  • Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace was one of the biggest cultural moments in cinema history. Not only did it arrive after 26 years of anticipation, but at the tail end of one of the most robust and downright impressive marketing campaigns ever conceived. In the 25 years since its release, the trailers and marketing for The Phantom Menace have only become more impressive. With a focus on selling the wonder and mystery of this new era of Star Wars, the trailers for The Phantom Menace provide a blueprint on how to effectively market a film.

The first trailers for Dead Reckoning and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes are the only ones in recent memory that I’ve really enjoyed, and it’s for exactly the reasons you described: heavy on vibes and light on actual plot details.
