Awesome video! I'm 19 and saving up for this to be my first car. Ever since my dad bought his first good car which was a BMW in 2011, I pledged that my first car would be one as well! BMW's were the coolest things ever to my 6 year old self, still are over a decade later...
I have an early '03 2.5i, they're great cars with loads of character and brilliant engines. The electric power steering in mine gave a lot of trouble so I swapped it out for a hydraulic system from an M3, fitted some high spec bucket seats and that improved it immensely. Enjoyed the video a lot
Many rhanks for your good honest review. I have a Z4 2005 mod 3,0i, manual, and I love it. Same issues as you've pointed out, but in general, this is more or less a bulletproof kit. It's not my daily driver but done approz 100' miles. Had it since 2017 and probably the least exspensive car ownership I've ever had.
Thanks for the comment! I try looking for for another but hard to find ,I really it, at the moment I have 370z roadster..6 speed ..looks great-nice interior..but just doesn't have the same driving experience ! Im always looking for these cars, hard to find though!
I own a 2003 Z4 3.0, 6pd with sport and premium package, space gray metallic like yours. Just turned 90,000 miles. Bought it from my friend in 2010. She bought it new, one f the first few hundred that came off the assembly line. I still love taking it out on a nice day. I’ve had to have the top rebuilt twice, for different reasons. By far the biggest expense. Believe it or not, no issues yet with oil or coolant leaks. Had the clutch replaced. It’s got a bad strut mount now, planning on having the struts and mounts replaced soon. Also, the check engine light is on. A scan indicates an issue with the thermostat. My independent, expert BMW mechanic tells me the thermostat almost always gets stuck open, so not a crisis here in a warm climate. The maintenance issues have been a small price overall for all the enjoyment it gives me. Good luck with yours.
Just replaced the top motor in my 03 3.0i 6spd. It was only $100 for the part. Absolutely, worst thing I’ve ever done on a car but I didn’t remove the top. I relocated it to the trunk so hopefully I’ll never have to do it again.
I came to say this about the convertible top. You *do not* have to remove the convertible top to replace the electric motor that drives the hydraulics for the top. If you are willing to work in small spaces & climb into the trunk that is… Plenty of vids on how to do this, it’s a PITA but possible. Do check the valve on the side of the pump part that allows you to manually raise & lower the top in the case of a failure - mine was frozen. A little WD~40 and some ‘persuasion’ and it’s all good now 👍 BMW Stealership wanted at least $2K to fix it, the car was worth maybe $10K (to me). So I did it myself for < $100. Buy the electric motor and the correct OEM BMW hydraulic fluid for topping up. Don’t be fooled - it’s just Febi Hydraulic Fluid, ZHM, 1 LITER. Maybe $12.50 at NAPA auto parts. Used in mercedes suspension and BMW convertible tops.
Wrenching on this thing is so easy, I’ve had my ‘03 3.0i 6 speed since 2019 with 87k miles. 50s kid has an amazing library of videos working on the m54 motor on his e46 here on youtube. FCP Euro has become my friend for parts being they are near me in MA down in CT
I owned this exact Z4, but with the red leather interior. Bought it CPO in CA (2005, 13k) in 2007 from a local BMW dealer. It was my daily driver for nearly 9 yrs, and yes, I found it to be practical. I'm single and the car had ample space in the interior (5'11, 178lbs) and the trunk for the size of the car was bigger than most would think. I did plenty of Costco, and airport (baggage) runs in it. The car is built like a tank & the engine (M54) as mentioned is in fact bullet proof. I kept up with required scheduled maintenance to include oil changes every 5k miles. The only thing that I had to replace was the valve cover gasket at 34k, and the dealership took care of it under warranty. I got compliments wherever I drove. The Z4 Roadster to me is just a 'looker'. Some may not think so. After 9 yrs & 40k miles later of ownership, I decided to upgrade to a 135i. The BMW dealership bought it from me and gave me top dollar at the time in 2015. I have missed owning & driving the Z4. I am now actively looking for one, and this time around, I will keep it for the long run. If you are an enthusiast and looking for a Z4, look no further than the E85 with the M54 engine. You will not regret it.

The I still drive my 2005 Z4, 39,000 miles . Even the brakes are original. It is a 6 speed manual drive. I am having the main drive belt replaced proactively due it age, why wait until it fails. The same BMW dealer has serviced this car for the last 19 years. It looks and drives like new. Yes it does not go out in bad weather.
My top is a manual hand lock. TBH I had a choice of an electric version of the car but chose this because roof motors are always a problem. There’s no need for it apart from vanity. And realistically it’s way faster and easier to pull the top up with one hand since BMW designed it well.
I don’t race it or push it to limits. It’s more for the convertible fun aspect that I use it (weekends and escapes). I’ll be honest I do baby it!! Always garaged, Top treated with UV protectant every year, buff and wax, etc.
