    For the sort of winter riding I do, my single speed cromolly fully rigid 26" wheel MTB works a treat. Not as fast as my summer MTBs, but a heck of a lot of fun.

    • @The2808erik
      @The2808erik 2 года назад +8

      Yep, same. I have a 26' specialized 90s MTB converted to single speed. Less is more in winter I don't want to worry about gears or suspension.

    • @garethhughes5745

      Probably found a good point here 26ers will clear mud faster than 29ers. Much more suitable for UK mud. I still have my winter bike Specialised Rockhopper comp 2000

      Yeah, that doesn’t sound fun at all, due to geometry 😂

    • @snoopy10411

      Yep fully rigid, single speed and no dropper is the way to go for easy maintainance. Makes you work harder too so a short blast feels like you've had a good ride.

    My winter MTB is a 26” XC hardtail from ca. 2004, which I bought for only like 20 pounds and soon after equipped it with Shimano XTR 3x9 drivetrain with dual-control shifters/brake levers, which cost me only like 80 pounds from my good friend (whole groupset except for crankset). In the ‘winter MTB’ setup I use some more aggressive XC tires and a Marzzochi Bomber fork that came originally on the bike (can’t believe how smooth it still runs, I doubt there was any service done to it). For the rest of the year I swap out the fork for a ridgid one, install full mudguards and switch to fast rolling tires and it completely transforms its personality to what I consider the ultimate city commuter.
    I really like your setup though! Not a huge fan of the camo, but seems really like a dream bike for these months.

    Rich, great build! I'd like to see a video about the fork kit you installed. I ride a hardtail and a full sus but the hardtail is the bike I turn to most often.

  • @HeintjeMTB

    You don't need a chain guide on a hardtail. The length of the top side of the chain does not change due to suspension. So it stays on very well.
    I've never dropped the chain on my hardtail so far.
    About a bash guard, that's up to you I guess, If the only thing you might hit are wet roots, you can do without I guess.

    • @leodufour2
      @leodufour2 2 года назад

      really? on my hardtail my chain comes off when in not even on the trails yet, just on the road, but that could be my very worn chainring and chain which have been on for a year, ordered some new ones that hopefully will fix my issue

    • @HeintjeMTB
      @HeintjeMTB 2 года назад +1

      @@leodufour2 Of course, in my statement I assume you do have a narrow wide chainring and a clutch derailleur.
      With that I've never dropped a chain, not even on the roughest trails.

    I'm so jealous that your version of a winter bike is just a bit simplified ride. Over here in the North East of the USA it's almost all fat bikes. At the very least wide studded tires, but then you can't go out until the fatties have packed the trails down.

    Cool bike but some interesting choices considering its to be used for messy conditions in winter. Why an xtr cassette? Carbon bar (one up) is nicer since it doesn’t hold the cold like an alum bar does. Also, SLX? Might as well save a few bucks and just do deore throughout but with XT shifter. Again, nice bike but I’d be saving some money on some of these items that will see some nasty conditions.
