Lost my barber that night. He cut my hair earlier that same week. Suddenly I go grab food that night, only to sit down and see on the news that the man that cut my hair just days earlier was murdered? In a hate crime? At a church that I drive by multiple times throughout the week? No, like what do you mean? All these years later and it’s still heart shattering and honestly still hard to accept. God rest the souls of all who lost their lives that tragic night.
@@justindyches5510 You’re telling me. Honestly he’d only been cutting my hair for like three Months or so so I didn’t know him that well. But Christ almighty. You get you hair cut and then a week later, you go home, turn on the news and see your barber’s name on tv as a victim of a hate crime? At a church you’ve gone past countless times? It’s awful.
Wow. I knew they invited him in but I didn’t realize they literally addressed him when he walked in and offered a seat next to the pastor so he would feel included in the service. They embraced him as one of their own and offered him the sense of community he clearly needed. God this is horrifying.
I heard a story after the shooting that he told police that everyone was so nice to him at the Bible study that he **almost** couldn’t do it. So horrible.
Ever wonder why VIDEO NEWS RELEASE are legal to be portrayed as actually events as they're being passed off as the News to the gullible American masses?

I’m glad she made it. It should become culture to have a few members of the church to be armed concealed carriers to prevent anything like this from happening again.
I looked up the survivors and thankfully Miss Polly (caller) survived but she lost 2 family members. She said she forgives the shooter. She also received a settlement of 5 million dollars from the DOJ as a survivor. This doesn’t at all “fix” what happened or the horror of course but I was so relieved to see that she survived! So scary!
@@SSgreen09 yeah .....people seem to lack empathy .......shooter actively killing people and your asking what color shirt he has on......how many shots he fired.
@@sethtone8634 she did her job though. It's the operators responsibility to get as much information as possible to avoid further confusion and chaos when law enforcement arrives.
Exactly…. A coward of the worse type… went on to shoot a church full of people who were not armed and physically weaker (either by age or gender)… and when the moment came to self delete… he was scared.
This is so much more horrible than I ever imagined. It’s one thing to be crazy walk into a building and just spray at a bunch of people you have never met. But to go in, talk with them laugh with them, offer parts of the conversation and get to know them and then still go through with this, that’s a whole different level.
Especially because this was a Christian church. I know a lot of people have negative opinions and experiences with Christianity. But you can see them hugging each other in this video. That's how some churches are, and that's how they're meant to be. These are the kind of people who will open their hearts to everyone and though they have their beliefs, they deeply want others to be saved.
Very True,, and there's a vile, racist, child minded comment made by someone saying "Dillon has more heart than most black people", vile human being...YT bans people for the silliest comments yet this person gets to comment things like this. This world. idk
It's wild bro, bowl cuts were popular when I was in middle school. But they are forever etched into my mind as the official haircut of little bony punks who try to act edgy and tough.
@@corndogko1661 That means when they are so skinny that their bones are poking out. Maybe I just lived in a rough area but the kind of kids I'm talking about were exomorphic in terms of build. They would be overly aggressive to compensate for being so small. Another common thing was acting like they were going to punch you then saying you flinched. I'm a bigger dude and never got in trouble growing up, other than when it came to fighting these types of kids. Their bones would poke you while grappling with them in the fight. Also they all had this same haircut though. No lie. Or rat tails.
This is truly horrible, entering a place where others go for prayer and community and then doing something completely evil is atrocious. I can’t understand and am glad that I can’t understand what it takes to do something so mean.
Why didn't god stop this then? What's the point of having armed officers to protect the public when god is omnipresent and omniscient anyways and can easily use magic?
I just wanna say - I think you’re the only channel outside of Dreading that really really pays attention to the victims and honors them. Usually in types of documentaries like this, I find myself disgusted w the actions of the shooter; and I still do in this video. but I also mourn all of the victims and recognize their significance within the church. the way you introduce them broke my heart, truly. Wonderful work man, please keep it up. I wish your channel was monetized so I could slap you with the super thanks.
I watch a lot of crime stories. This is the first time i can say the 911 operator was fabulous!! Kudos to her. Most seem to have an attitude, don't listen properly and actually yell at callers. I'm from the South and her immediately calling her Miss Polly had me choked up. She showed a real care and empathy for the victims.
@@debraperez7171 agreed, she was great and I choked up at “Miss Polly” too. There have been a few calls I’ve heard where the dispatchers have been *terrific*, but often it’s like you said - copping an attitude or not listening well. No sense of urgency, sometimes. It’s awful. And I won’t pretend that I’d be able to do their job - I’m not tough enough for it, and I work in a funeral home surrounded by death and grieving families all the time.
@@ysaethwr oh my. It takes a very special person to deal with grieving familys day in and day out. You must have great empathy for people's suffering. ♡
This is the scariest, most delicate situation one can be in as a victim. Even worse if you’re on the phone & the operator is both asking you to be quiet & proceeds to ask hundreds of questions. I’m sure this is just 911 protocol but it’s ridiculous.
exactly my thoughts. when she told the woman not to make any noise... and then proceeded to ask "what's happening" when more bullets were heard..? the woman on the phone must have been so stressed and conflicted...
I would argue that one facet of being good is being potentially dangerous to bad people. If not for yourself, for the people you care about. I don't find it particularly good to be useless in the face of evil. For evil to fail, people have to refuse to be victims. Relying on other people to do it for you is like relying on other people to choose what you eat or what job to do. No one can provide security for you and yours better than you can, and it's a modern conceit that you can just abdicate that responsibility to government.
Because this world is an evil, evil place. Some souls are just too pure and good and kind and trusting. Whether you’re religious or not, it’s a general understanding that goood people, go too soon.
I can’t believe how long the police took to respond to a mass shooting. The monster strolled out of there. God bless everyone affected by this. To welcome someone with open arms and go out of your way to make them comfortable only for this to happen-it is heartbreaking.
You know what it is... nobody was wearing their puffer jackets... if man wearing is puffer jacket then man wudda binso scared over the mandem in his puffer jacket he would've ran off to hide in the nearest McDonald's toilet innit.
What’s up with the puffer jacket? I think it’s summer although snow ❄️ is pictured. So no puffer jackets? Are we skiing ⛷? It’s S Carolina I don’t think it snows much. I confuse
It really is terrifying listening to him telling the police exactly what he did with no sense of shame or remorse. The way he chuckles as he tells his story he seems to be relishing the moment, which is why I don’t think he had any intention of killing himself because he wanted some kind of recognition. Truly incredible how someone can become so broken.
@NeowaffenAesthetics it was a room full of community leaders. Inspirational, loving people with more value than you could ever possess, you scourge. You, the pathetic shooter, and all other who sympathize with his actions or ideas are vile rotten blights on our society. Ironic, considering that's how you view me and other with my skin. 911 operators piss me off. I seen a video about this guy who broke into a lady’s house. The lady calls 911 and tells them about the intruder. She tells them he’s coming up the stairs i can’t talk I have to go and hangs up the phone. Tell me why the operator CALLS her back !!! Unbelievable

Before you mentioned him getting arrested for the possession of Suboxone I was pretty sure he was addicted to opiates because at 15:44 when you said “he would fall asleep virtually any time he was stationary” sounds exactly like someone blasted off opiates the whole Suboxone thing just confirms my suspicion
Thank you for making this very informative video, the recording on the 911 call was heartbreaking. Rest in paradise to the 9 victims and the 3 surviving victims.
The 911 call upset me so bad I can't believe the 911 r e p could hear the gun shots and still continue asking questions without even acknowledging that she hears gunshots. Unbelievable!
@tinathomas8593 the minute the dispatcher has an address, police are on the way. Yes she is continuing to ask questions because 1) the more information responders have the better and 2) it helps keep the caller calm.
That interrogation got me so riled. Him talking about what he did to them so casually after they graciously welcomed him in. This story hits my a lot harder than most and i follow a lot of stories
@@crimehousechronicles4175 because he’s now unarmed and they want him To admit to crimes. if he didn’t violate his own rights it’s a lot harder to convict him
@Albatross Featherton that's part of the "Reid technique." Interrogators do it to make him feel comfortable, and so he'll keep talking. He's been searched, and these 2 cops would snap him like the twig he is. It happens in most if not all homicide interrogations.
@Albatross Featherton it's like offering a person a cigarette and allowing them to smoke it Indoors. Food, beverages, tobacco, and whatever else that will keep the subject talking will absolutely be used as a means to keep their lips flapping.
This is one of the most heinous act of evil I have ever come across. How do you even begin to commit a crime at a place of worship. This is the devils work honestly.
After leaving the church, he didn’t attempt to kill himself because he ran out of bullets. He says in the interview he expected police to be outside and when confronted, he would kill himself. But no police were outside so he drove away.
I'm not Christian but I'd never dream of doing something like this. It seems like these people genuinely wanted him to feel welcomed. It's terrible anyone would do this to anyone.
@sarahmarieboulerice3134 that’s like Karen asking “why aren’t you black?” In Mean Girls. Some people believe different things than you. Some people are different religions, some people don’t believe in god. It’s fine. Believe what you want, you don’t need to question why people aren’t Christian.
it's spooky because growing up, I was almost exactly like this kid. idk what went differently that I didn't end up hurting anyone but I'm so fucking grateful to my parents and grandmother for raising me the way they did.
You were a closeted racist, full of repressed rage, or just unmotivated and unfocused? Dylan missed so much school I don’t see why the high school just let him flunk out of 9th grade. Somebody, a teacher, a guidance counselor, heck, even a lunch lady or the janitor could have taken him under wing. A janitor in my school where I taught first grade told me about this seventh grader who’d been in my class years before, moved away, then came back. He was absent and truant a lot, failing his classes, always looked unhappy. When I realized who he was, I convinced the janitor to bring him to me in the library after class. He’d been through lots of stuff like Dylan, parents divorcing, remarrying, divorcing, moving all over, having step siblings only to lose them, a real mess. It was nothing official, but he agreed to try tutoring with me. An assessment revealed he was dyslexic and reading on a grade three level. No wonder he was failing grade seven! By year’s end, I convinced his father with whom he’d moved back, to enroll him in one of the non-graded academies for non-traditional students. There, he got the attention and kind of approach he needed. He was able to rejoin a regular high school as a junior and graduated only eight months late, but still 18, so he didn’t stick out as left back. He’s now a master bricklayer and stone mason, and has his own business. It sounds like your Grandma’s presence in your life may have motivated you to straighten up or face her consequences.
So you were quiet and aloof? That doesn't suggest that you will develop murderous intentions my guy, this documentary doesn't delve into the shooters background and history to draw accurate comparisons. You can tell from your comment that you're a decent person, who takes pride in not being a POS. My grandfather lived and still lives in Charleston, fortunately he wasn't a victim of this tragic event. But I hope the victims of the event are resting in peace.
I remember seeing pictures of Dylan wearing a bulletproof vest while handcuffed but I’ve never seen where he was initially cuffed and I must say that was the calmest car police pursuit/vehicle approach I’ve ever witnessed. Ppl have been manhandled, attacked, yelled at for less. Its a wow for me. The 911 call was definitely suspenseful and I love how she still called on Jesus. A horrible moment in USA history.
I live 5 miles away from where he was cuffed at. The intersection there on Hwy 74 is generally busy, as it was this day. When the police here pulled Roof over, he kept his hands on the steering wheel, and had the window down. When the officer approached the window, Roof told him "I know you are looking for me." The officer asked where his gun was located, and he told him in the back seat. He was then removed from the car, and taken into custody. Had the Shelby police escalated the situation, he may have went for his gun, and ended up injuring or killing one of them, or possibly a motorist, or someone at the gas station across the street. The nine at the church were already too many.
The fact that he is so shameless about this horrific act is baffling. During the interrogation he speaks as if he was doing chores or going to work , like this was a normal day for him. He murdered innocent people in cold blood for hateful purposes and he feels totally justified. He didn't know these people, they didn't do anything to him, they were in church honoring God, and he slaughtered them. I hope his victims are safe in heaven with God because they don't deserve any less.
...it's BECAUSE he, CLEARLY, barely has a double-digit #IQ, dude. NOTHING "baffling" about his TOTAL LACK of intellectual capacity to THINK. VERY COMMON amongst southern whites in #amerikkka. #FACT
Dispatcher had phenomenal training, always reassuring and telling her to keep quiet. Reacting in real time to the events and acting appropriately, refreshing to hear from other's.
He wanted to start a race war. He looked up to racist, far right, neo nazi groups. He had every opportunity to just leave and spare their lives. But he didn't, he killed the very people that gave him love and care and respect. It's heartbreaking. The way he laughed in the interrogation made me sick to my stomach. And im actually really glad that they arrested Joseph. If someone tells you something like that even playing around, you tell the police.
Democrats started the kkk, the republican party was made by a group of black men. But other than that I agree with everything you said. RIP to the victims 💙
This dude is a coward to the core. Why didn’t he pull up on a gang set of black folks? Because they would have possibly shot back at him. He targeted folks who didn’t pose any threat and had all of their guard down. There is a special place in the after life for ppl like Dylan.
He meant for it to be as bad and shocking as possible--going to a church and shooting worshippers. He wanted people learning about the act to feel as much pain as possible. He is truly despicable. Those good people treated him with kindness when he arrived, and still he had no mercy. God bless their souls and the survivors.
It had WAYYYYYY less to do with them being religious than it had to do with them being black. Don't get it twisted, this was a racial hate crime, not a religious one. He just realized a black church would have the most volume of black people.
I grew up blocks away from that church. Used to wait there for a bus when I was in college, and everyone there was always incredibly kind to me even though I was a random punk just hanging out. Something deeply beautiful about the Holy City was shattered by Dylan Roofe. Subhanallah I have never wanted a human to suffer quite as much as I want this guy to suffer.

It’s a tragic job these 911 operators have. Knowing you’re the last person they speak to and putting all their trust in u to save them, hearing tragedies play out in the moment. Can’t imagine the trauma it has to cause some of them
They should probably train them better and get people with some common sense, at least. This operator keeps telling her to be as quiet as possible and then asks her questions. Just shut up and get the police there. They need to know when it is appropriate to push for further information, and when the caller is in a room with an active shooter is not the time to do that.

That doesn't really make a lot of sense. One guy making a targeted attack doesn't mean the world is gonna go crazy around you. The dude clearly wasn't gonna be coming around again.

What is sad is how this could affect churches with black congregations welcoming white ppl into their fold, rightfully so. The best church i ever attended was an all black church. When they asked for visitors, all eyes turned to me and my friend .... we were white. By the end of the evening, we were treated as their own. They were the sweetest kindest ppl in a church i had ever met .. and i joined the church and was there for a little over a year until i moved away. I still am in touch with some of them years later. I was on the way home from a small family vacation when this tragedy occured. I was ten, and eating McDonald's in Georgia. It was the first mass shooting that I was old enough to comprehend it. I remember seeing the headline from across the dining room and feeling my heart drop to my stomach. Nice grandma's and grandpa's were killed because they were brown. And I didn't understand that. At the time, I knew I was brown. I wasn't their dark pretty chocolate brown, I was sandy brown. My mother was white like the murderer. Why would someone who looked like my mum murder nice brown people like me? Almost a decade later, I still wish I knew why.
I’m sorry you had to deal with this! Unfortunately all people are born with a sin nature and make right or wrong choices daily. This was a horrific choice this kid made now he’s reaping what he’s sown. You have to ultimately ask yourself have I always made the right choices? We do this by the schoolmaster or meaning the 10 commandments. One of them being Thou shalt not kill. I know this doesn’t seem fair but killing in Gods eyes is just as bad as lying or stealing. We have to ultimately make one choice in our lives that gives us eternal hope. If you’ve broken just one of the Ten Commandments, The Lord says you’re guilty of all of them. But He made a way for we as sinners by sending His only Son who committed no sin and died sacrificially for everyone. Jesus Christ died for you but in three days was risen from the dead just like the scriptures say. The number 1 thing you need to do is understand we are all sinners and need a Savior. To repent and and admit you know you’ve sinned against a Holy God and ask Him to save you from this wicked life is the most important decision you can make. To understand that and turn from sin is to repent like doing a 180 degree turn and to understand that just like you’re reading this right now that Jesus Christ literally rose from the dead! He’s the only one who can save! This is a tragic story above. But each one of those people that were gunned down that placed their faith in Christ are with Him in eternity! Same goes for you if you realize that it’s by grace you are saved through faith and not of yourself but the gift of God not of works lest any man should boast.
I was 6 at the time and do not remember it but I live in Texas where we have all kinds of people, white, black, brown, Asian, Jews, Muslims, Christian, Buddhist, atheist, bi-racial, Native American, gay, straight etc. I just do not understand hating people, let alone killing them, because of their skin color, religion, sexuality etc. This guy paints a horrible picture of white males. We are not like this. Most of us are accepting of most people (personally I draw the line at hard drug users, people who beat their spouses or kids or guys who spent decades in prison for violent crimes). It probably would have been a very loving environment in that church, before he unleashed hate.

Sad and scary that there are monsters out there like this fool. He needed immediate justice. Tough job interviewing this creep. The officers tried to stay cool and get as much incriminating evidence as possible.
I had a classmate in the 9th grade who I thought was friendly and very sweet. That is until 10th grade when he racially targeted me. I also noticed he became friends with another boy who would do the same thing. Possibly an influence. That being said, one influence can change a person for the worse. And that’s what happened to this shooter.
Him being so casual describing what he just did the evening before is chilling. He said "the cops must not be doing their jobs because I thought there would be cops waiting outside because I shot so many times."
I went some months after. Met a women that brought flowers and was crying. She prayed for us , the victims and the victims families. I forgot about that day until now. So sad.

I would argue that one facet of being good is being potentially dangerous to bad people. If not for yourself, for the people you care about.

Same. It’s a “wow” for me too. But I’ve also noticed the roughing up or man handling usually happens to non-white ppl.
I live 5 miles away from where he was cuffed at.
The intersection there on Hwy 74 is generally busy, as it was this day.
When the police here pulled Roof over, he kept his hands on the steering wheel, and had the window down.
When the officer approached the window, Roof told him "I know you are looking for me."
The officer asked where his gun was located, and he told him in the back seat.

This story hit home and breaks my heart for the innocent victims.
