- Lelystad is a municipality and a city in the centre of the Netherlands, and it is the capital of the province of Flevoland. The city, built on reclaimed land, was founded in 1967 and was named after Cornelis Lely, who engineered the Afsluitdijk, making the reclamation possible. Lelystad is approximately 3 metres (9.8 feet) below sea level.
Lelystad is built on the seabed of the former Zuiderzee. About 6500 years ago this wetland was above high tide level and inhabited; the Netherlands have steadily subsided since. Near Lelystad at Swifterbant, the oldest human skeletons in Western Europe were discovered. Due to rising water levels and storms, the peatlands were washed away, and the Lacus Flevo (in Roman times) grew to be the Almere (Middle Ages) and became the Zuiderzee. The Zuiderzee (Southern Sea) was the main transport route from Amsterdam to the North Sea and the Hanseatic League cities. Due to the many shipwrecks in Flevoland, Lelystad now houses the National Centre for Maritime History, with a museum and the shipyard that has built the Batavia replica.
After the Second World War the Zuiderzee Works continued, constructing the polder of Eastern Flevoland. In 1950 work commenced on several construction islands in the middle of the IJsselmeer. Lelystad-Haven was the largest island, and its wooden barracks housed a community of dyke-builders. In 1955 they reached the mainland, which made it possible to drive to Lelystad by car. One of the three pumping stations, which drained the polder in June 1957, was the diesel-powered Wortman in Lelystad-Haven. Until 1967 the only inhabitants of Lelystad were technical engineers and laborers and superintendents, living on the former construction island.
Lelystad is the largest municipality in the Netherlands in area, but a large part of that area is water: Markermeer and IJsselmeer. Another major area is the internationally famous nature park of Oostvaardersplassen, which arose naturally when the polder of South Flevoland was drained. Lelystad is also surrounded by a square of woodlands and parks and flat farmland. The importance of the landscape and sky is emphasized by several pieces of land art: engineers' work and works such as the Observatorium by Robert Morris.
The artificial islands of Marker Wadden lie immediately to the northwest of Lelystad. Construction started in 2016, and the first islands have already become important wildlife sites, with many species of birds coming to the islands during the breeding season.

Amazing video.
I'm your Fan.
Thanx my freind
Who else is from lelystad
I really wish I could live there
Perfect video 😍👍
Thanks 👋
extremely boring city
It has like 80.000 people, statistically, it has more shops, museums and tourists compared to for example, the 230.000ish Almere. Which btw, has not even 1 single museum. (Lelystad has 3)
If you take into account the very small size of the city, Lelystad actually has a lot. We're just thinking of it too much as a ''true capital'' like those in the older provinces. It's just a big town, and for that, it does remarkably well. Also being one of the greenest cities in NL.
Nice video .Thank you
🙏
In Lelystad ben je binnen de kwartier al uitgelopen xD
😁
Factually false, as it's one of the most spread-out cities in NL (proven by facts). This was due to the fact that it was to become a larger city, so many spaces were reserved for parks and nature. After the growth was adjusted and the city grew less quickly, the very spread out way the city was created remained. It's actually why the city has more costs than most of the cities, and still gets a bit of government support paying for how spread out it is.
In Amsterdam, in an hour of walking, I'm from one side to the other, in Lelystad.. pretty much also. It's quite unique (and American-suburb vibes-y, which is the one downside).
Een goede impressie van het centrum. Geen verkeer en het waait er vaak, dus frisse lucht. Mensen die hier wonen, houden van de stad. Er is vooral goede huisvesting. Huisje, boompje, beestje.
I had a pleasant experience of a day trip here and Batavia
Wow 😍👏👏
👋
Wow
✋
I love this city ❤
👍
lol but there is nothing there only Lowlands is fun
I so wish I could move to The Netherlands from the UK but because of Brexit I probably can't: I should have moved there decades ago 😕
I hope she will come to The Netherlands for vacation soon..
Great video and nicely filmed! But sorry to say, I think Lelystad is one the ugliest cities in The Netherlands.

I have heard this too
Of course, the city is less lively, but I really liked Batavia.
And that area is a special tourist attraction.
Don't be sorry, it's the truth 😄😄😄
Complete bullshit your'e talking. The city council is very busy to develop a lot off new building. Also the area around the ( bus)station will be renewed with a lot off Green and Trees + Cafe area.
Furthermore on the south side of Lelystad they are building 10000 homes within next 10 years. There is a new Cinema next to the theater and to complete it they are working on a square with many cafe's around it. Herein are also new appartments (ready within 5 months)
A new hospital will be build and ready in 2028.
Then there is a complete new airport waiting to be opened. (n2 discussion) and a study for a new railroad to Northern part of the Netherlands and Germany is still going and it looks that it will be constructed within 10years. There,s greenlight and funds from Brussels ( EU) for it also.
So why always so negative about Lelystad if you dont like it here move to somewhere else, and if you dont live here WTF are you talking about?
At least there is no dirt and litter like here in the UK
