The White Lotus is an entertaining and honest piece of art, yet many on the left seem to not only misunderstand the meaning of the show, but fundamentally misunderstand the purpose of art itself.

I loved The White Lotus! Spoiler alert, season 1 was my favourite and my favourite scenes were when the son had lost his cell phone and he gradually realizes what he’s been missing, he starts observing the world around him and it’s beauty. Eventually, he gets offered to canoe with some Hawaiian men. And then in one of the last scenes he’s in line to get on the airplane, and his parents are a little bit ahead, and he waves at them to keep going like he’s going to get on behind them, but he turns around and starts jogging away with the look of freedom on his face. The last scene is him in the outrigger canoe with the men, on the beautiful ocean with a beautiful sunset. It makes you really wonder what his future holds for him.

His family noticed he wasn't there and they got off the plane too. He's the minor son of rich, prominent people. The FBI and multiple law enforcement agencies are looking for him and they will find him. One of his new friends will likely turn him in if he isn't found first, especially since he told his parents exactly who he was hanging out with and what he planned to do.

the trend(s) of turning everything into everyones sexual perversions is starting to get repetitive at best... good story ideas should not necessarily come from the lowest common denominator.. anyone can do that.. good ideas are hard to come by and are rare... however the fall of the USA is topical, so I'll give them that... but your closing thoughts are so spot on.

honest question: this is a great rule of thumb for character-centered writing and character-building, dialogue, etc...is this also same for an overall theme? I'm still learning screenplay structure, and it's amazing the need for morale such as the overall tests of the character in order for the big end etc., so for me as a conservative with neutral writing ideas, that part gets a little trickier. or thus far still just starting haha.

I love your points. I always enjoy your feedback on media and art. One area I would push back on though is the idea of a woman not winning in a swordfight. The answer is more nuanced. If you had said a fist fight, I would agree as only a highly athletic and trained woman versus an unskilled and weakish man would be relatively fair. However, swords can reduce the disparity in many cases, especially in unarmored sword fighting. I think your general point is accurate.
Also I found out medieval trial combat had provisions for a husband and wife to settle by placing the man in a pit up to his armpits armed with a club and the wife would put a 3lb stone in her wedding veil and they would fight. If the man pulled the wife into the pit she was killed. If she pulled him out, he was hung.

Watched the first two episodes of Season 2 and couldn't get into it. I get that the characters are supposed to be unlikable, but they were just so dull, I couldn't stand watching them anymore. A lot of my favorite shows and movies have unlikeable protagonists (The Sopranos, The Shield, American Psycho, etc.), but those characters are infinitely more watchable than the ones on White Lotus. The characters in The Sopranos are scummy in funny and creative ways, with charismatic actors behind them to add life to their eccentricities. The performances in White Lotus all feel flat - purposely flat I'm sure, but flat nonetheless.
I do appreciate Klavan's insights here and it's nice to hear why others like the show. It does sound like an interesting idea in concept and maybe gets better after the episodes I watched.

I agree with 99% of what you're saying in this video, but the one thing I disagree with is that it's 100% impossible for a woman to win a sword fight against a man. Not true, mixed gender tournaments have had many woman defeat men. The key is a woman will be at a significant strength disadvantage vs a man, yes, but skill, luck, ingenuity and other factors can overcome that. A sword, at it's core, is a force multiplier which does level the playing field a fair bit. The woman does not need to smash the man's face in with brute force, just deliver a cut or thrust sufficient to disable or kill the man. The edge of a sword makes that very do-able, even in a disparity of strength.
So I would amend that to if a show shows a woman brute force overpowering a man, then turn it off, but if she's just more skilled or got lucky or used some cleaver trick to overcome a disadvantage, then that's good writing portraying how a woman could and would need to overcome the odds stacked against her.
I follow channels from The Community of the Sword (Shadiversity, Metatron, Skallagrim, etc) and have seen many videos from these experts addressing the issues of man v woman in sword fights.

I think you’re missing out on what the show is actually depicting. Their decadence is gratuitous, and that’s part of the point. I could list many examples like Akira, Berserk, and a lot of Clive barkers work where the bad things are used as devices to show the audience they are bad. For example with a series like berserk, the integration of horror and sexuality create the force of evil, and it gives a palpable and visceral reaction for the audience to see evil, that doesn’t mean it makes you evil somehow. Good people are fine with seeing evil and flaws in humanity, it’s the bad people that try to repress sins. That repression doesn’t lead to less sins it leads to more.
