    Sherlock's unexplained death didn't kill Sherlock either. The show stopped because Cumberbatch and Freeman got too famous and could never get their schedules together to make any more. Then after Una Stubbs died, they said it would feel wrong to make any more without her.

    Kandyman killed Doctor Who! Come on, you're having a laugh aren't you? The kiss of death was when Michael Grade decided the ratings of Doctor Who, and the stories on screen warranted the axe. He tried to axe it unsuccessfully in 1985, but starting in 1987, his successor Jonathan Powell (who arguably may have hated Doctor Who more than Grade did) scheduled Doctor Who against ITV's ratings juggernaut - Coronation Street. So if anything, it was a combo of Michael Grade, Jonathan Powell and Coronation Street.

    Michael Grade killed Doctor Who. It was noting to do with JNT. Grade hated Doctor Who and when he took over as BBC controller, he put in place numerous strategies (such as moving it from prime-time Saturday night, to a Wednesday slot that competed with ITV's flagship show, Coronation Street) to justify axing it. He axed it in 1989, not 85. The Kandyman had nothing to do with it. He was just a divisive element of one story. The juxtaposition of the saccharine and psychopathic is no new thing in sci-fi and fantasy.

      In 1985 Michael Grade took the first swing at the show by putting it on hiatus for 18 months.

      Kind of reminds me of when producer for EastEnders in 1989 Mike Gibbons was axing numerous characters, including Steven Beale, who was a baby at the time. He was planning a colossal storyline that would've seen Albert Square hit with a terrorist attack caused by the IRS, which would've killed off Pete Beale and would've left Simon Wicks (aka Wicksy and Steven's real dad) wheelchair bound. As for baby Steven, he was also going to be killed off after falling seriously ill, and Gibbons pitched the storyline to then scriptwriter David Yallop by morbidly writing the words, "Baby die". He was also planning to kill of Pete's twin Pauline Fowler with a terminal cancer plot, but thankfully, none of these storylines ever went through as people got sick and tired of Gibbons axing half the case that he was replaced by Michael Ferguson.

    The big problem with This Morning is not so much that it doesn't have a future, but that it doesn't have a past. 35 years on TV, and now it has to erase some 20 years of Phillip Schofield. They'll never be able to replay 'classic' moments, or look back fondly on this period. And, despite his proven innocence, they can't really celebrate the John Leslie era either, because of the way in which the events played out and lead to his sacking. So that knocks another couple of years off. So its only saleable legacy is Richard and Judy's 13 years. Which are also marred by the presence of Fred Talbot, so they have to airbrush out the iconic weather map feature. When the entire history of a 35 year old show is tainted to that degree, the smart move would be to rebrand it. Something similar, essentially the same, but with a clean sheet to start from.

    • @Treblaine
      @Treblaine Год назад +5

      I don't know why Schofield is in trouble for having consensual sex with an adult. What am I supposed to do? Berate a gay man for not still being married and remaining faithful to his now ex-wife? He shouldn't have said it was immoral, he should have said it's none of anyone's business.

    • @97channel
      @97channel Год назад +1

      @@Treblaine It's an interesting case. Tricky. I don't really have a steadfast opinion on it all, I can see some elements of the matter from different perspectives. I agree that he shouldn't be treated like a criminal nor feel the need to respond in the manner of one. He has faced no formal accusations or charges of criminality. There has certainly been a kangaroo court aspect to it all, particularly with the BBC interview which came across as some kind of trial. But I can also see why it has ended his career. I do think that there were immoral aspects to his behavior. It was immoral to have an affair whilst living a pretense of having a happy marriage. Nothing to do with his sexuality, but everything to do with breaking his wedding vows. Then there was the immorality of lying about it to friends, family, and effectively his audience. And given that rumors of the relationship had been circulating for several years, I think it is justified for questions to be asked about how much of those rumors were true. He lied about it all. As a proven liar, his word cannot now be taken on what aspects of the matter are true and false. There should be extreme caution to not let questions turn into accusations, but questions are important in this matter. And whilst I believe that there should never be an attitude of "No smoke without fire.", a fire has actually been discovered here. The question which people are effectively asking is, how far did the flames spread?

      The reason Doctor Who got cancelled was actually due to Warriors of the Deep. It was the main example of the shows decline despite being an episode in 1984 and the show managed to survive another 5 years.
      Season 22 also is a reason the show got cancelled due to the producers changing the format of the show, the show getting put on hiatus due to the controller of BBC not liking it and using Warriors of the Deep as his example, and then the show being brought back 18 months later with a change back to the original format and significantly less episodes than most series before it.
      Eventually the show was cancelled in 1989 after Season 26 was put on at the same time as Coronation Street and lost all of its viewers.
      The BBC heads at the time just wanted to kill the show. All Scifi after a period of time was killed off by the BBC.

On that episode, the Fonze rode his motorcycle up a ramp, daredevil style, and jumped it over a shark in a water tank. It was stupid, and most people thought that the quality of the show severely fell off after that. For me what killed Sherlock was that I quickly realised for him to look smart, everyone else had to appear very dumb!
    The thing with the original Sherlock Holmes books was, apart from his powers of deduction and reasoning, he used techniques that, at the time, were not used by the police or pathologists. But with the modern Sherlock you felt they had to make the police, pathologists and, even to an extent, John Watson far less intelligent than they would be.
    Two examples that hit it home:
    1/ The first in A Study in Pink - Sherlock examined the body of a dead woman and checked under the collar of her coat, which was still damp while the rest of it was now dry, suggesting she had been in the rain and had pulled her collar up to protect herself. Would the police or pathologist really not checked that for themselves?
    2/ In a later episode a child is kidnapped and the perpetrator left footprints, showing the length of his stride. The pathologist states this tells them "nothing" about who could have done it, with Sherlock replying it tells them the person's height, gait, etc. Again, you're telling me the pathologist wouldn't have known that?
    And again the techniques that Sherlock uses must surely be basic techniques for the police as well.
    Don't get me wrong, Benedict and Martin's portrayals were brilliant, I loved them as the characters, but the dumbing down of everyone else just made it too unrealistic.

There was a point where it just felt like everything happened and Sherlock was already there with the solution just because his mind is an unlimited wikipedia. The last season truly showed how weak it became and they'd be wise to just hold on to whatever is left of their show.

    I’m sorry but the Happiness Patrol/Candy man episode was brilliant. There was no dip in quality, there was Michael Grade who hated Doctor Who because it didn’t look like Star Wars, despite not giving it the budget to do so. Despite this, you know what? They made QUALITY tv. Colin Baker was hated at the time, and whilst I’ve heard he’s better in audio dramas (haven’t listened to them) he is my least favourite Doctor, from manner, to costume and everything in between he was imo awful, through no fault of his own but the next Doctor, Sylvester McCoy was brilliant, and Ace, she was ACE! Also leave AbFab alone, it’s one of the best comedies, and your description of it is inaccurate. I usually love you guys, but this video… sorry but nah.

      Colin Baker was only hated by Michael Grade, not viewers. He had a personal gripe with him and vindictively took his job because of it.
      Don't know where you're going by pretending Colin was loathed because he wasn't. I'm guessing you wasn't around or watching in 1985 and are regurgitating some anti-Colin bile that some 'fans' have spewed out over the years.

    • @hunyesmith03
      @hunyesmith03 Год назад

      @@rnw2739 He was NOT only hated by Michael Grade, this a is very dishonest portrayal. Colin Baker’s Doctor was simply not popular, or not AS popular as previous incarnations, especially at the beginning. This was due to the stark contrast between his incarnation and Davidson’s (& other previous) incarnation(s). Baker is a brilliant actor and did his best with the material and budget, and yes personal hatred by Grade given to him. However, his garish costume, more sisnister/dark personality and the fact he strangled his companion, an already established character in his first few moments in the role turned audiences against him. With that being said, I know that this was done in purpose and his character was meant to grow and change throughout his tenure, akin to Missy’s transformation from NuWho. He was never given this opportunity though since yes, as you say, Grade hated him. If I remember correctly, he said he would only renew the show if he was replaced.
      None of this however changes MY personal opinion on him as a Doctor, in MY opinion he was the worst Doctor, but I do understand that this may be because his character didn’t get the originally planned arc.
      As regards being around in 1985, No I wasn’t, and I wouldn’t be alive even for another 10 years, but you know what this is? Irrelevant. Historians specialising in ancient Egypt were not alive during the time but are still able to make comments and hold opinions on the subject. Also, his first episode was in 1984.
      As regards your ‘fans’ comment this is ridiculous gatekeeping, “regurgitating anti Colin bile”? No, it’s called having an opinion. You clearly love Baker’s Doctor, and that’s fine. I do not, and that is also fine, but it is disingenuous to paint his tenure as the doctor as you have done so, he was, and still is a lot of fans most hated Doctor. Me saying “he was hated at the time” could be construed as hyperbolic as I realise not everyone hated him for which I apologise, but hyperbole is a common human trait, and should be quite obvious to spot.
      I am not a Colin Baker hater “spewing ridiculous bile”, I am a dedicated Doctor Who Fan with opinions, as are you, but please don’t gatekeep Doctor Who.
      I will as a slight penance for my hyperbole & due to your clear love of his incarnation listen to a Colin Baker audio drama when I get the time, and/or go over a few of his classic serials again, but McCoy will likely still be my favourite Doctor from the original, then Hartnell, then Troughton and so on…
      Also, to reiterate I do believe that Colin Baker was jipped, and done a disservice, and could’ve been great, as he is (as I’ve heard) in Big Finish. His decision not to fil the regeneration scene though was by his own admission “selfish”, I’d tend to agree but when you consider that he’s a normal human who’s just been screwed over, it makes sense why he refused to film this.
      I’m sorry for the long comment I’m on the spectrum and have ADHD and get carried away sometimes, but if you read it, thank you. Enjoy the rest of your day! 😀

It was just a little show for a few pointy head Doctor Who fans. It was also very violent and it had lost its magic.”. His successor Jonathan Powell was no fan of the series either, and despised its producer, John Nathan-Turner, who he later said he wanted Nathan-Turner to "fuck off... or die, really". Despite the show getting incredibly and increasingly stronger scripts by the end of 1989, the show was seen as a burden to the BBC executives and so they cancelled it. The Kandyman isn't even a part of the reason why the show ended.
