dave for his gracious and generous kindness; to you, Walter
, Nancy & the LS gang for your impeccable planning and HARD WORK. The celebration was a memorable goodbye and more so a
sentimental reunion of the Letterman Family.
Walter, thanks for your great MC- hosting. The
warm and funny speeches from Tom, Kathy, Mike, Chris and Tanya touched us all.
We were so pleased by the video presentations
from Jill, Donick, Jon, Steve and of course the
great Mr. Letterman!
And Matt, it meant so much to us that you came from London, even though a Rupert Jee T shirt was a meager compensation. Loving thanks go to all who travelled long distance to be with us.
Paul, we cannot thank you enough for the support, on
& off camera, you have given us through the years. Your musical performance, enhanced by the Vegas- style dancers livened our celebration all the more!
How lucky we were to be among the sharpest minds and hardest workers of the entertainment industry of our Country! Thank you all for honoring us, giving us a journey that dreams are made of!
Our love goes out to all of you!
Always,
Rupert and May
Hello Deli NY
Rupert & May: Bless you both! Pastor Greg.
We could not be happier for the celebration of the journey Rupert and May have been on this past 30+ years. Being able to be a part of that evening was an extreme honor. Rupert, we love you, thank you for sponsoring our show, and of course an even bigger thanks for the hundreds of appearances and thousands of laughs you provided.
Canada represent.
@@BearbearbearbearbearbearRarrrr and Mike does. Every chance he gets.
And he's still not quite sure that his part in it all was "funny worthy." He was always a bit outside of what Letterman humor was. Made him all the funnier. Took a year of force-feeding him The Offce before the belly-laughs began. Sheese.
Thank you all for allowing us fans to be a part of this retirement! With all the staff moment videos, it feels like one big family!
Couldn’t agree more.
A few generations of famly gathered there that night!
This is really sweet. Rupert was such a great sport…thanks for the laughs and enjoy retirement!
I got to meet Rupert back in 2003. He was nice enough to take a picture with me. The sandwiches were amazing!!! He's the real deal.❤
Even though he did that with tens of thousands of folks over the years, he made everyone feel so special and gave them an individual moment like the one you described. What a beautiful thing.
Rupert deserves all the happiness in the world 🎉🎉🎉
And he is very excited for his next chapter but will miss the fans coming to say hi.
If this channel has revealed a "secret" about the show, it's that you're all the absolute sweetest group of people. Congrats and thank you to Rupert and May!
The worldwide Pants crew are a family. :)
Very kind of the Late Shows to do this for them and very kind of them to share it with all of us! Congrats, Rupert and May!
These 41 minutes are better than anything that's been on in late night television since Dave turned the lights out.
Could not agree more. This channel is gold, and in the case of this video, emotional gold.
Didn’t think I get choked up watching this but here I am. I met Rupert a couple of times and he is the most sweetest man. Bless his heart
Called in for a coffee while the show was in hiatus July 2011. Rupert was exactly the same in person as on the show. Such a nice guy. Enjoy your retirement. 🥳
So many folks had amazing experiences like this one. What a great communal thing to be a part of.
Bravo to all the Letterman staff who put this tribute to Rupert together. Such hilarious memories. Love ya' Rupert -- you literally haven't aged all these years. Thanks for all the laughs since I was a kid! 🎉🎉❤
It was produced with love :)
Getting to meet Rupert back in 2013 when I went to see a Late Show taping was the highlight of my NY trip! Good luck man!
SO many people tell us the same thing. Rupert and May provided a Letterman experience for folks whether they say the show or not.
Letterman staff are a class act for putting this retirement party together for Rupert and May and then sharing it with the fans. Hats off!!
I was the the same thing, the total opposite of the Fallon staff, apparently.
The staff were all fabulous, and many hadn’t been in the theater since the last Late Show in 2015
CLASS ACT!
I loved Rupert's segments as a kid. I live near the Hello Deli and would see Rupert quietly walking to work during the pandemic. I've never wanted to bother him -- because I'm a New Yorker and don't bother celebrities -- but always felt a little starstruck seeing him. This icon of my childhood/adolescence. Haven't seen him in a while and I guess this is why. Good to see that they're going to be enjoying a sexy new life in The Villages.
He always says hello to anyone who calls out his name. It's very sweet how he says, "Hi" to anyone who passes and notices him. Very low-key, very polite.
This brought me nothing but tears of joy and happiness of fond memories with Dave and the neighborhood. Thank you Dave for all the great memories.
Couldn't get tickets while in NYC but did get to the Hello Deli and got a picture and a T shirt, thanks Rupert.
They provided a Letterman experience for so many who didn’t get to see the show
@@thelettermanpodcastyesssssss
Love you Rupert! I met you on a trip to New York in 1992...and, of course, had to visit the Hello Deli. Bought a hoagie and a t-shirt. You were so kind, humble and graciously took a photo with me and my girlfriend. Good luck Rupert and May in Retirement. Love Ya!
Thanks Rupert for all the classic moments! You were always a favourite part of the show for me.
That was beautiful :). We all felt, undeservedly, like we as viewers were part of the family and seeing the affection that you all have for each other is really touching to those of us who don't deserve it :).
Now it’s our turn to give back to all those who created the amazing body of work by watching and reliving our favorite moments, and sharing them with the next generation.
@@thelettermanpodcast just found out you existed. Following now. Watched Dave for 22yrs in Adelaide Australia. Miss the show so much. But loving this RUclips channel.
@@jimmy8669 thanks so much for the kind words! Lower your expectations and you will enjoy us just fine :)
@@jimmy8669 I am from an island in Greece where many of the inhabitants took jobs in Australia to better their lives. I KNEW more than 20 years ago that people love The Late Show, from conversations with islanders who worked in Australia. I took Rupert to this island, and the non-Greek Australian family next to us at the restaurant stared, waited politely for us to finish dinner, then approached and identified Rupert. He was in complete shock. This was a vacationing family who told him that Dave was king in Australia. Many others from my island who came back for the summers told me the same!
@@thelettermanpodcast Keep your important part going, Mke!
Fighting tears the entire video
🎉 The fans needed this closure! I’m so glad that you all came together to celebrate Rupert and May’s retirement. I was feeling so sad, because I’d assumed that, since the Late Show with David Letterman is no longer in production, Rupert wouldn’t get the sort of big send off that he deserves. 🎉
Rupert said it correctly: The gathering was just as much a warm reunion of GREAT colleagues who had not seen each other since 2015 and before. What a sight! Rupert tries not to show it, but he has been deeply sorrowful since Dave and Company left the building. He loved those people.
Mujibur and Sirajul are there! So good to see them!

I'm not crying....you're crying... 😭 Best of luck to Rupert and May. Thank you for all the laughs, and enjoy retirement.
It was an emotional evening to say the least :)
Yeeesssss!!! Absolutely phenomenal. That is a proper send off to Rupert. Had never heard of May before, but I see her now! The respect and love in that room was palpable. Geez, Mr. Letterman, thank you and your team for recognizing, appreciating, highlighting and loving the working people. I guess it helps a lot when it is May and Rupert. I hope they never have to make a sandwich again. Uh, that was simply amazing. To see everyone there. Still making me laugh.
It’s fitting that the channel shared this event with the world. So many came to see the Deli over the years.
Glad to see a glimpse of Barbara Gaines on the Barbara Gaines Show! And DONZ! The Archivist!
This was amazing to see. Although I started watching Letterman kind of late (March 2011), you will not find anyone nicer than Rupert and May. The Hello Deli will certainly be missed and definitely won't be forgotten. I wish I was there, but thanks for the memories.
P.S. I loved Paul's musical number at the end.
He was singing new lyrics to the tune of ‘Hello Dolly’ :)
Congrats Rupert and May! This brings back so many memories. I started watching Dave when I was 12 in 1982. It was the funniest thing on TV and you guys helped make it so. Mujibur and Sirajul!!!! You all made me laugh so much and helped shape my absolutely weird sense of humor. Thank you. ❤
Edit: Still can't figure out why Paul toned-down his suit for this!?🤣
The dancers made up for it.
Thank you so much for recording and showing us this! I got emotional. All the best Rupert!
This was great..... I got to see the Late Show live twice....so much fun.... and I got to eat at the Hello Deli.... I miss the show so much....got hooked on Dave way back when he was on early and was growing sea monkeys...Rupert's skits were hilarious on the show...... glad Dave continues to give us a little update here and there....Letterman was the best show EVER... 💖💝💖💝💖💝💖
You are correct, Chris. BEST SHOW EVER.
If Rupert never contributed anything other than "Guess What's On My iPod" he still would have been one of the show's greatest gifts. Seems clear this show was a family that found an excuse to come together again. Really heartwarming all around.
Exactly. A reunion.
Letterman was a staple in my teens and twenties... miss entertainment like this. Good to see good people succeeding GodSpeed, Rupert Jee!
There is nothing like it anymore. Good thing we have this channel, as well as Don Giller. Ours is ok after viewing the formers.
This is fantastic. So lovely. Congrats to Rupert and May!
I will never forget the skit where he was the super rude waiter at some outdoor cafe. That took guts. Happy retirement Rupert.
The California video shown on the tribute ended with all their hands in yellow gloves with their thumbs in glasses of water to tribute the moment you are talking about.
I think rather than raise a glass toasting Rupert…Stick a thumb in it instead. 👍
What a great tribute to May and Rupert. So many unique things on the Late Show that made it worth watching. Thanks Dave!
And thanks to Worldwide Pants for putting it on.
Thanks, Dave!
Late Show with Dave had a ton of great recurring guests, and Rupert was one of the best.
He was featured in 10% of all Late Shows! Amazing!
This was so sweet! Cheers, Rupert & May!!
I remember eating at the Hello Deli twice. Once, I got a picture with Ruppert and the late Alan Caulter. ❤
Have a wonderful retirement, and I'm glad almost everyone from the show was able to attend. Hello Deli and the Ed Sullivan Theater and Dave were must see every time I traveled to New York.
This was *great!*
*Thanks for sharing!!*
Best wishes to Rupert and to May!!!
This was really nice ❤ You deserved it Rupert. Congratulations to you and May!!!! ❤
I had the honor of meeting with Rupert when I came down to see the Late Show in August 1997. Still have my picture with him framed on the wall. Have also kept my autographed T-shirts from the Hello Deli. Was such a big part of my teenage years. I'm now a grown man watching this with a tear in my eye. Thank you for sharing this with the fans. Happy retirement Rupert!
I got food from Rupert a few times, such a nice guy, would talk to you and make you feel like a star.
He made everyone feel listened to, and did such a good job of including people.
What an end to an era! Grew up with Rupert & May being an always looked-forward-to segment. Kind souls we will miss!
Don Giller sighting!
I used to stop in to the Hello Deli on the way to work (always great soup) and when the news came out that Letterman would be moving to the Ed Sullivan Theater I told Rupert that Dave would make him famous. Rupert (who I don't think had ever heard of Letterman) didn't believe me, but I think time has proven me correct.
Wow! What a cool story! And you were prophetic!
I really love whoever is putting these clips together. Such craftsmanship.
The Worldwide Pants team is the tops.
I agree with everyone that it was a privilege for us fans to have a window into this retirement celebration. I think via this and through his appearances on the show and other interviews etc. you get a sense of Rupert as a very warm and down to earth kind of guy. It appears that the same can be said for his partner May. Rupert certainly provided us with wildly entertaining moments. However on top of that it is remarkable that through this RUclips channel the Letterman culture keeps carrying on and we have the opportunity to enjoy not only the assembled clips every day but new material, reflections from staff, etc. It's all really great. Thank you.
I loved watching Rupert on the late show. I wish we could do it all again. Thank you for allowing us to participate in your retirement show. All the very best for your retirement Rupert and May 🤩
Donnz giving the finger. Love it! Congrats Rupert and May!
Loved the shoutout to Don!
beautiful and well-deserved send-off! The Late Show seriously could not have been so great without Rupert Jee and the Hello Deli
What a sweet warm delightful get together of the " Letterman " family! Lovely tributes from everyone, even Paul, and dancing girls
It was a magical night, and it’s so great it got to be shared!
Congrats to Rupert! Stopped in myself and he was nice enough to pose for a photo.
Dave apparently was busy filming an episode of American Pickers. Seriously, congrats, Rupert and May. Happy retirement!
Yeah , but now sales of Chevrolet bike wheels will go through the roof
I think Dave knows when to stay away, so that others can shine.
What nice people.
What a treat to be able to see this celebration. Happy retirement Rupert and May!
I will admit to being one of those people who wanted the Letterman experience, but couldn't get in to see the show, because I was visiting New York on a Sunday. The Hello Deli was open though, and Rupert himself served me a sandwich. And yes, he is the nicest guy, and that's an experience I will always remember. Thanks Rupert and May.
We have had many, many people offer similar experiences. As our usually daft host noted in a surprisingly insightful way, Rupert and May provided ‘Letterman experiences’ to thousands of folks who missed seeing the show over the years. What a legacy to leave. :)
Aww man... thanks so much for posting this! So great to see everybody together. Loved the toast with the thumb-in rubber gloves .. ha ha ha! Peace and love to Rupert and May and everyone who was able to be there. I will always go back in memory to Rupert and all of you for making me laugh through my life.
Core memories indeed.
I loved the old bits where Rupert wore an earpiece and would interact with people, repeating what Dave said to him.
‘Fun with Rupert’ was one of the best bits of all time on television.
@@thelettermanpodcastThen that frickin knife.😔
Congratulations on your retirement!!!!🎉🎉🎉🎉
Very nice. And you know the only reason Dave didn't participate is because doing so would have distracted from the celebration for Rupert and May. A class act from all players. So happy to see Paul.
Real nice tribute to a great, down-to-earth guy. Got to meet Rupert a couple of times when I visited New York.
So nice! Congrats on your next chapter Rupert! All the best to you!
What a special treat to be 'invited' to this gathering. Know that there are indeed "tens of thousands" of us who cherish these same memories. Thanks for those and for allowing us to walk down memory lane alongside the LS fanily.
No other late show will ever do stuff like this
Today's episode of 'Letterman' is brought to you by Chevrolet Bicycle Wheels.
Love that Rob Burnet is there, also love how excited he was to get a free t-shirt. Think her could afford one or two of those and on his own 😊. Such a cool video.
Awesome memories. Happy retirement Rupert and May !!
Wish I could like this more! Congratulations Rupert & May! #thebest ❤🎉
Yes! Where is the ‘double-like’ button?
That was fantastic............fun with Rupert is my all time favorite.
My wife asked me what I was watching. I couldn’t answer because I was all choked up. So happy they got this retirement send off.
The level of cool is off the chart… so many people showed up. So many great episodes… you could tell Rupert and May were really touched by it all…. The Letterman show been off air 8 years… outside of Conan there hasn’t been anything even close in late night TV.
It’s a club we are all a part of and one we don’t want to let go of.
It was a dizzying experience being in that famous lobby that night. The level of cool (and warm-hearted kindness) made the event one that you keep trying to relive in your mind.
ok. I am half way through, so many thoughts and feelings. Had to pause to say, "Can anyone give Mae and Rupert a chair?"
Sirajul!! Mujibur!!
Mujibur and Sirajul! MUJIBUR and SIRAJUL!!! 😃😃😃
Rupert was always great, one of my favorites. Such a nice humble guy. I have one of those shirts!
HELLO DELI IS A WONDERFUL MEMORY FOR THE PEOPLE.
Just beautiful.
This is awesome. So glad Rupert was a part of the Meet the Neighbours segment. He was one of the best parts of Dave's show at CBS.
It’s great to see you in such wonderful shape and thank you soo much for all your wonderful interviews and fabulous shows which I enjoy sooo much!Thank you always!
He doesn’t look like he’s aged a day.
Dave, you're scaring all the village kids in Wyoming with that beard. Now you really are looking like Buddy Ebsen 😅 Miss ya' my lifelong TV buddy...❤
Pure Quality. Great Memories!
I had the pleasure of meeting Rupert in 2013, he was the nicest guy. Enjoy retirement.
Paul’s comment about “we all know why it had to end… the guy with the knife”… intriguing
I can't be this old.
this is so wholesome, I truly enjoyed when Rupert was featured on Dave's show.
It was a family reunion/retirement party
This was an excellent idea to share this good bye, brings so many pleasant memories . Many blessings to Rupert and May
Goodbye Deli. Hello retirement. Thanks for the memories, Rupert.
I use to stay up late as a kid and my dad would let me watch the Late Show sometimes and I believe the first ever show I watched was one of the shows where Rupert had the spy gear on while Dave was telling him what to say to people from a parked car. Loved Rupert and the show ever since.
This was the best. Wonderful.
when Dave walked on that stage of The Tonight Show in 11/24/1978 he gave birth to all that joy
Exactly. The evolution is beyond incredible. Although it did also lead to our show, so clearly mutations evolved as well.
🎵I love me some Rupert Jee.🎵
Dave wears the cool shades now too 😊
I thought Rupert passed away, but best of luck on your future endeavors!
Rupert and May were my neighbors in NJ. They are the best people, my family and I loved them
I was a HUGE fan of Letterman and watched every episode I could catch (I'm Australian and it was sometimes hard to find back in the 80's and 90's) but from 2003 I watched EVERY show! and recorded it if I had to miss it anyway! Anyway when my sister went to New York her one job was to get me a Hello Deli shirt!
Now to search for Donz 'fun with Rupert' compilation.
No joke, just this past weekend I was looking up the Hello Deli to see if it was still open. I saw that it was closed earlier this year and Rupert was looking to sell the store. I was sad that I never made it out to see the deli but happy that Rupert is getting to enjoy retirement. Seeing this piece is perfect timing and I'm so happy to see the Letterman staff remember Rupert and the Hello Deli! Give the man a nice cold cut platter as a retirement gift.
Please do a staff favorite moments with Mujibur and Sirajul
They will be coming on The Letterman Podcast soon.
thanks for letting us be a part of this! congrats Rupert and May!
It was so sweet that they put this out for all to enjoy :)
Great to see Dave, Paul and Rupert, my old TV friends! Congratulations Rupert and May!
