    I've got to hand it to you. About the most abrasive thing you said was, oh crap! I've been trying for weeks to recoil the spring on a John deer model which only has a slim metal coil to hold the spring in place after being wound. There's been a blue cloud of profanities over my house for weeks. I'm ready to chuck it all in the dumpster. My hands will never play the violin again. may the saints preserve us. Tnx for the video.

    Tried a couple of methods (nails, screws, tie wraps, electric drills, etc.) trying to get the spring rewound on my chainsaw. Then stumbled onto your video. Duh! Easy, simple, fast. Only thing I did different was put on some gloves .... in case it exploded again. 😁 Thanks for the help!!!

    After a day and a half of winding and rewinding the recoil spring, I tried a little modification of the installation after the spring was wound in the little metal dish. After many cuts on my thumbs, blisters on my fingers from getting them caught between (I'll call it a recoil pulley), and a screw post and having to exhaust the place of all the blue air from all the cursing, I had to try something else. Instead of winding the spring tight with the recoil pulley I put the spring and metal dish in place with the hook in it's place, put the recoil pulley on, watching that the opening aligned with the proper place on the spring, slipped the pull rope in one of the little rounded notches in the upper part of the recoil pulley and turned it until it loaded the spring. Then I put the screws and tabs on that hold the pulley in place and tried pulling the rope. Works like a dream. Mine is a 2006 model FeatherLite XT260. Start to finish on this last try took less than 15 minutes. I got to be an expert at winding the spring into the metal dish. LOL
    Take care and thank you for this awesome video. Taught me another lesson on looking outside the box....or in this case, the weed eater housing.

    You're the best. I couldn't get it to become tense enough to recoil.... but I see what you did: you just kept spinning it until it was tighter. I wasn't doing that. thanks

    You are a true backyard professional sir, one that knows how to cuss and call things a peice of shit with every move and breath you make. Not like the guys in the lawnmower shops that cuss, call it a piece of shit and throw it at a coworker and sometimes at the toolbox and wall or door. I have vidoes of such behavior at peoples's request. I have an older Yard Mchine trimmer from 2010. If the rope breaks you have to buy a new recoil assembly. I tried putting a new rope on and it was useless I'm buying the new recoil assembly.

    I watched this video, among a few others, to be sure I was winding the recoil spring and pull-rope in the correct direction. Thank you. Now to be critical. You put a lot of emphasis on reconnecting the two wires to the kill switch, even suggesting using a multimeter to determine polarity. It does not matter, as the kill button just shorts out the ignition of the trimmer, so the wires can go on either pole, and the kill-function will still work just fine. Also, I noted a lot of rust in the recoil spring housing and around the dogs on the end of the shaft, but I notice NO effort on your part to lubricate any of the moving parts. A little WD-40 will help this trimmer last longer, and keeping it inside out of the rain, will stop further rusting. Where I want the lubrication quality to last longer, I mix 1/3 mineral oil to 2/3 WD-40 in my spray bottle.

    I've watched 5 or 6 videos with all kinds of solutions from rigs to drill + scew but yours is the fastest and simplest solution. My outer plasic peg that held the spring in place broke off on my homelite chainsaw. I replaced it with a flat head nail super glued. Thanks bro😄 As someone mentioned the solid metal side of the spring housing faces UP not Down. Makes it rewind easier.

    It does not matter which way you hook up the kill switch. All it does is short the magneto, and kills the spark to the spark plug. The switch is just a means of shorting thoose two wires. Either way you hook it up, it will work

  • @matthewinga9546
    @matthewinga9546 6 лет назад +4

    The notches are also used to keep the tension on the hook as you reload the coil back in.
    Use a small Allen key in the slot to hold the hook while dropping the coil in place.

    You put the spring on wrong . The metal disk face slides across the white string pulley . The exposed spring should face the green plastic housing . It will slide and spin better.

    recoil plate, what is the right direction?

  • @max98138
    @max98138 7 лет назад

    The wires that were going to the on off switch are the same ground wire. when the switch is on it breaks the ground to the coil. When the switch is in the off position it makes the ground connection and grounds out the engine. They are both the same wire with a switch to open or close the connection. Good video though.

  • @tim9430
    @tim9430 3 года назад

    The placement of the two wires on the switch do not matter. The switch just connects them to each other to complete the circuit. That's also why they used the same color wires (but that's not always the case).

  • @THEL0G1CAL1
    @THEL0G1CAL1 2 года назад

    You put the square nut on the wrong side. That said, are you sure the recoil spring goes with the solid part of the plate facing away from the rope? I ask because, when I pulled mine apart, the solid part of the disk/recoil spring was facing the rope. I am on my second or third season with this model, and the rope never did recoil properly. So I am in the middle of trying to fix it.

    Your recoil plate is wrong, it is supposed to encapsulate the spring like you have it but the plate goes against the pully and the spring side goes into the housing. Also you don't coil tension on the starter until it is assembled. That is why there is a notch in the pully for the string to bypass a wrap while you wind the string.
