Bought my Miata new in 1991, limited slip differential, 5 speed, no power steering, hand crank windows, still a total blast to drive 31 years and 58,000 miles later… Everyone asks, isn’t that the car you had back when you were in your mid 30’s? Yep, going on 67, still get a kick out of cruising in it… Best part, I drive it sparingly, only on nice days, the car is in winter storage every year, all original paint, still looks and runs like new…

Hello Scotty, You are 100% correct Miatas are "pure fun". Until recently I had a 1990 Year-One red Miata all original. Since I moved, I no longer had a garage and I hated to see it just sitting there waiting for summer in bad weather so I decided to sell it, but only to someone I knew, with a garage and that would take care of it. So, I decided to do a little research to help me sell it. That's when I discovered I had a very rare year-one Miata with the original Steel Rims. Also, it was the 2,260th ever made from car one...! The first three are at the Mazda Museum in Hiroshima, and of the first 5,000 ever made only a handful are still on the road the rest are all gone due to accidents, raced to death and modifications. I was the second owner, the original owner bought it new in Canada, where Mazda sent the first batch of Miatas sold to north America, thus the low 1989 assembly number. The new owner is a car nut and owns wine vinyards in Eastern Washington. I'm a bicycle mechanic and work on his nice bikes. When he caught wind i was selling it asking $6K, he said I'll give you $7K just to make sure you don't sell it while I go to the bank and get you cash! He has nice cars, including a new 2022 Corvette he bought for his wife. But his number one love is his Red Miata. He had it all detailed and replaced a few things with only original parts. He took it to a car show and sent me pictures as it proudly sat between a Green Lambo and a Red Ferrari. I also have first bids if he ever sells it.

Rust is the killer in the UK for the Miata (called the MX5 here). Rear arches and sills are usually rotted out at 12-15 year old, repairable but a big job. The underside, even in the later ones (7-8 year old) can get very rusty and scabby. Great review, Scotty. Agreed with just about everything you said. I do have one concern about that specific car that you should tell your customer about. I've been working on these things for years, so I know from experience that the factory radiator's plastic housing should be black. When they start to turn brown or olive green, like the car you're reviewing, it often means that the chemicals in the plastic are starting to break down. It's only a matter of time before a crack develops. Just from visually inspecting what you showed on camera, everything else looks good...but that radiator would be the first thing I replace so I'm not left stranded on the side of the road. Cheers!

On my 2013, I put in a 2.5 Ford Focus motor with a turbocharger, and got 335 rear wheel horsepower with the stock camshafts! Upgrading camshafts, you could get about 450 rear wheel horsepower! It was a BLAST! Of course, I also upgraded the wheels and tires to put that kind of power to the ground, after all, it only weighed about 2400 lbs.

I had a 97 Miata and I am sorry I ever sold it. They are like you said a blast to drive. I could reach for the top and raise it with one arm. Now never try that when driving because the air catches it but just pull up to a light and reach back pull the top up and latch it. They run forever and are cheap to maintain and fix and you can go around freeway flyovers that are 45 at 80 and feel like you are glued to the road. I will admit it is like riding on a skate board when you first get one but they are great cars and a ton of fun.

A cool thing to do is wire in an air horn instead of the "meep meep" stock horn. You have to wire up a relay that draws power from the headlight motor circuit (or anywhere) because the horn circuit can't drive the airhorn. The much much louder horn comes in really handy on highways when very large trucks lose track of their lanes.

LOL yup I owned a '97 M Edition for over 13 years and and this is why I paid to have mine changed, twice, when I owned it! I thought about it briefly the second time around when it also needed a water pump, but after reading the instructions in the service manual ultimately said NOPE! Figured I could do it, but figured I didn't have room in the garage and didn't want it sitting outside partly disassembled over at least one weekend and knowing me probably two! :D One thing Scotty didn't mention, as I understand it the NA's at least were "non-interference" engines, if the belt breaks of course the engine won't run and you aren't going anywhere but good news is it shouldn't damage the engine, no contact between valves and pistons. However, 1990's and early '91's had a smaller crankshaft front "nose" with smaller diameter and different pulley to match it and if the instructions weren't followed to a "T" including replacing the key, torquing the crank pulley bolt and using loctite, you ran the risk of it loosening and wobbling and ultimately snapping off the front of the crankshaft which meant replacing either the crankshaft or the whole engine! $$$$!!! YIKES. Also as another person mentioned, the one in his video should have the radiator replaced soon--the plastic top starts out black, then fades to green and then brown and when it gets to a brown color it is gonna be leaking and cracking soon! I did do the radiator and upper radiator hose myself, that really is an easy job, only took me help of one friend and about 4 hours (including cleanup which was considerable LOL) and 1 or 2 trips to the parts store!

Average price for a used one in Florida is around 10k. Not $4500

AYYUUUUP that's about how it is down here, isn't it? I miss mine, want another and figure I'm gonna have to buy one out of state to get one in decent condition for reasonable money! Should've known something was up when the local Mazda dealer offered me $2200 in trade for my admittedly beat to hell 145k miles '97 M Edition with tired paint especially on the hood which looked about like it had been buffed with sand, and in some real need of mechanical attention--I'd figured they'd offer me a few hundred and I'd have turned 'em down and keep it as a play toy, but couldn't resist what they offered, so it made me sick when a few weeks later I saw my same '97 it at a "buy here pay here" car lot for $7900!
