If you want super fine screen protection, wrap your plastic gutter guard in a pantyhose knee-high for women. You can buy a pair of knee-high black hose or white or tan at any Dollar tree for $1. The pantyhose would make a perfect super fine wrap for your gutter guard. Nothing's getting through that no matter how small it is
This is a genius ideas. Definitely beats spending 100-160 on the metal ones that I’ve been looking at. Can’t wait to make some for my ford transit van.
Great idea. I will be sleeping in my Minivan in a couple weeks on a mountain bike trip and these will be great. Found some in had bought for 10 cents each on clearance.
Best Light Images Photography Awesome! They’ve worked great. I don’t sleep in the truck much since getting the roof top tent, but these were game changing while I was using them. Still keep them in the truck, never know when I’ll need em again!
Happy to help!! Haha I was kinda in the same boat until I saw this idea in the forums. I found it so helpful I had to share! Thanks for watching. What do you drive? Any big trips planned?
@@TrailBendersOverland yeah, I just finished building a platform for my girlfriend's Matrix. We are planning on using it a bunch this summer. I just uploaded a video about it: ruclips.net/video/uwF0YWUIXOw/видео.html
I've seen on Amazon but could probably rig up your own, but basically a mesh 'sock' that goes over the frame of the door and window with elastic edges and i think velcro for inner side to keep in place ... Allows you to roll windows up or down still without extra fiddling ones the mesh is on (since it wraps the windows half of the door with both an inner and outer layer, I imagine it should keep bugs out well. Because the mesh and elastic are both thin and soft, shouldn't interfere with door seals (maybe if left longterm but I don't know why'd anyone leave them on for routine driving).
Really cool idea! Man, wish I'd thought of this a long time ago. Great video, definitely gonna get some gutter guards and make these. Thanks for the video!
GREAT idea. Stealth looking too. I have a CRV but this will work with extra tape. I may put two of them stacked to get even more ventilation. I also am gonna see if I can make them work for my sunroof too!
Great tip man…! Pretty sure you don’t need to worry about rain, as I’m guessing 85% would deflect off the screen and it’s a pretty small area. A plus tip though, so easy…
Nice! Cheap and clean. Should also work vertically on sliding windows of my first-gen MoreFunner. I plan to use same gutter guard to keep leaves from getting through the cowl grille.
I just did this for my 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan and it was really easy. I just had to cut off about 1/4 inch and they fit perfect. Bought a can of spray paint. I might add a USB powered pc fan for a air intake and exhaust effect.
Never thought of that! I haven't been around no-see-ums so I wouldn't know. I'm going to have to extra no-see-um screen after sewing my roof tent this weekend. I'll be sure to cut some for the window screen
Actually, I saw these at Lowes today. I didn't realize when I watched the video but they already have a screen covering on the back that we didn't see in this video. You may want to add that to the description as someone commented above that they would only keep out roaches. But when you see them in person and see the screen on the back you realize they will work for smaller bugs also.
Oh! Didn't know they sold them in the store. And that's a good suggestion, I'll add that to the description. I posted photos of the screen a couple places and got the same response, wish I talked about/showed a better view of the screen on it. It's true no-see-ums would get through, but it's good for all other bugs. Thanks for the suggestion!
I bought some tent type fabric bug screen and cut a piece larger than the window, then sewed Craft store magnets along the 4 edges (or use a hot glue gun to attach them) and you can magnetically attach the screen over the entire window. Make sure magnets are strong enough so wind can't peel it off.
That's a great idea. I personally wanted to avoid putting anything on the body, to protect paint from getting dirt between the magnet and sheet metal. Still a good idea though!
@@TrailBendersOverland They could go on the inside instead of the outside and could allow the window to move up and down and still have the screen accessible.
Cool idea but my windows are not square sides. Bugsoc allows you roll up or down the window as much as you need. They're single wall design for max air movement, and someone can't just walk up at snatch them off like they can with the magnet ones. You'd have to destroy bugsoc to get them off without opening the door.
Oh man. I've seen those before but never looked up the price till just now. The idea behind this screen is to keep cost down by making it yourself, and compared to the Bugsoc it'd be keeping the price way down. Though the Bugsoc is great and works for any vehicle, I just couldn't justify the price. Though if you have long windows that aren't square, this wouldn't be the best idea for you.
Mark Spinner Awesome!! I can only take credit for trying it and also for making the video. I got the idea from the t4r.org forum. They still work great!
nice rig :D was looking for a solution and found your video - realized you also had 06 4thgen.. nice 😄 It was truly the perfect video for me, thanks for sharing! Question for you though. Did you make a piece for our rear hatch window that also rolls down? I figured rolling that rear window is game changer when it comes to ventilation. Just wanted to see if it could be done using the gutter guards too. Thanks again man 🙂
Have you slept in the vehicle yet with these to see how much air flow the fine mesh screen allows to come in? Some of the screening material out there is so tight that it doesn't actually give very much air flow. I'm about to buy these and experiment, found in brown at Lowes, and going to tape a double height, so instead of 6" will make 12" screen opening for more air option. Thanks
Thanks! We’re always think of new stuff to build and film. Mostly lately it’s been maintenance and travel vids. We do diy builds as we needed. Getting closer and closer to having a complete dream rig!
Haha I’ll make sure Steven sees this comment. I’m pretty sure he was working on a drawer system video. Thanks for the feedback! We’re always open to video suggestions
Thank you! I just did this for my car camping project. Now I need to figure out a window cover for stealth camping. I guess it's tough to have both the airflow with the screen and block out all visibility. Do you have any idea how to make this happen? My two ideas were cardboard covers that press into the window but don't go up all the way. Idea #2 is to have a curtain on the inside but I'm unsure if this will prevent airflow. Thanks!
I'm using this method but imbedding the gutter guard in a corriplast/reflectix window cover. Basically cut a rectangular hole in the window cover for the gutter guard and paint it black.
I love the idea..actually went and got the gutter shields but am curious...does the paint obstruct any of the airflow through the fine mesh? I would like to paint mine black but I want airflow as well.
TRACEY CASTALANO as long as our use a spray paint, it’s pretty easy to get a thin enough coat on that barely changes the size of the holes through the mesh.
Of course! As long as it's a regular screen, like for house windows.. you'll be perfectly fine with painting it. If it's an ultra fine mesh, like no-see-um screen, then make sure you spray suuuuuuper light
Anyone know if this would work for sleeping on the beach? Is the screen fine enough to keep out most sand or we just talking mid to large size bugs here?
Trail Benders Overland ....my bad!....I thought you meant on RUclips...which would mean more if you know what I mean.....but thank you!! I love your set up!!!
Oh haha! Yeah I was thinking why is that too important? Lol Yes that would've more way more relevant if it was a youtube video I got it from. Appreciate you looking out though! And thanks, it's been a great project. I'm still new to overland and off road, it's my first build!
+teakertown I do have an inverter, but will be replacing it at some point. It was $30 on amazon, but my understanding now is that the cheap ones waist a lot of power in ac/dc conversion, which isn't a huge deal for charging a phone, depends on what you're hooking up to it. When you start adding a fridge and a lot of other peripherals it's more important to understand how much power you have available and how quickly it will drain
Don't bother trying this on a curved window + curved frame. It will not work well, the material does not curve much and you cannot accurately match both curves due to this.
