I really love quote from Battlefield 1: "More than 60 million soldiers fought in 'The War to End All Wars'. It ended nothing, yet it changed the world forever."
Treaties in WWI were direct reasons of starting WWII. Great War effectively killed absolute monarch rule and was a beginning of end of European dominance on the world.

WW1 also brought us the rise of communism (Russian Revolution) and thus the future cold war, created the conditions for the rise of fascism & nazism, and resulted in the current mess we find the Middle East (betrayal of promises to the Arabs & British endorsement of Zionism/future rise of Israel contributed to rise of radical islamism).
It brought down autocratic monarchism but simultaneously spawned most of the tyrannical and absolutist ideologies that have defined the modern world.

In short: Russia left WW1 because it was in the interest of Russian Communists (Bolsheviks) who took power in November 1917 ( = Oktober revolution, they used different calendar) The Bolsheviks' priority was to win a civil war against their domestic opponents, not to fight in WW1.

Not to mention, the Bolsheviks came to power thanks to Germany in the first place. Germans sent Lenin back to Russia to start a revolution

    • @xenotypos
      @xenotypos 3 месяца назад +3

Even if it's not entirely wrong, it's misleading: The Russian revolution happened to begin with because Russia was ruined and starving. Russia had to give Germany a lot of valuable land with 1/4th of their industry (!) and 1/4th of their population. That's no small loss, that's complete defeat.

This was super fun to react to again with people/ community. Epic HistoryTV is always worth a rewatch with some peeps, if even random.
The Napoleonic series (all of them) from Epic are amazing, it's absolutely their best work and they are well aware of it. Hate him or love him, this dude has a truly unbelievable life. There's no syfi out there that quite compares to him.
His political/ military genius is one thing, being probably the luckiest human ever time and time again is truly hard to believe.
    Epic has them a bit separated, so it can be confusing at first glance but if it's any help to future videos;
    -Battle of Toulon (independent video)
    - Napoleon in Italy (5 part series)
    - Napoleon in Egypt (2 part)
    - Napoleons Coup (independent video)
    - The actual Napoleonic series playlist (from Emperor to Downfall + Waterloo)
    - The battle of Eylau (independent video on a battle that was skimmed over in the playlist and made after the series was done)
Lotta content to do, but it's incredible history to know. Learn alot more independent story telling in the Napoleon as well series.

my grandfather fought in WW1. Even though he was born in America, Chicago. German parents immigrant’s. so he was stationed in Arizona in the cavalry. He latered always how angry he was because he was an American. My grandfather was born in Chicago from a German family. but the fires in Chicago destroyed his birth records. So he helped the American troops in whatever way he could. My grandfather was amazing. I still miss him. I thought he was amazing. Later my father landed father German descent, landed on the beaches of Normandy. and survived.

You should do a review of the “Red Barron” fascinating story, from his history to his controversial death… There has been considerable discussion and debate regarding aspects of his career, especially the circumstances of his death. He remains one of the most widely known fighter pilots of all time, and has been the subject of many books, films, and other media. To this day he’s probably one, 21:23 if not the greatest Pilot Ace who ever lived.

I would argue that the United Nations has actually done a lot of good, sometimes they are involved in arms like we’re doing you with Ukraine, but they are fighting themselves and in the Middle East we’re trying to negotiate humanitarian relief as well as peace treaties, but you have to remember that when two parties are at war Nobody can actually force them to do anything they don’t want to.

    Constructive feedback:
You misunderstood the thing with Poland: They didn't stop to exist for the duration of WW1. They stopped to exist for a HUNDRED YEARS before re-emerging as a nation after WW1.
Further: You seem not to watch the terrible drone videos on a daily base from the Ukraine war, what I can perfectly well understand, because they are horrific. In short: No, there will be no second display of respect, like seen in the funeral of the Red Baron.

They suffered 5000 casualties in 5 minutes, but did they stop, NO! (Semper Fidelis my brothers.) They rolled up the Germany line in that sector which started the general collapse of the German army on the western front. The Devil Dogs will never be forgotten. As part of his release, he had to pull the nation out of the war. The Bolsheviks then had to battle what became known as the White Army to gain control of the former tsarist empire. By 1922, the USSR was formed with 12 republics, including Ukraine and Belarus.

Unfortunately this episode isn't accurate, the allied offensive on the western front started at the battle of Hamel with the Australian 1st army the US, British and Canadian troops under the command of Sir John Monash (Australia's greatest general) who invented modern warfare and ended trench wars. Oh and the surrender of the Ottoman Empire happened after the fall of Beersheba which withstood the attack of 60 thousand British troops, it wasn't until 800 troops of the Australian light horse charged the lines and claimed victory.

    1) The new communist government of Russia signed that treaty which was very favorable to Germany because they knew the Russia people desperately wanted peace, and they hoped that ending the war with Germany would make the communists more popular in the Russian Civil War that had just begun. Also, the communists assumed as a matter of faith that the "inevitable" global socialist revolution was just around the corner, at which point they believed national borders wouldn't matter much, or even exist.
    2) In 1918, the military-led German government hid that the situation was getting increasingly worse. The surrender came as a shock to civilians, even though they were nearly starving. In the years of suffering after the war, the civilian and military leaders who ended the war came to be known as the "November criminals" who had "stabbed in the back" the German people. This lie was a large part of Nazi propaganda, and you can guess which group of people they believed had conspired to persuade Germany's leaders to surrender.
    3) At 16:14, that rail carriage would be used again. When the French surrendered in 1940, they were made to sign the documents in the same carriage where Germany had surrendered in 1918.
    4) There was criticism of Allied generals for launching utterly pointless attacks on November 11, 1918, in the hours before the ceasefire they knew was coming. It's estimated that there were 11,000 casualties on both sides, including 2750 killed.
    5) The Paris Peace Conference did try to draw the new borders in central and eastern Europe as fairly as possible. Because of the intermixed ethnic population patterns, as well as historical claims by one country to territory of its neighbor, it was impossible to satisfy everyone. Naturally, the Allies tended to lean in favor of peoples who had supported the winning side. For the territory of the former Ottoman Empire, the boundaries were drawn with little or no concern for who lived where, thanks to the racial and colonial attitudes of the time. Perhaps it wouldn't have mattered if more of the nations of the Middle East were prosperous democracies, but they aren't. The civil wars in Iraq and Syria in this century have been fueled by the ethnic and religious hostilities among their people.
    6) The Treaty of Versailles was resented by Germany, but it's too simple to say it caused WW2. There were several years in the 1930s, when a growing Nazi Germany was still weak, that France and UK could have used more effective diplomacy or even military force to enforce the parts of the treaty that were being violated and possibly end the rule of Adolf, but they lacked the political will to do so. Winston Churchill said the two world wars and the peace in between were a "second Thirty Years' War" (the first was a religious one in 1618-1648). A second war might have been inevitable.

Russia was about to face civil war that would kill millions. Also many in Russia wanted an end to the war as quickly as possible. Remember that the army of Russia had stopped fighting long before the official treaty. (Basically Russia was collapsing and quality of life was rapidly deteriorating)

Answering your doubts as to why Russia withdrew from the war. Russia was coming through an internal crisis even before World War I, and its army was not capable of facing a war with the countries of Europe, this demonstrated in the War with Japan in 1905, in which the Japanese defeated the Russians. During World War I, Tzar Nicholas (the leader of Russia at the time) became very involved with the military and failed to attend to the needs of his people, causing the people of Russia, especially the peasants, to want Russia to leave the war and for Tzar Nicholas to resign his position. Lenin, who was exiled in Switzerland, was brought to Russia thanks to Germany taking advantage of the internal crisis so Lenin could realize his dream of communism, and this was useful to Germany because Lenin wanted to withdraw Russia from the war because he considered it "a capitalist war". Once Tzar Nicholas abdicated, a provisional republic was created in Russia but they wanted to continue the war, therefore, Lenin spread his desire to take Russia out of the war and this convinced the peasants, workers and also the Russian army. Lenin took control of Russia and signed the armistice with the countries of the central alliance, they gave up their territories and Poland, Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania emerged as independent countries. As World War I continued the "White Army", a counterrevolutionary group, was formed, the western countries joined this group because they wanted to put an end to communism. France, Great Britain, Japan, China, Italy, Czechoslovakia, Serbia, Romania,Greece and the United States went to support the White Army but the Soviets were victorious in the Russian Civil War (1917-1923).

I've watched all 6 parts of your reaction and you guys are absolutely clueless about this major historical event that is WW1, to me it's shameful, you're Canadian and don't even know the history of your own country, you seem to also praise the supposed almightly American superpower, while at this time this country wasn't a major player at all, and became one thanks to the huge profits it made during this war, selling supplies to the western allies while staying neutral until the last months of the war.
But I don't blame you, I rather blame your education system, American cultural propaganda, and Canada's inability to do the work of remembrance so that its children who fell on the field of honour, and the reasons why they fell, are not forgotten.

About Russia lefting the war: The country was torned apart after the revolution with many factions struggling for power, so the communist were forced to concede land for peace in order to focus on solidifying their power and reconquer the territories later (wich they mostly did, some after the war, others later in 1939)

World War I was known as the "War to end all wars." The term, originally from the 1914 book The War That Will End War by H. G. Wells), is now mainly used sardonically, since not only was World War I not history's final war, but its aftermath also indirectly contributed to the outbreak of the even more devastating World War II.

The League of Nations never succeeded in serving as a check on empire-building or in enforcing international law and norms. It was never truly representative of the nations of the world, and countries largely ignored it. That began with the United States, which did not ratify the Treaty of Versailles and did not join League, even though the U.S. president had been the one to propose it. The U.S. Senate was dominated by isolationists, who saw the treaty and the League as an opportunity to hamstring Wilson politically as being too out of touch with U.S. affairs. btw/The United Nations is fatally flawed because of the composition of the Security Council. The permanent members (U.S., UK, China, France and Russia) are constantly at odds over world affairs, and they possess a veto to block all action on global security matters. It is not the UN versus everyone, it's the fatal division within the UN that renders it inert.

The deaths were much larger because of the pandemic, which probably helped spread it because of the war. You should do a video about the 1917-1918 pandemic, which is called the "Spanish Flu", because the first press release about it happened in Spain, but it's unknown where it started and is debated to this day, as there was an outbreak in a US army barracks around the same time period. It's just another interesting historical event from that time period and is even more interesting as it started almost concurrently with the end of the war.
