    Nice ride! I just bought a 2.5l e85 Z4

What's your honest opinion about the car, how long did you own it, what were the issues, were the coilovers necessary since the z4 is already rigid enough? maintenance costs, why are you selling it and what car did you replace it with?

I had the car for 3 years and I absolutely loved it. I drove it hard and it begged to be driven harder. I think it was a great balance of cost to value.
      - Typically a car with over 150K Kms, maintenance at that point gets expensive. All rubber gaskets become brittle and cause oil leaks. Intake leaks causing the car to go into limp mode etc. This is all part of the regular maintenance. Once I did all this, the engine and transmission was bulletproof. Love the sounds it makes. I think I may be put in $5K CAD to bring the car back to feeling brand new again.
      - The used car dealer I got this car from really played with me and did not disclose all the work that had to be done. I took a leap of faith and got the car because I loved trim and the options it had. I was ok with nurturing this car back to health. So if you are looking at getting it used, get a PPI done. Highly recommend doing this and don't let the dealer pressure you to skip it.
      - Then with the suspension. When I got the car, it had coilovers that were somewhat worn out. So I ended up getting new coil overs and this made a world of a difference. Car was so much more compliant and it was far more planted through the corners. I ended up refreshing the end-links with the suspension. All this was around $4k CAD, but this was more optional than anything else. Car would have run well for much longer keeping the Bilstein coilovers. But the coilovers change the game in the handling department. I highly recommend it.
      - Year maintenance was very little. Getting oil changes was easy. Changing the brake fluids was dead simple.
      - Working on the car in general was great I could do most of the regular maintenance like changing brake pads, rotors, callipers etc.
I sold this car because I wanted to get the Porsche 997 911. I truly miss my Z4. It was fun and stress free. With the 911 now, I have tons of fun, but I am stressed that I will damage it etc. As anything that happens with the 911 will cost and arm and a leg.
sorry it took a while to respond, I wanted to dedicate the right amount of time in responding to you.

@@thedevthing Thanks for responding, you mind telling me, what brand of coilovers did you replace the billsteins with?
You spent 4kCAD on gaskets to make the car solid again? but, what seals/gaskets cost that much? or maybe the workmanship cost that much?
      Tires, what brand name?

      @thedevthing  6 лет назад +1

@@kay19833 The $4k was for more than just the gaskets. It included all the labor cost too. For examples
      * We had to replace the intake gasket due to intake leak. This involved removing the intake manifold. I was not comfortable with this so I took it to the shop.
      * We then had a oil leak in the engine bay. It took a number of visits to the shop to determine the root cause. This was due to the seal between the engine block and the oil pan. Or something along those lines. Again a rubber gasket that went brittle.
      * Then we had a transmission fluid leak, this was root caused to the rubber seal by the drain plug.
      * Finally there was the control arm bushings that had to be replaced because it start to clunk around over bumps and during turns. I didn’t have the tools to do this, so I took it to the shop and it cost some $$
So you see there are rubber seals between some of the major components and at 160K kms, these rubber seals or gaskets can get stiff and crack. Weather conditions probably plays a factor in how long they last. Where I live, we get tons of snow over the winter and they use salt to melt away snow and ice. The salt probably reduced the life of the rubber seals. If the car was from a place where it was sunny and dry most of the year, these things would be just fine I would think.

@@thedevthing All the gaskets you mentioned cost a little to nothing. It was the workmanship that spiked the price. One advice, don't buy a bmw used if you don't have basic mechanic skills. Buying it cheap and putting another 4k canadian dollars into it doesn't really make sense.
There are tons of RUclips videos about changing intake, oil pan or transmission gaskets on any popular bmw engine out there. Get a toolbox, with rachet wrenches, sockets, impact wrenches etc, make sure you have your own garage or at least a warm driveway to work in, tools don't cost much and you get to keep them for a long time. You won't regret it.

If you are not “too heavy” you should fit just fine. I’m 6’2 and with the top down I feel a little tight but is not a deal breaker for me. It is an engaging experience driving a E85/86 Z4, and a true classic BMW Roadster.

Very late comment, but im 6'5 and i for perfectly. It all depends on you have longer legs or longer torso. If you have long legs you'll fit just fine, but if your torso is longer you may hit the roof.
