Thanks for all these videos, been watching a lot of them over the last few days! Getting ready for my first triathlon in 2 months, and feel a lot better prepared just by watching already!
I hardly get a chance for open water swimming, and recently had a few chances. Found out ocean water is too salty and an unbearable burn in my nose arises after a very short time in the water. This weekend I had a chance to swim in lake Michigan, which went much better. Although, at the first beach the waves were entirely too intense for me and I ended up going to swim in the harbor nearby after I choked on some water pretty good a couple times. In the harbor I still noticed my breathing was more difficult than in the pool, it almost like the cold of the water was making it hard to breath. I only had time for about 600 yds, but I did start to warm up which helped a little. I've watched a lot of your videos, along with other swim videos, and I don't see much about these newbie issues I am experiencing. I'd love to know more about how to deal with these types of issues, and perhaps others may be interested as well.
Dude. Helmet. Hel. Met. I literally just had one of my triathlon training partners the other day get sideswiped by a car and ended up with a concussion WITH a helmet on. I'm telling you man, traumatic brain injury isn't cute, it's not a good look for anyone, and it can happen even if your ride to work is a mile and a half.
Thanks for covering this topic. Do you ever swim with one of those inflatable bright colored swim buoys that floats behind you and helps boaters see you?
I gotta ask. I watched a Triathlon in Ottawa on July 29th. About 26 degrees out that day, sunny. The top 20 finishers out of the water for the Sprint and Olympic distances all had full wet suits on...I thought you weren't allowed to wear them if the temp is over a certain amount? Maybe a good video on the importance scale of a wetsuit? I am intrigued if I need to buy one now for open water. Thanks.
Jason Rochon Air temperature and water temperature are usually different. Wetsuits aren’t allowed when WATER gets over 78F. With anything below, Wetsuits are allowed. When water gets below 58F, Wetsuits are mandatory.
Hi Taren, thank you so much for all of the content-it's great! My friend and I are planning to do our first spring triathlon in 5 months. We are both newbie swimmers and are taking swim lessons once per week. However, the rest of the week we don't have pool access - but we live near warm/calm beaches. Any suggestions for very beginner training plans exclusively done in open water?
Sorry, if question is stupid a little bit.. but where do you put your car keys during open water swimming? (if you go there by car alone).. I have that problem all the time and I don't want to take them with me in water..
Actually great question... I often hide them somewhere around my car, around the parking lot. You could put them on top of one of your tires, if you really wanted to, but obviously it could be seen somehow.
Sorry for asking but I really want to know.... why is your body composition like that even after performing on so many triathlons. Excuse my ignorance but I would assume that such races would give you a more muscular physique.
Jose Tobias He mentioned that he has some problems with his testosterone levels a couple vids ago and that screws your physique. But triathlon does not give you a "muscular" physique anyway. Actually, triathletes try to avoid to build too much muscle because it's unnecessary weight you have to lug around at the race. The target physique of a triathlete is "wiry", not really "muscular".
I'm sure you're safe and mindful, but do you think you should use one of those pull along inflatables just in case? Safety first! And you weren't wearing a helmet!!?? Commuting !?? Safety, seriously ! 😡
Helmet for sure, but sinking with a wetsuit? Almost impossible. I can´t float wihout one but with one I can just lay on my back and float all day long.
rwrtri365 here in Hawaii we swim in the ocean and I have never seen anyone use an inflatable anything. I don’t know if it’s a pride thing or not, but I have never used any such device either and I swim 4 times a week.
Brett Tri, it’s the smartest thing to do, but very few people are interested in swimming at 0530 when it’s still a bit dark. So some of us have to do it alone. Some of us don’t mind as swimming is part of our job requirement.

So incredibly helpful thank you!!!

I love your videos dude. Great style of editing and a great narrative.
Thanks Andy!

Are there going to be any races this year?
hi,
what is differences to swim in a sea / ocean / river / lake or pool ?
Thanks for covering this topic.

Nah, I never swim anywhere very busy

Do you swim up stream or down stream?

Excellent question, Gabriela! Any chance you'd mind going to triathlontaren.com/trainiask and ask that question there?
Happy to and done, thank you!
Thank you! Perfect! We'll send an email when your question is answered. (We're working about three weeks in advance right now.)
what was that song playing while he was swimming?
The differences between wetsuit legal and non wetsuit-legal open water swimming techniques?
Hey Taren How does 50 m to the beach sound as a cool backyard
Injury prevention whilst handling a sharp knife. Very safe.....

Awh, you were so close to a pun... Off you socks! (2:35)
So true

Jose Tobias he's got a highish bf% so he doesn't have much definition.
So this means he doesn't take much care about nutrition???
Taren used to be about 80lbs heavier, thats the reasons for his body composition.

NOTIFICATION SQUAD WERE U AT
U should never swim alone in open water.
Brett Tri But I am this depressed lonely guy no friends, no job I like to swim in open waters for some anti-depressant fix.

That pride can get u killed. It's a sport we are doing for fun. No sense in taking unnecessary risk.
