It was not uncommon for onlookers to faint due to the shocking nature of the scene. The ceremony was altered in 1891 due to reports that visiting foreign dignitaries had described the spectacle as 'upsetting' and 'barbaric' Keen to avoid a diplomatic incident, the penguin element of the ceremony was removed completely.

The original 'changing of the guard' ceremony involved a member of the household cavalry sexually defiling and then strangling a live penguin in the middle of Horse Guards Parade.
I would have to see proof before I believe that one.
Brisdad53 - But they did explode on the telly... ;-)
wish we still spoke this way
The British accents that I miss. Whats odd is that in those days in the US in areas of the Northeast, you could hear a bit of the same accents. Like the actors in the old black and white movies. But its disappearing now like a lot of our civility and manners replaced with what you see a lot of here in these comments.
No-one's stopping you.

"Revolver THROWN at the king", the definitive reason British forces were pushed back to the beaches at Dunkirk so quickly. Little known fact: The Germans actually had no guns at all when they began the attack.
Watching this some 81 years later, King Edwards words send a chill through you. The years that followed the earth would battle evil from the greatest depths of hell.
ddylla85 If this guy remained in power there never would have been a world war II
Milaan Vigraham He was a constitutional monarch. He wasn't "in power"- Parliament was. As for this man having the ability to prevent the Second World War, presumably because of his fondness for the Nazis, do you really think the Germans wouldn't have invaded virtually all of Europe, taken on the Soviet Union, and declared war on the United States, if only someone going by the name of Edward VIII had continued to sit on a ceremonial throne in England?
Which nation atom bombed two civilian centres?
@@jasberryram4901 military industrial cities*. And it was necessary. Read up on Okinawa, it'll show you what war by invasion of the home islands would look like. Suicide soldiers, civilians being used as bait and traps against allied soldiers, every inch being defended to the death with no hope for surrender. Dropping the bombs saved millions of lives on both sides.
'Devoted sovereign'?! Immature, spoilt and devoted only to himself and his woman more like.
+Charles Young .... they 'sailed off to the Bahamas' by order of the government.
+JohnPaul Dixon There is an element of truth in that. Psychologically he was as his warped parents made him. The whole Hanoverian line were emotionally crippled, hated their parents, wives, children, etc.
+JohnPaul Dixon He served his time at the front in WW1 and was a great servant to disabled servicemen.
u listened to his speech? he was a great man to resign .
martmart1 ... did he jump or was he pushed, doesn't really matter but abdicating didn't make him a 'great man'. Notwithstanding his fondness for Hitler the fact that he was determined to be with Simpson made his position as monarch untenable.
It's saddening to hear them talk about wishing not for another war and so on, only for a new one to happen just 3 years later. Indeed it makes you wonder how many men in this reel were no longer alive after 10 years.
Just be thankful we got out of Obama 8 years over here with out WW III
legend says the moment the assassin was arrested, they asked if he would like some tea.
One of the mass shooters, they let him go back home...took him...to get some things he wanted. Seriously. People don't realize why the police did it. To comfort him to make questioning him easier. Giving him that benefit would put him and the police on better terms. A mind game. People thought it was disgusting they took him home to get his things...nope...he was so sick, he did not see that they were playing him by playing good cop.
You can bet he got a cup at the police station
Why wouldn't you offer a detainee some refreshment? Because in US movies the first thing you do with a suspect is beat them to death?
Iv honestly never been more disappointed with a video before

"Princess Elizabeth"!? HOW OLD IS THAT WOMAN???
Nuno Alex Damn near 100yrs.
She was born in 1926, and would have been 10 in 1936.
I think shes in her early 90's now
Teamgeist
Ouch!
Legend haa that everytime any englishman says "Long Live our Noble Queen" the lady gets extra 10s of life
I'm most impressed that they're all able to grow their hair out like that. o_o

@@Drkush2022 whoosh

Commander Prinz Eugen no, it is not.
HAHAHAHA
Why am I watching this?
To get some exposure to class, honor and a way of life passed and missed.
You know
It is sad to think that many of those young soldiers would be dead in just a few more years. Especially when the king mentioned that so few in attendance fought in the Great War.
When the Great Britain was the most powerfull country in the world
I'm so glad he wasn't our King at the outbreak of the War. George the Sixth was a far better Monarch than Edward could ever have been.
And a year later the " beloved King" would totally screw England over for Wallis Simpson. Ed the 8th was a real piece of work!
Indeed - less than that - assassination attempt 16th July - abdication 10th December 1936 - as for the would be assassin - see www.theguardian.com/world/2020/jun/28/british-state-covered-up-plot-to-assassinate-king-edward-viii
The "devoted Sovereign" LOL
Hardly, he saved England by doing that.
Why do I feel it is the same goddamn British person narrating ALL the “old British news”?!
Faris Zurub The news reader probably get selected on the sounding and accent of their voice.
I feel the same tbh
Besides audio quality was far worse back then so people sounded more similar on tv or radio
Ok but why does that make him a god damm person ?
It was common practice for broadcasters and people on TV to sound like that. I forgot what this particular accent was called but you can hear it up until 1960s movies
"Era of Peace." Three years later half those soldiers were dead, and the greatest conflict Earth has ever seen raged over Europe, and a couple years after that, the Pacific.
Amazing that the little princess is still alive and is now Queen.
how many bears died to make this parade possible?
Tell me they no longer make those crazy hats out of the real thing.
Well, they were going to die anyway! So....
Yes they do make 'those hats' out of real bearskin, it is part of British military tradition.
But if you we're worried about the animals themselves they are killed as part of a necessary culling by the Canadian government, in order to keep their numbers down.
nts821 how many trolls died to make you?
thousands and it is still going on. fake fur could be used but that is asking too much to rid this stupid tradition.
“Hooligans have knocked over a dustbin in Shaftesbury”
The perpetrator THREW the GUN at the King.
All I can say is that he wasn't very well trained.
The two rules of being a King:
1) Look good in the uniform
2) Don't fall off the horse.
This comment section is utter cancer.
Inopibus it's embarrassing how none of these commenters have any notion of History whatsoever
Inopibus bunch of idiot Drumpf supporters
Reality Hurts Allah,Jesus,God Fuck them all apparently you don't understand the term ironic
John Gulbunny wow you're an idiot

You'll know that this is a really old video when you hear the narrator say "Princess Elisabeth"
Right on point
"The calmness and dignity, true to his character". Edward Eighth?! Not so you'd notice.
Mission failed well get em next time
he got himself.
Policeman: Oh look, there's a revolver lying there near the King. I'll kick it, just to be safe.
Dang! Even in black and white, those columns of grenadiers are an impressive sight.
"Princess Elizabeth." It's the little things that make me smile.
Moe: Ok Curly. Here is the plan. When the king nears the crowd, use this revolver to kill him. Get it?
Curly: Sure Moe! Got it! Nyuk! Nyuk! Nyuk!
Throws gun at king.
One big free Loader Edward VIII. Churchill truly had enough of him, being pal to AH
+Imran Khan Stanley Baldwin and an Archbishop of Canterbury of somewhat dubious character (Lang) with the conspiracy of Beaverbrook forced the abdication. The victors then had the ability to write the history.
+wholeNwon There's was absolutely no way Wallis Simpson a multiple divorced woman could become Queen. It was against the rules.... It was as simple as that.
it didn't if Edward VIII would be a good or bad king parliament would've dealt with that side.
saw Duchess in DOORS m
Mark Gable
Gotta give that man some screwed up kind of props; this man just tried to assassinate the king within sight of his army
Of course, we now know the real reason why he "abdicated" hint..... he liked goose-stepping soldiers a bit too much...... and they asked him to get lost before he became too big of an embarrassment....
Great audio quality
We really need to do something about all the thrown-gun crime these days!
This year, 1936, the British Empire was the greatest empire in history.
i was today years old when i found out there was an assassination attempt against Edward VIII
He wasn't a 'devoted sovereign' for very long.
I’ve always been curious why each generation people look & sound so differently
Oh boy😳
It has to do with recording devices
Its just the accent they do so they could be more understood back then
totally different cultures
@@Ih8liarsandusers it has nothing to do with recording devices lol wtf
God dangit grandpa, how many times do I have to tell you that Revolvers doesn't work like that!
@ 3:00 mark never again, WOW these people really need to say what they mean & then stick to that, NEVER AGAIN, yet WW2 straight after King of Yugoslavia is killed & the foreign minister from France, also then The Balkans war, never again was said by the united nations after WW2, always never again the horrors of war ? Then you have the old guards of the crown, that sit behind the curtains & tell the king/Queen of England & the nations leaders of what really needs to be done, we need the USA to be our Police force of the world & start some from of political leadership which all nations can speaks words to the world, re: United Nations yet nothing was done for Korean war, Vietnam war & the Wars in Africa & then the Balkans as well ? Mass murder by leaders & generals on all sides but they rule out the Germans as if they were the most evil of evil, yet ISRAEL are doing what the Germans did in WW2 to this day in front of the world & yet nothing is done by the United Nations or WORLD LEADERS to help the Palestinians since they lost their own lands to ISRAEL & MOSSAD doing its bidding for the USA as well ?
Mick.T. Shaft champ i agree with you, thats my point, its all fuc-ked up, the USA & other political leaders either join with the USA or they will make you pay ?
Sheldon Brock Well said, lol :)
+7071t6 ."...ISRAEL are doing what the Germans did in WW2..." So which countries have they overrun, (they even returned the Sinai back to Egypt after the 6-day war) and where are the Arabs being gassed?
The mechanism causing the elimation of a whole religion / ethnic group /religion, meaning the Jews (plus Sinti and Roma, Communists, Homosexualles, mentally handicapped) whether old people, women or children, has been unsurpassed in human history. As much I criticize the British Empire , this cannot be compared to any other genocide. Remember, the Holocaust took place over approx. 6 years, the British Empire a few hundred longer. But there again it's popular to "have a go at Israel". And with the Israeli/Palestine conflict, there are two sides. Take a visit to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum to learn more about "death is death".
BTW the Astors and Rockefellers are not Jewish.
I could listen to the king talk for hours cause I love his voice and vocabulary he uses. These days people talk like "whats sup my nigga"....... or "what's good"...... Back in the it was "good evening sir".......
Yeah, the days when people talked English.
He must have found it impossible to carry the heavy burden of responsibility and to discharge his duties as king as he would wish to do, without the help and support of the woman he loved.
If u look into edwards and Wallis’s relationship you’ll see it wasn’t a fairytale as it may seem, and they were also nazi sympathisers, I personally just think Edward used Wallis as a scapegoat because he knew he couldn’t do his job, just a shame that king George got the ugly end of it all
"Princess Elizabeth". Strange to hear that instead of Queen Elizabeth.
It'd have been even more British if he'd have thrown a teapot.
Dont be silly we Brits value tea pots above revolvers
I know it's not all that Important but...I can see my house from here !!
Fritz Lee I didn't see any trash can
Tragon76 This man’s name isn’t Oscar
Considering that Edward gave up the thrown for a American Socialite, the assassination attempt wouldn't have had that much of a effect of history.
This is a historic document and people put thumbs down. What is that all about?
4:22 Whose heart is not thrilled with loyalty and devotion as the King rides off? I'll answer that for you chap: those who are loyally devoted to reserve that loyalty and devotion for themselves.
does an empire really rejoice for its king?
One would hope? I recall that we did back then?
" such terrible dayys "
A few years later World War 2 breakes out...
Too bad this isn't in color because the soldiers would have looked so cool in color.
Go to 4:30 Did the revolver fail to fire? Was is capable of firing? Or did McMann throw the gun as a symbol?
This was the same King that also showed sympathy to the Nazi Party? And who abdicated the throne for a wife who had 3 ex-husbands?
hellfire951 yep
We never should have gone to war with Germany
hellfire951 prick not this king his brother
A smoking ChickenFish they didnt.
He abdicated in 1936 happily his litle brother, the great king george VI took his place
1- the hats are definitely odd
2- why have a gun if you’re just gonna throw it

were those uniforms also used in The Wizard of Oz ?
Kinda ironic. He hoped for no more war and just 3 years later one of the biggest wars ever fought started
A fine speech by King Edward there.
4:32 for the event😁

What's with all these anti monarchists?
You see, it all started with this thing called "The Enlightenment Era"....
Most people here likely aren't anti-monarchists, we just don't like Edward. He was an avid supporter of Germany and abdicated the throne, which is tradition is much more shameful than it seems.
Nazi Germany.

how many bears were killed to make each fur hat
dc don't worry, it's too late to give them back.
They're British. They'll kill anything to get what they want.

I guess this is Footage of the last Glorious Days of the British Empire.
Great footage,and very impressive!
Were those Dutch marines globally famous in 1936 then?
Little did he know ww2 was 3 years away

"I'm having at you, sir!", quipped the assassin. "Well, I greatly appreciate your candor, Mr. Assassin", retorted the potentate. The ensuing scene provided a daunting feast of horror for the flabbergasted onlookers, aghast in utter shock of what was to transpire.
Description
A guillotine is an apparatus designed for efficiently carrying out executions by beheading. The device consists of a tall, upright frame with a weighted and angled blade suspended at the top. The condemned person is secured with stocks at the bottom of the frame, positioning the neck directly below the blade.
