    I'm an Englishman in my mid-sixties and I have wonderful memories of Paddy lodgers in our poor house working on the M1. Wow! That was around 1960. Such wonderful men. Big and joyful. Generous and gifted with life. Making money through hard work and a future unfolding. They reckoned the digs were the best this side of the water. I reckon their company was one of the best things in my life.

    Luke Kelly inspires deep and sacred feellings to me. As an offering to him I wish to translate as many of his songs as I can into my catalan language:
    Vine fill meu estimat i et diré què farem;
    despulla’t solet i vés al llit i uns fets et contaré,
    del papa tracten fillet meu, un home que no veus mai
    perquè va haver de deixar la llar, i ara és lluny de tu i de mi.
    Recorda, amor, tot i que és lluny, ell és el papa estimat.
    Amb fred i calor, tothora treballant, en anglesos camins.
    Ara quan caus i et fas mal i et sents molt malament,
    no trobes cap mena de consol si el papa cerques corrents;
    perquè l´únic temps que ell va ser amb tu fóu en el teu naixement;
    no tenia què fer, no treballava enlloc i signava a l’atur.
    Recorda amor que ell vol ser amb tu però cal treballar lluny,
    amb fred i calor, tothora treballant, en anglesos camins.
    Cert, voldríem el papa aquí, i tant!, fóra bonic;
    tenir el treball prop de la llar i veure’l en tot moment,
    prô els pobres no podem escollir i cal aguantar el jóu
    perquè necessitem tenir els diners que el papa guanya lluny.
    Recorda amor que el papa et vol, aviat el tindrem aquí
    una setmana o dues, amb mi i amb tu, quan els camins seran fets.

      I don't think it's true to say that Luke was a traveller by blood. He travelled around quite a bit and performed at benefit concerts for the Irish Traveller community, but this was mainly because he had a beautiful heart and understood the importance and sheer necessity for equality. We lost a beautiful soul in Luke Kelly and his voice echos into eternity.

    Come me little son
    And I will tell you what we'll do
    Undress yourself and get into bed
    And a tale I'll tell to you
    It's all about your daddy
    He's a man you seldom see
    For he has to roam, far away from home
    Away from you and me
    Remember laddie, he's still your dad
    Though he's working far away
    In the cold and heat, all the hours of the week
    On England's motorway
    Now when you fall and hurt yourself
    And get at feeling bad
    It isn't any good
    To go running for your dad
    For the only time since you've were born
    He's had to spend with you
    He was out on the job, and we hadn't a bob
    He was signing on the brew
    Remember laddie, he's still your dad
    Though he's working far away
    In the cold and heat, all the hours of the week
    On England's motorway
    Sure we'd like your daddy here
    Yes sure it would be fine
    To have him working nearer home
    And to see him all the time
    But beggars can't be choosers
    And we have to bear our load
    For we need the money your daddy earns
    A-workin' on the road
    Remember laddie, he's still your dad
    And he's soon be home to stay
    For a week or two, with me and you
    When he's built the motorway

      Spent a month cycling to and from
      Hospital waiting on and helping my father pass on by and die.
      Always thought he hated me
      Till I spent those hard weeks days
      And hour's by his side till his end.
      I knew without the use of words
      That no matter what life we waste
      He still loved me as I loved him.

      Make Our Father Who is Above Us
      And Who is Within Us PROUD.
      By making the first move towards you're earthly father.
      Be persistent and remain patient with him
      Be the bigger person if need be.
      Time to lesson the regrets that we may have in the future.

      It is about all of us who had to leave, back in the sad days when our economy was in bad shape.
      One of the best things about the last two decades is that emigration from Ireland is no longer compulsory.
      A child born today can expect to get their education to graduate level in Ireland, and can have their entire career in the country if they want. They DON'T have to leave...
      That is a paradigm shift in Irish culture.
      And I speak as someone who spent nearly half my life in other countries...

    My dad passed away in 2016. He was a good man and a better father and I miss him terribly. He was the one who introduced me to the beauty that is Irish Folk music.
    Now that I'm a father myself, and often have to spend long periods of time away from home for work (I'm writing this in a hotel room now) this song nearly brings me to tears any time I hear it.
    I even sing it for my son when I'm putting him to bed. Bless all the fathers out there who wish they could spend more time with their kids.
