A couponing friend of mine told me that the difference between a hoard and a stockpile/food storage is dust. 😁 If your cans & boxes are covered in dust, you have a hoard because you’re not rotating the food and using it. The only exception is if you have long term food storage (stuff that lasts for 10+ years). If your food storage is a working/rotating deal, you’re good. 👍🏼

How do you get food products to last 10+ years?

Jenifer Rogers Long term food storage items are usually sealed in #10 cans. Thrivelife.com is a company that specializes in this, but there are a lot of other companies that have similar items. Augason Farms and Mountain House are 2 that come to mind.👍🏼

Love this. And even as the kids get older and move, they will come in and “shop” your stock piles. There isn’t a whole lot of potential for waste, more so if you watch the expiration dates and donate close to time and/or can and dehydrate any fresh or frozen items. Everyone complains about the woman who carries the huge purse until they need something out of it! Kudos on the preparedness.

Lol. When I moved out over a decade ago my mom bought me a lot of groceries and home items like broom, cleaning supplies, garbage can... well stocked kitchen was the best gift she could have given me since she bought me things I never would have never guessed at 22 I needed, like a colander or a potato peeler.

I am well prepared and well stocked but always hav3 been it’s not because of Covid. I have two 700L Chest Freezers, nicknamed the coffins, plus the freezer section below my fridge. My pantry is full and one side, five shelves, in my linen closet. I do use and rotate all the time plus I’m quite often the supermarket for my grown kids and wouldn’t have things any other way.mi bake bread, kids tell me when their coming over and I bake bread for them too, I have large storage air tight bins with bread flour, rice, sugar, rolled oats and milk, powder in. It works for us and we never have waste and I’m constantly buy vacuum sealer rolls for my FoodSaver.

We have a deep freeze and a decent sized pantry. I bought a plastic rack from home depot when I was pregnant with my first child and stocked it with baby food and other essentials. It's now holding crayons, kitchen appliances, etc. You have really inspired and helped me shop and cook smarter.2 weeks ago, I bought freezer friendly Tupperware and started making double and triple batches of stuff. Making lunch size portions for me and my girls to freeze. They are on fall break this week, which I didn't think about.. but it's a total blessing. We will have yummy and quick lunch options available.

Love this. We downsized recently and moved to a warmer climate, which has been great in many ways, but we lost soooo much storage in the process. We used to have a pantry very similar to yours. I didn't realize how much I relied on my oversized garage, large pantry, and basement. Lots of nice weather and neighborhood amenities, but no basements in Florida. Now we have our extra food shoved into bags in my bedroom closet because our pantry is literally only about 15 inches wide, haha.

I'm into Scientific Processes and Organization, can be boiled down to Henry Ford's Method of Assembly Line.
    1) I would put all your small appliances in the upstairs pantry closet with the light weighted least used on the top shelf. Bring them all upstairs to the kitchen work area. No one want to be running up and down for making an occasional bowl of Ice Cream.
    2) Put heavy small appliances on the floor with the least used to the corner on the right. No use opening both doors each time you go into the closet pantry. Keep the most used on the left near the mop/broom.
    3) I had my electrician put a wall plug about 4 1/2 feet off the floor then put one of those long narrow Mail basket with key hooks above the plugs for a Charging Station near the backdoor in the kitchen. Plug the phones in and drop them in the basket. Ends the eyes glued to the phones in the house.
    4) I hate dangling cords, so picked up Velco Cord ties from the Office Supply store to keep the cords coiled up and neat.
    5) Office Supply stores are a wealth of canvas totes, filing containers & boxes, etc. for storing loose items like drink mixes, gravy/sauces, small snack and bars, etc.
    6) Put the Tupperware to use before you have bugs getting into your "stuff".
You can order Diatomaceous Earth online. Just sprinkle a small amount in the bottom of clear plastic tubs or sealable pails/buckets to store boxed goods in with herb packets to discourage bugs & oxygen desiccant packs for long term storage.
    7) I keep reusable shopping bags on a hook in my basement pantry for shopping trip. Makes it easier to do a weekend's worth on menus in one trip. Saving me time, steps and energy for family and myself.
To maximize the space, T shelves out from the wall into the room two deep between each current shelf. You could increase your shelf space easily to 15-16 of the silver heavy duty shelves.
The lightweight shelf could be moved away from the furnace and used strictly for paper goods.
You're doing great with the oldest first out system and having good shelves.
Told you I was obsessive of wasted space, steps and. energy, it's all Henry Ford's fault. Lol

Its not too much ifou are using and eating the items. My ultimate goal is to have a 3 to 6 month working pantry and 1 year long term storge. I had back problems and surgery several years ago and our pantry reduced the costs and stress during that hard time.. Not to be judgey, just sharing my exlerience, I find when I mix different types of things on the shelves it makes it look cluttery and out of control, I think if you would organize like things together it wouldnt feel too much, this tip helped my pantry to work better and be much easier to see what we had and what was needed. You are doing great for your family thanks for sharing

Nope it’s not too much. We just moved to my husbands Grandparents farm house. It has a big pantry room. A smaller pantry, and a cellar. We are planning on having a full working pantry that can last us up to a year at any given time. Plus store some longer term foods that can last for years. We raise all of our own meat. Plus a decent sized garden that we can our own produce from.

I love seeing other people’s pantries! I use the dead space that is over the stairs to the basement as my pantry, my husband put shelves and a light that automatically goes on when I open the door. It’s got weird angles but works well. It’s not in the kitchen but close. I also have our old fridge and a chest freezer plus more shelves for storage in our unfinished basement. My biggest problem is mice, yes we have a cat, sealed the foundation and set up traps everywhere 🐭😻😩. To be frugal, I shop once a month but I also keep my eye open to grocery loss leader sales and stock up when able. It’s just my husband and I, but we’re cutting back on eating out and I have our kids and their families over so I cook quite a bit and enjoy it.

Not exactly the same problem - my HVAC and water heater are on the same side of the room, but the way they did the pipes, electrical, and sump pump means the room can’t be finished. I wouldn’t care except that’s where our washer/dryer are and I hate doing laundry in the dungeon. Today I cooked some rolled oats and put some organic coconut cream in & some grass-fed butter and crushed fresh blueberries in it only to find out that it smelled rancid after it was cooked. If you were going to finish the basement you could move either the water heaters or the furnace to the other side. My brother-in-law moved his furnace himself because it was right in the middle of the room (talk about dumb placement), and he's not a tradesman or anything. The hard part would probably be moving the drain. I agree it should have been planned that way in the first place, but I think most people have a lot more junk that they need a big storage room for! I'm guessing you store holiday decorations elsewhere...

I also have a large storage area where I stock up on so many things. My husband gets overtime in the summer and so I take advantage of the extra money and stock up. WOW thats alot of stuff.Maybe if you organised it like items together, for example all appliances on one shelf, all pasta together etc. That way it would look and function better. Also you would see at a glance what you need to buy for certain recipes.Just a thought,I am a bit OCD when it comes to organisation. We only have a small 2 door pantry, and it really holds very little.Consequently we use a spare wardrobe in the guest bedroom for overflow grocerys and soda and toilet paper.

At certain times of the year I would stock up for about a year. Fall was pasta, sauce and canned veggies. Late fall/winter baking goods. Spring eggs & dairy. I kept a price book of the 3 local grocery store costs and would make notes on rock bottom prices. One year all the pasta (except lasagna) was free. There was a blinkie machine that gave out coupons that made the pasta free at food lion. We ate around sales. I had recipes covering most possibilities. Egg at .65-.75 a dozen meant quiche, egg based casseroles, upside down breakfast. Kellogg’s had a promotion that paid me to buy Raisin Bran cereal. The food bank got over hundred boxes, lol. Since it can be tedious I turned it into a game, a competition, me against the store. And eventually me outdoing my best.

Mary Lober , my apologies, an upside down breakfast just means breakfast food for dinner. So, scrambled eggs, bacon and toast for dinner as an example. Or pancakes/syrup, eggs or eggs with potatoes/onions from the oven, quiche. Meats are optional if you haven’t got them at a rock bottom price.

I do have some stupid layout stuff in my house. My kitchen floorspace is huge, but it's not designed efficiently so we basically have a whole lot of floor, no counter space, and very little cupboard space. The pantry is in the basement under the stairs, which is a good use of the space under the stairs but kind of silly considering the size of the kitchen. Our laundry room is also huge and connected to one large den/living room when the space could have easily been a small laundry room, den, and a bedroom if it weren't such a weird layout.

You could make better use of the mechanical room by putting more shelving back to back so you can store more preps. All you need is enough room to walk between the shelving; it looks like you could probably get at least another 6+ units in there. Also, you might want to get some drywall up on that ceiling AND put your dry goods into plastic bins, to protect your food from insects and rodents. All commercial food has insect eggs and they will hatch at some point and start eating the food they are in; they can decimate a bag of rice or wheat pretty fast. I recommend you dry can or vacuum seal your rice, beans, pasta, cereals, cookies, protein bars, etc. in glass mason jars. I haven't seen your videos before so please forgive my comments if you are fairly new to prepping...but you really don't have enough food there to sustain your family in a SHTF scenario (other than meat, but if the grid goes down, you won't have that very long). You want to have enough for everyone for at least 1-2 years; more if possible...and lots of water as well.

You may want to start canning some of the beef so that it does not get freezer burn. I just canned some of my beef in pints and they came out so yummy, though I did pre-season with onion flakes, bouillon, garlic and ginger.

We stockpile all the time. Love saving money on everyday items. We recently just did a huge overhaul of our stockpile storage area and looking for new ways to reorganize. Great video! New subscriber here!

Enjoyed the video. We have a stall in the barn that used to be the tack room where I stockpile food, home canned stuff, etc. I also have a shelf that has wheels in one of the spare bedrooms along with the closet that I store those things I use more often, appliances etc. I need to organize all of it though. I have a hard time finding things and end up going to store to get what I think I am missing and then find it later when looking for something else, ugh!

We used to stockpile, but now that we're in an apartment there's just no room for it. I do my best, but once you get to two weeks of groceries there's almost no space left (and only 1 freezer is super limiting).
On badly designed spaces, when I was a teenager we moved into a house that had a hallway that split in a Y shape. This meant we had a linen closet that was triangular and half of the double vanity in the bathroom was unusable because the wall cut at an angle in front of it.

I wish I had such a big pantry and so much storage space! My mom is a genius at saving money and storing stuff just like you... but I moved away recently and I have to limit myself to my kitchen cabinets and a 27 gallon freezer for long term storing. :(

I am just watching this video now. I guess it nearly empty after all :) May be you can show it again , kind of "during coronavirus " . By the way if you keep all appliance on one side or on one shelf it will look better. Or you can give them to someone who will use them everyday :) Small similar products can be kept in box . And it same boxes it will look more organised . For baking in one place , ....

I do the same. If it's a extreme deal I dont worry how much I get. I try to keep aware of dates and send things to the food pantry as needed. I think I've had at least 200 boxes of cereal at one point. Excessive? Gotta live my life with 12 daycare children at times.

My pantry is similar to yours I have a family of four and I shot the sales and I restock the pantry and use what I have. I only do grocery shopping once every 2 to 3 weeks. it used to be two weeks on clockwork but lately I've been trying to push it an extra week just to use up some stuff that we have

YES! There's more than one dumb thing here (mostly all in the DIY basement the people made and then sat the house on top of it!), but one that drives me crazy is that they built the small food storage room around the huge chest freezer, and the door is narrow like a closet doorway. So if/when the chest freezer dies, too bad - it will be stuck in that room forever because it's too wide to get out of the doorway! 🤣

My 1st time watching you. I dont think you are crazy at all. I like to can/ freeze when i have the time.
One thing I noticed was your vanilla!! So easy to make!! Cost some money to make. Vanilla beans are expensive now but so worth it and not all the junk in it. Just 2 ingredients vanilla beans and vodka. I bought my beans from Amazon they were Madagascar beans. And buy cheap vodka, it has to be 80 proof. You have canning jars fill them with the beans then fill with vodka. Let it sit for atleast 3 months, longer if you can. Shake once a week! It never expires and taste great and you know what is in it. If you have a brown jar or bottle use that and keep it in a dark place. Thats it enjoy!!

Hi l am a newbie and I have just watched you organise your pantry because you said that a subscriber told you how to do it.
I must say that I love the way the organised one looks.
Since you did ask for suggestions in the future video about places to organise l would say that the OCD me is wondering why you have boxes of clothes everywhere? How do you know where to find what you need in a hurry?
I wou suggest arranging stuff on the shelves according to type, like shelf one and two food and within that all the same type of food together like you did with your cereal. Like grains, cans, pasta, etc.
Shelf 3,would be appliances and camping stuff , and other technology and technical stuff and finally shelf 4 clothes and gifts and bedding.
    BTW l love your chanel

Very nice we don't have the room to stock pile like that 762 sq foot house but I do have a small built in pantry in my basement which is stocked to the gill with "canned goods" and I keep going lol! I do have a large shelf of commercially canned foods in a different area of my basement. Cereal we aren't big on have a few boxes but.. here is important one I store all my cereals and grains in glass jars due to the occassional mouse that gets in the house we even had a raccoon get in a broken window pane in the basement.. thank goodness I found the little guy right away before he did any damage. We won't go in to how we got him out but he was not harmed just scared and ran back out the window he came in.. that window has since been replaced with a glass block window. Love seeing your storage areas I too have a lot of kitchen toys and way too many clothes which we are purging now as we change seasons. Anna In Ohio.

I recently “discovered” your channel. I love seeing what other people do to buy, organize, cook, etc. I don’t think you buy or have too much. A busy life requires that you make the most of the time you have. Cutting down on going to the grocery store not only saves time, but money.
I’m just wondering why you don’t keep all like items together? I even alphabetize things so that I know exactly where something is in my pantries. My herbs & spices are alphabetical. I hate having to waste time looking for something & by keeping it alphabetical, I know right where to look.

We have a nice sized pantry but not big enough for a stockpile. We do have a garage with a fridge and freezer but they dont have a ton of room left. But that being said, I could make dinners out of what we have and not have to spend much during the week, except that my husband and toddler drink at least a gallon each of milk per week, sometimes more 🙈

Love the video. I guessed about 50 boxes of cereal. :) I have a storage room which is a spare bedroom I use for my stockpile room. We have 3 freezers, so we could go about 4 or 5 months with shopping, except for milk, eggs, butter few fresh items. Even stocked on toilet paper and paper towels that will last a few months too. Laundry detergent and dish soap and dryer sheets we could go for months too. Shampoos and soaps and things like that too. I use to be big into couponing, so I stocked up before my husband and I retired, that way we have plenty as we have a fixed income now. :) Thanks so much for sharing.
