Really useful information. I am a newbie to SFD from the UK and did wonder this exact issue but I knew you would have the answer and where to find it. Thank you.
Welcome Hazel Cook - newbie from the UK. I'm glad you found just what you were looking for. If you need assistance, our UK distributor Judith Johnson is very knowledgeable and always ready to help.
Thank you Glenda. I appreciate how thorough your videos are with reminders of sa and other details. I just completed my first top after the b.b. from the dress kit. I cannot find enough time to apply what I am learning through your SFD kits and videos to my sewing and it is really exciting.
Thank you for such a good video on evaluating the stretch in knits. I will apply this with a friend who is just learning how to sew and has chosen knits for her first sewing project.
Whew!! Lady, you just saved my behind!! Thanks so much for doing this. I needed to use a knit fabric for a regular pattern and then I thought, what did I just do?? Now I"m ready. Thanks so much!!!!

When sewing with a stretch fabric (specifically powermesh for dancewear), should you size down the number of inches that correlates to how many inches your material stretches? Example - the low stretch fabric only stretched one inch, so you adjust your pattern down one inch vs the high stretch fabric which stretched 6in and adjusting your pattern down 6in? What (if any) is the correlation of stretchiness to how much you take in your pattern? Thanks so much!
I would say most likely not. It's a percentage rather than a number. That material stretches 1 inch because Glenda has taken a 10 inch strip to do the test. It basically means it will stretch 1 inch every 10 inches (10%). So for example if your garment has a 32inch waist it'll stretch, not by 1 inch, but by approximately 3 inches at the waist. Most of the times it won't be as simple as taking the amount of stretch out from the pattern. Because stretch is dynamic not static - 10% is actually the "maximum" stretch the fabric has when an external force is applied. So if you simply take the amount of stretch out from a pattern, it may first of all eat into the ease of the pattern (at which point the garment will start hugging your body), then if you have taken more, part of the garment will start to stretch to accommodate. It may stretch as places you don't want it to stretch - for example at armholes, you don't really want a very tight armhole whilst stretches around bust/waist may be fine if it's designed to be snug. That's why in the video she talked about "one dot" distance and the distance is much shorter at the armhole than at waist/bust.
Hello my pattern is good for woven fabric like not stretchy but i want to luxe scuba knits fabric.. how to go down the size. It is like size 10 i will put down to size 8?
This is a very helpful video Glenda. And I thank you for doing it. I do have a question about the darts though, especially in the really stretchy fabrics like the slinky knits. Most commercial patterns don't put darts in patterns designed for knits and I have heard that in fabrics like slinky, the darts will sag lower than desired. Have you had any experience with this? I feel that for ladies with larger than a "B" cup that darts are desirable even in knits, but what I have done in the past is to leave the extra fabric area for the dart unstitched and instead ease it into the side seam. Again, what is your experience or additional thoughts?
You all prolly dont care but does anybody know of a trick to log back into an Instagram account? I was dumb lost my password. I love any assistance you can give me
@Ignacio Drake Thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site through google and I'm trying it out atm. Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
I'm looking to size down leotards, I have the measurements for the body but I don't know how to size them down as I'm using nylon lycra.. Also I don't know what you used for the dots.. Thankyou x
Hi Deborah - we have this topic of leotards/leggings covered in the Design & Sew Along found here - www.sewfitacademyonline.com/courses/leggings-design-sew-along
hi Glenda, that yellow fabric, is it suitable for bra making? I think it wouldn't be good for the larger breasted lady as it would make her bounce. Am I correct?
I just started sewing and needed this question answered. Thanks!
Thank you . I learned so much about stretch fabric
@adafloyd2705 - You are most welcome. I'm glad the video was of benefit to you.
I was so hoping to see you demo an it’s knit with four way stretch.
Sorry, I didn't realize I hadn't. It simply means a knit that stretches both vertically as well as horizontally.

Is there a tutorial for the shirt Glenda is wearing in this video? I like the bound neckline with the lapped shoulder. Thanks.

Hi Glenda I’m confused a little as I don’t like darts in T-shirt’s in stretch fabric what’s the trick to eliminating them 🧐😕😒
Here's an article on how to remove the bust dart - www.sfdlearningcenter.com/T-Shirt-Tactics.html
