I got you guys beat. I'm 69, fortunate to be gigging some and practicing every day.
I'm in a cover band now that wants to do "My Sharona". Of course, I heard it but never played it.
Just saw Sina play it. Wow, I want to be as good as her when I grow up. SHE NAILS IT!
Great sounding beat with the toms, and she doesn't overdo the accents. Terrific drumming.
And thanks Sina, you gave me a master lesson in how to play, "My Sharona"

Summer of ‘79 about to go into 8th grade. This song was a monster hit that summer. One of the best pop rock songs ever recorded. A few years later in college when this came on in the bars the kids would lose their minds. Fantastic cover as usual. I’m a sucker for that subdivision late in the song where he goes form 16ths to triplets. You nailed this song and loved some the extra ghost notes on some of the fills.

Some say I have a knack for writing these comments. Muh muh muh maybe, but one thing's for sure - today we all have The Knack...
THE SONG - "My Sharona" was written by Berton Averre (lead guitarist) and Doug Fieger (lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist). The guitar riff had been created years earlier by Averre and Fieger promised to include it in a song someday. Fieger claimed he wrote the lyrics in 15 minutes. When he was 25, Fieger was inspired to write after meeting 17 year-old Sharona Alperin. Although the age difference, and the teenage lustiness of the lyrics later became somewhat controversial, Sharona apparently resisted his advances and, when they eventually started dating, it was reportedly with her father's consent and she had also turned 18. Fieger would later say the lyrics were written from the perspective of a 14 year-old boy.
"My Sharona" was the biggest hit single of 1979. It was the debut single of their album 'Get The Knack' which was produced by Mike Chapman and recorded at MCA Whitney Recording Studios in Glendale, California. Chapman, who had produced Blondie and Suzi Quatro, said he told the band it would be a #1 hit the first time they played it for him. All of the songs were recorded within a two week period in April 1979 for under US$20,000. "My Sharona" was released in June 1979 and entered Billboard's Hot 100 chart at #86 on June 23. With massive radio play, it quickly shot to #1 on Aug 25th and held that spot for six weeks. It stayed within the top 20 until Oct 27 and was last charted at #97 on Nov 17, 1979.
The Knack were not a bunch of kids from a garage band who just happened to make it big, they were experienced musicians in their mid-to-late 20s who had been playing together for some time. All through 1978, they played club gigs at the Troubador and the Whisky. They built up a large L.A. fan base that included Tom Petty, Stephen Stills and Bruce Springsteen who would jam with them at the Troubador. Doug Fieger once said "Bruce Springsteen gets up onstage with us on a Friday night, and on Monday, we have 14 record offers."
Unfortunately, The Knack were a victim of their own success. "My Sharona" set the bar so high that there was little chance of a repeat and the pressure from the record company and the fear of seeing their popularity slip away led to substance abuse. They took a year off from mid-1980. When they returned, internal squabbles and chart failures led to Fieger's departure on Dec 31, 1981. By mid-1982, the band had split up.
Doug Fieger was diagnosed with brain tumors in 2006. Despite surgery and chemo, he battled brain and lung cancer and died on Feb 14, 2010 aged 57. Drummer Bruce Gary, whose iconic drum groove opens "My Sharona", died from lymphoma on August 22, 2006 at the age of 55.
THE DRUM COVER - Californian Bruce Gary was born in 1951. He learned to play drums as a kid using a drum set his cousin had grown bored with. He left home at 15 and was soon playing with Albert Collins. By the mid-70s, he was touring and recording with Jack Bruce, Mick Taylor and Dr John. Doug Fieger invited him to join The Knack in 1978. For "My Sharona", he developed a groove to complement Berton Averre's guitar riff. He described it as a surf stomp influenced by "Going to a Go Go" by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles with an added flam - a closely spaced double hit on the snare - to make it sound fuller.
According to 'Modern Drummer' magazine - "It’s important to note that the drum sound on 'Get the Knack' is markedly out of character with a lot of hit records that were being made in the late ’70s. Where the norm was to have a flat, fairly dead-sounding kit, 'Get the Knack' sees Gary and Chapman going in the opposite direction with lively, open-sounding toms, a popping snare, and a substantial amount of sound-expanding room ambience."
After The Knack split up Gary became an in-demand session drummer for artists like Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Stephen Stills, Rod Stewart, and many others.
"My Sharona" was a hit 20 years before Sina was born. Bruce Gary passed away when Sina was still a child. For today's cover it was Sina's job to breathe new life into an old hit and an iconic drum beat. Since she usually uses a drumless track for a drum cover, which would not have any of Gary's drumming to follow, we asked how she prepared. Sina told us that she searched for videos of Bruce Gary's drumming to study. With that inspiration she was ready to decide which parts to emulate and which she would play in her own style. Sina told us that her video research "helped a lot and I tried to duplicate what he did there as accurate as possible. But in the 2nd half of the song I started to improvise and add a bit more of my own playing to the song. That was possible because we indeed used a drumless track."
If you'd like to know more about Bruce Gary's drumming style, Sina recommends - ruclips.net/video/RBDh9-dEDfA/видео.html
Equally diligent in her searching, Ro discovered an elusive 24 minute documentary on the making of "My Sharona". Made before Bruce Gary and Doug Fieger passed away, all 4 band members plus producer Mike Chapman and Sharona Alperin discuss the song. It's in three parts -
    Part One - ruclips.net/video/RtqA82G6NlQ/видео.html
    Part Two - ruclips.net/video/lnU4GuSKGOw/видео.html
    Part Three - ruclips.net/video/RO17pcqtGk0/видео.html
PERSONAL NOTE - Once again, thanks to Sina and Mike for their cooperation and Ro for finding stuff that I never could.
Also, I won't have a comment next Friday. A family thing with the in-laws will take us about a 5 hour drive away from Comment Central. We'll be gone Friday to late Sunday. You guys are in good hands though. I'm sure Sina and Mike will give you all the info you really need. Cheers!

Being a musician myself I listen to a lot of cover bands, particularly a lot of drum covers. Most drummers that do covers are very, very good, but they miss one very important aspect. Their sound just isn't true to the original song, i.e., the snare drum is to "loose", the hi-hat is "tinny", or the bass drum is off. Your renditions, however, are spot on. Even before you changed mics you had a quality sound no other can match. Thanks for paying attention to detail and for another great cover of a great classic. -->Ric

    • @SpeccyMan
      @SpeccyMan 5 лет назад +5

It's worth remembering that interpretation is also important so being true to an original is all very well but the personality of the musician is of equal importance and should be allowed to shine through. Being a stickler for "true to" isn't necessarily a good thing if it hinders creativity.

On many videos I can actually see her facial expressions during her drumming. and they are super exhilarating ..... the videos where her hair is all over her face absolutely doesn't take away from her talent, but for me, when I can't see the thrill, the love, the excitement on a musician's face, it takes away from my experience of connection with her playing.

Sina, I was 16 when this song came out and you definitely took me back. You so totally rock! I mean, you sound EXACTLY like the record!!! It's really nice to see young people enjoying and playing the music of my generation. We truly had some great music back in those days. Thanks for making me feel young again. I've heard your many other drum covers as well. You're so damn talented I expect that pretty soon, you'll get snatched up in a recording contract somewhere and won't be playing RUclips anymore....and I wish you all the success in the world :) YOU DESERVE IT!!! Best Wishes.

How many noticed Sina's new look? New drum set, new jeans, new top, hair back, big smile....I am happy that she kept her trademark "red shoes" and necklace! Seriously though Sina, I look for a smile in every video you do and I was rewarded today a the 4:28 mark when you were concentrating so hard and you evidently played up to you own expectations. It was a little smile that said "whew got that this time" I think. Luv U (The Whoo)

@@sina-drums Ha - we ALL know the talent is there - we're now all just waiting for the special smile! It's all part of the deep enjoyment code.
It's evident you're paying as much attention to the sound and engineering of your videos as the incredible work that's going into the drumming itself. May God continue to bless you - you're spreading a lot of love around the world doing this, it's a major breath of sweet air on this troubled planet.

Great job on a very difficult song! I was a drummer in a rock band back in the 90's and we tried to get this song down, but I just couldn't do it. So many changes, off beats and quick rolls that were just beyond my ability. You make it look so easy!

Drumming is a complete workout isn't it? Before I started looking at these vids close I used to think it was mainly hands but the feet get quite a workout too I see. Probably one of the most physically strenuous instruments to play especially for a whole concert. So much respect for the drums now.
